From NBC's Lauren AppelbaumEarlier today,
Romney said he has a
better chance of beating Obama than
McCain does. "Barack
Obama may well become the Democratic nominee, and if we put up a long-term serving senator, who can talk about his years and years of experience, Barack Obama will do to him what he did to the other Democrats who made the same pitch," Romney said in Nashua, N.H. "We are going to have to have someone who can say, 'I'm not only from the outside, I'm somebody who knows how to bring change, and I can bring the change that America needs.' "
During a media avail in Portsmouth this evening, reporters asked McCain to respond. "I'm not spending today responding to questions or negative ads or negative comments about my candidacy," McCain said. "Today is day where we thank the people for their support, we talk about our vision for the future, and how I can serve. Those kinds of comments have been going on all day, and that's not the way we campaign."
McCain said he is an agent of change, however, and cited his involvement with the Abramoff investigation and efforts to change the Rumsfeld strategy in Iraq to the one we have now. He also avoided answering any questions about the status of his campaign, saying he is a confident a win in New Hampshire will carry over to other states.
