The battle for New Hampshire

So where’s the bounce? Well… The USA Today/Gallup poll has Obama leading Clinton, 41%-28%, with Edwards at 19%. In the GOP race, it’s McCain 34%, Romney 30%, and Huckabee 13%. More from the poll: “McCain narrowly trails Romney among Republicans but leads him among independents by almost 2-1. They can vote in either primary. In a USA TODAY poll in December, Romney had led McCain by seven points overall. Obama leads by eight points among Democrats and 23 points among independents. Women split between them evenly; he owes his lead to his edge among men, 49%-20%. Obama also leads narrowly among seniors and by an overwhelming 3-1 among voters under 35.”

The newest CNN/WMUR poll, meanwhile, has Obama leading Clinton by 10 points, 39%-29%, with Edwards at 16%. The day before, Obama and Clinton were tied at 33% each. In the GOP race, it’s McCain 32%, Romney 26%, Huckabee 14%, Giuliani 11%, and Paul 10%.

The Wall Street Journal: “After candidates who portrayed themselves as agents of change won the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney -- the Democratic and Republican stalwarts defeated there -- embraced the lesson, swiftly and drastically changing their campaigning styles… After rarely taking questions in the final days of her Iowa campaign, Mrs. Clinton opened the floor to two hours of queries in place of her prepared stump speech over the weekend. And she ramped up her attacks on Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic victor in Iowa, even as she tried to soften her image to address concerns about her likeability. Mr. Romney … was suddenly flanked by a massive ‘to do’ list of campaign promises and an illuminated sign declaring, ‘Washington is Broken’ -- an attempt to tar his leading opponent here, Arizona Sen. John McCain, the candidate with the most Washington experience in the Republican field.”

In a telephone conference call last night, NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports, the Clinton campaign accused the Obama camp of violating New Hampshire law by having automated calls to people who've signed up for the do-not-call list -- to rebut a Clinton attack on Obama's record on abortion rights.

NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan adds that the call in question, recorded by Wendy Frosh of Planned Parenthood of New England, defends Obama against a mailer sent by the Clinton campaign that says he voted “present” seven times on legislation related to women’s reproductive rights. “Barack has a 100% pro-choice record and has always been a champion for women’s rights. Hillary Clinton’s last minute smears won’t protect the right to choose,” the ad says. It asks voters to support Obama and Tuesday, and it ends by identifying itself as paid for by the Obama campaign.

Clinton’s campaign says that two to three of their supporters in New Hampshire who are on the federal Do Not Call List received a robocall from Obama’s campaign. Normally, federal law makes exceptions for political phone calls and non-profit groups, but according to the Clinton campaign New Hampshire law prevents robocalls going to voters on the list. The campaign also says that the message left on voters’ machines violates the 30-second time limit in which the sponsor of the call must be identified.  The call identifies the sponsor at 38 seconds, per the Clinton campaign.

The Obama campaign, responding through a statement from New Hampshire co-chair Ned Helms, says that their vendors “scrubbed” the list to confirm that no voters were on the Do Not Call List. “However if this call went to someone who should not have received it, we will make sure the vendor takes every step to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Helms’ statement read.

It is unclear if the people the Clinton campaign said were called were actually on the Do Not Call List. It has publicly identified just one woman who has received the calls. For its part, the Obama campaign has not denied that the woman in question was not on the Do Not Call List. They have also said their disclaimer, which identifies the sponsor of the ad, complies with federal law.

In the latest update on this controversy, Anburajan notes, Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton sent an email saying that the Clinton campaign had forgotten a special exception under the state law that may permit campaigns to contact voters on the "Do Not Call List." Here's the provision: "The provisions of this chapter shall apply to all state primary, general, and special elections, but shall not apply to presidential preference primaries."

At least Hillary has a solid lead in the national polls, right?
Someone on a Do Not Call List got a call from the Obama campaign. Is this supposed to change people's vote? Or does it make Senator Clinton's campaign look petty?

Here is a thought - instead of focusing on Senator Obama's faults, Senator Clinton should focus on her strengths. One tip: Quit saying you have 35 years of making change if you only have 2 examples.
Clinton is really grasping at straws! It is ridiculous! What is she expecting voters to say, "OH GEESH I WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM BECAUSE HIS CAMPAIGNED ACCIDENTLY CALLED A COUPLE OF PEOPLE ON THE DO NOT CALL LIST"

Be realistic!!!

After her witchy moment Saturday night, I wonder why she truly is running for office.  Really, why?
To June:

To answer your question, not for long. When Hillary loses New Hampshire, her second consecutive drubbing, her national numbers will head south fast. As Victor Hugo wrote, 'There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.'
Note to the Clinton campaign - - - QUIT WHINING!!
Hillary and her staffers are going to need stiff drink before this is all over. The fact that she supported the war and has offered no apology has hurt her. The reason Obama is so appealing is that he is smart, intellegent and NEW. His candor and speeches make him ideal in the eyes of many people, mainly the younger generation and Independants. The Republicans seem like the same old same old. I think it rather funny how the Replulican now added change to their campaign slogans.
The truth is when all this is over, Obama wins and the real person running the campaign will be exposed. We all know by then it will be too late. Judging the posts we see, they have everything their way planed well.

So far for now, Obama did not win. Media won.
Hillary sure got quiet after she tried to attack Obama on Saturday night and got slapped down by John Edwards.

Acting like a spoiled brat to start the second half of the debate Saturday night did nothing for her chances either.  Did you see that pout?????  Reminded me of my 5 year old when i told him we are not going to the video store.

All the world needs to see that pout and wonder if Hillary is up to the task of being President.
Someone on the Do Not Call list got a call from the Obama campaign, and that is what the Clinton campaign is talking about? OMG, lets have Congressional investigations, trials, and impeachments!! This country has completely gone to hell in a handbasket.
Since there is no "national primary" Senator Clinton's supposed lead in the national polls means nothing.  I agree with Nashville fan, if the junior senator from New York has all that experience I would hope that she can give some (after 35 years I would hope for at least 10) REAL examples of things that she has done (her husband's record doesn't count).

That said, Senator Obama doesn't appear to have done anything illigal with the phone calls so she (Senator Clinton) needs to quit whining about it.
What is Obama's record? He doesn't really discuss it.

Since it actually ISN'T against state law to make these calls in a "presidential preference primary", it looks like 1) Clinton is grasping for anything she can, and/or 2) Clinton either does not know the law, or is trying to take advantage of people who don't by only letting people know about the part of the law that makes Obama sound bad. Either way, I don't think voters will buy it.
IT'S THE DECIDERS
not the people, IT'S THE MEDIA-STUPID!!! who chooses the president in our country.  We are just like cattle heading for the slaughter houses. I have seen the t.v. shows, the right wing radio shows and the blogs push and prod us in the direction they want us to go. I don't understand why they have chosen Barack Obama, instead of Hillary Clinton.  Too me there should not even be a question about who would be the best president for America. She is just so knowledgeable about every subject, every leader of every country,  all the problems facing our country, from Iraq to health care to the mortgage crisis and now a looming recession.
WAKE UP PEOPLE
The media is leading us down the primrose path with a young attractive candidate who gives pretty speeches, but I am quite sure lacks the abundance of knowledge that Senator Clinton obviously has.
Don't you think Senator Obama would make a great ambassador.
DUNCAN HUNTER,certainly not a favorite of mine, but he made a great appearance on the mornin Jo show.  Chriss Mathew's was puffing on and on about how great Obama was when in walked D. Hunter.  He informed Mr. Mathew's that he had recieved one delegate, and just wanted that fact known.  CHRISS M. really showed himself to be the smart alec jerk he usually is.  He sat ther and pouted like a little boy not getting the attention he thought he was due. IT WAS VERY FUNNY!!!
Speaking of delegates, Hillary only has one less than Obama, and one more than Edwards. Who (by the way)is as phoney as a three dollar bill.
SPEAKING OF BILL,
why is it alright for Michelle Obama to say she can't turn her husband white, but President Clinton gets laughed at by the media for saying he can't turn his wife into a man?
THE FIX IS IN PEOPLE.
TRY TO MAKE UP YOUR MINDS BASED ON TRUTH AND NOT ALL

Are you serious? That is spoken like a person who has never listened to any of his speeches or never bothered to peruse his website. So for your convenience, I will list this site for you to visit, knowing full well that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

(If anything is unclear feel free to ask, one thing good about Obama supporters, we know his stance on the issues)
God, its ridiculous if the Clinton folks are yapping about a robocall mistake! And one person! I mean can you image her response if it was the other way around: "And I can't believe Senator Obama's folks are stooping so low to conjure up an issue - they're desperate!"  Clinton is sinking fast - she is on the verge of a double digit NH blowout - her national numbers will sink after this loss.
This is what a Clinton race and Presidency would look like, a bunch of petty nonsense.  If she is still ahead in the national polls, hopefully that will end soon. This country NEEDS Obama, a new era for America is possible! I am a former Republican, now unaffiliated who has never voted anything but Republican in a Presidential race.  I am on my way to town hall to change my registration to Democrat so that I can support Obama in the Connecticut primary on February 5th
It seems to me men are doing the whining, for shame didn't your mother raise you better?.

After seeing Hillary and that pout Saturday night, i think your argument is pretty weak Melissa.....
Please I have listened and I still don't get it.
What is his record please.
*****BREAKING NEWS!!*****

Well, the specifics about Obama's plan in Iraq are starting to come out, and it is not pretty. A hed staffer for the Obama campaign speaking on FOX news this morning, said that Obama's Iraq plan would be as follows: on DAY ONE, Obama plan will be to immediately remove one brigade of American troops from Iraq on DAY ONE of his Presidency, and then remove one brigade of American troops each month, until ONE brigade of American troops and ONE counter terrorism unit is left to protect Democratic installations and fight Al Qaeda in Iraq. Obama and his campaign don't have a clue about what they are doing. People, our country is facing some of the most challenging times in American History, the ongoing war against Al Qaeda, unemployment above 5%, high oil/gas prices, a tanking economy that is going toward recession, mortgage foreclosure, millions of Americans without any health insirance, the list goes on and on. It is scary, but what is even more scary to me, is the fact the Obama Iraq plan that they just announced on FOX news. Incredible! Obama and his team don't knwo what they are talking about and showed their total lack of experience this morning. That is not a plan to get us out of Iraq safely, that is a plan that is insane and will get our men and women in uniform killed. Just on the whim, on DAY ONE, Obama will remove a brigade and keep removing brigades until we are down to one brigae and one counter terrorism unit to fight Al Qaeda in Iraq. WOW! JUST WOW!
The head staffer for Obama went on to say that she hopes everyone starts drinking the Obama elixir. Do the Obama people think the American people are stupid? What in the world is the Obama camp thinking? Obama and his campaign folks really are inexperienced. No wonder Obama continues to refuse to answer questions at his campaign stops, and just talks to the people. They obviously don't like answering questions on the campaign trail. When they do, they look like inexperienced people that don't have a clue. This FOX News interview this morning with the Obama campaign is but another example of that. Incredible!
The reason why Hillary is losing this battle is because Obama's message is more attractive and inspiring than hers. While she says 'let make America as good as it was in the 'good ole days', Obama askes Americans to make 'America better than it has ever been'. This is a new era and Hillary needs to stop living in the past.

P.S. Hillary-lovers please don't gimmie that crap about how 'she is not losing since she's leading in the national polls'. Richard from Clarksburg is right, there is no 'national primary'.
What I see is that people are choosing to follow a leader.  Key characteristic differences between the two of late:  Clinton doesn't take responsibility, leaders do; Leaders inspire; Leaders have a consistent message; Leaders are inclusive and build consensus.  Obama seems to be leading more than Clinton.  I hear from people who were fervent, partisan Republicans who are simply tired of the battles between politicians and are looking for someone to lead us out of the mess we're in and into a better future.
Thank you Shirley for your great observation.

It is also the MEDIA that is making Iowa and NH, two states with no comparison to the rest of the country, so important.  Their vote is not representative and yet the MEDIA jumps on it and causes sway to those that cannot think for themselves.  The primary system needs to be refined to ONE DAY, both parties!

I used to like Chris Matthews, but it seems like he has become more entertainer than journalist, and his ego is interfering with his panelists presentations.  Chris, let others speak, even if the show is your name.

Yes, the fix is in, the entertainment factor of the MEDIA is controlling what you hear, politically, nationally and internationally.  Whatever they can trump up into a news story comes before reality.
This is campaign is reaching its 'where's the beef' moment. Obama's pretty and makes a great emotional speech, it comes to policies and specifics about what direction his changes would take, he's short on substance.  However, if you read the policy positions he has posted, he is not afraid to steal from everyone: he stole Edwards' health care plan, is leaning toward Biden's Iraq withdrawl plan - has NO plan for the economy or any indication of whose advice he is relying on.  So it's time to ask the 1984 question - Where's the beef?!
NEW HAMPSHIRE PEOPLE ARE TRULY PHONIES AND HAVE NO MORALS, LOOK HOW MANY SUPPORT HILLARY, AND 10 PER CENT TO GULLANI.  MUST ALSO BE LOTS OF ANTI CHRIST ALSO, OF COURSE WHAT DO YOU EXPECT FROM A STATE THAT WON'T PROSECUTE CHILD MOLESTERS
Please she held her ground, she unlike Obama didn't not need anyone else to fight her battle.

JG Fraser of Columbia, SC asks, "Where's the beef?"

John Edwards is the beef. Edwards is the only candidate with clearly defined workable plans. Edwards is the best choice for this country. I'm tired of hearing about Obama and Clinton and I wish the national media would give Edwards the coverage he deserves.

Dude, it's not called "stealing". It's called, using good ideas (and he didn't "steal" Edwards healthcare plan). This is something that is necessary to "govern". (Apparently, people have become so used to "my way or the highway" thinking, that working with others is not appealing anymore.)

You can find his advisors and plans on his website, just a short Google search away.

Dream Team:  Barack Obama and Colin Powell
Who could argue with that?

Now, I'm not necessasrily defending Hillary, but there IS truth to the fact that EVERY little thing she or her people do is torn apart and scrutinized under a microscope that doesn't exist for any other candidate on either side and ESPECIALLY for Obama, who's been treated to rock star status from everyone since his announcements.

The phone call dispute is petty and stupid, but if Mark Penn was responsible for it, it would be front page news and that's the truth
Please she held her ground, she unlike Obama didn't not need anyone else to fight her battle.

Melissa, Mpls, MN (Sent Monday, January 07, 2008 10:44 AM)

Considering Dodd and Biden were always there to help defend her in the past debates, she looked like a little girl who had her favorite doll taken away from her when she went at it stone alone with Obama.  Edwards was just waiting for her to step into it and boy did she!

If you are looking for differences in ideology between the Democratic candidates, you are not going to find any. The remaining three are all dyed-in-the-wool left-wing moon-bats. It is funny to watch them "debate" each other on how each of their plans for the war, health care, the economy, whatever, is different from each others. There is no difference. The War - get out now. Health Care - completely run by the federal government, The Economy - tax, tax, and more tax. Illegal Immigration - let 'em all in. There is no difference between any of them.

I agree with those who think  our country's caucus/primary systems needs to be re-examined.  When the results of two states can be enough to pretty much determine who the nominees in each party will be, that just doesn't seem right.  What about the votes of those in the other 48 states?  I am still not convinced that a national primary wouldn't be better.

Where's the beef? The question only amplifies the fact that many Clinton supporters don't get what's happening. I guess they'll be scratching their heads again wondering "why" sometime tomorrow night.

The rest of us - we know exactly what the change talk is about. And its also likely that the Clinton campaign won't get it, and therefore will continue its slide in the polls.

The Republicans get it. Listen to the change in rhetoric from some of their campaigns, about climbing out of the partisan food-fight trenches. Its funny how the "most gifted person of our generation" isn't grasping a very simple concept.

I suspect everyone who supported Clinton's campaign because they saw this as a way to stick it to the other side might never get it.
Clinton's face has been around a while, can't you tell? Obama is new, brash, overbearing. But it will all come down to the final bell, when McCain wins the White House.
Sarah from VA reminded readers yesterday (January 6) that every winner of the Iowa caucus since the '70s, beginning with Jimmy Carter, was later nominated for the presidency.  Apparently, she overlooked the facts of her own report - that no winner of the Iowa caucus SINCE Carter had actually won the presidency.  Hopefully, that pattern will be repeated this time around.

If the misogynists out there don't quit beating up on Hillary Clinton, they're going to find voters rising to her rescue, just like Americans are prone to do when they see a bully standing over an intended victim.  In her case, I doubt she needs much help because she's been a fighter ever since she decided as a college student (or maybe even before) to become involved in public service. People complain that she's not friendly; well, as any supervisor can tell you, it takes a heck of a lot more effort to be a good manager than baking cookies for your staff.

It's strange, I think, that with all the things that America is admired for, things that make people want to come to this country even at a risk to their lives, we are still on a Dark Ages level when it comes to accepting a woman as president.  Fear is what it is, fear from the misogynists.  Back 60 years ago, Franklin Delano Roosevelt said it best: The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
Reality is that Obama wins and Hillary looses. When you look at all the money that's spent.........it sure is depressing. She should quit the campaign and donate the money to the poor.
As a Ron Paul supporter I could not vote for Hillary but hypothetically if Dr. Paul was't the Republican or independent nomanee I could vote for Obama over warlords McCain, Romney, Huckabee or Rudy.
Dream Team:  Barack Obama and Colin Powell
Change and experience in a broad-based, non-partisan package
Re the RoboCalls: this is pretty dicey because of the republican illegality there in the 2004 General. But as long as Obama's firm stops robocalling the wrong people today it shouldn't be too much trouble--and it would be more likely this is a mistake.
Do not call lists only apply to commercial telemarketing.  Just thought I would throw that fact in there.
"The head staffer for Obama went on to say that she hopes everyone starts drinking the Obama elixir. Do the Obama people think the American people are stupid?"

Yes. And they seem to be proving it.

"No wonder Obama continues to refuse to answer questions at his campaign stops, and just talks to the people."

That's the scariest thing about the prospect of this man becoming President. It would be one thing if he had a serious disagreement with Hillary's approach; but he's simply ignorant, and America can't afford an ignorant man at the helm, no matter how inspiring he is.

If he were responsible, he would use that power to inspire to promote someone who *can* lead and protect our country, rather than to promote himself.

Lord, what fools these mortals be.
to those who follow fox news. be careful of fox news conservative talk points and lies. it has been reported today that the attack dogs have been called out to go after obama with any thing that the public will swallow. they are to even go after his wife. family should be off limits. rush limbaugh has already made a racial statement.

the republicans life line is to keep us locked into bush style and partisan style politics. they must stop the democrats before the get to the general. watch where the independent vote lands. it will not be denied. very little independent votes will go to the republicans in this primary.
it seems all comments are favoring obama. is the obama camp flooding the system? where's the beef, obama supporters? the truth will prevail..he does not have the experience, period. for all the women who does not support or listen to hillary's message, you are doing a disservice to your children and this country. WE NEED A WOMAN LIKE HILLARY TO TAKE THIS COUNTRY BACK TO RIGHT PATH FROM IT'S WORST/NIGHTMARISH ALMOST 8 YEARS WITH CURRENT ADMIN. do not waste your time being sugar coated by obama and the media/oprah owned, think clearly, think with your head and heart and asked yourself, am i really going to support freshman(think bush)or, get a woman with hillary's guts to lead this country.obama may be electable, but not in this lifetime especially with the current situation our country is in.

I'm guessing you don't have a son or loved one in Iraq, M. Davis. We should have been out of there well before yesterday!

RECORDS and "THE BEEF" are past based (just like the slogan). Barack Obama offers this country HOPE and PROMISE in the FUTURE.

I want to be proud to be an American again.
Fellow Americans, please don't let the media and press coverage make up your mind for you. Powerful special interests have already widened the huge gap between the "haves" and "have nots".  Our strong middle class is what has kept us from being like third world countries who have only "very wealthy" and "poverty".....and it is dwindling dangerously fast. This election is critical to what happens to our nation in the future.  We don't need celebrities or pretty speeches...we need action from a strong leader who really cares.  Really listen, think, and vote for the one person who really wants to make a difference.  John Edwards is working hard for all of us and we need him NOW!
