First four-way split in 20 years

Posted: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 10:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Andy Merten and Domenico Montanaro
This is the first four-way split in Iowa and New Hampshire in the Republican and Democratic races in 20 years. The last time this happened was 1988 when Bush (NH), Dole (IA), Dukakis (NH) and Gephardt (IA) split the early contests.

YEAR  GOP-NH             IA         DEM-NH           IA
1976              Ford          Ford               Carter      Carter (2nd to uncommitted)
1980              Reagan     Bush              Carter      Carter
1984              Reagan     NA                  Hart         Mondale
1988              Bush          Dole               Dukakis  Gephardt
1992              Bush          NA                  Tsongas Harkin
1996              Buchanan Dole                Clinton    NA
2000              McCain     GWB              Gore        Gore
2004              GWB         NA                  Kerry       Kerry
2008              McCain     Huckabee      Clinton    Obama

EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this post indicated this was the first time this had ever happened. We went back and checked the numbers; chalk it up to the late-night haze of election returns and the barrage of numbers. We regre the error.

As a die-hard Obama supporter, I am of course slightly disappointed.   Damn you Rasmussen for building up my hopes and crushing them under your Zogby boots!  Ehm anyways.

Hillary Clinton deserves congratulations.  Remember, this is coming from someone that really isn't her biggest fan at all.  But still. That was incredible and even I was shocked!  What I'm really going to be waiting to hear about is what the turnout was.  This is an amazing season!
Mitt Romney you Have Broken Us, as always more flip flopping

More flip Flopping from Mitt Romney, do you really want a scumbag like this.

Governor Romney…imposed a slew of fee hikes and tax 'loophole' closures….The largest of these was $259 million worth of fee hikes in FY 2004, the bulk of which came from higher Registry of Deeds fees.  Smaller fee hikes, including higher charges for boaters and golfers, we imposed in FY 2003 and FY 2005.  Romney also sought $128 million worth of so-called tax loophole closures for FY 2004; $70 million for FY 2005; and $170 million for FY 2006, which were later reduced to $85 million due to backlash from business leaders."
- Club for Growth's White Paper on Mitt Romney

"Romney continues to oppose the flat tax with harsh language, calling the tax 'unfair.'"
- Club for Growth's White Paper on Mitt Romney

The Governor would also seek to raise $128 million in revenue by closing corporate tax loopholes (Rick Klein, “Massachusetts Governor’s Proposed Budget Includes Layoffs, New Fees”, Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, 2/27/2003)

Despite the governor's pledge of no new taxes, his proposal does increase some taxes and fees: The administration says it can collect an additional $70 million by "closing loopholes" in corporate and sales tax rules (Scott Greenberger, “Massachusetts Governor Sets $22.98 Billion Budget Blueprint”, Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, 1/29/2004)

“…business groups objected so strongly to a proposed $170 million tax increase that Romney snuffed the idea and proposed $85 million instead.” (Alexander Bolton, “Romney’s Tax Record Gets A Closer Look,”  The Hill, 3/27/2007)

Governor Romney even raised taxes on some New Hampshire residents who worked in Massachusetts, taxing their income and their pensions.

Dukakis won Iowa back in 1988? Think back to John Chancellor that night. "Third place so far from home is no disgrace." Think back to the Duke's speech that night. "Tonight my friends we won the bronze."
So far no clear cut winner has emerged for either the DEMs or the REPs. The race continues.
It seems it is a two man race I hope my candidate Mike Huckabee will advance I belive he is right for the country, I also belive that the Predident of United States should be a christian, I had a problem with mitt romney winning being that he is in a cult, and as a Born Again Christian I will be backing Mike Huckabee.

Hey republicans one thing is clear THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE SO LONG STATUS QUO
I would love to see two old-time real conventions not coronations ie both the Republican and Democratic conventions become deadlocked, with ballot after ballot taken without a winner and all the horse trading that goes along with it! Say Edwards as king (or queen)maker on one side and Thompson on the other. Now that would be fun!
When the democrats and republicans in Michigan were working together in a Bi-Partisan effort to make more the state’s primary more significant, this is the scenario they were hoping for. Michigan now becomes and more important state at least for the Republicans. The Democrats, especially Edwards’ and Obama’s surrogates screwed up the process and betrayed the citizens of Michigan. Of course the Democratic Party takes the state for granted and does not care about the problems of the people that live here, even though the UAW  and the blue collar worker in Michigan has done more than anyone else to get Democrats elected.

I am glad the Republicans, at least Romney and McCain will be coming to the state to campaign; I hope the other Republican candidates will as well.

I hope the Democrats in Michigan will vote on Tuesday February 15th in force, and show there party that Michigan is a vital and important state.

I hope the new media will give as much attention to Michigan as they have to Iowa and New Hampshire, or maybe like the Democrats, they don’t care about Michigan either.

(Note to Michigan Democrats: If you support Edwards or Obama, there names will not appear on the ballot. To cast you vote for Edwards or Obama you should select UNCOMMITTED.)
SKM- I've seen reports that turnout on the Democratic side was around 280,000, in line with the prediction of the NH Secretary of State
Good.  Let's hope it lasts long enough to give us ALL a chance to vote for the candidates we WANT, and not just make do with Iowa and New Hampshire's leftovers.
Hey, Gov. Mitt Romney got Massachusetts out of a recession after September 11th Devastated our Jobs Market and Economy Here. Mitt Romney also had the Guts to get rid of A corrupt UMASS President, and an incompetent Head of the Mass Turnpike authority to finally expose the corruption of the Big Dig Highway Project. He did this even with Strong Democrat opposition in the Legislature. I know. I was here!

Sen. McCain is the Flip Flopper on Immigration and Border Control!

Romney is the ONLY Candidate for U.S. President with the Executive Know-How AND Moral Strength to Do what's Right for America as opposed to what's LEFT for America!
Hate to tell you, but your history is wrong.  In 1988, Gephardt and Dole won Iowa, while Dukakis and Bush won New Hampshire.
Look at that 92 list.  Tsongas and Harkin?  I'm really too young to remember that campaign, but I'm sure the pundits were sputtering just as much as they are now.
So we did make history after all! :)

Obama '08
Dukakis didn't win Iowa in 88. Gephardt did.  You're just plain wrong.
Gephardt won IA in 88 no?
Well said, S.K.M.

As for the four-way split, I suppose I'll counter my own disappointment with the knowledge that this could turn out to be a great campaign season for us junkies (though it'd be better if the right candidates win).
Gephardt won Iowa in 1988.
Pretty big last minute clinton swing.

Wonder if there was some ballot stuffing.

Mike
Yep, Gephardt won Iowa in 1988, Paul was a close second,  Dukakis was third.
Yep, in 1988, Gephardt won Iowa, Paul Simon came in second and Dukakis in third.
Okay, don't anyone get all upset at me now, but it would be a really interesting statistic if at the end of this election cycle, the new President is one who isn't one of the IA or NH winners.  Can we say Romney or Rudy?
Who or what is NA?
Hillary didn't win last night, America won, The process goes on.
Obama and Edwards didn't lose last night, political pundits and the media lost.
Go America, democracy in action is our way.
I hope Michigan dems vote in force, send a message to the party bosses, we want all our votes to count!
I wish that the media would stop treating the primaries as though they were winner-take-all contests. It's the delegate count that counts, not the "winner." I acknowledge that who the "winner" is may influence voting in other states. (Floridians are certainly hoping their vote will matter in that way.) But this is not the electoral college.
As a Republican, its great to see Clinton Win! Hukabee can easily beat Clinton in the general election and so I thank the NH Democrats!!
1) Hillary Clinton says she is ready to lead the most powerful nation on earth, and is the candidate that can get to job done.

Question 1: How will she stand up to her opposition in Congress and the enemies of the State if she cannot handle the pressure before the job even begins?

Question 2: Can a President or any adult for that matter cry?  (Yes, an adult and even President can cry.)

Question 3:  Was it a great political move?  (Of course, it was.  She rallied thousands of women, some of whom thought that she was picked on.  This is the person that is vying for the most powerful political office in the world.  Are you kidding me?  Coming to her defense for this was reckless, immature, and patently selfish on anyone's part who went and gave her a tally based on it; regardless of what your age is.)

2) Hillary Clinton touts her experience, and her ability to get the job done.

Question: What do you mean, Senator, when you say during a victory speech "I have found my voice"?  (Where was your voice, Mrs. Clinton?  I thought you said you were the one who was going to be ready on day one?)

The only positive thing that could come from the NH primary is that it will sharpen Senators Obama and Edwards, or any other candidate whose last name is not Thompson, Giuliani, or McCain.

John McCain does not represent the voices of veterans, nor the perspectives.  He represents another reckless fossil in (lack of) leadership that is not only out of touch with the 21st Century, but the military that protects the United States in the current millennium.  The fact is that there are many members of the military who know that Operation Iraqi Freedom is not propelling the U.S. or its allies forward in the Global War on Terror, there are intelligent and smart members of the military community who are not as irresponsible as this and have better judgment of the real threats of the world (including Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden; still at large), and there are veterans who have many stories to tell that do not drape allegiance over Senator McCain, President Bush, Senator Liebermann, or any of these stubborn and selfish men whose own sense of self-importance entitles them to speak on the behalf of every patriot in this great country.
