Another senator endorses Obama

Posted: Thursday, January 10, 2008 4:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) has endorsed Obama, according to the Obama campaign.

"I'm supporting Senator Barack Obama in his race for the presidency because he is in a unique position to reach across party lines and unite our country," Johnson said in release from the Obama campaign. "The problem with Washington has become the increasingly partisan nature that produces more roadblocks than results. I believe Senator Obama is a candidate of change who will bridge the partisan divide and deliver progress for our nation.

"While we are very fortunate to have a field of candidates running for President who are qualified, capable and smart, Senator Obama has already proven he can win in the heartland and has great appeal to rural Americans."

Earlier today, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) endorsed Obama and joined him at a rally in South carolina. Obama now has four senators' endorsement. So in one day, he has doubled his senatorial support. Ten senators have endorsed Clinton.

Somebody may be building a looser, to make sure the WH is kept in the wrong hands. Watch out AMERICA!!!!
the kneecapping will soon begin. bill was just getting started in n.h. i hope hrc turns him loose. it will result in a big backfire.

the establishment is taking notice. this is a fight between two heavyweight contenders. the superdelegates are in play. this has to worry the clinton camapign. to have senators and unions coming out for obama is going to make it easier for others to step forward.

it was reported that the clinton campaign was on the phone for a long time trying to persuade the culinary union to support them. they turned the clinton's down and supported obama. this is going to be a slugfest.
The Repubicans of the Congress and Senate will chew Obama up and spit him out. HA!
'...bridge the partisan divide...' Laughable.
Thanks Tim Johnson; between you and Tom Daschle I love SD.  My Dad was stationed in Mitchell during the second World War.  I don't think that's where I got my name, but who knows?
Trying very hard to change the storyline
Obama is the underdog to watch.He gets the endorsements of two senators within 2 days. Clinton wrapped up Bills acolades.
You know what - all these bozos are doing is making us women mad.  If the good old boys keep this up, it is going to be women against the men.  I'm not going to have it.  They are stupid too.  As far as most people are concerned, Kerry is a non-entity.  The Culinary Union is second to the Gaming Industry.  Guess who is more important?
There will be more.  There are plenty of people in the Senate who are just as sick as we are of the petty, divisive politics of the past.  They wanted to see if Obama was for real, I can understand that. Now things will get interesting.
Dear Friends:
Sally Sue looked at her husband after reading this and he yawned,  "  So what? "
Amen.
I was watching MSNBC this afternoon and here we go, the first thing in the discussion was how Kerry would hurt Sen. Obama.
If Sen. Obama wins this Presidential bid it won't be because of the prejudice shown by MSNBC, Chuck Todd and the rest of the gang !!!
God Help us all !!!
It's becoming increasingly clear that elected Democrats do not believe that Hillary can win in a general election. She would not be able to draw in the needed moderates and independents to defeat a Republican.

I was a big fan of Bill Clinton in the 90s, but it's time to move this country forward.
Thank You Sen. John Kerry and Sen. Tim Johnson for endorsing Obama for president. Calling-calling Al Gore and Sen. Ted Kennedy???
2 Senators for Obama.... Hillary already has 10 endorsements and many more coming

Hillary's Senate endorsements include:

   * Indiana Senator Evan Bayh
   * Washington Senator Maria Cantwell
   * California Senator Dianne Feinstein
   * Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye
   * New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez
   * Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski
   * Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor
   * New York Senator Charles Schumer
   * Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow
   * Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse
You mean THE Tim Johnson????

.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........

First John Kerry, now Tim Johnson - boy he's really racking up those sterling endorsments.......anything to try and change the dialogue from New Hampshire.

No matter - it'll be forgotton before Morning Joe....
Bionic Woman:  Guess what?  There are women, like the woman who consented to marry me, who don't vote by gender. They vote because of the quality of the candidate.  It's my wife who got me to recognize the qualities of Barack Obama because of his strong opposition to the war.  Don't reduce all women to your level of superficiality.
Obama '08
why is this looked at as against women? it would be saying that people vote for barack because he is half white and half black. why must this go down hill into a gender fight? i think that is so far off base. i would hope we all are better than to think like that.

isn't this about support of the candidate you believe in, not gender or race? if that is the only reason that a person is voting then they have missed the boat all together.

that is ignorant. to me that is as bad as someone saying hillary won in new hampshire because she was white and barack is black. i won't believe that kind of ugliness and i won't vote for someone because they are a woman or man.

that is utterly ridiculous and insulting to suggest to someone that should be their reason to vote. i hope we all are more intelligent than that to stoop that low.
To anyone who may be working in the Obama campaign and reads this -

A friend of mine who has worked in campaigns at a very high level since the 1970's worked as a volunteer in Rochester, NH on Tuesday for Senator Obama. It was his impression that while Obama is running an excellent campaign, he didn't think the campaign did a good job of "closing the deal" in New Hampshire.

There were hardly any Obama campaign volunteers outside of the polls assisting voters, yet Clinton had tons of volunteers at his polling site.

There was also a lot of complaining about the number of telephone calls people were getting from Obama's campaign, and very little house to house get out the vote campaigning.

I hope this isn't a problem as we all move forward to do our best to elect Senator Obama.

On the positive side, he said it was an extraordinary site to see and meet people from all across the country, including California, Oregon, etc., in New Hampshire supporting Barack Obama.
Odd. Bill Clinton just endorsed Obama.
Welcome aboard, Sen Johnson. Now prepare to be called silly names, lol.
This makes no sense......He's an agent of change but you are all looking for him to get endorsements from the entrenched establishment, i.e. Kerry, Kennedy.

So you Obama supporters want the change, but you want to use the people already entrenched in Washington to try to give him some street credentials. Give me a freakin' break!

You Obama-maniacs are just as hypocritical as your candidate. Whatever it takes to get him into the WH.

Why not give his best friend Tony Rezko a call and see if he can campaign for him from prison?? This is gonna be a fun summer watching the Emperor's clothes being torn away!

Well BionicWoman, I don't share you beliefs...

What was really sad about the women’s vote in New Hampshire was that it was based on emotion and not logic.

It was emotions that lead us into the wrong war…And now it’s logic wanting us to get out…

I am so very surprised and disappointed with some of the women's from New Hampshire, once again you allowed yourselves to be manipulated by emotions… So you voted for the Clintons to be are next President because Hillary cried? This is so sad so sad…. You felt like the men were ganging up on her and because she could not handled it and broke down in a manipulated cry…..You voted for her....So you don't take your country seriously....This is not only about "YOUR" emotions, this is about everything.....

If your healthcare cost continued to rise, will you accept the cost and turned the other way when Hillary CRIES
If are soldier are not pulled from this war in Iraq ---- will you continue to let them suffer and die when Hillary CRIES
When you gas cost continued to rise - will you then say, the cost is worth it because Hillary CRIES
When you lose your home because your mortgage has become difficult to pay---- will you be okay going homeless because Hillary CRIES
When your income stays at a stand still, while every other cost rises ----- will you be okay with your family suffering because Hillary CRIES
When you can't afford to send your child to college even though the Clintons sent their daughter to Oxford University in England  --- Will you then say, it's more important for their daughter to have the best education because Hillary CRIES

So tell me women of New Hampshire what do you think is going to happen if she makes it to the general election….Are you going to continue to vote on emotions…..What are you going to do if the Clintons win the presidency and once again we are bombarded with investigation after investigation and nothing in the country is getting done because her personality is so divisive that everyone roots against her.....

You essentially are giving up everything because you based your decision on emotion and not logic.....And will jeopardize us from taking our country by doing so.....

The rest of the women of America rise up and be recognized..... Let show the rest of the world that this common thinking only lies in New Hampshire..... Let show the rest of America that it is are family and welling being that comes first and not the sympathy will feel for Hillary because she CRIED.....

PEOPLE, President OBAMA said that WE CAN, I JUST VOTED BY ABSENTEE BALLOT IN SAN FRANCISCO. I DID MY PART AND ASK EACH ONE OF YOU TO DO THE SAME.
OBAMA 08.
Pat - I'm sure all campaigns are doing their after-action reports and incorporating those kinds of lessons learned in their future plans. Interesting post; thanks for putting that up.
There will be more.  There are plenty of people in the Senate who are just as sick as we are of the petty, divisive politics of the past.  They wanted to see if Obama was for real, I can understand that. Now things will get interesting.
Peter, San Francisco, CA (Sent

If they wanted to cross the petty divide they would indorse a republican. How does one party endorsing another member of their party cross a divide. The idea that only a member of one party could fix the rift and that the other party could never do it is just more of the same old divide. It cracks me up when any politician spouts off with this drivle. They all believe that their party is flawless and the middle of the road is when the other party comes around to their way of thinking. That is why general elections are a 50/50 split that will not change.
How exactly do you bridge divides like these?

On the one side "Stay the course in Iraq" ... on the other "Bring the troops home".

On the one side "Extend tax cuts" ... on the other "Repeal tax cuts"

On the one side "Close off the borders" ... on the other "Support immigrant populations"

On the one side "Keep US energy corporations competitive" ... on the other "Reduce carbon emissions"

On the one side "Raise the minimum wage" ... on the other "Incentivize entrepreneurship"

On the one side "Reduce government spending" ... on the other "Increase government spending"

These aren't bridgeable divides, these are polar opposites.  The incoming President won't be able to tackle these issues without coming down on one side or the other - he'll need to do more than be merely "present" in the White House...
Agreed.  No one wants a "looser," though I'm not sure exactly what that implies.  Perhaps Jos meant "loser," however I have no idea how two completely different individuals such as George W. Bush and Barack Obama could be classified as such (especially if Obama wins the general election, making that 3 presidential elections won between the two candidates).  If you're going to disagree with a person, try to sound intelligent.

Watch out America, indeed.
Paul:  We can change the direction of the party without making the old commanders walk the plank.  It's flattering to Obama that they support his new command.  That's what being a real leader is all about.  Don't be so strident.  Change can be accomplished without bloodletting.

Note to all. The above is a great way to make friends and influence people. Note that calling people that disagree with you names is a wonderful way to open communications and accomplish your goals. I for one am now comfortable that citizens such as BW above will be reasonable and pleasant to work with. Thanks BW for your in depth analysis of how we should behave towards each other.
Bionicwoman,
Obama has plenty of women supporting him.  Ok so now everytime a women supports Hillary we should immediately assume it is because she is a women.  Our country is better than this.  Stop already.
I thought Kerry & Johnson were the entrenched losers that Sen. Obama was running against???
Hillary's Senate endorsements include:

  * Indiana Senator Evan Bayh
  * Washington Senator Maria Cantwell
  * California Senator Dianne Feinstein
  * Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye
  * New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez
  * Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski
  * Arkansas Senator Mark Pryor
  * New York Senator Charles Schumer
  * Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow

And why are these people important...They are not the powerful ones...with the exception of New York Senator Charles Schumer, and sometimes he can demonstrate not having a back bone....(ATTORNEY GENERAL)
Loving it, anything to keep a Republican in the White House.
Great, anything to keep a Republican in the White House.

This is a really stupid statement... I am woman who does not support your candidate...I was personally offended by her Manipulated Tears....And "YOU" want this person to be are next president....We cry at funerals in public, we don't cry for all the world to see because we are going through a tough campaign....What is she going to do when something major happens.... Have a complete break down and then will that make the BionicWoman Happy.
And when you make threats please do not include all women... You should be voting for Hillary in spite of not because she's a woman.....There so many women like my self who completely disgusted with type of campaigning the CLINTONS are running.... And that is something we won't forget.....
Sadly express in many of your comments, you have no idea what's at task..... And the polls continue show (what maybe true) that the less educated people support Hillary..... So what does that say about Hillary...And what does that say about you.......
You are not entitled to be President of the United State because you are woman.... Your statements continue to demonstrate why NO CHILD-LEFT BEHIND should be thrown out...... Please go educate yourself...... instead of voting for a symbol, why not try using logic......you will find it's most helpful
California Senator Dianne Feinst is a TOTAL WASTE !
She voted for:
the Iraq War, war against Iran, Atty Gen Mukasey, amnesty for telecom companies......

Yesterday, 10 Senators for Clinton and 0 for Obama
Today: 10 Senators for Clinton and 2 for Obama

The odds are getting better
and you can keep Feinstein !!

Paul (Sent Thursday, January 10, 2008 5:26 PM)

I hate to burst your bubble, Paul, but I believe EVERY Democratic candidate is running on change. And last I checked (and it has even been reported as a point of pride by some Clinton supporters), Sen. Clinton has more endorsements by the "entrenched establishment" than Obama.

So, by your own reasoning, doesn't that make YOU as hypocritical as YOUR candidate?
I spent the entire day at  a  n.c. - v.a. hospital.  In the waiting room.! as my husband was being seen.  The general conversation was a eye opener.   Black vets think that obama is the sun and the moon. white vets were not happy and whispered about the room was; if he wins it then i will have to vote for the other guy. the republicans must love this.are they financing him as a strategy  so they win ? ? ?
I think Paul hit it on the head: If you're about change, why rely on the old establishment hacks.  If I were Obama, I'd distance myself from Kerry, Kennedy and Gore, who are all established losers.  Seems like a kiss of death.

Same could be said for Hillary aligning herself so closely with her infamous hubby, Bill.  Does she think we've all forgotten what an embarassment he was to the office of President?

Too bad the best qualified candidates - Biden, Richardson and Dodd - couldn't hang in there longer.
Woman against Hillary, thanks for the post. I supported the Clintons in the 90's but now I think it's time for them to go. Unfortunately, I think they will do anything to maintain control. Forget splittig the country. I think they're willing to tear apart the Democratic party if it comes to that.

What did Hillary say in her tearful remarks? She doesn't want to see us go backwards? People, that's exactly where she wants to go.

I don't know still who I will vote for, but Hillary's crying did affect me in a very profound way.  Not because she is a woman but becuase I saw her as human for the first time.  No doubt, she is a master debater but I've always wondered if she wanted to win the debate or make a difference.  I think she is good at hiding her feelings but I don't think she can act.
I wouldnt get to excited about Kerry endorsement I voted for him as a last option but i dont think this means a hill of Beans...My suggestion to Obama is to continue on with what your message is...I havent voted yet or decided,But you have that shot that many of ous independents are willing go give you. We want change not a lot of this old regime who  all of a sudden seem to see the light, that they are part of the Change   they have raped the American people with corruption, theft, lies, porkbarrelling., and it goe on. They have the best benefits that they American would like to have after all we pay for it but have no say...Change im for it. Dont give me a hand out but give me a chance.
Not only women, but intelligent, well-informed voters - men or women, should vote for Hillary Clinton. This is not a religious sermon or pop rally. This is an election for the most powerful office on the planet. Remember, international experience, and separation of church and state should be the main priorities. These are some of the reasons we are having problems with our government. It is okay to believe in something and be inspired, but do not enforce your beliefs on my freedom of choice and speech.
Obama, at this stage in his career, would be nothing more than a puppet and would constantly flip-flop if he were to get into the White House, in order to appear to be working across party lines - exactly what Republicans would use to their advantage against the Democrats and middle-class America, then Obama would receive the blame. Don't be foolish once again. Vote for Hillary. Once she straightens out the current mess in the White House, maybe 8 years from now consider an "experienced" Obama to take over the reigns and bring the factions together. Priorities are important.
First, we need a candidate to show some fight and take it to the Republican Party in order to take America back, then, and only then, can there be some type of reconciliation.
Do not get fooled by the Neo-cons again.
Obama agent of change? Thats a dream and we know that very well in Illinois. Where he has been since we elected him to the US Senate? Now we know...he have been running for the Presidency to bring there the Illinois and Chicago machine. That's what will change the Texas Bush machine for the Illinois Delay, Madigan, Strogger, Jackson, and other machine!

It's easy to talk about change when the same old machine is endorsing you and the big powers are pouring the bulk of the money to get you elected! Thats a change anyone can make!

As a resident of Illinois I have long been disgusted with the "under the table" corruption that runs RAMPANT here. What disgusts me even more is that when blatant evidence is exposed, the accused individual always finds a way to "make it go away". Chicago Mayor Daley is the chief source of most of the corruption in the state ("Operation Silver Shovel", etc.), but somehow he's always able to walk away with his hands clean. Oh, by the way, he's a big Obama supporter. Also, Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan (and current Illinois Democratic Party Chairman) was under investigation by the Feds. No problem. He and the Illinois Democratic Machine got Madigan's daughter elected Attorney General of Illinois. Gee, what ever happened to that investigation...........As far as the Rezko case, Obama is not the only one having a connection to Rezko. Rezko was a fundraiser and close friend of the current governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich - a governor who is also being investigated by the Feds for his own corrupt practices. (Ironically, Blagojevich came to power by vowing to clean up the corruption created by Republican Governor George Ryan.)Those of you who still aren't convinced that Barack Obama is yet another cog in the Illinois corruption machine should look up the Todd Stroger Cook County Board election scandal. Barack Obama unabashedly threw his full support to Todd Stroger despite the dubious way Stroger even got to become a cadidate. Why would Obama even endorse such shennanigans? I don't have enough time to go into this one, but trust me, it's a beauty. Look it up!Whether Obama himself is corrupt is yet to be determined, but his associations do cause alarm. Are these the same associations that would follow him to the White House? Obama is not "squeeky clean". We in Illinois know better.I will close by saying that I am not a Republican. I am not a Democrat. I have been forced into cynical independency from Illinois polititians that continue to disappoint.
______________________________

I am constantly annoyed by women who think male endorsements for Obama are only gender based. This line of thinking - when noticed by men - gives the appearance women can't LOGICALLY choose a candidate, instead opting to use anger and imagined gender attacks as their basis.

Is this who the Hillary supporters are? I should hope not!
I am so disgusted by the fact that older, educated women in NH voted for Hillary because she cried. If this is the way people vote in this country for their emotionalism and not for the policies and beliefs the candidates hold; then GOD Have mercy! A glaring fact about women breaking under pressure(she broke down because she thought she was losing to Barack)itself shows that the presidency requires grit and toughness which she proves she is lacking and unable to handle her emotions. Wake up America! and do the right thing this time.You were wrong two times in the past for electing Bush based on your emotions. Please vote this time on logic and have audacity to HOPE for a new and peaceful future where our children will be safe in the real sense!
Please Democrats- don't resort to voting based upon race or gender.  We are better than that.  Obama may have lost those votes because they were soft to begin with.  And quite frabkly he has never been negative or ganged up on Hillary (the same can not be said for her or John Edwards).  Obama can't control the presses' exuberance that she might be out of the race.  And the press reacted that way not because she is a woman, but because they have never liked how her campaign treats the press.  And they love a ratings getting story.  The best thing we all can do, is make an informed vote based independently from the media.
Today something very good for Hillary Clinton happened to me in a very busy upscale part of Little Rock.  I have a Hillary 08 Bumper sticker on my car.
I am a white woman in my 40's.  I had stopped at a light and alongside me pulled up a new SUV with a good looking thirtyish black chick driving it.  She rolled her window down and was trying to get my attention.  I pushed the button and rolled my passenger side window down to see what she wanted.  She said quote"  Where did you get your bumper sticker"?  I told her to go to Hillaryclinton.com and she said great.
I truly believe Hillary can unite the country but I do not believe many African Americans want him as president.  He is arrogant and uppity and part white and that is not appealing to many in the black community. I don't want him because he is such a "Novice".  You think we got a mess with George, Inexperienced Bush, just elect Obama and we will have an even worse mess.  I read an article today that said we are all waiting to see if he is Jimmy Carter or JFK.  My bet is Jimmy Carter.
It is good news that many progressive senior statesmen and women are aligning themselves with Obama.  For the kind of change we wish to occur to actually happen, we will need the support of all progressives.  They are lining up behind Obama, to follow, not in  front of him to lead.  Obama will lead if we are willing to follow.
"BionicWoman" - You're the only one playing the gender card here. If women line up behind Clinton just because she is a woman, then those women are blinded by their gender. Millions of women are going to vote for both Clinton and Obama. Stop with this gender bs.
Pat from Boston,

I volunteered in NH and agree with your friends statements about the GOTV effort.  I was a novice and I could see problems.
