Obama: I didn't claim to be JFK, MLK

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Andy Merten
If you need any indication the Obama campaign feels confident enough going into tonight’s primary, look only at how he responded to Clinton’s most recent criticism.

Asked by a reporter about the New York senator’s statement last night that he is not comparable to John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr., Obama simply smiled and said, “You know, I didn’t claim to be.”

Clinton made her comments rebuking the notion that Obama’s leadership qualities are similar to those of Kennedy and King’s last night during a speech in Salem, NH.

“President Kennedy was in the Congress for 14 years," Clinton said. "He was a war hero. He was a man of great accomplishments and readiness to be president. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led a movement. He was gassed; he was beaten; he was jailed.”

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Andy Merten adds that last night in Concord, N.H., Obama said the following: "Imagine that -- false hopes. Imagine John F. Kennedy looking up at the moon, and saying, 'Darn, that's far.' [laughter, applause]

"We can't do that." Reality check. [cheers] Can't be done.

"Imagine -- imagine Dr. King standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking out at those crowds -- a quarter million people around the reflecting pool -- and saying, "Ya'll go home." The dream has died. It can't be done. It's too hard."

"Lost hopes? You know, this is what this campaign is all about."

NBC's Domenico Montanaro and Michelle Perry ask, Is this Obama comparing himself to the two iconic leaders or is this his rationale and inspiration for his campaign?

Vickie do not be  dope. You are exactly what the GOP is hoping for. That the bickering will go on between our top candidates, the party will be divided and as they say  divided we fall.
5 kids' worth of FLIP FLOPPING eh Mit.

IT's Mit when dust settles, folks.

-I'm glad it's not old people-DUPED BY empty black suit-and dumb McCain.
As a Bi-Coastal Resident one see things from Both Sides. Hillary Dillary Dock is how I've always thought of Mrs. Clinton, Hillary for her name, Dillary, for waiting to decide, sort of like Swishy; and Dock, Stuck in the same Spot, like the Dock where the Queen Mary II Docks not in New York but in Brooklyn.
Never quite getting to the point, which now most like will be her downfall.

Obama could be the new America everyone has been waiting for. Why would anyone compare dead people to Live people. There has been many changes since Kenndy and King were alive.Time for a New American Pride.
"I'm melting!  I'm melting!" -Hillary Clinton
IT'S YOU HILLARY-as much as JACK OFF WITH AIRFORCE 1 HUBBY.
The Clintons resort to the same sort of distortions and desperate attacks that their Republican foes did years ago, and Obama responds with class and grace.  You want proof that he can withstand the GOP attack machine?  Here it is.
From Huff Post:

'...The road may get harder immediately after New Hampshire. The all-important Culinary Workers union in Nevada, the next state to vote on Jan. 19, is considering backing Sen. Obama a day after a New Hampshire win, say some high-ranking Democrats. The support of the state's largest union by far would virtually hand him a victory in the labor-dominated caucuses there, Democrats say. And the Clinton campaign is considering effectively ceding South Carolina, which votes a week later. Her once-strong support in the state's large black population eroded and Sen. Obama opened a big lead in polls after Iowa's caucus results energized many blacks with the prospect that a man of their race stands a realistic chance of being nominated....'

La guerre est fini

Why go out like a louse ?
You've lost
Why get ugly about things ?

Sorry, the Presidency was never you right
We didn't owe you anything....

At least, this is making it VERY UNLIKELY that Hillary will be on the ticket !!

OBAMA:
DO NOT OFFER HILLARY THE VP SLOT !!
She is POISON

I'm a greencardholder so I can't vote but I feel really proud to be living in America where people are looking past skin color god bless the USA.
Hillary sure mentioned a lot of qualities and experience she doesn't have either.
Mrs. Clinton has failed to come to grips with herself, that she has had a long ride on her husband's coat tail and that most people will only be remembered for 2 things in this life as history has showed us, and that is :the problems they solved or the problems they create.. Which will Mrs. Clinton be remembered FOR????
Congratulations to Obama on always keeping a positive frame of mind, not lowering himself to the verbal "hits" Ms. Clinton typically goes to.  Oh, and why does being Bill's wife qualify as experience?
I personally do not like obama's wife.  She is a power hungery ....  Maybe in four years we will have a repeat.
No, Barack Obama is not MLK. King could never have been the democratic presidential nominee back then. Thanks to MLK and people like Hillary Clinton and her generation, Barack Obama could possibly be our next President of the United States.

JFK wrote Profiles in Courage. That book was our bible when we were young.  I don't see much courage anymore in politics. I see it in Barack Obama.

Please Senator Clinton, don't go down that road. You're better than that. You fought for too much to sink to that level.

You and people like you made this all possible.
Obama and Edwards would make a great team for the next presidency.  They have the charisma and forsight to step in the oval office and begin making
the day to day decisions.  America and the world will be served well from this change.  If  they are not elected as nominees, I  will not vote for Clinton, and I may vote for a reliable republican!

CHANGE- That seems to be the word of choice,If Obama can start that chain rolling with the ordinary people that for years have not cared enough to get in the fight- Just imagine what he can accomplish in D.C. I for one have become excited for the first time ever about getting involved. Thats doing something considering I have been eligible to vote for 23 years.
Actually, two things it is others who are making the comparisons. And yes there have been just as many comparing him to JFK. Like the way he adjusted his socks when he sat down, Barack did the same thing.

But JFK's speech writer Ted Sorenson not only endorsed Obama but said he reminded him of him a lot. In a book Obama said that his senator's desk did "once belong to RFK." Hillary and the Clintonista's read 'em and weep.

Heloise
Actually, she originally brought up MLK in a disparaging way, saying it was LBJ who was responsible for civil rights, not MLK.
If Obama is un-electable, why does he keep winning elections. If Hillary has so much experience, why didn't she learn to lose with grace. I want Health Care, stable gas prices, and a real education system in this Country, should we sacrafice all that to make Hillary "feel" better about her bruised ego.
Obama is an unproven pup. He isn't qualified to be President of The United States.

But, you feel it coming, don't you?
i am so suprised at those of you who keep saying the republicans want obama to win. hillary is what they wanted. that was their desire, want and statement before campaigning began. obama presents a problem that they never figured on. how to run against someone that wants to unite and heal the country. they would have the same problem hillary is having. the only success they can hope for to beat the dnc is to have t fracture so the republicans can win the white house.

what is so amazing is that so many are falling into the trap of dividing you all so you will not vote and let them win. it is amazing how easy some of you are to be led over the cliff.
That's right barack, I knew jack kennedy and you are no jack kennedy.
First: let us examine where we have been.  Each and every American has been psychically whiplashed for eight years by the fear-infused, simplistic, and antagonistic politics of the latter half of the Bush dynasty. Who would have thought that a candidate such as Obama would rise up, one to whom Americans can look for turning back the toxic tide of negativity in domestic and global politics? I am so thankful we have have one articulate candidate, able to articulate a vision of a different kind of future...with positive leadership.  I am thankful. Clinton has made her mark on politics already...but she is resorting to spiteful strategizing...even if she was the only candidate, I would be feeling less enthusiastic about her than I had at the outset of the primaries. Further, what Barack Obama represents for our country could be one of the most incontrovertibly powerful, uniting, and uplifting eras in the history of American politics -- since the founders declared the people as the sovereign body, rejecting the notion that only the royal authority could be "sovereign". We stand on the brink of amazing possibilities. I am thankful.
Haven't we suffered enough already with inexperience in the white house? what qualifications does Obama have for this all important job? Let's give him another 4-8 years to mature first and actually DO something.

If it’s McCain vs Obama I’ll cross party lines and vote for McCain..
What are they seeing on Barack, that I am not seeing? I think these people are voting for him because Oprah tell them so. Yes, he has good speeches, but this is because he has good writers. Take away the teleprompt, and the notes, Barack would not know what to say. Ask him questions that he was never asked before, he would not know what to say. Those debates, my gosh, it's so obvious that he memorized his answers.
As a 34yo Black Male, primarily raised in the White establishment, I would be highly changed of a Obama nomination.  My general suspicions and outright contempt for those who lead us would be in major jeopardy.  Change towards a Black President isn't the positive be-all, but rather the adoption of what our fathers intended.  I don't know if our country's fathers "really" intended for Blacks to "ever" rule this great country.  I think that their thoughts were left to interpretation as the constitution.  I'm a proud American Soldier, Citizen and Neighbor.  I can't wait to see and touch real change in our country.  I can't wait to be a part of something that has presumably never really been mine to share amongst everyone else who matters...
funny, Obama is running the campaign Bill said the next president needs to run way before Hillary announced she wanted to run. which is of hope and bringing people together
It's so ironic that Hillary has actually been doing the things Obama is only promising to do: working across the aisle to build consensus and get things done.

Never let facts get in the way of your illusions!
JFK and MLK: Mostly GAS BAGS,TOO.
latest national poll-obama 33%, hillary 33% and john edwards 20%.
WHAT STATE GOVERMENT IS EMPLOYING YOU NOW???

-CONCERNED CITIZEN-
on obama, the funny thing is thus: if Obama starts to act like Hillary, edwards wins cause ppl would shift to the person less caustic. However, since has not employed that tactic he MIGHT win the nomination. I think Obama has what it takes; the problem is he isn't experienced on that level.

Obama seems the more complete of the candidates. other than that, i'd vote for John Edwards. He has taken to the high road. I think Edwards as his running mate would make the difference. hillary as a running mate would be a CATASTROPHE!!!!!
Michael,

Obama has actually written most of his best speeches himself.  He has plenty of the experience that should matter.  Exerience fight for those with little.  Community organizer, civil rights attorney, constitutional law professor, state senator, us senator.  He has worked his way up from the botton on his own merits.  More than enought to impress me.

I want to know, will Hillary and Barak be on the offensive against terroristm, or will they back down like others?  Enough semantics, let's get serious.
I know we have a national crisis in our hands (economic, war, national security etc) and we all want change but please even thinking that Obama is the right person to do the job is a crazy idea. He appeals to the youth, ok? is that a good reason to make him president. He probably did'nt compare himself to JFK & MLK but he is a slick talker.
Hillary wears pants then skirts. She stands strong, then tears up with emotion. And she keeps saying 'I will do'. It's alway 'I', 'I'. Thats just pure weakness and selfeshness. She want do anything for the people. We are so confused with her. We need a president that we can understand and relate to.
WOMEN think that Oprah really emphasizes.
It's amazing that so many of you are against Obama, for what reason? No experience? Our president had 4 years of experience and you re-elected him. I am glad that some of us can come together across lines and support someone that has a vision for this torn, separated, hate filled country. Obama does have one definite thing in common with Dr. MLK, he has a vision of America rising up TOGETHER.
Obama is to far to the right.  Is stand on Illegal immigration could hurt the United States.  And his connection to Islam and Kenya could prove to be a desaster for our Country.  I keep listening for someone to come up with a realistic plan to get our country back on track
Hillary has over $110 million in contributions, the elections have hardly gotten started, and she claims to be running out of money??

Just WHERE did it all go?  Is there an audit trail?  Reminds me of how she raised over $100 million in her latest senate race, even though she was considered a shoo-in, then claimed to have spent almost all of it!?!  Where did all of those funds go???  (Will anyone ever try to track down where it all went???)

If Hillary can burn mountains of money so fast, with so little to show for it, do we really want her to have access to the US Treasury?
I would like to know one person who was elected President of the USA yet came into the office with experience as a President of the USA?????
It's all about knowing how to motivate people, surrounding yourself with a quality staff, genuinely caring about the American People, and being a Man of your Word, not only in the USA but Internationally.

Obama is our Man!!!!
Lincoln felt blacks were inferior-I hope this isn't BARAK HUSSEIN OBAMA.
"HOPE MAKETH A FINE BREAKFAST, BUT A POOR SUPPER".
He is an idealist, he is a good talker, smart, appears to young people, has been a senator for how many years?  Are those the qualities we want in the future president of this country?

The complete hypocriscy of some on this page is really quite amusing.  You bash Hillary for negative campaigning and then follow up that talk with only negative hurtful things about her.  My mom always used to say two wrongs don't make a right.  If you are going to crucify her for negative remarks maybe you should keep yours to yourself.

Bill Johnson from Montana, could you clarify how the Civil War was one of the biggest crisis in our country.  It was mainly brought about to end slavery, it was to help CHANGE our country.  All you lovely Obama supporters are so big on change, so how could ending slavery be one of the biggest crisis in our country?? Curious?

Ron from Texas, JFK was far more qualified and a far better president then Obama could ever hope to be and for him to even attempt to draw comparision between JFK and himself is as big a joke as you all thinking he will be elected president.  Talking pretty with words that were written for you by other people is a lot easier than running a nation.

Oh and Lynn from Millington, if you are going to support a candidate you should actually learn about them first, Obama is an American Muslim, not an American Christian.
Osama Obama: you are a damn liar and a fool!  You and you puta mala wife will never live in the White House.  Just what we need: jungle fever in the White House.
Those who somehow think Hillary is criticizing Obama will be in a real tizzy when the Republican dirty tricks machine gets revved up. Rap music and dog fights in the Rose garden anyone?
