High turnout as towns seek extra ballots

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:10 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
The New Hampshire Secretary of State's office is in the process of locating extra ballots to ship to towns that have expressed concern that supplies are running low. The concern is primarily on the Democratic side, officials say.

"The towns that are calling now are experiencing heavy turnout, and see their piles of ballots starting to drop at a rate faster than they're comfortable with," said Deputy Secretary of State Dave Scanlan. "They're also stating to us that it's the Democratic ballots that have them more concerned than the Republican ballots."

Scanlan said the office is in the process of locating overrun ballots, and will courier them to the towns that say they are running low.

Secretary of State Bill Gardner had predicted a turnout of 500,000, which would be a new record for the state. Scanlan said it's too soon to say if that target will be exceeded. "We're certainly encouraged, and if it goes beyond what the secretary predicted, that's great."

Scanlan said today is the warmest primary day he can remember. "Voters in New Hampshire typically turn out for elections, and the weather doesn't seem to bother them too much," he said. "Having nice weather today only helps."

At the polling location in Londonderry, more than 50 people were waiting outside for the doors to open at 7 am. Robert Saur, moderator pro-tem for the town, said he was expecting 70 percent turnout of the nearly 15,000 registered voters. "We're trying to keep everyone moving through here," he said.

Londonderry leans slightly Republican, with 5,641 registered Republicans and 3,620 registered Democrats. There are 6,105 registered undeclared voters who can vote in either primary. Early this morning, it was the blue, Democratic ballots that appeared to be most common.

God bless the US&A
"False Hope" this? Or the people's flexing their democratic muscles? Obama is fundamentally right: It is only We the People, not any individual, that can  effect change. And indeed the medium of turnout is the message of change.
Hooray for elections--free, fair, peaceful elections. How lucky we are to have them!
My sister Jodi Bell waited in line for 10 hours to vote for Huckabee.  I love him, and so does Jesus.  He will win.
That's the Black Obama Factor!  Go Obama......let's get em back!
Here's hoping for a big McCain win!
Obama is really bringing them out....
Good news for Obama and Romney...Bad news for Clinton and McCain...don't be surprised if Romney wins tonight...I still think McCain wins but Romney could pull it out since it appears that undecideds are voting in the Democratic primary
one in the stink, two in the pink
Good comments here, not sure who I would vote for but it won't be Obama.  Cannot believe media has not checked out the web site for his faith, Trinity United Church of Christ as he stated on Oprah.  Take a look, nothing in there mentions America, you must be black to join and the symble is even of the country of Africa.  I think Obama is bought and paid for by Oprah, and if he wins Welcome to the United States of Africa.
I think it's amazing that American's are turning against Hillary, what ever is wrong with us.  Here she fires civil servants (in Travelgate,) refuses to act the part of the obedient housewife, leaving important papers on her coffee table for two years until they were needed by her to respond to a court order.  I have a wife who works hard at home, but Bill's wife is out and about (in so many ways,) and only found those important papers at the last moment.

Something must be very wrong...  Why can't all of us have spouse's who get angry whenever they don't get their way.

I know what you're thinking, you think I'm not an authentic supporter.  But I am.  After all, where else am I going to find a woman whose been in politics for 35 years? (her words, repeated many times.)

If only I had the choice to vote for someone like she claims to be, an actual advocate for a strong defense, a real proponent of children.  Many men (of which I am one,) would gladly vote for a woman, but we want a woman such as Laura Bush or Rosalind Carter, or a younger Barbara Bush -- but not this woman.

Dear Hillary and Bill,

If you want to retain your place of respect in the Democratic Party, you should seriously consider dropping out NOW!!

There are polls out showing that you could actually lose in New York on February 5th.

The time has come for both of you to be peace-makers in the Democratic Party. We know how much you both love the Party, and the country. You cannot win this nomination. If you continue, and humiliate yourself by losing your own home state, your legacy (both of your legacies) will be forever tarnished.

This is not just my thought. I've been TV "channel surfing" all morning and reading blogs all over the internet. This idea is everywhere today. The realization and acceptance has set in that this Democratic contest is, for all intents and purposes, over.

Do the right thing, not just for you, but for the Democratic Party, and the country. You both have been revered and greatly admired. Don't risk losing that respect by dragging out this process when it has become very obvious that it would be futile to continue.
Sounds HOPEful to me, and I don't mean Arkansas!
Wow!  Whoever wins, it's a good day for democracy in this country.
High turnout seems like it will help the "outsiders" Obama and McCain.
Viva la Revolucion!!!!
tsunami coming.
Great news for Obama!
I'm thrilled to see the high turnout for Democrats.  We have great candidates to choose from.  I was disappointed however to see Bill Clinton shooting out the heavy negative stuff.  This from a guy at whose feet I believe we can lay the Iraq war.  If he had been able to control himself, Al Gore would not have run from their record and would have been elected.  We might be at war but it would be in Afghanistan.
WOW! This is some kind of election. I am so glad to see Americans excited about the country and its future. People must be very unhappy with how things have gone the last eight years.

Extra Ballots need in NH..Hillary importing illeggal imigrants to vote for her LMAO WAAAAAAAAAAA
I just hope voters will do their homework on all the candidates and not take what the media says as the truth and only the truth.  They want to pick the candidate of their choice not yours. Some candidates are not like what you see on TV.  Check them out.
these politicians have grossly underestimated the vote of those who are 35 and under.  this war has gone on for 6 years.  we have seen our friends killed and wounded due to an unjust war. in these 6 years, we have seen our young children enter into their teenage years and as parents have to wonder, will this war continue for another 6 years? will it affect my own children? if so, wont a draft have to come into play?

this is why the younger people care so much and we will not accept politics as usual. enough is enough. we are not our parents and we will not be spoon fed this washington bullshit any longer.
It occurs to me watching Iowa and now New Hampshire that Party Professionals in both parties and the media elite they hobnob with have spent a lot of time talking only to each other. Both republicans and democrats, right wing media stars, and left-wing hatemeisters have been totally bunkered for these last few years. The American People, starting in Iowa, now New Hampshire, soon in SC and finally on Super Tuesday are finally going to be heard.

I am so proud to be an American. What a great country. What a great democracy. No matter what the outcome in November, this election is revitatizing us as a nation!
I would wager that this news is good for Obama, bad for Hillary, and bad for McCain. If the turnout is so incredibly heavy on the Democratic side, then this seems to imply a large number of independents are showing up to the Demcoratic primaries and, given Obama's wide appeal and support among independents, they are likely turning out for him.
At the same time, this robs McCain of independent votes which he desperately needs on the Republican side. Mitt Romney has higher levels of support among tried-and-true Republicans, but can lose if a heavy flow of independents are voting in the primary.
Who knows.
I personally like McCain and Obama very much and feel that if they each won their parties nomination, for the first time in a long time, the general election would be about which candidate is better for the country and not about voting for the lesser of two evils and which candidate sucks less.
The high voter turnout in both Iowa and New Hampshire is indicative of how eager we voters are for a new direction in this country.  Everyone wants to put the past 8 years of errors, deceptions, and general ill will generated by the present Administration behind us.
I heard Hillary was sneaking around stealing them...
High turnout is great, but I think from Tom's perspective people are tired of 20 years of Bush, Clinton Bush and the mere thought of 24 years of bush, clinton bush clinton is more than most of us can handle. . . .
Sources on the ground tell me that Portsmouth and Keene are running especially low on Democratic ballots, but Bill Gardiner's office is sending more by courrier to the affected pricincts.  This may be an all time record as stated above.  A 70% turnout in Londonderry or anywher is incredible.  I'm in neighboring Vermont, but have long experience and know a lot of people in NH.  Phone call this morning to Hopkinton revealed a lot of enthusiasm and record turnout.  This bodes well for Mc Cain and especially Obama.  Let's get a mandate no matter who wins so we can move forward, regardless of party, as a nation.
this is in response to Samantha who wrote:  "this is why the younger people care so much and we will not accept politics as usual. enough is enough. we are not our parents and we will not be spoon fed this washington bullshit any longer."
I honestly don't know who your parents are, but as a parent who when younger marched against the Vietnam War & watched my friends die in an unjust war 35 yrs ago, I have been wondering where the young people of your generation have been hiding. I am only glad that you are now coming out in droves to vote -- whoever you vote for. just keep involved. it's your country & your future. and only you can keep it safe & secure. so keep on being feisty & protect my grandkids!
I voted this morning. I was still arguing the pros and cons of the three top democrat contenders to myself as I walked in to vote. This is the first time I have struggled so much with choosing a candidate in my 10 years as a citizen of the US. Whoever wins, I will be content that we have a good candidate for president.

By the way Hillaryhater - I took my passport with me just in case I ran into anyone like you. And yes, I did vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton.
I just don't get why everyone is counting out Hillary Clinton. Obama has the momentum, no doubt…but it is a long way from being decided. Look at the polls across the nation. The Obama fire has not caught on everywhere. Infact, it is basically contained to Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. 3 states do not decide the nominee. I think the other 47 states would like to have some input.

Looking at those polls, Clinton has a 20% or higher lead over Obama in many of the "key" states. California, Nevada, Florida, New Jersey, Michigan…how does that sound? Now you have a 5-3 state lead for Clinton and many more delegates for Clinton.

In other words, this is far from over. Clinton needs to regroup, refocus, and start believing in her campaign again.

Clinton supporters…don't give up!!! Your candidate is viable, electable, and ready to lead, and bring change, to our country.

Lastly, when pundits and historians look back at the 2008 primaries, they will say that Obama (and his early push) lit the fire in the Clinton campaign. Being the frontrunner and presumed winner is not truly running a campaign. Now Clinton is being tested and she is, and will continue to, display her leadership skills and highlight her experience as an agent of change and as a highly effective leader.
Democrats looking for more ballots.  At least it appears to be for good reasons this time.  Hope they can get out of New Hampshire without lawsuits and recounts.
Time for a new day in America. Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton ... GIVE US A BREAK! Kudos to the folks from Iowa and NH for seeing through the Hillary smoke screen and finding nothing there but hubris. Good riddance Hill and Bill.
Very well stated, Samantha.  I was beginning to think that most of the under 35 crowd were too involved in their own little worlds to care about what was going on.  Thank you from a child of the 60's.
My Best Friend is leaving next week for his first 18 month deployment in Afghanistan.  I am very saddened that I may have seen my friend this past weekend for the last time.  You bet I am mad as heck over what is happening in this country, and the useless poorly managed wars being run in the middle east by the repukes.  And I am certainly not alone.  This overwhelmingly greater democrat turnout at the first primary and caucus over the repukes, is a testament to how we are angry with how this country is being run...and the repukes running for their nomination are nothing more than Bush clones who'll keep us going into the crapper like Bush, and mismanage the wars so as to keep us entrenched in IRaq and Afghanistan forever, so that they can make money out of it for themselves and their friends.  Meanwhile, my friend is paying the ultimate price for the repuke's stupidity.  If they had done their job correctly and properly managed the war in Afghanistan, my friend would not be going over there to help train the Afghans to protect themselves.
Wow.

I amazed at Rachael.  If they are going to lose then let thm lose.  Don't advise quitting before the first ballots are counted.  I mean, it's not like polls have ever been wrong!

And what would be the harm to the party if the Clintons lost New York?  Wouldn't it actually consolodate Obama's position even more?!

Let things play out.  The system is not that fragile.
Wow.  Incredible news for our country.   Even the cynics have to feel a bit patriotic when they see something like this.
I worked registering voters in the Iowa caucus last week.  'Tsunami' is an understatement for what is happening in our wonderful country right now. Over 750 people showed up at our caucus - 250 four years ago.  Registered many young voters, registered many independents and Republicans that changed affiliation to Democratic party.  Hang on folks!!
Bill, please stop bashing Obama.  We Democrats love you and Hillary for the peace a prosperity of the 90s.  This race is about the future and the negative campaigning that you and Hillary and Mark Penn have been doing since the first signs of Iowa are proving that you all participate in politics of the past and not the future.  Sorry Bill, but the race is over.  Let us get behind Obama and leave the negativity to the Republicans and we will watch them dwindle.  Hillary can become Senate Majority leader and continue to make history as the country moves on from this stale, dirty, politics of the Bush/Cheney/Rove era.  This race is for the future of America, not Hillary and not even the Democratic party--but for America's future!  I am proud to be an American!!!!!
I am so excited to see that people are turning out in record numbers.  Over 14months ago, my husband, Art(Former Supt. of Schools) said that Obama was going to be our next President.  He had heard a speech he made and was very impressed with his intelligence and ability to reach all Americans!
Ron Paul seems the logical choice - especially with all the candidates talking about "change" in Washington.
Clinton has taken on the republicans for years and keeps winning. They have thrown everything they could at her and she is still the Best canidate in the race.
She can win and has republicans scared so will. Republicans however love the notion of facing a man with a troubled past and drug history who has not even a full single year of office experience and if were not careful and Elect the only Democrat who can win in Clinton then we will be forced to sit and watch the republican machine tear down a crackhead with no experience.
Crackheads should not be even on the Ticket. Obama is a Crack head just goggle it He admits it. This will send the Republican spin doctors into orbit this kinda amunition.

Wise up

Clinton in 2008
I too am very disappointed in the nasty attacks made by Bill Clinton.  It appears to be a desperation ploy, which, perhaps, it is.  It's great that there is such a huge turnout, as it has always astounded me that so many people do not vote in the presidential race, and ultimately, the election.  We have very important choices to make for this country.
Dr. Ron Paul

The candidate who doesn't just talk about change.  He will address the issue of our runaway foreign policy, restore the value of the dollar, bolster our economy and get rid of the income tax.
I like Mr. Obama and if he wins the nomination, I will vote for him.  I admire Mrs Clinton and think that she is the brightest, the best and the most ready to be president.  She doesn't need Bill to tell her what to do and she will be true to herself.  I think that sexism is being demonstrated but no one wants to be called a racist including the republicans.  Hillary has rec'd more bad press than any other candidate.
Has it occurred to anyone else that the heavy Democratic voting by Independents could suggest that they would rather cast their General Election (Republican) vote against Obama than Clinton?  Could it be that they fear victory in a contest against Clinton, but welcome one against Obama......just wondering.....
I can not believe that MSNBC and NBC and CNN and all the media are just not even looking into Barack Obama's inflated resume...he says he was a College Professor..he was not...he was only a visiting lecturer....he does not have the experience to become our President...please America WAKE UP!!!!
Ron Paul gets more money from active and retired military than any other candidate combined.

What better endorsement for our next Commander in Cheif.
