Obama: I didn't claim to be JFK, MLK

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Andy Merten
If you need any indication the Obama campaign feels confident enough going into tonight’s primary, look only at how he responded to Clinton’s most recent criticism.

Asked by a reporter about the New York senator’s statement last night that he is not comparable to John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr., Obama simply smiled and said, “You know, I didn’t claim to be.”

Clinton made her comments rebuking the notion that Obama’s leadership qualities are similar to those of Kennedy and King’s last night during a speech in Salem, NH.

“President Kennedy was in the Congress for 14 years," Clinton said. "He was a war hero. He was a man of great accomplishments and readiness to be president. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a movement. He was gassed; he was beaten; he was jailed.”

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Andy Merten adds that last night in Concord, N.H., Obama said the following: "Imagine that -- false hopes. Imagine John F. Kennedy looking up at the moon, and saying, 'Darn, that's far.' [laughter, applause]

"We can't do that." Reality check. [cheers] Can't be done.

"Imagine -- imagine Dr. King standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking out at those crowds -- a quarter million people around the reflecting pool -- and saying, "Ya'll go home." The dream has died. It can't be done. It's too hard."

"Lost hopes? You know, this is what this campaign is all about."

NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Michelle Perry ask, Is this Obama comparing himself to the two iconic leaders or is this his rationale and inspiration for his campaign?

I feel sorry for Clinton she is on a train to nowhere!!
Ha ha! Nice one, Barack! Keeping on staying above the fray, and let the movement keep on rollin'.

Obama in '08!
Both Obama and Clinton would be the worst thing that could happen to this country. Neither one has a voting record that shows themselves to be in favor of the middle-class American.
JFK made blunders anyway and he looked so week to the soviet....read>>>

JFK faced his first serious crisis just four months after being inaugurated in January 1961. In 1959, a guerrilla leader named Fidel Castro had toppled the corrupt Batista dictatorship and made himself ruler of Cuba, an island nation just south of Florida. Over the next two years, to Washington's alarm, Castro began to move toward a Communist-style government, while seeking aid from the Soviet Union. Under Eisenhower, the U.S. had formulated a plan to topple the Cuban dictator, using a force of C.I.A.-trained anti-Castro Cubans. JFK allowed the plan to go forward in April of 1961, but tried to reduce U.S. involvement. The result was a fiasco, as the invasion force was slaughtered and the survivors taken prisoner, while American warships watched, helpless, from a few miles out to sea. This Bay of Pigs disaster (named for the ill-fated landing area) was a black eye for the U.S.'s image overseas, and it emboldened the Soviet Union. JFK took "sole responsibility" for what happened, and leaders of both parties rallied around the president. The damage, however, was done.
In the aftermath of the Bay of Pigs, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev saw JFK as a weak, inexperienced figure whom the U.S.S.R. could easily bully.

I'm sure Obama is gonna do better, no need to associate himself with him.

Hillary.. you are just embarassing yourself

We can all see that Obama does have one quality that both JFK and MLK had.. he inspires us to do better.

Hillary is the kind of person who would ask JFK how he was going to pay for the apollo project
Obama is an unproven pup.
He isn't qualified to be President of The United States.
Absolute meltdown...

pass the popcorn...this is great
She's an idiot!!!!!
"...Asked by a reporter about the New York senator’s statement last night that he is not comparable to John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr., Obama simply smiled and said, “You know, I didn’t claim to be.”..."

Good thing too.
Because he couldn't shine either man's shoes!
It was OPRAH who likened him to MLK and every media outlet and Obama supporter has been preaching it ever since. Another slick answer from a slick politician. Does he deny being on stage when "the great Oprah" compared his dream to that of Martin Luther King? I have Chris Matthews and even now Keith Oberlmann make the comparison to the Kennedy's and MLK. It's coming from somewhere isn't it? The preferential treatment Obama has received from the media is too astounding to comprehend. Too bad it's all hype and no substance....
Please not Romney for President!
I was employed by the State of Utah for over 10 years, during those years I witnessed some of the most disturbing lies, theft and prejudice I have ever been subjected to. There is no separation between Church and State in Utah. The State of Utah violates public trust. Many state managers use state resources for church related functions. Also upper management uses state cars for pesonal and private affairs, ultimatley not being honest about the hours they work. We need honesty in our Government not prejucice and lies. CONCERNED CITIZEN
Hillary brought up LBJ and MLK to explain her debate comments from Saturday about talk vs action.

Hillary was focused on how "I takes a President to get it done."

Hillary now says "Obama is no MLK"

She is arguing with herself.

Obama is right, he never said he was MLK
Hillary, you obviously are not paying attention.  If you can't see that what Obama has going right now is a movement, then I'm afraid of what else you would miss if you were president.
Next thing you know.....
Obama will talk about how he tried to play bass guitar and Hillary will make him out to be one of the Beatles.

Hillary is really getting desperate.....
John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr. leadership qualities. What a joke?
The differnece between Obama and JFK and MLK is Obama is at his best when reading from a script.  Off the cuff he isn't quite as inspiring or gifted.  Mr. Obama has great speech writers.  The more I see his campaign rallies the more it reminds me of the closed campaign style of Bush.  Of course only in style, certainly not substance.  In the next few weeks Obama will be tied closer and tighter to the script and his sincerity and authenticity will begin to strip away.  I know Obama has the intelligence to be President, what I'm concerned about is his experience.
Bill Clinton was a governor and became President, George W was and is an idiot and became President, Hillary is panicing because all that money has gotten her nowhere. She will just be another politician making promises she won't be able to deliver. Yes, we need change, but it doesn't happen over night. The process is long and filled with pitfalls. The next President will have to convince professional politicians that the change will benefit everyone, not just the people they represent in their individual states.
Clinton on the otherhand sees herself as what? A weepy poor thing just trying to make sure we don't go backwards? You got to give her (and Bill) credit though. The two of them make Rove seem like a saint.
When Hillary is under stree she either cries or starts bat mouthing other candidates

She's REALLY HURTING herself with all her negativity

The 'politics of personal destruction' ....
I love this man! :)
That's right. He didn't. I posted a relevant comment at another place JUST before I saw this. If and when it appears I will copy it to these comments. The upshot: A typical Clinton distortion in the attempt to belittle Obama. Each time she now opens her mouth to hold forth on Obama the following describes the outcome: A's opinion of B is more a reflection on A than on B. Her performance is now bordering on pathetic.
looking for something that will work. campaign strategy is gone. she can only go negative. not because she necessarily want to. she has to. that will be dangerous, but she is out of options.
Though Obama didn't "claim" to be either JFK or MLK, just bringing up their names invites comparisons. Being the smart person he is, I'm sure he is aware of this and used both of those names to reflect positively on himself and his "message" (one which is hardly new). Being the smart person she is, Clinton's response is quite appropriate.
I thought this comment by Clinton was interesting because the most common comparison I have heard has been RFK, not JFK.

Interestingly, an older co-worker this morning told me the energy in the nation surrounding Obama reminds him of the energy felt for Reagan.
It is a shame to watch her get so desperate that she will say and/or do anything. During the debate Saturday she cut Edwards and Obama off about talking from their heart and told them to get back to reality. Then on Monday she started saying that she talking from her heart. Unfortunately, acting is not what is needed now - it is entirely too late for her. Timing was just not on her side.
Our least experienced president was Abraham Lincoln.  He has served only one term in the House of Representatives.  And that several years before he was elected president.

Our most experienced were Herbert Hoover and James Buchanan.  Buchanan has been Secretary of State, Senator, Representative, Ambassador to England and advisor to 4 presidents: Jackson, Van Buren, Polk and Pierce.  Hoover’s experience with getting relief to the European people after World War I and as Commerce Secretary should have made him the perfect choice to lead this nation during the Great Depression.

These two, with all of their valuable experience, left the United States with the two biggest crisis in our history, the Civil War and the Great Depression.  It took less experienced leaders to lead the United States out of these holes.  Experience has value, but pales beside the need for leadership.
I have been a Clinton supporter for a very long time and even felt moved by Senator Clinton's speeches last night.  However, after reading comments made by Senator Clinton and President clinton regarding Barack Obama's qualifications, I am no longer a Clinton fan.  If Barrack does not get the Democratic nomination, I will vote Republican.  That says a lot from a lifelong Democrat!
THE CLINTONS ARE DESPERATE. WATCH HOW THE DIRT STARTS TO FLY AS HER POLL NUMBERS SINK.
Wow.
As usual the Clinton campaign takes Obama statements out of context and then tries to smear him with their interpretations.  When will their crap come to an end?  Who knows, maybe tonight!
Obama '08
I have a question for Obama:

Q. Will you commit to CHANGE the political process in this country so that a few minority states together with the media are no longer able to hijack our democracy?

A. No.
Obama has what it takes to Lead, represent and be President.

Hillary is a complete and desperate loser. She will do anything to win and can not be trusted.
The well-oiled Clinton political machine, the political machine of an era that Americans want to move past, is working full time distorting Obama's statements, etc.  Obama did not claim to be another Kennedy, he simply pointed out how Kennedy's ability to inspire people with his words made a difference in this country.  They did, and Obama's are.  This is a sad finale to what was a powerful political family.
I think this is the era in the United States history to look beyond skin color and make decision base upon capability and personality. For too long this Country has been its own enemy by division. Obama is not a black or white candidate.....He is an American, a Uniter for all and an International person who has this country at heart.
Sad!
If he's not JFK or MLK, then who?

Let's see, a woman fainted and he immediately took charge and gave her his personal bottle of water ...

Is he the one who is to come, or should we look for another? If I send him a handkerchief, will he bless it and send it back? If I place my hand on the TV, will I be cured of my hypoglycemia?

Hey, I'm practical. If he starts multiplying loaves and fishes, I'll join up. I'm not proud.
According to Clinton's criteria listed here, the only person ready to be President then is...

John McCain.

She really needs to start thinking before talking, or she might become known as a Lieberman Democrat.
Hillary is not Madame Curie, Maggie Thatcher, or Mother Teresa. Hillary Clinton won a Senate seat based on her last name in a state that loves to elect celebrities to high office.

See? Others can play that game too.
HATERADE? Clinton you suck!
The founding fathers didn't have all that much experience either, but they brought about the most tremendous change.

Obama 08'  Pefect Love casteth out all fears.
But you know Hillary, someday Obama's leadership skills may be seen as comparable to King and Kennedy. You need not worry that the same will be said about yours. The bahavior of you and your husband has been shameful these last few days. Prove that you will not do anything to win by losing with dignity and decency.

Goodbye, Mitt. Goodbye, Rudy. Goodbye, Hillary. OK, now let's have an election process worthy of this
nation's democratic principles, and not dictated by Beltway and Madison Avenue slime.
There's a saying that goes, "A drowning man (Hillary) would clutch to a straw".

Go Obama.
JFK's got NOTHIN' on Obama!  JFK is just the democratic lush-child of nostalgia.  JFK has nothing on MLK either.  I think Obama is more akin to the heights of MLK and Lincoln.
Obama AND Oprah: "where's the beef?"
THIS ONE IS OVER MIT-if not for Mormon.
ARIZONA cracking down on EMPLOYERS-not JOHN McCAIN. . .
Once again, Hillary demonstrates that she is just another stooge for The Establishment... that's why she made a stupid comment about Obama being like JFK and MLK. Did Obama say he was like them? No he didn't so Hillary just needs to shut the hell up and move out of the way.

And Vickie... if you vote Republican then you are a traitor who deserves to be excommunicated permanently from the Democratic Party. Voting for the 'Dark Side' no matter who ends up being the Dem nominee will not do this nation any good whatsoever.

Stick with the party for God's sake...
Cyrus E. Strother, Charlotte, NC,

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!  I sick to death of people labeling Senator Obama.  He is an American Christian male running for President.  If they want to label him, label him BI-Racial which is what he truly is.  He was raised by his mother and her parents.  He got his values from them.  I don't get our Country, especially in this campaign.  I have learned a whole lot about some of us who want to harp of the things that divide us instead of those things that we have in common.

I'm praying that the Lord sees fit for Senator Obama to win this New Hampshire primary and then the nomination and then the Presidency.  It's not about black folks or white folks or whatever group you are from, its about OUR COUNTRY, PEOPLE!

We need someone who can restore our standing in the World.  Don't forget we have Americans LIVING in other Countries.  They MUST be just as protected as we are in the United States.  I hate using phrases, but we need to turn the page.
Dear Senator Clinton,

At some point, most likely mid-way through the run up to the Feb. Super Tuesday primary elections, you will come to the realization that the 2008 Democratic Party Presidential nomination has escaped you.

At that moment you will have two choices, each will speak volumes about your character and commitment to electing a Democrat as the nation’s 44th President.

You could increase the attacks on Senator Obama’s character and record, or you could celebrate the tremendous voter turnout we are witnessing.  You could remind the nation that Democrats, Independents, and truth be told Republicans are coming to the polls as a direct result of the Bush Administrations’ failed policies.  The turnout reflects voter disapproval with 8 years of Karl Rove’s “divide and conquer” strategy. You could use the remaining time in the center ring to encourage voters to keep voting in large numbers further demonstrating their commitment to “participatory democracy”.

In short, I suggest you perform some “national service”, the results may surprise you. Your stature within the Democratic Party will grow, your national reputation will be re-deemed.
