Hillary: time to 'separate rhetoric from reality'

Posted: Sunday, January 06, 2008 4:55 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum and Mark Murray
NASHUA, NH -- American voters must begin to separate rhetoric from reality as they choose the next president, Clinton told a jam-packed high school gymnasium here just two days before the primary. It was a clear reference to rivals Obama and Edwards.

Clinton said Democrats could bring about change in 2008 by "making sure we nominate and elect a doer not a talker, that we begin to separate out rhetoric from reality." In Saturday night’s debate, Clinton praised Obama for his skills as a speaker, but criticized his record -- as well as Edwards' -- drawing distinctions that her campaign staffers said she would continue to stress in these final days. She did so today with a long riff (never mentioning her rivals by name) that at times sparked laughter, cheers and applause from the audience.

"If you give a speech saying you’re going to vote against the Patriot Act and you don’t, that’s not change," she said in a dig at Obama. "If you make a speech and a very good speech against the war in Iraq in 2002 and then by 2004 you're saying you're not sure how you would have voted and by 2005-6 and 7, you vote for $300 billion for the war you said you were against, that’s not change."

"If you say that you passed a Patients' Bill of Rights, but you forget to add that it was never signed into law, that's not change," she said in a reference to Edwards.

The Obama campaign points out, however, that Obama voted to strengthen the Patriot Act by supporting three changes to prevent law enforcement abuse. Also, it notes that Clinton voted for the very same Patriot Act reauthorization. And Clinton's argument that Obama was "not sure how" he would have voted on the Iraq war in 2004 omits Obama's full quote on the subject.

Here is the full quote, per a July 26, 2004 New York Times article: "In a recent interview, [Obama] declined to criticize Senators Kerry and Edwards for voting to authorize the war, although he said he would not have done the same based on the information he had at the time. 'But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,' Mr. Obama said. 'What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.' But Mr. Obama said he did fault Democratic leaders for failing to ask enough tough questions of the Bush administration to force it to prove its case for war. 'What I don't think was appropriate was the degree to which Congress gave the president a pass on this,' he said."

In her speech, Clinton went on to list examples of how she argued she had "made change," including her work on children’s health care, adoption and health care for national guard and reserve members -- before repeating her argument that America should elect a president who is ready to begin fixing the problems the country faces.

Yet Clinton also said something here on Iraq, which triggered an immediate response from the Obama campaign. On a question about how she would have handled things differently than President Bush, Clinton said, "After 9/11, I would never have taken us to war in Iraq. I would have stayed focused on Afghanistan, because the real threat was coming from there. That doesn't mean that Saddam Hussein was a good guy. It doesn't mean he wasn't dangerous. He was. I agreed with that. That's why I wanted to send inspectors back in and try to figure out what he was actually doing."

She went on, "But I don't think a preemptive war at that time was the best strategy. I think if we had stayed focused on Afghanistan, kept our resources there, when we really had a chance to get bin Laden, and all of his allies, I think we might have done it. And now we are playing catch up, and it's a dangerous game of catch up."

Replied Obama spokesman Bill Burton, “Hillary Clinton may try to rewrite history, but it's hard to believe she didn't know what would happen after she voted for a resolution with the title ‘A Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq.’ While Hillary Clinton continues to make the same kind of attacks that voters are rejecting, Barack Obama will continue telling voters about his consistent opposition to the war in Iraq from the start, and his plan to bring our troops home.”

Is Hillary auditioning for the lead role in "Sybil"? Just how many personalities are we going to get to see in such a short span of time? Memo to Hillary: Being the change candidate does not mean changing your personality on an hourly basis.
Hillary is the past and Obama is the future.
Experience is not a good thing if it's same old politics and negativity.  Playing to the fears of the American people is insulting.
Obama's "words" do inspire and we are a country built by dreamers who dared to inspire and believe.
This is a new day in American and it is words like MLK's that continue to echo in our hearts and inspire us to believe in Obama.

Hillary Clinton is not only the democrats' worst chance -- by a country mile -- of taking back the White House, but she's also the American people's worst chance of getting any kind of straight take out of their next President.  Her painfully transparent efforts to paint Obama as indecisive and disingenuous expose her for the rigged-system-defending, lobbyist-owned-and-approved clown that she truly is.
Her baseless and desperate attacks continue to escalate. I'm a hardcore Democrat, but she's on the verge of losing my vote permanently (even if she somehow wins the nomination). I am reminded exactly why so many dislike her: she's willing to do anything, even lie about a good and decent public servant like Obama, in her entitlement-fueled quest for power.
Obama is a total fake His sixth and seventh important acts as a senator were to vote for a bill that made it nearly impossible for ordinary people to sue giant corporations who rob & defraud. He voted for President Bush's energy bill, sending more than $13 billion in subsidies and tax breaks to oil, coal, and nuclear companies. He voted to allow credit card companies to raise interest rates over 30 percent. He spoke out against the Patriot Act, only to vote in favor of reauthorizing it, he cannot commit to have all troops out of Iraq by 2013, supported Bush's sanctions against Iran and co-sponsored a bill designating the Iranian National Guard a terrorists organization, he implied he'd invade Pakistan, he favors amnesty for illegal immigrants, he is for entitlement programs that will increase the deficit leaving the burden on taxpayers and accepts contributions from influential lobbyists, corporations & special interest groups, while claiming he's the "anti-establishment" candidate."

ms clinton forgets to mention that she has accepted money from all sources, corporate, pharmaceutical, etc. while faulting others for doing the same.  that is her fundamental problem- she is disingenous and deceitful, and her arrogance is offensive.  she is not an agent of change, and her experience is minimal; the only advantage she has is age. living in the white house doesnt give you experience, and her campaign is smoke and mirrors. she is so polarizing,   what makes her think anyone would be able to work with her given her vindictiveness and appetite for infighting?  this is her "you owe me tour" and bill is using her for his own "lets do it again" tour.  this is about satiating their monumental ambition and lust for power, not leading the american people.  the only thing she knows about change is how to put more in her pocket.  obama beats her on everything that counts- bipartisanship, charisma, leadership and vision.  its time for the democrats to stop being afraid of the clintons and accept that the only way they have a chance is to embrace the politics of enlightenment that obama represents.  i am one democrat absolutely sick of the clintons and their self absorbed smugness and intellectual superiority.  we need to clean house and give ourselves a new, fresh start.  the thought of ms clinton leading change given her track record, history and past behavior is patently absurd and delusional.  more clinton means more of the same. Obama is our best chance to unify a badly fractured and rudderless america.
"Last night Clinton revealed her passion, depth of knowledge and her humor. She revealed who she is. She also sent a warning that she will not be insulted or dismissed. That indignation at having her experience and record laughed at by two men who can't get the job done alone so they hold hands to get it done together."

There is no need to adress Edwards here because in realty, he never gets it. And that is the reason put him back. I was for him all along, very sad to see him "fight" for OB's life, not himself. I guess his next goal is not president, it is a wishful VP,  position. Read my lips, OB will never pick him, use him only, sir.

JUST A NOTE SO CALLED FAVORITE SON TED KENNEDY LOST THE NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY IN 1980 TO THEN PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER
I'll throw her a DOG BONE and tie her up out side!!!

There we now can continue our conversation, which is real issue.

The enough of enough has the American people pissed off. Their voice and concern over a failed congress is the real priority issue. No clever moves or side stepping will mask over reality.

Congress is maintained by self serving paper hangers, our intent is not to send that contender to Washington.

HRC, has completed the task of failing the people, as a Senator, or a want to be President ""which will never happen"" HRC, is the most unqualified to support that post. Talking always in past tense, will evade and only reflect conjecture to having any answer. HRC, can babble, yuck it up, snort, belch, fart, but the people are not impressed.

To change is to know what must be changed, living in the past has no meaning to know how to solve present issues. Clinging on to coat tails is not a leadership trait, defending scandal is meaningless, having loose leaf is pretense is a fools failure.

Yes , reality for some is never waking up to reality!
I understand First Read is sort of like blogging but NBC news can do a better job than this.

Senator Obama was asked about this July 2004 statement about Iraq war ("What would I have done?  I don’t know") By Tim Russet during his Nov 11 appearance. Sen Obama responded to that question in this way:

Sen Obama: "[that] quote was made with an interview with a guy named Tim Russert on MEET THE PRESS during the convention when we had a nominee for the presidency and a vice president, both of whom had voted for the war.  And so it, it probably was the wrong time for me to be making a strong case against our party’s nominees’ decisions when it came to Iraq."

Come on, First Read writers. You can at least check the most basic of things -- like your own website. The people of NH are trying to make a critical decision here. Help us out, please.

Andy, Baltimore, MD (Sent Sunday, January 06, 2008 5:17 PM)

Andy, you already proved that you are not knowledgeable and uninformed by saying Hillary and Obama are both in their 1st term of Senate. What more do you want to prove by spewing uninformed hatred about Hillary due to your blind sightedness?
please people do not vote for a candidate because the media and the television told you so. first of all, if you believe in Oprah then you should get out of your couch and stop watching so much television. what happened to this country?? you vote for a president just because Oprah told you to do so?? and Oprah should side with the women not with the men. I guess she does this out of jealousy so there is no woman more powerful than her on this planet. if she would have some senses into her, she would know how hard it is for a woman to suceed in this country. maybe she forgot how much she had to endure from men to get to where she is now. I see this on daily basis in the corporate world, women get stepped all over and pushed around by the sneaky men who steal their ideas and promote them as theirs. Isn’t this what Obama did? Obama has no experience and he stole Hillary’s ideas and speeches and make them his own, ten he attacked Hillary on public television and made her feel unworthy, just so he can get to the top. isn’t this typical men behaviour in your daily job?? women wake up and stand up for women. I hate to see women siding with men, when they themselves were hurt in the long run by men. what a shame that us women cannot unite together and be more powerful to stand up for oursleves.
Hillary is an excelent candidate, full of experience and wisdom. I hear he speeches and I tell myself that this is one smart woman who knows what she is talking about. Obama has no clue what he is talking about. I hope the democratic party does not make a huge mistake and elect a candidate who has no experience and elects him just because Oprah told you to do so. Who is Oprah anyways??? a talk show host?? please, if she would me smart she would support Hillary and think about the hard times she had before she got to where she is. and people stop watching too much television and think about where this country is going and what would happen if a candidate with no experience comes into power.
Amen Hillary.

Now, why don't you tell us what you've actually done instead of continuing to pitch your empty "experience"?

If it's good advice for others, you might want to take it yourself.
Since when talking about policy issues and voting records considered an attack? I thought when Obama talked about policy differences, it wasnt an attack.

So now why the hypocrisy from Obama supporters? America is doomed if double standards and hypocrisy takes over.

Actions speak louder than words. Obama's actions in Senate dont match his words. So yes, Obama is right, he will be swiftboated by Republicans easily.
To change is to know what must be changed, living in the past has no meaning to know how to solve present issues. Clinging on to coat tails is not a leadership trait, defending scandal is meaningless, having loose leaf is pretense is a fools failure.

Yes , reality for some is never waking up to reality!
THROW OUT THE DOG AND TAKE OUT THE TRASH (Sent Sunday, January 06, 2008 5:25 PM)

Your first sentence in itself kills your argument.

To change is to know what must be changed and how it can be changed based on actions done so far! Just saying change the past is not change. Remember someone once said "Old is Gold". Sometimes it is. "KNowledge of how to change is a virtue".

Day dreamers will ruin America. Hope our youth dont fall for fluffy change. Hope they ask for action.
I support Obama but I think credit needs to be given where it's due....Hillary has done some good things, made some mistakes...just like you and I.
If you don't believe in nagative campaigning be consistent by not bashing Hillary sitting on your brains....be fair and logical.....read and learn then judge!!>>>
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/about/
The moments is for change , thanks to Bush....who many of us thought he was the one we could comfortably have a beer with then....I wish the best for Obama....and I hope , God Forbid, if he let's us down we should just shut up and take responsibility.....not like many republicans turned against Bush....who they preferred over many experienced leaders at the time.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH EXPERIENCE....if we trump experience for the presidency, I wonder why MSNBC should not hire me to fill the role of some of these reporters....I can surely do better than some of these Scott Peterson look alikes!
Desperate and childish tactics by a desperate and poorly managed campaign. Hillary's experience does not seem to be helping her in running a smooth campaign now does it?
Hillary is missing the big picture here. Americans want real change, real inspiration, real challenges, real integrity and real leadership. That is why she is losing, they are rejecting real entitlement
Right now, there is this tidal wave of support for change. I understand it because I want change. I want change from the current adminstration.

That said, change is not some abstract concept that can be accomplished through rhetoric. Change occurs through action. What has Obama done that suggests that he is capable of leading this country to change? Not much in the few years before he started to run for president.

There are two things that really bother me about Obama's crediblity: first, he abstained from voting on making the Iranian Guard a terrorist group. This was an important vote about national security, and regardless of his position, he should have let us know where he stands by voting.

Second, in my opinion, his credibility is tarnished by the fact that he promised not to vote for the Patriot's Act, and yet he did.

If he makes promises that he does not keep, how can I know that he will keep this word on issues such as health care or Iraq? If he refuses to vote on the tough issues, how will I know that he will not do the same on issues such as North Korea?
Barack Obama talks of change but what change? He talks against interest groups but he has raised $100 million dollar and a good portion of it from interest groups. He is indeed a candidate of change, for changing what he says. He talked about bombarding Islamic positions in Pakistan only to backtrack a few days later. As a constitutional law teacher, he may have remembered that Pakistan is a sovereign country. The world is too dangerous to have another unexperienced President in the White House. He definitely lacks any experience on foreign policy to bring up his 4 years of childhood in Indonesia as an experience. American people do not need a talk show man, they do need an experienced and decisive person in the White House.

For many months, we've been teased, even derided for talking about hope.

But we always knew that hope is not blind optimism.  It's not ignoring the enormity of the task ahead or the roadblocks that stand in our path.  It's not sitting on the sidelines or shirking from a fight.  Hope is that thing inside us that insists, despite all evidence to the contrary, that something better awaits us if we have the courage to reach for it, and to work for it, and to fight for it.

Hope is what I saw in the eyes of the young woman in Cedar Rapids who works the night shift after a full day of college and still can't afford health care for a sister who's ill; a young woman who still believes that this country will give her the chance to live out her dreams.

Hope is what I heard in the voice of the New Hampshire woman who told me that she hasn't been able to breathe since her nephew left for Iraq; who still goes to bed each night praying for his safe return.

Hope is what led a band of colonists to rise up against an empire; what led the greatest of generations to free a continent and heal a nation; what led young women and young men to sit at lunch counters and brave fire hoses and march through Selma and Montgomery for freedom's cause.

Hope—hope—is what led me here today – with a father from Kenya; a mother from Kansas; and a story that could only happen in the United States of America.  Hope is the bedrock of this nation; the belief that our destiny will not be written for us, but by us; by all those men and women who are not content to settle for the world as it is; who have the courage to remake the world as it should be.

That is what we started here in Iowa, and that is the message we can now carry to New Hampshire and beyond; the same message we had when we were up and when we were down; the one that can change this country brick by brick, block by block, calloused hand by calloused hand – that together, ordinary people can do extraordinary things; because we are not a collection of Red States and Blue States, we are the United States of America; and at this moment, in this election, we are ready to believe again. Thank you, Iowa
you may not like her but shes smart i believe shes ready to  get us out of trouble america need some help after 8 years of foolish im black i beg blacks dont vote for some one because hes blackthey voted for bush because they like to drink a beer with him how about because they can do the job. dont let thenews people pick for america again

Sen. Clinton and her campaign have now become totally ridiculous. I trust that new Hampshire solidly confirms Iowa's historic action.  Just as the incessant experience mantra (ignoring its uselessness having informed poor judgement at crucial junctures), her whole campaign has become just plain tiresome and laced with prevarication.
John McCain securred my vote last night because of his personal explanation of why he wants to be the president. It was honest, simple, and best of all, from his heart. Romney acted like a spoiled rich kid who always gets his way...until last night. Ron Paul may be seriously mental.
On the dem side, Obamma did very well and seems to have taken control of his own destiny. Hillary can't speak on her own without a script from Bill's past. I never heard a direct answer or original explanaton for anything. Richardson doesn't have a clue and can't look anyone in the eyes.
The Obama campaign is now playing not to lose and is on the defense. They have joined up with John edwards to attack Hillary Clinton at all costs. That is a desperate act, IMO. John Edwards was rejected in 2004, and his message of "fighting for change" still has not brought any real change for America. It is very interesting that Obama continues to refuse to answer questions at his campaign stops. He just talks. Again, Obama's campaign is playing not to lose. Hillary Clinton's campaign is playing to win.

Part of comment about Iraq.

''But, I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,'' Mr. Obama said. ''What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.''
sbn, be careful about spreading mistruths, special interests cannot donate to presidential campaigns, thanks to campaign reform. Each contributor can only donate $2300, which all campaigns are held to. Hillary's campaign encourages a practice called bundling, which while not explicitly illegal, is somewhat questionable ethicly. Baraks campaign dollars are from donors such as myself, some amounts as small as $5, but none over $2300 - that is the law.
THE REALITY IS SHE WOULDNT HAVE TO BRING THE TROOPS HOME, GENERAL PETRAEUS ALREADY HINTED HE WOULD RETIRE RATHER THAN SERVE UNDER HER AS WOULD OTHERS. THE SOLDIERS HATE ALL DEMOCRATS, AND WOUDNT SERVE, MEANING NO RE ENLISTMENTS, 20 YEAR RETIREMENTS ALL TIME HIGH, IF YOU WERE A SOLDIER WOULD YOU SERVE UNDER ANY DEMOCRAT, NO BECAUSE NO DEMOCRATS SERVE OUR COUNTRY, THEY RE TOO YELLOW
People who say he needs more seasoning in Washington just want to "boil all the hope out of him" so he sounds just like everybody else, Obama said.
--
Hillary..c’mon. Before Obama entered into the race, I was actually considering voting for Hillary, not because I supported her stances(her Iraq War vote and refusal to apologize for it really bugged me), but I felt it might be worth it to see Hannity’s head explode when she became president.
However, once Obama entered the race, I began listening to him more closely, and did quite a lot of reading on his website to understand his positions and policy ideas. I found them refreshing and intelligent, as well as pragmatic.
Before the CNN/Youtube debate a few months ago, I was undecided and went into the debate with an open mind, however after the debate, I started leaning towards Obama.
Then Hillary came out the next day and attacked Obama as “naive and irresponsible” for saying he would be willing to engage with leaders of rogue nations directly. After hearing Hillary’s criticism, I did some research and found her interview with Keith Olbermann from 2006 where she said “as president, one of my first acts would be to talk to Iran directly.”
Ok, then I found the clip of Hillary telling Al Hunt of Bloomberg News in 2006 that “nukes were off the table” regarding Iran, yet she had just criticized Obama for saying the same thing regarding Al qaeda targets inside Pakistan.
Ok, so then Hillary attacks Obama for saying as president, he would act IF Pakistani president Musharraf refused to act on solid intel on Bin Laden and other high-value Al qaeda targets. Hillary says Obama’s words “will destabilize a nuclear power…words matter and presidents should not always say what they think.” I then did some research and found out that Hillary told the Urban Radio Network’s April Ryan on August 2nd 2007 that “if we have actionable intelligence on high-value Al qaeda targets inside Pakistan, I would make sure they were killed or captured.”
Ok….so at this point, my decision to support Obama is solidified, and I start to wonder why those who support Hillary refuse to address her inconsistent positions. (posted by Gilberto)
Some amazingly transparent Clinton plants on here, pretending to represent certain races, misrepresenting Obama's record, defaming Obama's past and race. Nice try, your campaign is surely as desperate as your personality changing candidate
I see Hillary Clinton is still having a Brittany Spears Moment.....She gonna lock her self up in the bathroom if you tried to take her Presidency away
Lou, all the candidates spent a year going from house to house, church to church, school to school, being grilled by Iowans.  I am black to and would be angry if was judged by the color of my skin.  But to say that his winning because his black is wrong.  Sharpton doesn't like him because he is not "black enough."  Get informed about the biographies and issues of each candidate!
I just can't believe that the Clinton camp still don't get it! too polarizing, too caustic, unscrupulously ambitious -- not likable. Well, lets show them what we mean again on tuesday. Fired up...Ready to go. Obama 08.
HEY OBAMA may not be a bag of potato chips and more, but he is a MUCH MUCH better choice for loser Democrats than HILLARY, I BOUGHT MY SENATORSHIP, CLINTON.
What can a mix (white/black) non-Christain man who is so green in politics that it almost hurts to hear him speak? What does he bring to America?
Please-THINK before you respond. How many black people do you really know? Be honest...
I do hope for the best, but leave it to us Dems to shoot ourselves in the foot when we would have a better chance with Clinton.
Barack Obama said lobbyist does not FUND his campaign and WILL NOT WORK in his WHITE HOUSE(2 year gap).
Lobbyist OR POPULAR FORMER GOVERNORS working on a campaign to attract voters is as American(democracy) as apple pie. Read the constitution-right to petition(they cannot be sent to a leper colony people. I get the difference(anyone that does not is naive or trying to make cheap POLITICAL points). By the way, the candidates all have them working on a campaign.
Clinton can and might get elected but we need someone who can help get other Democrats elected as well. More people will come out to vote against her and that will prevent a working majority in congress so we can really have change. Hilary is the best fighter in the trenches but if Obama is elected he will bring enough others into the process that the Dems won't need to fight tooth and nail for basically nothing.  That will be true change and meaningful change.
Oprah has nothing to do with this - she is just another citizen and her opinion is not what should convince anyone.

I support Obama because of my own discerning or his judgment, vision, graciousness, and leadership, which is not shrill desperation (like Hillary's).

Whatever experience Hillary is purporting is not about home much experience, but about what she has actually done -- where are the results she keeps talking about?

She is the kind politician we need to leave behind, people.
Um...Manuela, you're the first person to mention Oprah.    Just because she endorsed Obama?  Can you point me to your similar posts on Chuck Norris or Barbara Streisand?  And your armchair psychology is just about on par with the hacktastic Dr. Phil.  I'm thinking it's time you turn off your TV.

And thanks to First Read for finally putting up some facts even if it's not all the facts.
HILLARY IS ANSWERING ALL KINDS OF QUESTIONS! GO TO ONE OF HER RALLIES AND MAYBE SHE'LL CALL ON YOU AND SHE WILL ANSWER THE EXPERIENCE QUESTION.
SEE, OLDER VOTERS KNOW SHE HAS EXPERIENCE. THE YOUNG VOTERS DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT POLITICS. ALL THEY'VE EVER HEARD IS THE BAD THINGS ABOUT HER...FROM THE REPUBLICANS...SOME OF THE SAME YOUNG VOTERS WHO BENEFITED FROM SCHIP!!
Barack is a Christian - plz stop with the blatant lies, obviously a Clinton plant. My nephew is biracial, straight A student, superb athelete and has a great future. I would hope for him and my caucausian son and all of Americas black, white, red, yellow, etc children that we can look to a leader like Barack, who has integrity, character, and a vision of a united country, and let him inspire us to be a better country and a better ppl where the color of someones skin color and their ancestors religion are not preclusions from leading our country
has anyone seen the new UNH/CNN numbers?  Obama up 10 points on Clinton.  Yesterday they were tied

The only "Reality" here is that Clinton is going to get spanked on Tues in NH
Keep insulting young voters.  Keep telling us that we are uninformed and stupid.  Keep telling us we won't show up and vote.  We can relate to Obama.  We connect with him.

And for those who keep saying Obama is not a Christian, shame on you.  And for those who talk about his race, shame on you.  This is the 21st century folks, its not the 60s anymore.
"Andy, you already proved that you are not knowledgeable and uninformed by saying Hillary and Obama are both in their 1st term of Senate. What more do you want to prove by spewing uninformed hatred about Hillary due to your blind sightedness?"

If one error in the midst of endless discourse constitutes "uninformed hatred" and "blind sightedness" to you, I feel genuinely sorry for you, sir.  Your remarks are straight out of the Mark Penn playbook.  Would you like to comment on my cocaine use?
Allen Yeager, thanks for confirming what I was thought. I always knew that there racists in the Dem Party too. All that talk about loving blacks and minorities to portray the Rep party as racist and devisive. Keep going tell us more.
Hillary here i some reality for you ...

Obama up by 13 points, McCain up by 4 in USAT/Gallup Poll in N.H.

Sen. Barack Obama has opened up a 13 percentage point lead over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in the battle for votes in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, according to a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll conducted in the state from Friday through this afternoon. The results were just released.

On the Republican side, Sen. John McCain is 4 percentage points ahead of Mitt Romney.

The surveys of 776 New Hampshire residents who are "likely" to vote in the Republican primary and 778 New Hampshire residents who are "likely" to vote in the Democratic primary were all completed after the news from Thursday's Iowa caucuses had been reported.

The rundowns:

Democrats.

• Obama: 41%; up from 32% in the last USA TODAY/Gallup New Hampshire poll, taken in mid-December.
• Clinton: 28%; down from 32%.
• John Edwards: 19%; up from 18%.
• Gov. Bill Richardson: 6%; down from 8%.
• No one else above 3%.

Republicans.

• McCain: 34%; up from 27% in mid-December.
• Romney: 30%; down from 34%.
• Mike Huckabee: 13%; up from 9%.
• Rep. Ron Paul: 8%; down from 9%.
• Rudy Giuliani: 8%; down from 11%.
• No one else above 3%.

Each figure has a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points. So Obama's lead is "outside" that range, while McCain's is not.
There is only one democrat who can deliver on change, it is Hillary Clinton.  It's time to look beyond the poetry of Senator Obama's words and the hope he gives us all, to the person who has a COMMAND of the issues, the processes and a life-long record of battling on behalf of average Americans.  Hillary's Administration will take us beyond just hope and deliver on change.
