The Columbia State previews tonight’s GOP debate and the issue that could get the most attention: immigration.
A new Winthrop/ETV poll has Obama and Thompson leading their respective fields in South Carolina. On the GOP side, it’s Thompson 18%, Giuliani and Romney at 17%, McCain at 9%, and undecided at 30%. On the Dem side, it’s Obama 35%, Clinton 31%, Edwards 3%, and undecided at 29%. *** Correction *** This poll was passed along to us last night, and we thought it was new; unfortunately, it is from November. It looks like -- despite his decision to play in Michigan – Huckabee’s hanging a lot on winning South Carolina. It's actually a must-win for him.
The L.A. Times looks at McCain's renewed effect in South Carolina. "He is better-organized, reflecting his decision -- criticized in some quarters -- to temper his maverick style with outreach to the establishment. His signature issue is no longer campaign finance; that has been eclipsed by the war in Iraq and immigration."
