High turnout as towns seek extra ballots

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:10 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
The New Hampshire Secretary of State's office is in the process of locating extra ballots to ship to towns that have expressed concern that supplies are running low. The concern is primarily on the Democratic side, officials say.

"The towns that are calling now are experiencing heavy turnout, and see their piles of ballots starting to drop at a rate faster than they're comfortable with," said Deputy Secretary of State Dave Scanlan. "They're also stating to us that it's the Democratic ballots that have them more concerned than the Republican ballots."

Scanlan said the office is in the process of locating overrun ballots, and will courier them to the towns that say they are running low.

Secretary of State Bill Gardner had predicted a turnout of 500,000, which would be a new record for the state. Scanlan said it's too soon to say if that target will be exceeded. "We're certainly encouraged, and if it goes beyond what the secretary predicted, that's great."

Scanlan said today is the warmest primary day he can remember. "Voters in New Hampshire typically turn out for elections, and the weather doesn't seem to bother them too much," he said. "Having nice weather today only helps."

At the polling location in Londonderry, more than 50 people were waiting outside for the doors to open at 7 am. Robert Saur, moderator pro-tem for the town, said he was expecting 70 percent turnout of the nearly 15,000 registered voters. "We're trying to keep everyone moving through here," he said.

Londonderry leans slightly Republican, with 5,641 registered Republicans and 3,620 registered Democrats. There are 6,105 registered undeclared voters who can vote in either primary. Early this morning, it was the blue, Democratic ballots that appeared to be most common.

Lets not be to quick to believe that Obama is any different than other old guard politicians, he has wonderful stage presence and seems very articulate. However, his party has vacated main stream America, invalidated the ideology of the Democatic party and as far as I am concerned split America into what is commonly refered to as Blue and Red.  At least the Republican party remains true to their origins, at least you can tell where the Republican candidates stand, this cannot be said for the Democratic candidates.  And as for Hillary, if any sane person in America would know what her real agenda is, she would not even be a viable candidate.
I just voted for John Edwards. I want change and I think that he has more than enough drive to actually get it done. I like Obama as a person but I do not think that he will follow through on many of this change promises. He strikes me as a "can't we all just get along" type of person. There is nothing wrong with that because it is quite similar to me but in a Prez I want more.
I am a supporter of hillary clinton and will always be.  She brings experience and I believe is best qualified not to say that Obama is not a good at inspiring people.  However, when I look at current events, our economy, healthcare I just don't see someone with so much limited experience being able to lead effectively.  She may not be as graceful and inspirational but when it comes to it, do I want someone to inspire me? Or do I want someone that will lead with experience?  I think he would be an amazing vice presidential candidate this time around and then run in the future once he has been on the world stage.  The only world experience he seems to have is his personal relationship with Kenya and that for some reason troubles me, not because I have a problem with that country but rather because he's not doing it as a politician, he's involved because his family is as well.  Just an opinion, the same way I respect others.
We as citizens "say" we hate negative campaigns and commercials but, just looking over all the disprectful slurs and name-calling in the previous comment - the voting public is obviously full of crap.  The primaries are not a joke!  Take this reponsibility seriously.  All of these candidates deserve at least a modicum of respect for their time and efforts.  You all seem to be treating this as some sort of game.  I would wager that the comments with the most snide remarks come from individuals who know very little about the complete pool of candidates and their platforms.  It's much easier to fall back on insults than in reading books, newspapers and magazines.  If all your information comes from the internet, you are woefully uninformed.
I would say give others a chance. I am a Deomcrat, I love to see other families in the White House other than the Bushs and the Clintons. In between the two families we have had 13 years of goverence. We need a new direction in OBAMA. VIVA OBAMA
I almost felt sorry for Hillary when I saw her display of emotion. ALMOST! Knowing the Clintons, it probably was staged. I still remember whwn Bill was 'feeling the pain' with some victims of a flood in the South, and the next minute, supposedly off-camera, he was guffawing..

We need some authenticity, independence and candor. Even though I disagree with 90% of McCain's policies, he's the man on the Republican side, and on the Dem side it's anyone but Hill. And since Barack has the best chance of winning in NOv., I can go with him.
Is it true Obama's mother and father never divorced because they were never legally married?
No question that Obama is the "I have a dream" candidate. No question either that the many pressing issues this nation faces require pragmatic political skills. I firmly believe that Hillary has those qualities and as such will be an agent of change. Obama offers pleasant and aspirational intangibles but his record shows old-school politics. A wolf in sheeps clothes.
Don't know what planet Adam and Jodi Bell are from, but Mike Huckabee is not Jesus nor is he (Huck) anointed to win. Anyone who waits ten hours in line to vote for him needs a 72 hour hold.  There is medication for delusions such as theirs.
Hillary Clinton is the ONLY candidate with the experience required to deal with today's tricky foreign issues. John Edward is right up there, as was Joe Biden. I would not even consider voting for a candidate who does not have a "green" platform to help free us from foreign oil. John McCain is yesterday's "hawk"; he looooves the military.  We can't afford him.  The problem with Bloomberg is Who the Hell is Bloomberg??  Nobody West of Pennsylvania knows who the guy is!
Clinton has taken on the republicans for years and keeps winning. They have thrown everything they could at her and she is still the Best canidate in the race.
She can win and has republicans scared so will. Republicans however love the notion of facing a man with a troubled past and drug history who has not even a full single year of office experience and if were not careful and Elect the only Democrat who can win in Clinton then we will be forced to sit and watch the republican machine tear down a crackhead with no experience.
Crackheads should not be even on the Ticket. Obama is a Crack head just goggle it He admits it.
Clinton in 2008
IT'S NOT RACISM-that's RESPONSIBLE for killing young black males(mostly).
The rest of the World is interested and watching the democratic process in action for the eligibility to represent the two political parties in the Presidential Election in USA. Fascinating. Canadians as your neighbours are more emotionally involved. I personally prefer Obama and hope the turnout at polls will sustain the high rate through the entire process.
It's not over, there are plenty more primaries as stated by Russ from Florida.  However, Hillary lost me yesterday when she started sounding like Karl Rove.  I'm not the only person sick and tired of this type of campaigning.  Our country needs shock therapy to get back to being real; to demand candidates with vision, independence and the ability to energize Americans to take action.  I am hoping that the voters will continue to turnout in mass numbers, and start scaring the socks off of these status-quo politicians!  We can thank Obama for a great deal of enthusiasm that has brought this recent change.
keep fighting bo keep fighting, we love you baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obama is the perfect fit for the 2008 election. I am glad he is running. He blends the intelligence, hard
work, wit and courage into a gentle linconeque frame.
It does not hurt that he and his family present many
levels of the american racial heritage. What a
candidate to solve the many national and inter
national problems we all face. Imagine as travels to
Europe, Afica, Asia and the MiddleEast.

God speed his victory!!

Does Jesus only love Huckabee?? What nonsense.
As long as he is still in the running, I will be voting for Edwards on Feb 5th. Clinton and Obama have received the most money from the health care industry according to the Center for Responsive Politics. See:

Hey Russ From Florida

POLLS say Hillary has a lead nation wide....but the VOTES say we want Obama, so you listen to your polls, and I'll be watching the victory parties from the candidates who win VOTES not POLLS.
Hi Adam in New York...

pretty sure I'll open up a big can of words from you with this one...(maybe a sermon?)...but your words seem to imply that Huckabee is the only candidate Jesus loves?

wow.
High turnout suggests that agents of change on both sides will prevail.  Some have suggested that it is a forgone conclusion McCain will win tonight.  I believe it will be the Huckster who will win.  He is the only agent of change among all the Republicans.

Obama will win on the Democrat side, because he is seen as the most outside-the-beltway candidate.
Good news about the turn out.

I just hope people look above and beyond the likeable factor. We need a real leader, one is who absolutely strong and smart enough to get us out of this mess.

I've seen almost all debates. Frankly, Obama almost always comes out in the safe middle. I didn't hear anything new. How long will the media give him a pass at explaining his stance? Will he be able to withstand the barrage of attack the republican's will hurl his way if he gets the nomination? From flip flopping on issues to missing a vote in the senate. Past drug use doesn't help either.

My biggest concern for him is I feel he is very naive on issues and he hasn't really truly explained himself. What would his foreign policy be? Will be able to stand toe to toe with Putin, Sarkozy and the likes?

As much as unpopular Hilary had become, I am more than confident she'll be able to fulfill that role. I've seen her campaign in New York. I would say I am impressed by her resolve, her intelligence, her stance. She has a mind of her own. She's no push over. We need a strong leader now more than ever.

I simply don't see that in Obama nor Edwards (who appears to be allying himself with Obama in the hopes perhaps of a VP spot).

"My sister Jodi Bell waited in line for 10 hours to vote for Huckabee.  I love him, and so does Jesus.  He will win.
Adam Bell, New York"

Since Jesus loves everybody equally, isn't your statement pretty irrelevant?

God Bless America with a democrat, and not a republican who tries to legislate with the bible.  Let people FIND "the way", it's useless to make laws based on it.
I went on my lunch break and stood in line for almost 40 minutes to vote.  I am 38 years old and have never had to stand in line to vote since I have been of voting age.  I have never been more proud of the people of my state coming out to vote...especially those young people and undeclareds who are voting in the primary for the first time.  We in NH are definitely looking for a "change."  I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve ~ I am so excited to see the results!
Sympathetic - tell us just what "experience" Hillary has. Basically, the answer is "none."
...The fat lady hasn't even entered the building.
Hillary is not out of this race, and she should not be losing momentum! This is a big country, and two states hardly decide the nominees. Obama is too inexperienced. He just doesn't have the years in politics that Clinton does to run America in a time of war. I think he is starting to come across as egotistical, and unappealing to the masses.

It seems like the ultimate race will be between Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Romney, Huckabee, and McCain. May the best person be elected because they are the right person for the job, not merely because of the trials and tribulations of each of their respective campaigns.

The issue that should be most important to all Americans is international terrorism. If we are all dead are any of the other issues even relevant?
It's GREAT that Democracy is surging in the United States of America !!  It's also great that the comments, so far, are mostly very civil and readable.  No matter who your candidate is, most of you have been able to say so without being sarcastic or nasty.  Hooray for you !!  and Hooray for Democracy !!  Maybe we really can see the day when we can pull together for this nation and watch it become great in the eyes of the world, again !!
That's right, Jerry. Obama IS 'bringing them out'. It's called 'momentum' - something you guys on the Right seem to not have this time around. Your side is fractured and it looks as if the least conservative of your bunch may end up getting the nomination, much to the chagrin of the Rightwing Talk-Radio Squad... especially Rush. Awww, poor baby!

Face it: Rightwing conservatism is on its way OUT. Your side is quickly becoming irrelevant.
Quote :"My sister Jodi Bell waited in line for 10 hours to vote for Huckabee.  I love him, and so does Jesus.  He will win."

But...but...Jesus loves everybody! Remember how you were taught that at age...boy...four or so? You didn't forget that fact did you? I think that Jesus will stay out of this race in spite of those who would try to drag him into it. He has more important things to do: Like making sure that my Dad and my cherished canine companion Kelli are have a good time pheasant hunting up there in the great beyond.
Obviously a lot of cross overs from Independents that usually vote Republican. Now they're voting for Barack. They smell blood in the water for Hillary, and will help finally stick a fork in the Clinton's.

TWANG!!!
John Edwards is the real deal. As a Christian, educated, middle class, working woman, I feel Edwards is truly fighting for the American people and the American dream. Just do your research and look at his carefully laid-out plans. NO OTHER CANDIDATE HAS DETAILED HIS OR HER PLANS FOR CHANGE. John Edwards in 08!! Come on NH make us proud.
Perhaps the Democrats are voting twice or on behalf of dead people -- as has been the case in the past -- anyway, it is a great day to let the "pols" know that we want change from both the Dems and Reps -- next we need term limits on the Congress --- get those self serving fools out of there !!!!!
*******Just remember********* The Media is building Obama up and the Media will eventually take or bring him down****** Enjoy his few wins now..........

Wow - you people kill me.   Let me fall for a candidate because he has a catch phrase and we will ruin this country.  Change - Obama is politician so I am not sure where the change comes in.    It's a shame you all fall for media hype.   I hope Obama wins the presidency because I so want to watch him fall.   Good Luck Mr. Obama - you pot smoking - coke snorting bullsh>>>g guy.  Let me vote for you please because you have charisma.  The inexperience and lack of voting in the senate means nothing.
I am surprised that after Bush being president for 8 years people think that Obama is a good candidate. He does not have the credentials, don't make the mistake again of electing somebody just because they look good and are articulate. The heavy turnout at the polls? maybe the independents want to vote for a republican and Obama is the better person to beat?
Mike Huckabee is straight up, honest and tells it the the way he sees it....That scares alot of non-Christian people. What, the possibility of electing a God fearing Christian man into the White House. And they have been trying so hard to remove God from the government, our schools and our money
Yeah!  Obama for President!  We need someone who knows how to use crack and cocaine!

We need a socialist to take our hard earned money and put it in the hands of those that don't like to work.
Re: Hillary for President - she is probably the most qualified of the lot in either party.  The issue that concerns me is this:  we live in a country where conservatively half of the population intensely dislikes or even loathes the Current Occupant.  I am one of these people.  I know firsthand that it is not good for the USA when this dynamic is in place.  If Hillary is elected we will simply be swapping wich half of the country hates the president.  More than anything we need someone that can bridge the Great Divide that exists in America today.  We can't hope to solve the serious problems that face us today if we can't even talk with one another.  Imagining the Clintons back in the White House is as horrifying a thought for some as ever having the Bushes back there is for others.  It's time to look forward and Obama is the one to take us there.
If America wants change on the Republican side they need to move away from McCain. Same old campaign as 4 years ago. I'm not so far right that I think we should let Huckabee in the White house and I have actually considered Obama!  I really think a solid business man is what this country needs that's why my vote is going to Mitt Romney!!!
Why-oh-why are so many of you folks falling for the "Hillary has all this experience" gag ?? Suckers born every minute.  :)
I agree - Hillary keeps telling she has 35 years of experience - doing what?  Sleeping with a governor?  A President (when he wasn't with his girlfriends?).  I just don't see what experience she is referring to other than her senate time - which she made happen by moving to a new state with lots of electoral votes I might add!  I think we have all had enough of the Clinton machine - go back to Arkansas - write books - make speeches and money - and let the rest of us worry about making America wonderful!
Does Jesus only love Huckabee?? What nonsense.

Jesus loves lots of people. But he doesn't like Hillary.
"My sister Jodi Bell waited in line for 10 hours to vote for Huckabee.  I love him, and so does Jesus.  He will win."

Do you REALLY know that Jesus loves Huckabee? How can you make that statement? Did He tell you this?
"I think Obama is bought and paid for by Oprah, and if he wins Welcome to the United States of Africa." (quoted from above)

Wow, you people are still around eh? Too bad the Union won.

Barack is the best hope this nation has. Gone are the days of crotchety old congressmen filibustering for days. The time is here, the time is now, the time for change.
My sister Jodi Bell waited in line for 10 hours to vote for Huckabee.  I love him, and so does Jesus.  He will win.

Wow, what time did the polls open in NH?
it is time that the young people in this counrty run for all offices and all our young people vote for them. The only way to get real change will be by taking out the old and bringing in the young. once that is done then we will have real change and change for the better. And no i am not a young person if your thinking a young person wrote this
Jesus may love Mike Huckabee. But Alan Keyes says he (Jesus) will not vote for Barack Obama or at least he would not when he ran for the senate.
