Another senator endorses Obama

Posted: Thursday, January 10, 2008 4:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) has endorsed Obama, according to the Obama campaign.

"I'm supporting Senator Barack Obama in his race for the presidency because he is in a unique position to reach across party lines and unite our country," Johnson said in release from the Obama campaign. "The problem with Washington has become the increasingly partisan nature that produces more roadblocks than results. I believe Senator Obama is a candidate of change who will bridge the partisan divide and deliver progress for our nation.

"While we are very fortunate to have a field of candidates running for President who are qualified, capable and smart, Senator Obama has already proven he can win in the heartland and has great appeal to rural Americans."

Earlier today, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) endorsed Obama and joined him at a rally in South carolina. Obama now has four senators' endorsement. So in one day, he has doubled his senatorial support. Ten senators have endorsed Clinton.

A South Dakota Democrat wants one thing: down-ticket help from the presidential candidate. A red state is rough, but it's only rougher with Hillary as the figurehead. It's the smart choice for him.
Paul - Obama gaining endorsements from Kerry and others like him is important because they will have a seat at the table, whether you or John Edwards like it or not. As much as I love John Edwards, Obama has my support exactly because he gets endorsements from ALL quarters. Obama will be the President of the United States and of the American people, not just the President of whoever has Paul's stamp of approval. This is all well within Obama's campaign message.
why is this looked at as against women? it would be saying that people vote for barack because he is half white and half black. why must this go down hill into a gender fight? i think that is so far off base. i would hope we all are better than to think like that.

isn't this about support of the candidate you believe in, not gender or race? if that is the only reason that a person is voting then they have missed the boat all together.

that is ignorant. to me that is as bad as someone saying hillary won in new hampshire because she was white and barack is black. i won't believe that kind of ugliness and i won't vote for someone because they are a woman or man.

that is utterly ridiculous and insulting to suggest to someone that should be their reason to vote. i hope we all are more intelligent than that to stoop that low.

I totally agree with your point... I am a woman... I am Super Independent…. There is nothing more satisfying than to receive something you deserve because you deserve it. Not because you feel it’s time.

I tell my daughter all the time….When you make it to the top….  I want you to make it not because you’re beautiful, not because you are a woman but because you are smart and deserving to be there......

As women, we should never want anything handed to us…. It takes the complete meaning away…..

We should keep that in mine when we vote for symbols that are not base with logic

"This makes no sense......He's an agent of change but you are all looking for him to get endorsements from the entrenched establishment, i.e. Kerry, Kennedy."

You seem to be mistaking Obama for somebody else.  Even an elected official who has been in office for years can realize that the system is broken, and can become part of the solution.  If they are sincere, they are welcome to join the campaign.  This isn't a purge, it's about unity.  I'm really not sure why the Clinton folks find it so hard to understand that.

BTW, Obama doesn't have a Kennedy endorsement. Yet.

(Side Note: it also isn't 2 to Hillary's 10.  It's 6 to 10, and I suspect that will even up soon.)

As a Black Republican I fully support Obama and respect his approach of bringing America together. Go Obama! Colorado, lets get behind CHANGE, and make it happen.
BionicWomon,

The reason Obama is getting support is that he transcends the divisive politics you just bloged about.

It is not about:
Man vs. Woman
Black vs. White
Red State vs. Blue State

It is about the UNITED states.  Man, Woman, Black, White, Democrat, Republican, Independent.  All standing united, united for change that will end the political divide.

Obama has had many opportunities to criticize Hillary.  He could go after her for failed healthcare in the 90s, or for her flip flop on education, but he doesn't because he stands for a different type of politics.  One that rises above these issues and unites america.  This is the reason many women are supporting him.  Unlike Hillary who constantly brings up her gender, Obama never brings up is race or plays the race card.  Hillary playing the gender card was offensive to most women i know, it set women back as opposed to moving them forward as equals.

OBAMA '08
Yeah, where is Ted Kennedy when you need him?  With the Kerry endorsement in place and announced in South Carolina (SERIOUSLY???  Kerry in S.C.?  Are the Obama people brain dead?) all we need is Chapaquidik Ted to come out and endorse Obama.  Yeah, that won't give the Republicans any ammo...

Hillary Clinton has more experience, better endorsements and is the only candidate who a sane, rational Democrat would vote for (other than Edwards but, he's toast).
John Kerry - didn't he lose the 2004 election! I was for the war before I was against the war. I was for Obama befoe I was against Obama.  And Bill Bradley - he didn't get the nick name dollar bill for nothing. Didn't he lose in the primaries!  And Tim Johnson - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I see that Harry Reid's son is supporting/working for Hillary Clinton in Nevada.

Hillary Clinton has taken a beating from Chris Matthews and the media and is still standing. That's one tough lady!

Obama has been referred to a souffle by George Will: pretty and pleasing, but mostly air and apt to collapse if jostled. Senator Souffle who voted "present" over 125 times, now that's change?
To This woman is against Hillary Clinton,
First of all we are in Iraq because we are fighting a war against terror. Just because Obama thinks he can make friends with terrorist and negotate away your freedom, that's not going to make that change.

Second, the reason why health care is high is because the congress mandated to hospitals that they were to treat all the illegals for free, not even considering that it takes medicine, nurses, and supplies to run a hospital, all these things cost money and when the cost of the doctor's who care for them is now being done for free, then that drives up the cost to consumers.

The reason why oil is up is because your liberal friends won't allow us to drill on our own soil which will drive the cost of oil way down, but since liberals are morons when it comes to economics, this is the B.S. we get those of us who are consumers end up suffering the most.

If you sign a mortgage contract a can't pay your house note, that is not the President's fault, that responsibility lies with you. It is the president who is using our tax dollars to bail people out of their mortgage loans because they didn't take the time to understand fully what they were doing, but to sit there and blame the president or the current administration for you signing your name to the dotted line, is ridiculous.

If you can't send you kid to college than you should have planned better for their future, to sit here and think that it's the governments job or tax payers responsibility to send your child to college doesn't make any sense. You should have a more prominent role in your child's life and take effective measures to ensure that they have a future.

Just another tip: It's the demand for oil that drives up the costs, not who the president is.

Geess people pick up an economics books and read it sometime.

I don't support Hillary or Obama and I approve of this message
To "This woman is against Hillary Clinton" - Thank you so much.  As a woman I was irritated beyond belief that Hillary cried.  i wanted to throw my TV out on the street.  It made me dislike her even more than I already did.  If she hadn't thought she was going to get her cookies tossed in New Hampshire you wouldn't have seen a tear.  That was strategy as we can see the Clinton camp plays dirty.  Is this what we want in the White House?  A spoiled brat?  I too was a huge fan of President Clinton - even after he cheated on Hillary.  But he needs to pack up his wife and her Kleenex and go home.  We need a new direction and let me tell you something "shugas" SHE AIN'T IT!
Work to take your party back, Dems! Get behind Barry and restore the legacy of the party of FDR.

If you nominate Her Hillaryness, I guarantee you'll wander in the political desert for another four years.

I bet you, All these people who are againts our next
President, who ahappened to be a woman, are all the same people who hate the Clintons ever since Bill became President of the U.S.. Just watch & see if in
November, 2008 all of you Clinton haters will have a big shock in your lives.  Sorry!
First BUSH then CLINTON then BUSH and another clinton?and it's not that she has exceptional skills.Comon AMERICA this is the land of great minds we can smell the machine oil from a distance.FIRST  the lesser of the Bushes and now i can not believe we are considering the lesser of the Clintons.what have we become.hope we can all see beyond the two piece monarchy and vote OBAMA in.WE MUST FIGHT FOR BETTER.WE MUST VOTE OBAMA.GO OBAMA the only SMART choise for PRESIDENT.
Joe from Chicago,
Barack Obama is the REAL DEAL. He has spent 11 years in elected public office, to Hillary's 6. He is genuinely concerned about our country and ALL of its citizens, black, white, latino, asian, indian, etc...
I am sure that Hillary is genuinely concerned as well. She and Bill, however, will do and say anything to get back into office.  She desperately wants the power and it showed in New Hampshire. Hats off to her, she rounded up the confused elderly women and the troubled high school dropouts to vote for her in NH. She would do well in Chicago too, getting the homeless bums to come vote in exchange for some hooch. We need a leader that can unite ALL of Us and the Clintons simply will deepen the divide. She is probably the most divisive candidate for president that I have ever witnessed.  Sorry Hillary-ites it's not going to happen for you this time.  Thank you all for your time... Thank you President Obama for your service! OBAMA 08
Okay are you Smarter than a 9yr old?  My Grandchild of 9 yrs was watching the N.H. primary when Sen. Clinton won and we listened to her victory speech. I asked my 9yr old grandchild what did she think about Sen. Clinton.  My 9yr. grandchild said that she does not like Sen. Clinton because she cries and to her Presidents don't cry and need to be tough.  She also stated that Sen. Clinton does not seem like a person anyone can trust.  Sometimes children can see things we don't at times. I vote for the 9yr old.
It's funny how the bickering in this thread is what Obama speaks against.
Kerry's on-the-ground-knowledgeable operatives have joined Obama's team. The same group of 2004 losers that will guarantee an Obama loss. Hillary should feel fortunate!
I agree with "This Woman is Against Hillary" -- she is absolutely right on, and hopefully women and every other American in other states see through Hillary's acting.  You missed one, though -- What happens when terrorists strike again in our country because the Clintons eradicate our military and intelligence agencies which they almost accomplished in Bill's term? ... will we just say, "Not to worry, we live in a terrible world, because Hillary CRIES!!!
Lynne, it goes to show that some of us have not moved past the whole color thing and that what will keep this country living in the shadows of the past. Why couldn't she just be a person asking about your bumper sticker.  This is about our country not a bumper sticker, a country that is suffering from higher gas pricess, low wages, unemployment and a war that is breaking the backs of every hard working American not matter what color to fund. This is not a woman thing or a color thing this is a people thing who is going to do the job to get us out of this mess we are in.  Hillary voted for this war we are in how many more will she vote for and how many more of our children will be lost, Hillary voted for the raise in Health Care we now endure that she promoted back when Bill Clinton was President and then she say I learned from my mistake then but how many people had to bear that mistake? How many?  It is not about a woman or color thing it is about saving this Nation.  So peel your sticker and replace it with who will save our Nation?

Today something very good for Hillary Clinton happened to me in a very busy upscale part of Little Rock.  I have a Hillary 08 Bumper sticker on my car.
I am a white woman in my 40's.  I had stopped at a light and alongside me pulled up a new SUV with a good looking thirtyish black chick driving it.  She rolled her window down and was trying to get my attention.  I pushed the button and rolled my passenger side window down to see what she wanted.  She said quote"  Where did you get your bumper sticker"?  I told her to go to Hillaryclinton.com and she said great.
I truly believe Hillary can unite the country but I do not believe many African Americans want him as president.  He is arrogant and uppity and part white and that is not appealing to many in the black community. I don't want him because he is such a "Novice".  You think we got a mess with George, Inexperienced Bush, just elect Obama and we will have an even worse mess.  I read an article today that said we are all waiting to see if he is Jimmy Carter or JFK.  My bet is Jimmy Carter.

I am a woman, I would love to vote for a woman for president.  JUST NOT HILLARY!!

"Do you mind?!?   You're messing up the coronation!"
http://blog.al.com/stantis/2007/12/messing_up_the_coronation.html

If you really look at it, she is an anti-feminist.  The only reason she's even here is because she stood by her cheatin' man.  They feed off of each other.

I would vote for a qualified woman who got the job on her own merits, NOT because her husband had the job first and gave it to her when he was done.

She has just as much experience as Obama.  BOTH are junior senators. Neither has held the office of  POTUS.  Besides, Thomas Jefferson was 33 when he wrote the Declaration of Independence.  Martin Luther  King was 26 when he led the Montgomery Boycott, Cesar Chavez was 35 when he co-founded the United Farm Workers. Even Mother Theresa was 38 when she heeded the call to help people in poverty.

Now, tell my why Barack Obama is too young to be president again??

He can't do any worse than BUSH-CLINTON-BUSH have done!!

I'm an OBAMA mama!!! OBAMA '08!!

For a person who just lost a primary, Obama sure is getting a lot of endorsements.

The Kerry endorsement also provided him with access to Kerry's list of 3 MILLION donors. Also, I just received an email from the Obama camp indicating that the day AFTER he lost NH, his website was flooded with 20,000 donations - the most ever for them in a single day - and that they have received over 83,000 donations in total in the first nine days of 2008.

Looks like Obama will have all the money he needs to fight this thing out on super tuesday.

Geeze, talk about discrimination in full bloom!!  You talk about yourself as a white WOMAN and to the other lady as a black CHICK.  You then go on to berate Mr. Obama for being part white and that the black community does not like that.  Why don't  you speak for yourself?  YOU do not like Mr. Obama because he is part black.  You are projecting your own feelings upon the black community.  How do you know how the black community feel?  Because you feel as you do, does that mean the black community does to because he is part white??  You are the epitomy of discrimination.  I went to school in Arkansas when discrimination was still at its highest levels and I saw it first hand.  It was not pretty!!  Guess people like you in Arkansas still harbor hate toward blacks.  This is 2007, get over your prjudices and grow up!!!
And I say Mr. Obama is a combination of John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, and Abraham Lincoln.
I don't know still who I will vote for, but Hillary's crying did affect me in a very profound way.  Not because she is a woman but becuase I saw her as human for the first time.  No doubt, she is a master debater but I've always wondered if she wanted to win the debate or make a difference.  I think she is good at hiding her feelings but I don't think she can act.

Janet, She affected me too. It was truly genuine emotion about HER predicament, and what she said immediately after was quite telling. If she had shed a tear over the soilders she voted to send into Iraq, that would have been a little different. I was a Clinton supporter too.

Looks like Hillary has the hyperpartisan Democrat woman age 40+ vote wrapped up. Too bad that won't translate to one single state in November.

As far as all the endorsements Hillary has - the Clinton machine isn't called "machine" for nothing. It grinds people up and spits them out. As soon as Obama starts showing the possibility that he could beat Hillary for the nomination, people are all too anxious to ditch Hillary. Fear only works when you can convince others that you have the power to back your threats up, and Hillary will be back to the Senate next January where she can't do any real harm.
77 Years of establishment and DC mentality endorsed Obama today.  He says he is the candidate of change.  I love how no one in the media is asking questions or voicing how inconsistent this is.
Please Democrats, nominate someone besides obama(no experience)and look where no experience bush got us, Billary, rather have a blind dog, Edwards(who Knows)This may be the one year I sit out the elections altogether. help America, somebody sensible run.

Too funny! who knew we all didn't think alike and have diverse lives and points of view. It is refreshing that your encounter happened in an "upscale" part of town where the good "stylish" people drive new SUV's. Heaven knows there aren't many of those "uppity" types there....They are all living on the other side of town wallowing in Hope.
If we always do......What we've always done.....We will always get....what we've alway gotten......It's time for a change.

Give me a break! I voted for Bill twice, as did my wife, and started out backing her. Her campaign saw fit to resort to politics of personal destruction and turned me off along with a substantial number of Dems. If you want to fool yourself into thinking everyone who is opposed to her is sexist or a member of a vast conspiracy of haters go right ahead.
Bill Clinton won twice with less than 50% of the vote. I voted for him both times and stood by him through that little problem he had with Congress. I want to see a democrat in the WH with a working majority on Capital Hill. Clinton, never had any ability to get other dems elected and Hillary's high negatives tell me she will not have any coat tails either. In fact, based on the early republican debates she is their best hope to energize the party.
Could we at least get the facts straight?  She didn't cry.  She got a little bit emotional.  Everyone is treating this like she had a nervous breakdown.

No, she started talking about what the race means to her and she choked up a little, showing that it MEANT A LOT to her.

Kind of like Romney and Bill Clinton tear up to show people they care about certain issues.

This article is from Dec 19th, weeks before Clinton cried:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22329566/

It talks about male politicians, specifically Romney, getting emotional, and goes on to conclude that Hillary Clinton would be crucified for it.

A few weeks later, Clinton gets a little verklempt and suddenly the media is painting it like she's bawling her eyes out and tearing at her hair.

And you -- all of you -- who are taking that as a sign of weakness from a female candidate (when from a male candidate it's a sign of his deep compassionate commitment to the American People) are being inexcusably sexist.  I've yet to see a man say that Romney's made him ashamed of his gender over getting mist-eyed.  So you "women against Clinton" need to drop this tears issue and focus on something real.  (There's plenty to dislike, actually.  You just have to look at what she has to say about her policies to find it.  I know, I know.  Research about the candidate!  Unheard of in a Presidential Election!)

More time has been spent on Clinton's nonexistent tears than on the entire GOP field in the past week.  I am disgusted beyond belief with this double-standard.
And did someone just seriously call Obama "uppity" on this thread?  Please tell me that was a parody of a racist and not a serious comment.
I cannot for the life of me understand why some women would allow themselves to be swayed by tears in this election.  This is about who should be president of the United States, not about being turned down in the try-outs for cheerleader.  How on earth people could be led into voting for Clinton out of womanly empathy, or out of pity is beyond me - and I am a woman close to Clinton's age.

Barack Obama is the best candidate in this race, regardless of race, sex, color, or what someone prefers for breakfast.  America faces a huge challenge.  Never have I known a developed country so divided.  The people of this nation need to be united in a common hope, for without that unity, it will not rise to meet its challenges, nor will its people be able to make the sacrifices necessary to survive the 21st Century.  Obama brings hope.  Not only to jaded people in my age group, but more importantly, to those young people who will be tomorrow's leaders.

Let's stop making this a gender thing.  We don't have time for distractions.  There is a nation to put back on track.
Everyone who is against Hillary Clinton because she cried, copy and past and add a number....

1...Am I against Hillary, and totally agree with these coments:What was really sad about the women’s vote in New Hampshire was that it was based on emotion and not logic.

It was emotions that lead us into the wrong war…And now it’s logic wanting us to get out…

I am so very surprised and disappointed with some of the women's from New Hampshire , once again you allowed yourselves to be manipulated by emotions… So you voted for the Clintons to be are next President because Hillary cried? This is so sad so sad…. You felt like the men were ganging up on her and because she could not handled it and broke down in a manipulated cry…..You voted for her....So you don't take your country seriously....This is not only about "YOUR" emotions, this is about everything.....

•         If your healthcare cost continued to rise, will you accept the cost and turned the other way when Hillary CRIES

•         If are soldier are not pulled from this war in Iraq ---- will you continue to let them suffer and die when Hillary CRIES

•         When your gas cost continued to rise - will you then say, the cost is worth it because Hillary CRIES

•         When you lose your home because your mortgage has become difficult to pay---- will you be okay going homeless because Hillary CRIES

•         When your income stays at a stand still, while every other cost rises ----- will you be okay with your family suffering because Hillary CRIES

•         When you can't afford to send your child to college even though the Clintons sent their daughter to Oxford University in England  (VERY EXPENSES)--- Will you then say, it's more important for their daughter to have the best education because Hillary CRIES

So tell me women of New Hampshire what do you think is going to happen if she makes it to the general election….Are you going to continue to vote on emotions…..What are you going to do if the Clintons win the presidency and once again we are bombarded with investigation after investigation and nothing in the country is getting done because her personality is so divisive that everyone roots against her.....

You essentially are giving up everything because you based your decision on emotion and not logic.....And  will  jeopardize us from taking our country back by doing so.....

The rest of the women of America rise up and be recognize..... Let show the rest of the world that this common thinking only lies in New Hampshire .....

Let show the rest of America that it is are families and welling being that comes first and not the sympathy will feel for Hillary because she CRIED.....

I was a long time Hilary Clinton supporter until I saw how really nasty and vicious she and her husband really are.  Obama is trying to heal and unite while the Clintons, their rabid supporters (i.e., Bob Johnson) and the media continue to rile up and divide Americans.  Please let us decide without interjecting your combined hatred.  Obama appears to have opened up his life for our review, and it is apparent that he also experiences that process called "evolving from a stupid child to a mature and responsible human being."  We should all be proud of showing the world that we have so many candidates from different political parties, backgrounds, classes, gender, reglisions while conducting ourselves with dignity and fair play.
