Kerry says Obama can 'transform' nation

Posted: Thursday, January 10, 2008 2:58 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
CHARLESTON, SC -- At the College of Charleston here -- far from the snowy fields of Iowa and the leafless trees in New Hampshire -- John Kerry today endorsed Obama for president.

Quoting Martin Luther King, Kerry told the crowd jammed into a courtyard at the college, "The time is always right to do what is right," before beginning a 17-minute-long endorsement of why he has "confidence" to believe that Obama "should be, can be, the next President of the United States."

Saying that it was time for the country to experience "healing" -- a message Kerry said he gave to President Bush when he congratulated him for winning the 2004 election -- the Massachusetts senator told the crowd that Obama had a unique ability to bring people together.

Speaking of his own presidential campaign four years ago, Kerry said that back then he had "committed" himself "to fight for a new era of concern for community and not division. And that he had called President Bush after conceding the election and "warned him of the danger and division in our country and our desperate need for unity."

Kerry commended the other Democrats in the race, saying that each would fight to take the country in the right direction. But he credited Obama with the ""potential to lead a transformation"

Kerry said that the keys to real leadership are judgment and character -- the two words the Obama campaign has said sets their candidate apart. He pointed to the Iraq war, which he had supported but now opposes, and said Obama had been right about it all along.

Kerry also took some of the credit for Obama's speedy rise in Democratic politics. "I'm proud to have helped introduce Barack to our nation when I asked him to speak in 2004. Obviously Barack did all the heavy lifting," he said.

Comparing his international background with Obama's, he said, "Like Barack, I lived abroad as a young man and I share with him a healthy respect for the advantage of knowing other countries and cultures, not from a book or a briefing, but by personal experience, by gut, by instinct," Kerry said.

The thrust of Kerry's message, however, was to add the authority of an elder statesman to Obama's message and address the two main criticism leveled against him: inexperience and that his call for change lacks substance.

Kerry compared Obama's youth to that of Thomas Jefferson's when he was 33 and wrote the Declaration of Independence or Martin Luther King Jr.'s when he lead the Montgomery bus boycott at 26 or gave "The I Have a Dream Speech" at 34.

Taking on the charge of "false hope" raised by Clinton, Kerry compared that idea to innovative ideas put forward by former presidents -- including FDR's call for Social Security, JFK's goal to land on the moon, and Thomas Jefferson's belief in public education.

Obama joined Kerry on the stage and the two exchanged hugs, and he thanked Kerry not only for his endorsement but his service to the country. His remarks were similar to those he gave in New Hampshire two days ago, ending his speech with a resounding, "Yes we can!" that was echoed by the audience.

The endorsement of Kerry may not bring votes to Obama, but it allows him to point to established Washington politicians that can lend his insurgent candidacy an air of legitimacy that some say he lacks because of his limited time in national politics. It also allows Obama to show that major Democratic leaders nationally are not flocking to Clinton's campaign, slightly undercutting any momentum coming out of her win in New Hampshire.

The endorsement may also raise some eyebrows. Critics might point to Obama's criticism of Edwards right before the Iowa contest by leveling the same charge against him that was brought against John Kerry in the 2004 race. "We are less likely also to win an election with somebody who had one set of positions four years ago and has almost entirely different positions four years later," Obama said.

"We've been through that. It's a problem and so if you are concerned with delectability having somebody who has been consistent, who has opposed the war from the start so the opponent can't say he was for the war just like I was," he added.

Oh great.  Hillary lost an endorsement so she'll probably cry to get more sympathy votes.

What happened to her being able to take one on the chin and still come back fighting?  It's personal, not poiltical?!?  What's that about?  I think it her feeling of entitlement that somehow she deserves the whitehouse because she is a Clinton.

I wonder which facial tissue will be the official tissue of the whitehouse should she win?  I'm betting it will probably be the Kleenex with Aloe in a box with the American Flag on the side.
Obama promised to serve his full first Senate term.

He also seem to suggest that his being a 1st. term junior Senator didn't qualify him to be President.

He thought the question - would he run for Prez in '08 - was a "silly" question.

Obama in the Sun-Times:

Obama telling Russert he wasn't running:

Now the over eager Chicago pol argue he has a different kind of "experience".
Yes OBAMA can tranform not only this Nation but also the World.
Bush-Clinton, Bush-Clinton, Bush-Clinton is an encouragement to all Monarchies,Dynasties and Dictators around the world.
Wake up America and answer the call as you've done in the past. Can the world still count or look up to America for Leadership? Please, America remember you're the last hope of the underprivilege around the world. Please make us believe in you again.
This again shows everyone how much of a farce Kerry was in 2004. The "I was for it - before I was against it" candidate flip-flops again. Kerry had never even heard of Obama four years ago, and now he picks Obama instead of the guy he thought should be the VP? Democrats are like that though, always doing things for the moment rather then planning for the long term. Edwards was Kerry's running mate simply to try and win a southern state, not that Edwards had anything else to add to the ticket. Just like with Clinton and Gore, you could tell Kerry didn't much like Edwards, and Edwards felt the same about Kerry. We were lucky to have those two lose in 2004.
I agree whole heartedly with Senator Kerry - I couldn't have said it any better myself . . . and I have tried! :)
Day 10.. todate Obama has raised 10.5 million dollars over a million a day not counting fund raisers...Hillary 1.5 million with 5 million PROMISED...whats that Promised?..if they wanted to give it why didn't they...more of Terry M spinning.

According to Van in Oct they had already raised close to 100 million and would raise 100% more than Obama in  Q4.  Seems that number is turning out to be only 2 million more.

Better hurry and catch up Van the money is rolling in.  Crying may have got her one victory...but that dog won't hunt twice.  The CWU in Nevada is going to bust her bad  and well SC.......
From Rassmussen Reports.com:

'...Election 2008: South Carolina Democratic Primary
South Carolina: No Bounce for Clinton in the Palmetto State
Thursday, January 10, 2008

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in South Carolina shows Barack Obama continuing to hold a double digit-lead over Hillary Clinton in the January 26th Primary Election. The survey, conducted the night after Clinton’s stunning victory in New Hampshire, shows no bounce for the victor.

In fact, there is virtually no change in the numbers at all.
It’s Obama 42% Clinton 30%. John Edwards attracts 15% of the vote,...'

Slick Wille has made many friends in the Black community
He's been smearing Obama...
Hillary has been distorting Obama's record

Let's see the results in SC for the 'Queen of Mean' ....

National Tracking from RassmussenReports.com:

'...Daily Presidential Tracking Poll
Thursday, January 10, 2008
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Thursday shows Mike Huckabee still narrowly on top in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. It’s Huckabee 22%, John McCain 18%, Mitt Romney 18%, Fred Thompson 10%, and Rudy Giuliani at 10%.Ron Paul attracts 4% support (see recent daily numbers).

In the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, it’s now
Clinton 34%, Barack Obama 33% and John Edwards 15% (see recent daily numbers).
Those numbers reflect a two-point gain for Clinton, a two-point gain for Obama, and a four-point decline for Edwards....'

Hillary 'Lonely Teardrops' Clinton !!!

Look at all the Hillary supporter's whinning over this Endorsement.Someone call the WAAAAAAAAAAaaambulance!!!!The sympathy vote went over well in New Hampshire, deny if you want, i don't think it will work again. Women are smarter than that.
Now let's review a few thing's about Hillary. She lived on Arkansas taxpayer's for 12 year's as 1st lady there. She lived off of American taxpayer's for 8 years as America's 1st lady. She has lived off of New York Taxpayer's for the last 7 year's. She's a Welfare case, Plain & simple. Can you Hillary supporter's deny this FACT? Has she Not lived off of Taxpayer's for 27 year's & counting?
I AM TOTALLY DISGUSTED WITH HILLARY USING FEAR TO SCARE UP VOTES.75% of Democrats Polled in New Hampshire said they Feared a terrorist attack. This after a campaign appearance on Monday. Can you Deny this Fact?

Let's Not forget that ONLY 15 American's have lost thier lives so far this year in Iraq. A useless War That Hillary voted for! She & her Husband are disgusting!!!!

Let's Not Forget that she stood beside Bill when he LIED to America & the World about Sex.She called it a Right Wing conspiracy, Knowing full well, they were Both LYING. Get this bunch out of American Politic's, today is Not to soon.

Barack Obama for President!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, How this for President Obama:

Vice President: Joe Bidden
Secretary of State: Condi Rice
Secretary of Defense: Colin Powell
Attorney General: John Edwards
National Security Adviser: John Kerry
Environmental Protection Agency: Al Gore
Secretary of the Treasury: Warren Buffet

This would be an awesome dream team, they would take no prisoners.

One empty suit endorsing another...

Hate to say it, but even Hillary is better than Obama.
Rasmussen released a new poll from South Carolina, taken entirely post-New Hampshire. Obama maintains his lead from a few days ago, so no bounce or movement at all for Clinton who still trails her rival:

Obama gets 42% to Clinton's 30% and Edwards's 15%.
I believe Rasmussen did not supply the breakdown of the African-American vote which is truly the test going forward into this election. The black vote has massively moved towards Obama over the past three-four weeks and that will make it very hard for Clinton to even move close here unless she finds a way to start reversing that trend.

I just want to wish Sen. Obama much success, and let him know that his hometown is all for him. Rock On!
I watched on TV and cringed - John Kerry has not improved his public speaking at all! What was Obama thinking? Oh yeah, that's right - he's got to get some credentials from that Washington establishment he is so eager to change.

And to invoke Martin Luther King??? That is a slap in the face to the King family. I doubt Obama's youth spent surfing in Hawaii gives him any insight into what Dr. King had to endure.
THE DEMOCRATS DONT GET IT, THEY CANT WIN WITH ANYYONE, TILL THEY GET SOME MORALS, QUIT HOPING FOR US TO LOSE THE WAR, AND SHOWING CONTEMPT FOR OUR MILITARY.
More of nothing, Kerry used his time to spout nothing, Obama as Jefferson, PLEASEEEEEE! Jefferson was a man of ideas, after looking at Obamas web site I have nothing to base my voting for him, SUBSTANCE, IDEAS and real issues will be the reason many americans vote this year. Seven years of symbolism over substance has been our problem, can't vote for someone that does not support REAL change. Obama will not get my vote, PERIOD!
Swift boat Kerry has got to be the ultimate kiss of death! Obama should run from him!
OMG!  another sucker fell for Obama's "unity" crap.
Obama can't even bring senate Democrats together - and he endorsed warmonger Lieberman and turned his back on anti-war Lamont.
Lieberman has now endorsed McCain.
Oh yeah - that's bringing us all together!
i believe this to be true. the desire to work together brings better results than the partisan politics that would happen if hillary gets into the white house. the gop will not work with hillary. it will be the reverse of the dem's working with bush. just more fighting and polarization.

this is what i think the dnc establishment is looking at.
I know politicians shouldn't confuse me, but John Kerry still does.  Four years ago he chose John Edwards as his running mate, telling the nation that Edwards was best qualified to step into the presidency should Kerry be unable to finish his term.  Now he tells us Edwards isn't?  Politics -- er, politicians -- sure strange.
Kerry is also a Super Delegate, which means one more delegate to Obama at the convention!
About 90% of comments locally in Boston are that the Kerry endorsement is a big negative for Obama.
Before everyone on this board who supports a different [Democratic] candidate starts to dump on the endorser and begins to associate Sen. Obama with a campaign that has already lost 4 years ago, remember that we are all in the end supposed to be Proud Democrats.  After all, Sen. Kerry is an elder statesman in our party.  The goal is to win the White House and to actually have the power to govern instead of being obstructed at every turn by Mr. Bush's Rubberstamp Republican Brigade.  I strongly believe Sen. Obama is our best chance.  Some of you fellow Democrats may have a different opinion and that is good because we all have that freedom here in America.

I have been a long time reader of these posts and I would like to offer a challenge to a few of you (especially Van, Dickie Flatts, J. Merle Stanley, Bee, Carrie, and Sierra).  Before tearing down all of our candidates with your posts I would like to ask that you say something positive about the opposition.

I'll be the first to start.
I believe that Sen. Clinton is highly intelligent and truly is concerned with the welfare of our young people.

I believe that Sen. Edwards has true conviction and for him this race is personal and maybe his time away from Washington has truly opened his eyes to the everyday struggle.

I believe that Sen. Obama has shown the judgment, class, and the ability to create a broad-based coalition that will be able to make a positive change for America.

All of our candidates have strengths and weaknesses but I feel that Sen. Obama would be the best president.  All of you people shouldn't have a problem with saying something positive about the other Democratic candidates.  You are Democrats (aren't you?) or are you some Republicans in disguise.
I honestly think that Kerry endorsement will be mor helpful to Edwards than Obama. Kerry does not fit withObama anti-washington (outsider) appeal and his change message of turning the page.
He has to close Clinton out. She has a chance to re-invent herself, he must needle her and tie her, respectfully, to the status quo.

The most infuriating exit poll stat of the campaign is that Hillary won the vote as "someone who cares about us". Obama needs to close the deal with beer democrats.

HTF can he allow the establishment candidate to win over "nanny-state democrats".
Truth does not need any boasting as it stands on it's own not needing futher searching ... this is what I see in Mr. Obama and hopefully he will be able to remain strong in his convictions of Truth and lead his country into a better position for the sake of his fellowman and planet earth. He is annointed and that is undeniable.
Did Obama have any words of encouragement for his indicted friend Tony Rezko?   He and Tony were pretty tight back in Chicago.  It must break Obama's heart to see the poor guy looking at hard time in the slam.
Okay so I was weirded out that Kerry left out "will be". But I looked at Hotline On Call, and they have: "Barack Obama can be, will be and should be the next president of the United States." Who's got the right quote?
I'm supporting Senator Barack Obama in his race for the presidency because he is in a unique position to reach across party lines and unite our country,” said Senator Johnson.  “The problem with Washington has become the increasingly partisan nature that produces more roadblocks than results. I believe Senator Obama is a candidate of change who will bridge the partisan divide and deliver progress for our nation.

“While we are very fortunate to have a field of candidates running for President who are qualified, capable and smart, Senator Obama has already proven he can win in the heartland and has great appeal to rural Americans.  As a red state Senator fighting for common ground, I look forward to working with a President who is more concerned with good ideas than partisan bickering, and I believe Senator Obama is that person,” added Johnson.

“Senator Johnson has worked with Democrats, Republicans and independents to get things done throughout his decades of service to South Dakota, and I’m honored to have his endorsement,” said Senator Barack Obama.  “Tim Johnson is an inspiration to his colleagues and constituents, a leader who has fought on in the face of adversity.  Senator Johnson knows that after years of division, Americans are ready to unite around a common purpose so that we can bring change the challenges they face in their communities everyday."

Senator Tim Johnson has served the people of South Dakota since 1978 when he was elected to the State House.  He’s a strong champion of fiscal responsibility and the agricultural community, and he serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Budget Committee, the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and the Indian Affairs Committee.  Johnson also chaired the Select Committee on Ethics in 2006.
IF THE STUPID DEMS THINK THE REPUBLICANS ARE GOING TO JOIN THEM IN KILLING BABIES, PRAYING FOR US TO LOSE WAR, PRAYING FOR THE DEATH OF OUR SOLDIERS AT FUNERALS, BECOMING ANTI-CHRIST, GOING ON WELFARE, LETTING OUR KIDS FORM GANGS TO MURDER AND ROB, LETTING ILLEGALS VOTE FOR FOOD STAMPS AND SOCIAL SERVCES, CALL BILL CLINTON A ROCKSTAR INSTEAD OF A PERVERT, THINK ITS OK FOR HILLARY TO TAKE DRUG AND CRIMINAL MONEY FOR BILL S PARDONS

  YOU ARE CRAZY
Our President has the ability to inspire us as a nation into action or to divide us apart into inaction.  For the last 8 years we've seen the latter.  What we need to ask ourselves, is that what do we want out of the next 4 to 8 years.
While I think Hillary Clinton does an (overall) okay job as a Senator, her Presidency would be littered with nothing but stalled plans and divisive politics and costly mistakes that I don't feel the country can handle at this point.
Most historians will agree that Obama's rhetoric matches that of the likes of Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR and Kennedy.  Great men that inspired a nation to enact change for the betterment of all.  Great Presidents who had ambitious goals, who clung to hope and who achieved success by inspiring America to act.  That is why I am voting for Obama.  I don't like people to crush my hopes and dreams, like clinton and her false hopes comment.  her lack of faith in the american people to persevere in times of trouble, i.e. hope, quite frankly disturbs me.  Don't tell us to have false hopes, your job as president would be to give us hope not squash it right in front of us.
What's she gonna do next, address the nations 5 year olds to tell them santa clause isn't real?

Hillary Who?

Obama 08
"It also allows Obama to show that major Democratic leaders nationally are not flocking to Clinton's campaign, slightly undercutting any momentum coming out of her win in New Hampshire."

So in the last two days, Obama won as many delegates as Clinton, raised more money than her, received more major endorsements, and has seen his lead in South Carolina and his tie for the lead nationally uneffected.  I'd say undercutting Clinton's momentum coming out of New Hampshire would be one way to put it.
'...Kerry said that the keys to real leadership are judgment and character -- the two words the Obama campaign has said sets their candidate apart. He pointed to the Iraq war, which he had supported but now opposes, and said Obama had been right about it all along...'

'Judgement and character' those are two qualities that set Obama apart from Hillary

Obama had the judgement to oppose the Iraq war FROM THE BEGINNING
Try to spin that Slick Willie ... YOU CAN'T

As for character.....
Look at ALL the scandals bubbling around the Clintons
It's WASN'T a 'vast right wing conspiracy'
He really did have sex with 'that woman'

Eat your heart out, Hillary
You just don't have it....
You never did....

Eat your heart out, Hillary .....

'Lonley Teardrops' Jackie Wilson
When Sen. Clinton announced her bid for the presidency, I was a bid fired up! but then Obama came along and proved himself... I support Obama more than I ever supported Hillary. Hillary's supporters or Obama's few haters like to throw jabs at the senator, implying that he is all rhetoric, and no substance, but in my humble opinion, Hillary is -along with Huckabee- the candidate with the lack of substance.

Let's say the NH results were genuine; How did Hillary win? She got the sympathy vote... There's no doubt about that...

Hillary's tears;

Some people claimed that the emotional display was real, and some claim that it was fake. I am NOT surprised with the current "revelations" of Obama's fraud connections. That's what we would expect of the Clintons' fraudulent spin machine...

What everyone should ask themselves is this;

What's worse? Hillary FAKING emotional display, or Hillary SHOWING genuine emotional display?
Ok, How this for President Obama:

Vice President: Joe Bidden
Secretary of State: Condi Rice (NOT)
Secretary of Defense: Colin Powell
Attorney General: John Edwards
National Security Adviser: John Kerry
Environmental Protection Agency: Al Gore
Secretary of the Treasury: Warren Buffet

This would be an awesome dream team, they would take no prisoners.

I can't stomach Obama.. or Kerry for that matter. I wish the people of this country would stop caving for the media and celebrity bull.... , vote for someone who has the experience to run THIS COUNTRY. Obama is desperate and Kerry is a traitor.  Hopefully the 90% negative attention this will bring to Obama's campaign will be a reality check. You all are asking for it. You wanted Bush.. you got nothing but trouble.  Instant repeat with Obama.
Did it ever occur to the media loving, celebrity following, stupid American people.. that Obama could be a plant? Open thy eyes people. VOTE FOR AN AMERICAN.
Sean: '...About 90% of comments locally in Boston are that the Kerry endorsement is a big negative for Obama...'

Sean, try sneaking out of Clinton campaign Hqs.
Are you being held hostage ?

Obama transform our nation? Into what, muslims?
I'd like to commend C.K. Steele (above) for his comments about the entire Democratic field of candidates.  I happen to be "for" on candidate more than another, and as a registered Democrat in Nevada, will be at the caucus on Jan. 19 to stand for that candidate.  However, no matter which of the remaining candidates wins the nomination, I'll be solidly behind him OR her in the general election campaign, and would expect that all of us who have been so thoroughly disgusted by the last 7 years of the Bush administration would say the same thing.  Obama, Clinton and Edwards ALL stand for change, and each of them would take us light years away from the blunders of "W".  Let's remember, folks, that we're engaged in a positive process to select the BEST candidate.  Some of you sound like the Republicans who trashed Kerry in 2004!!!  Wake up and be proud that you're not having to choose from the likes of Huckabee, Romney, Guiliani , etc.!!!!
very good point rob
Does anyone think that Kerry endorsed Obama just so he could be considered as a key player in his Administration, pending his nomination of the Democratic Party? (AKA Potential VP Running Mate or other cabinet member?)
Thank you Rob.  That's the spirit!  Us Democrats need to keep our eyes on the prize.

You are absolutely correct about the sorry group that the Republicans have to choose from.  That can even be seen in their lack of voter enthusiasm and the surge of enthusiasm in the Democratic contest.  I just pray that we don't mess it up this time.
It amazes me how people who thought just four years ago that John Kerry should be president now are willing to call him all sorts of silly names.
If I may be so bold as to challenge Mr. Anders (above)... those who support a woman's right to make her own reproductive decisions are not in favor of "killing babies" -- we're just in favor of letting ALL women make their own choices, and not just those women  wealthy enough to jet off to Europe to have their abortions in secret, which is exactly what was happening with wealthy Republican women before Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court.  Nor are we in favor of "losing a war" -- we simply recognize the undeniable truth that George Bush got us into a war he cannot win, at a cost this nation cannot afford, both in lives and in money.  As for the rest of your nonsensical ravings, I'd suggest you take a big dose of reality, and face the stark truth that the Republican leadership you defend so fiercely has sold you down the river, and the rest of us right along with you.  In my view, sir, YOU are the crazy one.
Dickie Flatts, charlotte: '...pretty tight back in Chicago.  It must break Obama's heart to see the poor guy looking at hard time in the slam....'

Kinda like Bill and Hillary with Norman Hsu (or Webster Hubbell or Peter Paul)
Bill introduced Norman Hsu as 'my good friend, Norman'
That sounds close
Norman was a HillRaiser (and a hell raiser) for Hillary  He raised $850,000 fpr Hillary this time around.
Did Hillary send him any message during his sentencing ?

Hillary must be eating her heart out about Kerry

Imagine a fellow Senator choosing Obama instead of Hillary
Why was that, Dickie ?
Rob, Los Angeles, CA: '...I'd like to commend C.K. Steele...'

Obama, Clinton and Edwards ALL stand for change, and each of them would take us light years away from the blunders of "W".  Let's remember, folks, that we're engaged in a positive process to select the BEST candidate....'

Points well taken
I have to admit ANY of ours would be better than the Republicans
But, it is hard to say something nice about the other side when I feel Obama is being smeared and his words are being twisted....

Good points by both of you
Thanks
This is hilarious- Kerry will hurt Obama?

Now, just how many people voted for this 'hurter-just 4 years ago?

Can't be too bad then, now can he?

Obama '08 -  because YES WE CAN
MJL - just out of curiosity, who are you supporting?
In your opinion are Congressional Endorsements 'Overrated'?
