Richardson's goodbye speech

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
In his speech today announcing the end of his presidential bid, Richardson focused on what he has been able to achieve while a candidate and what he continues to hope to do as a governor and American citizen.

"Now that my time in this national campaign has come to an end, I would urge those who supported my candidacy to take a long and thoughtful look at the remaining Democrats," Richardson said in the New Mexico State Capitol. "All I ask is that you make your own independent choice with the same care and dedication to this country that you honored me during this campaign."

Wearing blue jeans and a blazer, Richardson appeared relaxed as he thanked his supporters and told his state he is returning to the job he loves. "The time has come to end my quest and come home to tackle the challenges before us in New Mexico," he said. "To all New Mexico legislatures and citizens who participate in the public process, I have a message -- I am back."

Richardson said he will not be endorsing another candidate "at this time." All he asked is that the rest of the field "not resort to personal attacks to win the nomination."

While Richardson will now be moving on, he said he is pleased with what he was able to achieve during his year-long campaign. "Despite overwhelming financial and political odds, I am proud of the campaign we waged and, most importantly, the influence we had on the issues that matter the most to the future of this country," he said to a standing ovation.

"A year ago, we were the only campaign calling for the removal of all our troops within the year's time from Iraq. We were the only campaign calling for a complete reform of education including the scrapping of No Child Left Behind. And we were the campaign that was the most aggressive in clean energy and the most ambitious standards in reducing global warming. Now all the remaining candidates have come to our point of view."

Richardson also spoke kind words of his former competitors, talking about Biden's "passion in intellect" and Clinton's "poise in the face of adversity [which is] matched only by her lifetime of achievement." Richardson also called Dodd "the epitome of selfless dedication to public service," Edwards "a singular voice for the most downtrodden forgotten among us," Obama "a bright light of hope and optimism at a time of great national unease," and Kucinich "a man of great decency and dedication who will faithfully soldier on no matter how great the odds."

And what will Richardson do next? Continue his international missions for advancing democracy, ride his horse and said he will "work hard to make Tom Udall the next U.S. Senator from New Mexico" -- in case anyone was wondering if Richardson was thinking about the campaign.

I'm an Obama supporter but I've got to take my hat of to Gov. Richardson. Whoever wins the nomination, Richardson would be a great VP.

Also, after venting our anger at the NH outcome, I think that we Obama supporters should follow his example and remain above the fray and quit trying to tear Hilary down. I'm still praying that Obama comes out on top, but if Hilary wins, I'll vote for her. Obama will head back to the Senate with a huge, enthusiastic following and eternal gratitude from many for inspiring us to rediscover what's so amazing about the US of A.

Gov. Richardson for VP...he is the epitome of class!
Good bye!
Thank you Governor Richardson for shedding light on the most important issues facing our nation, and presenting the solutions.  Sadly, we are now stuck with the Obama/Clinton show that I've been sick of since last January.  That being the case I have advice for the "leading" candidates.

Senator Obama--drop the fake southern preacher accent.  It makes you look like more of a fraud than you already are.  If you had taken a long hard look at yourself, and your experience, you would know that you are in no position to run this country; not in its current state.  I respect your message.  We need to move the country forward.  But there is a lot to undo from 8 years of King Shrub.  You haven't shown me anything but platitudes.  Platitudes will not end the war, restore the Constitution, clean our environment, or revitalize our economy.  Come up with something substantive that actually works because if you get the nomination, and all you've got are words, we're screwed in November.

Senator Clinton--don't tell us what you think everyone wants to hear.  Tell the truth.  Share your ideas.  Show us what you intend to do to get us out of the Shrub mess at home and abroad.  The big joke about you is that your speeches mostly sound like, "I believe what the American people believe...as soon as I find out what that is."  Show us conviction.  Show us truth.  Give us a plan.  The nation is a shambles because of the Shrub.  Show me how you're going to fix it.

Senator Edwards--if you're going to fight the greedy corporate interests that are strangling the middle class, the first thing you might want to do is divest your money from those off shore corporations you keep railing against.  I'm not going to vote for a do as I say, not as I do candidate.  You have turned a light on what is wrong.  Now walk the walk.

Governor Richardson, you were the first presidential candidate that I truly believed in, one who would not have been the lesser of two evils in November, but someone who could really lead this country with integrity, wisdom, and a little humor.  The lack of attention paid to your campaign by the media, idiot bloggers like the morons here at FirstRead, etc was your downfall, and should be a cautionary tale for anyone who actually cares about who they vote for.

Take a look at who the media is ignoring.  Chances are they are the candidates we need to support as the media only cares about what sells, what comes in a marketable package, what's hot to them.  What the hell do they know?  They pay more attention to polls than the human voice.  They care more about how they look and their ratings than the state of our democracy.  I keep hearing how we have to get our democracy out of the hands of the corrupt interests that drive the greed machine.  As a teacher, I know the chuckleheads that write this obtuse blog make more money than I, or the people I work with.  While we're making all these grandiose changes to our country, let's change that too.  Your minds and hearts should have greater influence than the idiots at NBC, CNN, FOX, etc.  I hope I live to see the day when that happens.
Bill, we'll barely miss you!

A more important question: whatever possessed you to even consider running in the first place?
I am Republican Obama supporter who appreciates the great service Governor Richardson has done for this country. My sister was a public school teacher in N.M and she raved about the work Gov. Richardson did to improve the educational system in N.M.. Gov. Richardson also brought more attention to the issue of ending the Iraq mess.
This country needs to work towards improving, both internally and internationally. Richardson should join Obama as V.P. and bring his many benefits to the Obama campaign.
As an unhappy Republican I can fully back Obama and the change that his campaign stands for. The negative memories of Hillary blaming Republicans for Bill's inappropriate actions are still fresh in my mind. This country is ready for a change away from a broken government and Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is not a change or an improvement.
Thanks

i have all ways wondered why did america vote for bush twice ?well the answer to that one was in n.h people voted for a politician who cried on how tuff things were getting on the trail.no wonder candidates like richardson dont stand a chance.please women out their this is not the time to vote based on emotions or make up,thatcher ,gandie and bhutto did not cry when things were getting though, this is taking the whole women rights issues back in the 50"s. did clinton apologies or cry to all those mothers who have there kids killed in iraq? well i guess we all know the answer to that one she is one of those sentors who sent these kids to go die in the desert.just imagine what all the nut jobs out there thought, seeing a would be president crying.they are more ways hillary can show her personal side but crying shouldnt be one of them .
Governor, I have enjoyed your passion and sense
of humor!!  You would have made a great
President! If you ever ran again, you would
certainly have my vote...
Thank you Governor Richardson for your national voice on important issues and the great service you have provided our country.<B>

I am a Hillary Clinton supporter but ditto & cudos to Natasha B of New Haven CT!   No matter which Democrat candidate wins the white house ALL Americans win!
Jane, watch the stupid clip before you comment.  Clinton was NOT CRYING.  She was slightly choked up.  "Verklempt", so to speak.  Lots of politicians are when talking patriotism.  Hell, I've seen combat vets get misty-eyed when talking about service to their country.
A President named Bill. Like that would ever happen again.
I met Bill Richardson in New Hampshire in the 90's.  He was articulate bright and brilliant.  He did not change has not waivered and in short has remained my choice for a top leader. His vision for this country and the world was right on then, knowing full well how wrongly we were headed down the trail of destruction regarding our hopeless and abismal knowledge of the Arab world.  But mostly his frank, honest and to the pointed truth saying is what I was planning to vote for in this years Maine Primary.  Sorry that you dropped out, you are a winner for just trying.  Good show.
