The battle for New Hampshire

Posted: Monday, January 07, 2008 9:20 AM by Domenico Montanaro

So where’s the bounce? Well… The USA Today/Gallup poll has Obama leading Clinton, 41%-28%, with Edwards at 19%. In the GOP race, it’s McCain 34%, Romney 30%, and Huckabee 13%. More from the poll: “McCain narrowly trails Romney among Republicans but leads him among independents by almost 2-1. They can vote in either primary. In a USA TODAY poll in December, Romney had led McCain by seven points overall. Obama leads by eight points among Democrats and 23 points among independents. Women split between them evenly; he owes his lead to his edge among men, 49%-20%. Obama also leads narrowly among seniors and by an overwhelming 3-1 among voters under 35.”

The newest CNN/WMUR poll, meanwhile, has Obama leading Clinton by 10 points, 39%-29%, with Edwards at 16%. The day before, Obama and Clinton were tied at 33% each. In the GOP race, it’s McCain 32%, Romney 26%, Huckabee 14%, Giuliani 11%, and Paul 10%.

The Wall Street Journal: “After candidates who portrayed themselves as agents of change won the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton and Mitt Romney -- the Democratic and Republican stalwarts defeated there -- embraced the lesson, swiftly and drastically changing their campaigning styles… After rarely taking questions in the final days of her Iowa campaign, Mrs. Clinton opened the floor to two hours of queries in place of her prepared stump speech over the weekend. And she ramped up her attacks on Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic victor in Iowa, even as she tried to soften her image to address concerns about her likeability. Mr. Romney … was suddenly flanked by a massive ‘to do’ list of campaign promises and an illuminated sign declaring, ‘Washington is Broken’ -- an attempt to tar his leading opponent here, Arizona Sen. John McCain, the candidate with the most Washington experience in the Republican field.”

In a telephone conference call last night, NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports, the Clinton campaign accused the Obama camp of violating New Hampshire law by having automated calls to people who've signed up for the do-not-call list -- to rebut a Clinton attack on Obama's record on abortion rights.

NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan adds that the call in question, recorded by Wendy Frosh of Planned Parenthood of New England, defends Obama against a mailer sent by the Clinton campaign that says he voted “present” seven times on legislation related to women’s reproductive rights. “Barack has a 100% pro-choice record and has always been a champion for women’s rights. Hillary Clinton’s last minute smears won’t protect the right to choose,” the ad says. It asks voters to support Obama and Tuesday, and it ends by identifying itself as paid for by the Obama campaign.

Clinton’s campaign says that two to three of their supporters in New Hampshire who are on the federal Do Not Call List received a robocall from Obama’s campaign. Normally, federal law makes exceptions for political phone calls and non-profit groups, but according to the Clinton campaign New Hampshire law prevents robocalls going to voters on the list. The campaign also says that the message left on voters’ machines violates the 30-second time limit in which the sponsor of the call must be identified.  The call identifies the sponsor at 38 seconds, per the Clinton campaign.

The Obama campaign, responding through a statement from New Hampshire co-chair Ned Helms, says that their vendors “scrubbed” the list to confirm that no voters were on the Do Not Call List. “However if this call went to someone who should not have received it, we will make sure the vendor takes every step to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Helms’ statement read.

It is unclear if the people the Clinton campaign said were called were actually on the Do Not Call List. It has publicly identified just one woman who has received the calls. For its part, the Obama campaign has not denied that the woman in question was not on the Do Not Call List. They have also said their disclaimer, which identifies the sponsor of the ad, complies with federal law.

In the latest update on this controversy, Anburajan notes, Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton sent an email saying that the Clinton campaign had forgotten a special exception under the state law that may permit campaigns to contact voters on the "Do Not Call List." Here's the provision: "The provisions of this chapter shall apply to all state primary, general, and special elections, but shall not apply to presidential preference primaries."

The DO NOT CALL list does not pertain to politicians -- they conveniently exempted themselves from it when the law was passed a few years ago.

I'm from Iowa and on the Do Not Call list -- I received 15 calls from candidates in a 2 hour period on the day before the caucuses.  During the whole caucus blitz it would not be an exaggeration to say I received over 100 calls.
Amusing thing about that "No Call" list. Political campaigns are exempt from it.

Hillary can complain about Obama violating it, but they're doing nothing wrong. Should they abide by it? Out of consideration for the people on it, yeah they should, but if they call some people that might be on it, they are doing nothing illegal.
*****BREAKING NEWS!!*****

Well, the specifics about Obama's plan in Iraq are starting to come out, and it is not pretty. A hed staffer for the Obama campaign speaking on FOX news this morning, said that Obama's Iraq plan would be as follows: on DAY ONE, Obama plan will be to immediately remove one brigade of American troops from Iraq on DAY ONE of his Presidency, and then remove one brigade of American troops each month, until ONE brigade of American troops and ONE counter terrorism unit is left to protect Democratic installations and fight Al Qaeda in Iraq. Obama and his campaign don't have a clue about what they are doing. People, our country is facing some of the most challenging times in American History, the ongoing war against Al Qaeda, unemployment above 5%, high oil/gas prices, a tanking economy that is going toward recession, mortgage foreclosure, millions of Americans without any health insirance, the list goes on and on. It is scary, but what is even more scary to me, is the fact the Obama Iraq plan that they just announced on FOX news. Incredible! Obama and his team don't knwo what they are talking about and showed their total lack of experience this morning. That is not a plan to get us out of Iraq safely, that is a plan that is insane and will get our men and women in uniform killed. Just on the whim, on DAY ONE, Obama will remove a brigade and keep removing brigades until we are down to one brigae and one counter terrorism unit to fight Al Qaeda in Iraq. WOW! JUST WOW!
The head staffer for Obama went on to say that she hopes everyone starts drinking the Obama elixir. Do the Obama people think the American people are stupid? What in the world is the Obama camp thinking? Obama and his campaign folks really are inexperienced. No wonder Obama continues to refuse to answer questions at his campaign stops, and just talks to the people. They obviously don't like answering questions on the campaign trail. When they do, they look like inexperienced people that don't have a clue. This FOX News interview this morning with the Obama campaign is but another example of that. Incredible!

*applauds*
Someone that'll get us out of Iraq. We don't need to be there, we shouldn't have gone there in the first place, and it is long past time to get the hell out. Bravo to Obama's plan for doing just that. It is a war that more than 3/4 of the country no longer believes is necessary or even winnable. We need to focus on Pakistan and Afghanistan if we really want to get the terrorists plotting attacks in the US and in Europe. Obama's plan is to concentrate diplomatic and military efforts on those two countries--something the monkey we have now doesn't recognize considering he's giving both countries billions of our tax dollars. To think bin Laden could plan and execute his next attack using OUR tax money. Obama's plan ensures that doesn't happen.

Better than Hillary's plan, which is a continuation of more of the same BS.
Thank you Shirley for your great observation.

It is also the MEDIA that is making Iowa and NH, two states with no comparison to the rest of the country, so important.  Their vote is not representative and yet the MEDIA jumps on it and causes sway to those that cannot think for themselves.  The primary system needs to be refined to ONE DAY, both parties!

I used to like Chris Matthews, but it seems like he has become more entertainer than journalist, and his ego is interfering with his panelists presentations.  Chris, let others speak, even if the show is your name.

Yes, the fix is in, the entertainment factor of the MEDIA is controlling what you hear, politically, nationally and internationally.  Whatever they can trump up into a news story comes before reality.

Except that both states are extremely consistent with giving us the eventual nominee. At the very least, one of the two is if the winner is split between the two. It cuts the field and tells us who the most viable candidates are based on message because these people get to hear the candidates in very small, intimate settings and make their decisions based on those meetings.
Hear, hear Nashville fan, you hit the nail on the head.  A GOOD leader uses ideas and advice from those who have GOOD ideas and advice.  This country cannot be run as a 'one man' show, nor can it be run using ideas and advice from those who have BAD ideas and advice.  I believe Obama has the soul to break through the maze we now call Washington.  I believe Obama has the strength to brigh this Country together and repair our international relations.  I believe Obama is truly an agent of change, the time is now and the time is right.

I think my problem with so much emphasis on these early states is that it cuts the filed so early in the process. I realize that the campaign isn't over until the conventions nominate their candidates, but with the media crowning a defacto winner so early on, it  seems like that makes the primaries of some of the states that come later, somewhat irrelevant. Nobody enjoys voting for someone they have been told is going to lose.

Please I have listened and I still don't get it.
What is his record please.

Melissa, I couldn't agree more with you. We need a side by side comparison of Hillary and Barack's accomplsihments.

Hillary has had accomplishments going back 35 years. So, and maybe Melissa can get us started us here. What were Hillary's accomplishments in 1973? 1974? 1975?
Is it not ironic that Obama is listeningt to former President Clintons advisors,hm does he want to be a Clinton?
Hillary will do anything to try and win.  She will resort to crying if necessary. Change is coming and the status quo (Bill and Hillary) will resort to any dirty tricks possible.
RE:  Robo Calls

These calls are an epidemic and are invading the privacy of All American Voters.

Our members are taking a stand and saying enough is enough at the National Political Do Not Contact Registry at StopPoliticalCalls.org.

Here is a quote from a member this morning:

"I find it very frustrating... I tend to get calls at the WORST time.  I have a one year old daughter, and it NEVER fails that the phone will ring when I put her down for a nap or for bed.  Also my vote is PRIVATE... so who do you think you are calling with a survey to find out who I am voting for!!!  Stop calling me."

Melissa (Sent Monday, January 07, 2008 2:39 PM)

Are you suggesting that anyone who has ever advised Bill Clinton shouldn't advise anyone other than a Clinton?

The more interesting question is: If they supported Bill Clinton, why aren't they supporting Hillary?
Imagine Obama addressing the UN or a mideast peace conference or giving a state of the union address with the world watching.  If he has a fraction of the effect on the world opinion of us that he has on Americans, our international standing will rise again and I can travel without masquerading as a Swede for fear of hatred and retaliation abroad.
Ask Hillary where were her tears on 9-11?
It is very easy to blame other people for our missgivings.
If you can not take the heat get out of the Kitchen.
What kind of President will she be if she can not
accept defeat?
Now she is blaming the Press for it.

addendum:Hillary trying to denigrate Obama's speeches as just words? The Bible, the Koran, the Declaration of Independence, the Constituion, the Bill of Rights, Churchill "we have nothing to fear but fear itself," Kennedy,"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."  and so on, are these not words with the power to move human beings to act???
Huckabee! While Gallup Pole today shows him 3rd in New Hampshire he is 1st nationally! Check out his website and see why! ...

Cry me a tune, Hillary... Just wait until someone finds Obama's shadow! Elect McCain to run a prison camp. Romney is the true candidate of change. Edwards? ... no comment is worth it.
If clinton wins the race and gets voted in we can all kiss this country goobye !! The only thing women should be running is the dishwasher and laundry machine and half cant even do that without getting confused. This world has enough problems without letting a women giving advice so lets start a good thing here and now !! keep them in the house and take away thier right to vote and speak in public .
Well said Laurie Smith.
My son was fortunate enough to come back from Iraq not only safely but with a new perspective on our Government. I'm pleased to inform you he wants to be a proud American again too. That is why Obama is his candidate of choice.
I'm sure you know our soldiers have to watch what they say but I can assure you Obama has many supporters among our servicemen in Iraq.
Just as an FYI, one option for voters in states where the Do Not Call List does NOT apply to political calls is the National Political "Do Not Call" Registry found at www.StopPoliticalCalls.org.  It's non-partisan and non-profit.  Erin Nelson
the media would love a mccain vs obama with a ron paul for the spoiler.

don't get caught up in it.
************ Wisely Said Barbara*************  You would think Edwards and Clinton would work together and be on the same ticket.

Fellow Americans, please don't let the media and press coverage make up your mind for you. Powerful special interests have already widened the huge gap between the "haves" and "have nots".  Our strong middle class is what has kept us from being like third world countries who have only "very wealthy" and "poverty".....and it is dwindling dangerously fast. This election is critical to what happens to our nation in the future.  We don't need celebrities or pretty speeches...we need action from a strong leader who really cares.  Really listen, think, and vote for the one person who really wants to make a difference.  John Edwards is working hard for all of us and we need him NOW!
To Laura Smith - so you have a son or child in Irag to make a well informed decision.    Your validity/credibility has just been lost by your statement.    Obama thinks (as a child would) let's just pull our troops out.   We made a huge mess in that country because of our current leader - you just can't go in and take troops out.   The terrorism alone.      We never ever ever ever ever should have invaded that country but to vote for an unseasoned person in office is not the best ideas.  If I need to have major surgery then I shouldn't use and experienced surgeon - I just get an intern to perform the surgery since it would be fresh face.   Come on people - let's think.
I am not sure it's Hilary grasping at straws as much as the American public and media. Has the race really come down to something this ridiculous? I mean, this very site has an entire page dedicated to talking about "robocalls" made from the Obama campaign. Watch what Hilary says here... I say "Amen". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVlwH7-05Fk
This is definitely all about media manipulation and perception. The day after the Iowa caucus headlines read that Obama won an amazing victory and Clinton suffered humiliating loss. On page three, the same papers indicated that, in the race for DELEGATES,  Obama had 16, Clinton 15, and Edwards 14. Hmmm, a lot closer race than you might think.

Someone will always criticize Hillary Clinton, she is too strong, too soft, she makes a funny face, she insults an opponent. The bottom line is she hangs in there and keeps campaigning. That is the type of person I want as president. Not someone who makes an amusing remark and then walks away because there is no more depth. Change? what change? Where, when, is there a plan?
THIS E-MAIL IS BEING CIRCULATED ABOUT OBAMA... IS ANY OF IT FACT???

> from Minn.  or Michigan that was sworn in on the Koran,  one or was it two

> don't  you think?

No, the email is false and if you follow the link below it takes you to snopes.com which disputes the email point by point.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp

It is sad that politicians and reporters resort to such tactics.  Parts of the information in the email came from a story in a conservative magazine, it shows they Republicans believe Obama would be more difficult to beat the Clinton, which I have to agree is true.
Republicans, Democrats, Independents...every person who cares about the future of our country! Unite for Obama! Win or loose tonight, this shows that there is a battle ahead. Let your voices be heard.
