Edwards presses on in SC

Posted: Wednesday, January 09, 2008 3:47 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller
CLEMSON, S.C. -- It was business as usual in the Edwards camp following the former North Carolina senator's third-place finish in New Hampshire. At his first event of the day, an outdoor rally at sunny Clemson University, Edwards came armed with the same staff and the same stump speech.

The only changes came toward the end of his speech. First, Edwards emphasized his Southern upbringing.

"We have to make certain that every primary voter in South Carolina knows that I was born here," he said. "I know what your lives are like. I do not have to read this in a book. I know it first-hand. I grew up in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, in mill towns, in mill villages."

Then, after expounding further on his son-of-a-mill-worker biography, Edwards pivoted to counter the pessimism directed at his campaign following losses in the first two primary states.

"Listen, no matter what the media says, so far there have been two contests," he said. "Two states -- Iowa, where I finished second, and New Hampshire, where I finished third. There are 48 states left to go, and your voice here in South Carolina is gonna be heard."

Taking questions from reporters after the rally, Edwards said he isn't worried about the momentum his rivals gained from their wins.

"I've said it all along, I'm in this for the long haul," he said. "And I'm very optimistic about what's gonna happen. I mean, I'm running against two candidates who have a $100 million each, so I'm very much the underdog. But if you look at what happened in Iowa, I finished between those two $100 million candidates. We were competitive in New Hampshire, and now we come to South Carolina, a place that I won in 2004 and a place that I know very well."

Edwards is the only Democratic candidate who flew directly from New Hampshire to South Carolina. Republicans Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee are also in the Palmetto State today.

A US PRESIDENT NAME HUSSEIN BARACK OBAMA. THAT'S FOOLISH AND NONSENSE!!!!!!

Mrs Clinton is obviously the most qualified candidate in both parties.I'm  an American  I stay up late to watch the debates. So far she is the only candidate that demonstrated the qualites and experience that US needs during these turbulent times.

Obama may be brilliant , could make good C and C for the Future but ceratinly not ready for the 2008 White House.U S politics isn't about looking nice and talking sweet; it's about tough choices and decisions.Americans have to separate enthusiasm founded on wishes and dreams from pedigree, know-how, and a demonstrated capacity to deliver.

I like Edwards, but he's just helping Hillary at this point.
I can't believe edwards is still on the radar..he is an ambulance chasing millionaire lawyer robin hood populist with our money...he couldn't even deliver his home state to kerry in 2004...sheeesh
Edwards is rarely mentioned in the news because he's like a broken record or too many reruns I Love Lucy. You know he's always there in the background, spouting his negatives about how he's gonna kick all the special interests out of Washington and the evils of the status quo, over and over and over again. His negatives have become status quo for him. And that constant smug look he carries on his face reminds me too much of that cocky smirk of our idiot-in-chief.
Joe - are you kidding?  I could care less what the new President's name is.  What a silly reason not to vote for him!  He's an American and that's all I care about.  I will vote for the person I feel will help the middle class in this country best.  We are dying out here and no one in Congress seems to notice or care.  By the way, did anyone notice they just gave themselves a raise???  (Maybe they are the only ones in America who think they are doing a good job.  And that includes Republicans and Democrats!)  Anway, you say Mrs. Clinton is "obviously" the most qualified candidate in Both parties.  How do you come up with that?  Does being First Lady qualify you to be President?  That's like saying the wife or husband of any CEO is able to run the company if he/she steps down.  It's ludicrous!  Yes, she's a Senator, but for a short time only.  I don't think she should claim experience - it drives me crazy.   Besides, I don't even care if they have a whole lot of experience - I just want them to want to do the RIGHT thing and protect Americans as well as the freedoms the Constitution gives us. I don't think Obama is about looking nice and talking sweet - you obviously haven't heard him speak about tough choices and decisions.  And what about Edwards?  He has a lot of experience and a lot of good things to think about also.  I don't think you should write anyone off just yet, and I also don't think there's anything wrong with wishes and dreams - it's what this country was founded on.  It's making them come true that counts.  By the way, I wish the media would get off talking about polls, and who cried, etc. and start talking about the issues.  The media is really letting the American public down.
Edwards is a good guy.

But his $400 haircut and lack of campaign money can't compete and he is dilluting the anti-HIllary vote that we so desperately need.

Why do you think John Kerry is endorsing Obama?  B/c he knows Edwards doesn't have a chance.

Edwards doesn't have anything to show for his six years in the Senate except:

- vote for Patriot Act (he helped draft)
- vote for Iraq War
- vote for No Child Left Behind
It is interesting to see all the Obama fans asking Edwards to drop out to enhance their candidates chances. we have had three states vote and they want a far gone conclusion. Seems you don't want the rest of the country to speak. I am all for all the candidates to stay in as long as possible, the only spoiler is less candidates to pick from.
If Obama really wants this he will have to fight for it like every other candidate, we are not letting the media lovefest pick our candidates this year. A convention fight in both parties would be godsend.
Giving more americans more choices is Democracy in action, if you can't stand the heat then you better get out now, it is going to get hotter in here.
Instant gratification is not a political choice this year!!!!!!!!!
It is time, my friends, to take a new turn in this election.....we need to get down to the meat and potatoes , the nuts and bolts of the issues.   We need to stop with the vague statements and chic slogans and tell the people the how and why of each of the issues in your proposal.....remember that there are two republicans who have now started using the "c' word- Change- in their daily speeches,....so eventually we're going to get called on it; lets hear more substance and examples from obama and stop with the hot air and vague statements because he's not helping his cause any!!....the only candidate who has been giving us the proper hows and why's and wherefores all along has been edwards;  hillary has been giving us good info when she gets pressed on it but not UNTIL  she gets pressed on it,  Obama has been giving us nothing,  no explanation of how to finance any of his issues no details of his health care plan no nothing! i'm still wondering how his health care plan fits into my situation-  edwards has a plan for totally free health care to me that's big that's huge.....Go Edwards and hang in there a while longer your message is starting to get through!!!
John Edwards has stood up to greedy corporations before in court, he can do it again.  Hilary didn't even stand up to her husband when she caught him cheating.  I have no respect for her.  I don' think any other world leaders will either.  every time I look at her all I can think of is " your husband got a hummer under the table and you let him away with it you idiot"!  How can you expect a world leader to have respect for someone like that or to fear their actions or reprisals?
The corporate media wants John Edwards out of the way. He has raised the issues that irks the corporate world. Corporations feel insecure with him in the race. Also John Edwards has been the only candidate that have call as it is in regards to Iraq - We are an occupying force in a sovereign country.
I am a Republican.  I am a Republican, because of my core religious beliefs, yet, I am an American.  I value our freedom to have a choice as to what our religious beliefs and political beliefs are.  I see the economic and enviromental issues and I am just as concerned about these issues as I am our moral decline as a country.  I realize that I am placing this message on a site where the majority of you do not see the social changes as  moral decline, and at present do not wish to argue about this aspect.  What I am trying to say, is that right now, out of all the candidates both republican or democrat the only one that I want to cast my vote for is John Edwards.  I feel that he is the only candidate that has been true to his word.  The only candidate that is talking about the real issues of our country.  The only candidate without an ulterior motive.
I can not believe that anyone would vote for Hiliary Clinton.  If she is elected to office our country will have had the same top leadership for at least 28 years.  Under Ronald Regan, George Bush was VP for 8 yrs then was President for 4.  Then Bill Clinton was President for 8years.  Then George Bush JR was President for 8 Years.  Do we really want another Clinton for 4 more years?  Where is the serious change we need in that equation?
As for Obama, his full name is Barak Hassain Obama.  Where did his political clout come from?  Who is he?  He will not salute our flag, and yet there are people seriously considering him as our president.  Why?  Because he is a good speaker?  Because they are sheep and are following the crowd?  Because they want to be politically correct?  I don't know the answers to these questions and I don't think that he has America's best interest at heart.
If the democrates choose either of these candidates for their nomination,  then my vote will be for who ever the Republican candidate is, but as I said before the only candidate that I truely want to vote for is John Edwards.  If he is your candidate than I guarentee that the Democrates will have my republican vote.
Why does it matter how much money you raise?  Doesn't that just mean that those candidates are paid for by the big money makers that are backing them.  It is all hype and has no real bearing on what they will do for the middle class American.  So why vote for a candidate, ie Obama or Clinton, who has already sold out.
