First thoughts: Hillary Meets the Press

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** Hillary Meets the Press: Clinton’s retool, it seems, is now complete after New Hampshire: She has become Hillary The Accessible. Yesterday, there she was canvassing with voters. Then she held a press avail. And more evidence of the more accessible Clinton? She's appearing on Meet the Press with Tim Russert this coming Sunday for the full hour -- the first time EVER she has agreed to sit down with Russert for the entire show. The program this Sunday will originate from Columbia, SC. Critics and cynics, of course, are probably thinking this: Why did it take so long? And why didn’t she do it before Iowa, a state that demands accessibility? But New Hampshire delivered her a second chance, and she's trying to seize it.

*** Fred’s not dead, baby… Fred’s not dead -- but he does have his own chopper: In last night’s GOP debate from South Carolina, Thompson was funny, biting, and energetic. It was easily his smoothest performance, but it wasn't necessarily presidential -- it was Jack Cafferty-esque or Paul Harvey-like. In short, he sounded like a smart (and cranky) pundit. By the way, Thompson did McCain a big favor by softening up Huckabee. Speaking of Huck, he was more on the defensive last night than any debate we can remember. It seemed like he was taking incoming from numerous candidates, particularly Thompson. He handled himself pretty well, but the message to conservatives was clear: He may be a social conservative, but he's no small-government economic conservative. (Then again, perhaps in this kind of economic climate, small-government conservatism isn’t a winner…) Still, give Huckabee credit: He answered the criticisms with his usual wit and probably did well on the likeability front.

VIDEO: NBC's Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on Fred Thompson's performance in last night's GOP debate.

*** Mitt targets McCain: Romney did well early on, though there seemed to be an air of desperation in his answers. He quickly targeted McCain, the man standing in the way of victory in Michigan. Romney gave one of the best change rationales we’ve ever heard him give. Why did it take Romney nearly a year to become this guy? Meanwhile, McCain was fine -- a typical sober performance. But he needs a bit more energy; there wasn't the same fire as we saw in previous debates. Giuliani did better than he did at the last two debates. He was more involved, but it is interesting to watch the candidates and moderators ignore Rudy somewhat. And then there was Ron Paul. Why didn't Fox stick to its guns and keep him out? He was a distraction for a good portion of the debate and took away from the candidates who have a real shot at the nomination. Then again, we know what it's like to have our comment boards and email boxes flooded with upset Paul supporters.

*** The GOP swings and misses on the economy: It also needs to be mentioned that the first 20 minutes of the debate was not good for the entire Republican Party. All of the candidates struggled on the economy -- an issue that is becoming more and more important as we head into November. Their answers may have been fine for a primary audience, but don't expect swing voters or indie voters to like what these guys said. They tried to sound in touch, but their collective hesitance for government involvement explains why voters tend to want Democrats in economic down times -- that's when folks look to government. The middle class doesn't like government involved when the economy is good.

*** Gloria Molina and Jim Clyburn: Get to know the name Gloria Molina. She is a Los Angeles County supervisor, and she had endorsed Bill Richardson. Now that Richardson is out of the race, First Read called her office yesterday to see if she had made up her mind if she would be backing Clinton or Obama, and her office replied that she’s still mulling her options. How Molina goes could be a key sign of how other Richardson backers -- and the Latino vote in California in general -- could break. And also don’t miss today’s New York Times piece, which notes that Jim Clyburn -- the biggest Dem get in South Carolina -- is angry with some of the things the Clintons said in New Hampshire, particularly when they referenced MLK Jr. Is Clyburn leaning Obama’s way? It wouldn't be a big issue for the Clintons to lose Clyburn's support to Obama. But if he endorses him and then also lectures the Clintons on their treatment of Obama, that would sting.

*** On the trail: Clinton is in California, where she gives a speech on the economy; Edwards is in South Carolina; Giuliani heads back to Florida; Huckabee and Hunter, and Kucinich are in Michigan; McCain campaigns in South Carolina; Obama, in Nevada, rallies with the Culinary Workers and later holds a town hall there; and Romney stumps in Michigan.

I'm with Cathy in Upstate NY on this one. I won't watch Chris anymore and Olberman is starting to get on my nerves. What to watch... all that's on at that time is Lou Dobbs and that just makes my blood pressure go up and I blocked Fox on my cable box. Guess it's going to be the NewsHour on PBS. We are in such a mess and I don't see anybody but Hillary with the guts to do anything about it. And yes, I'm probably the only democrat in the Florida panhandle. Still like Joe S and Mika... at least they give everybody an even chance and don't make snide comments.
I hope Tim Russert calls Hillary on her statement that "If you vote democrat, you will have lower oil prices"

Bet there are people in New Hampshire that wish it was true about now.
Response to Dee L, Toledo, OH:

<<How unfortunate for the Democrats that they bicker amongst themselves while the Republicans solve the problems of the country.
Dee L., Toledo OH (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 11:04 AM)>>

Now THAT'S hysterical - what cave have you been living in for the past 7 years???

HILLARY '08
How unfortunate for the Republicans that the current Republican occupant of the White House and his lapdog Congress of five years running...did absolutely nothing to "solve the problems of the country."  Arguably all the problems of this Nation under the total failed George W Bush have worsened to the point where all the GOP candidates have adopted the mantra of "change".  Of course...change will only come when the GOP is removed from control of the White House.
How unfortunate that Dee L., Toledo must have been living in a cave for the last 7 years and has only been watching Fox News since emerging from that cave.
Stop: name one major hotel chain that doesn't provide in room pay-per-view porn?  It's disgusting, but if the patrons demand it, most businesses will comply.  Personally, I'm in agreement that this shouldn't be there at all.  I think it's disgusting. But if families are worried about it, they can ask for it to be blocked when they check in.  My husband and I do this at every hotel/motel we stay at, even though neither of us would ever choose to watch such filth.  It's a sad commentary on America, but porn (soft or hard) is a HUGE industry in America, and what the Marriott corporation is doing is 'good' business practices (providing access- albeit paid- to the "services" that patrons demand).  Sad, but true.  Perhaps Romney, with his business knowledge, also recognizes it, but doesn't like it anymore than I do.  Perhaps that is why he is focusing on the children/family needs in America.  Families don't sit down and watch this garbage together.  If people who watch this junk spent more time with their families, there would be less demand for the smut.

Buck, thanks for humoring me... as soon as I read this article- especially the part about Paul- I predicted a reply just like yours.   Maybe Paul has a chance... but it's a tiny one.
"What has Hillary done in return for the 27 years of living off of the taxpayer's? can any Hillary supporter answer this?"

YES WE CAN, and just to name "a couple":
* Hillary lobbied HARD for benefits for the victims of 911 and their families, as well as for the cleanup workers at ground zero who became ill.
* She introduced legislation that would recognize veterans of the cold war era as having served their country during time of conflict, thus enabling them to have access to benefits they currently don't have. In fact, you can go to her Senate website and look up the list of bills that Hillary has drafted. It's a long one.
http://clinton.senate.gov/
Now let US ask YOU a question;
What is Obama going to change, how is he going to change it, and what is it that he "can" do?
You might as well tell us because all he does is repeat these words without ever saying what his plan is.
...and what has he done to qualify himself to be President of The United States?
Answer; NOTHING!

NO-BAMA Can't
Yes, Hillary Can!

It is encouraging to learn that Hillary has agreed to meet Russert for "Meet the Press" for Sunday talk show.  Voters will be watching not just Hillary but Russert too. I hope he leaves his bias against her at home. Better yet, have Tom Brokaw talk with him before he interviews her. Also tell Chris Mathews to leave Russert alone.

Sounds more like The _National_ Enquirer...
Got anything to back it up? Who did he say it to? When did he say it?
Dear, Dee L. of Toledo, republicans solve problems?

How unfortunate that we took our eye off of Osama Bin Ladin to "get" Saddam.

How unfortunate that the flowers and candy never appeared in Iraq.

How unfortunate that we did not have the medical facilities for our injured vets clean and ready.

How unfortunate that the tax cuts have done nothing for working people.

How unfortunate that George Bush cried twice at the holocaust museum and not in our country or for our vets.

How unfortunate that Chinese toys poison our children, kill our pets and provide steel for the southern fence.

How unfortunate that Jerry Bremmer became the
de-facto King of Iraq for a while.

How unfortunate that Donald Rumsfeld did not listen to the generals in our military and kept them from the
President so that he would be the only one to run the war.

How unfortunate that the Defense department and State continued to fight amongst themselves to see who would comeout on top during the war.
I could go on but it would be unfortunate to use up all the space on this thread.
The argument can work both ways and our side has more real ammunition. See you in the general election, we dems are fired up while your party continues to play 'who is the most conservative and real republican'. Gotta laugh at that!
The Clinton campaign has the press between a rock and a hard place.  I have never seen anything like this.

I will look forward to Tim Russert's interview on Sunday to see if the pressure causes him to back down, which would be very disappointing. How do you do your job for the American people and avoid creating momentum for Hillary Clinton who rallies all of her disenfranchised female supporters to vote against the male establishment, not on the issues?

The Clinton's have managed to elevate manipulation to an art form.  I am eagerly awaiting the backlash.
"And then there was Ron Paul. Why didn't Fox stick to its guns and keep him out?"

I don't know why I subscribe to this junk. He's raised more money than the other Republicans and has performed similar to Rudy. What's the criteria for excluding him? Should Rudy be excluded too?

Also, he's the only real Republican (read: traditional ). Everyone else is just the typical war-loving big-spending neo-con that make up the current party. Our message is that it's time to take the party back to it's roots - watch out were coming!

I always watch "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer."  Usually, they give a news summary and then more indept reporting on some of the major issues.  Also, they usually try to present both sides of an issue.
I know they are said to have a liberal bias, but all in all, I think the provided fairly balanced coverage of the day's events.
HOW CAN ANY ONE IN HIS RIGHT MINE VOTE FOR HILLERY,  IF SHE CRY OVER NOTHING WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN A WORLD CRISIS, WHEN YOU NEED A COOL HEAD.  CRYING AND PUTTING ON A SHOW ABOUT HER HUSBAND IS NOT WHAT THIS COUNTRY IS READY FOR.  SHE HAS NO TRAINING FOR NONE OF THIS.
Becky: I'm with Cathy in Upstate NY on this one. I won't watch Chris anymore and Olberman is starting to get on my nerves.

It is extremely important that we not listen to anyone that disagrees with how we think. Any opinions that are not in line with our own should be either disregarded or ignored. Any one that disagrees with our opinion should be marginalized.

How can we ever have diversity in this world until we all agree on the same things?
"...NBC better order extra kleenex. Between her propensity to now cry at the drop of a hat and her perceived view that Russert doesn't like her, the weather service may need to issue flood warnings in SC. ..."

Sounds awful cynical and negative to me Mike.
I thought you Obama-Rama-Ding-Dongs were supposed to be full of hope and positive energy?
Why such a nasty, mean spirited, vitriolic, hate filled commentary about a fellow Democrat? (Or, are you one of the independents trying to shove Obama down the Democratic Party's throat?)
Mike, can you answer a couplke fo questions for me? (Just quick ones)
What is it, that Obama "can" do?
What is he going to change, and how is he going to change it?
I keep hearing those rhetorical words from your candidate, but he never explains what his plan is.
Maybe you can tell us, lord knows he won't.

NO-BAMA Can't
Yes HILLARY Can!

Dear Becky, Pensacola, FL,

All we can do is hope that the media now realizes that there is a growing backlash against them for their, shall I say, lack of objectivity? Also, unlike other Dems, I actually watch FOX because I like to hear what the other side is saying. And let me tell you that there are a lot of conservative voices on FOX that treat Senator Clinton with a lot more respect than the mainstream or liberal media. I have heard many FOX pundits say in the last week that while they don't like Clinton's policy agenda, they think that the media has treated her unfairly and that this has even started republican women saying that if the media continues to pile on Hillary that they will vote for her just to spite the media. One reporter on FOX yesterday said that NBC reporters ought to wear cheer leading costumes since they overtly cheer for Obama at the expense of Clinton. And Bill O'reily has called out Chris Matthews for his mean sprit attacks on Clinton all this past week.
I watched Hillary Clinton throughout New Hampshire, and watched the pride build in the eyes of my wife and my daughter.  Hillary Clinton has touched the wellspring of strength in American women, and a lot of men as well.  She has worked twice as hard as any candidate listening and then articulating the issues.  Hillary Clinton for President and Barack Obama for Vice President would be a great ticket.
5-to-1 Russert rolls over for her ...

JR: [I don't get it. The country is going down the tubes. The middle class can not afford to heat their homes if they still have on. Can't afford to send their kids to college. Can't afford health care and medicine. Can bearly afford gas to go to work.]

>> The middle class can not afford to heat their homes

And yet 99.9% of them do. Very few need help. Those that do have issues manage to work it out with their power company. Global warming should help in the long run.

>> Can't afford to send their kids to college

And yet, the colleges are full. Many colleges turn people away.

>> Can't afford health care and medicine.

And yet, most do, or choose not to (you know that pro-choice thing the Democrats are always harping on). Also, most of the uninsured are illegals.

>> Can bearly afford gas to go to work

And yet the highways are full. Record numbers of people traveling during the holidays this year.

Now Hillary wants to have a $70 billion mortgage bail out package. Mostly to bail out people that made bad decisions when they bought their homes. Anyone ever wonder how she's going to pay for it?

>> I don't get it.

Truer words.  Truer words.

That's illuminating. And why would it be a gimme for Democrats to win? Oh, because, the American people are displeased with the way Republicans have led the country these last seven years?

Because Amy dearest. The Republicans have some clue about what is going on, but that's eons ahead of the Democrats, who have no clue.

OMG!!

IT'S KICK HILLARY TIME AGAIN.

Since the presidential campaign has officially "kicked" off, the media and the pundits officially "kicked" Hillary.  She has been ransacked, savaged, attacked, ridiculed, kicked, punched, spit on, I'll spare a more visceral aspect of another bodily function, that they have done to her... The viciousness that the media has gone after Hillary with, is really unparalleled in any presidential campaign in my memory.  Just the day before and the day of the actual primary, "media pundits" were busy writing her obituary. Even Chris Matthews gave her a hug, as if to say, too bad old girl, I know you wanted it, but you can't come up, his reference to the crypt... And then, the loving farewell pinch on the cheek he gave her, which was meant to say, "well, we won't have Hillary Clinton to kick around anymore."

Well guess what? **SHE BEAT YOU ALL** with your polls, your bright lights, and all your expert pundits. The Media got it wrong... so now "the media" wants to play the race card, to justify a colossal misjudgment.  MSNBC First Read, was almost apologetically telling it's readers. "It's those pesky women, yup, they done did it to us... It's all their fault, they played the sexist card, if those women would have just stayed home, (and not voted like they shoulda.) Then everything MSNBC, Fox, and CNN, said, would have come true, just like "they" said it was a gonna be, and should be...  Folks that girl is tough, she is no light weight by any stretch of the imagination.  After taking the beating she has taken, and, pushing back a few tears, and then delivering the Cou de Graw to her critics and political foes alike, you have to admire her. You can call her names, and talk about all the rest, but she has the heart, spirit, tenacity and just plan old bull dog toughness, of a champion. This coupled with a command of the issues, She is a formidable foe, Obama has his work cut out for him...

That's a strong dose of reality, with out the "bubble gum hyperbole" of "I'm gonna change things from Pampers, all the way to Huggies."  Or maybe it's changing Edwards for Kerry? There are so many changes going on there... I'm having trouble keeping up with them all.  But I'm sure that Edwards needs to quit, "begging" Obama for a [VP] spot. The chronicity of Edwards "honking" about the future verses past, sounds like a flock of overhead flying geese. He ran for [P] four years ago, and he was the Dem. [VP] pick *four years ago,* and now he is {once again} begging for the "old job."  At this point I'd say he loves the past...

Did anyone hear the short speech that Kerry gave at the Obama endorsement?  It sounded hollow and superficial.

Obama's mantra of change, and a uniter, has been effective, (it's not working for Edwards, and certainly not Kerry)  but it's Achilles tendon is believability....  Embracing "failed" political elements of the past, is the first real blunder I have seen of the Obama camp.  Of course no man is an Island, or woman either, for that matter.  But at this point, Obama seems to be cultivating the "exact same" baggage that the Clinton camp has wisely started to jettison.  We have all heard the saying and please, I am only "speaking figuratively" here, that "one man's trash is another man's treasure."  But "failed" past baggage, can only be worse... than "winning" past baggage.  This is a big mistake for Obama and camp, I am really surprised they didn't see it...
Again, I just can't believe how Democrats are just lining up to bash the Clintons.  The man had a 75% approval rating at the end of his presidency.  Hillary won her re-election in the Senate with 70% of the vote.  There were some of you on this post who claimed the woman who asked Hillary the question that made her emotional, was a plant.  Except the woman voted for Obama.  Funny, how none of you stepped up to apoplogize for that.  You just moved on to some other form of bashing.  This is a sad day for Democrats.  Please, go ahead and recount the NH votes.  I expect apologies to Hillary from Kucinich when it turns out the count was right.  But I'm sure Obama supporters will say the people who recounted the votes were for Hillary.  It's a sad day for Democrats.  That's all I can say.

What's even sadder is you had Chris Matthews trying to say that Democrats in NH were racist and that's why they voted for Hillary.  God forbid, the 25%-35% of undecideds, could not have voted for Hillary, because the media said they shouldn't.  Shame on Kucinich, shilling for Obama.  Shame!  If Obama had any class, he would step up and say, there doesn't need to be a recount and I believe my fellow democrats. Sad, sad, day

The problem is, Bill is now alienating some of the VERY people that comprised that 75% of the nation that liked him when he left office. He's coming off as a pompous ass these days in his holier-than-thou cavalier attitude that was NEVER present during his days in office, even with the Republicans looking to throw him out.

SHE IS NOT BILL. I would venture a guess that a lot of the people that are supporting her are doing so knowing full well that Bill would be back in the White House. He can't serve again. It won't automatically transport you back to the glory days of the 1990s when things were better.

We are bashing them because they think the electorate is stupid and will vote for them simply because of their last name and their sense of entitlement, especially hers. Besides, she is so hated by the Republicans, her battles with Congress would make the Arab/Israeli conflict look like a pillow fight. And you thought the government did nothing now...
Doesn't there seem to be a double standard here?  If the other candidates were scrutinized the way Clinton has been, I think voters would be much more focused on issues rather than all of this minutia.  Isn't it nice that Dems are still letting the Repubs talking points of the ninties influence them instead of taking the time to truly educate themselves about the candidates.  I'm glad the voters of New Hampshire put the mainstream media and all of the pundits in their place.

Oh please. It isn't "Republican talking points" or even Democratic ones, but American ones. We want a change in a new direction. We're tired of the same old tired story of Washington and nothing getting done, ever. This is the first real chance to do something about it in forever. Hillary has more corporate strings attached to her than Dick Cheney and Dubya combined. When something other than the people are running the government, nothing gets done because it can't. Hillary would end up keeping the old guard in place because she's up to her neck in debt to them for funding her campaign.
How about some substance, instead of just style?
Dee in Toledo writes: "How unfortunate for the Democrats that they bicker amongst themselves while the Republicans solve the problems of the country."

Are you for real?  The Republicans have been in power for the last seven years Dee.  They are the cause of our problems.

1.  Bush sold us a war in Iraq and what do we have to show for it?  $800 billion and counting.  Nearly 4,000 American dead; another 25,000 American wounded.  More than 150,000 Iraqis dead; probably 5 times that number wounded; 2 million Iraqis displaced.  No weapons of mass destruction.  Now we are arming the Sunnis (much like we armed the Taliban).  Don't blame this on the Democrats Dee.

2.  After six years in Afghanistan we have a resurgent Taliban and an increasing US presence.  We have yet to capture Mullah Omar or Osama Bin Laden.  Don't blame this on the Democrats Dee.  Blame it on the incompetence of the Bush administration.  Rumsfeld insisted on minimal troop deployments in Afghanistan at the outset of the war and we have been paying the price ever since (He made the same ignorant mistake in Iraq).  We had Bin Laden surrounded at Tora Bora and let him get away.  It was an often repeated scenario where we had to rely heavily on local warlords who allowed the Taliban and al Quada to get away.

3.  A decline in America's world standing and influence.  Don't blame this on the Democrats Dee.  Immediately after 9-11, the world was united against terrorism and stood with the US.  The Bush administration squandered that good will with its unilateralism.  Iraq was the final blow following our rejection of the Kyoto Agreement, our refusal to join the World Court, and our insistence in going forward with SDI.  We now find it increasing difficult to get our staunchest allies to support our foreign policy objectives.  We are increasingly seen as the bad guys in the eyes of the world.  Human torture, rendition, Guantanomo, the suspension of habeas corpus have all contributed to our moral decline.

4.  The national debt is now $9.2 trillion.  We can't afford to fix social security, health care or our deteriorating infrastructure.  Don't blame this on the Democrats Dee.  When Bill Clinton left office in 2001, the national debt was approximately $5.8 trillion.  It's nearly doubled under Bush!!  When Clinton left office the federal government was in a position to start retiring some of the national debt.  He left us with budget surpluses his last few years in office.  Today we are paralyzed.  We can't afford to fix anything.  Our futures are mortgaged to the Chinese.  The dollar is worth a fraction of what it used to be just 7 years ago.  When Bush took office, the dollar was worth more than a Euro.  I think it took something like .90 cents to buy a euro.  Today it takes $1.47 to buy a euro. The Canadian dollar is now on a par with the US dollar.  I don't know if that was ever the case in my entire life!!!

5.  Our dependence on foreign oil is increasing and the price of oil recently topped out at $100 a barrel.  Don't blame this on the Democrats Dee.  Bush and the republicans refuse to promote our national interests and instead promote the interests of big oil.  It took democratic control of Congress to raise the CAFE standards in this country.  Bush had an opportunity to demonstrate leadership after 9-11.  America was willing to make sacrifices to further the nation's interest.  Instead of telling Detroit to build more fuel efficient cars or telling America to buy more fuel efficient cars he told us to go shopping.  That was the big sacrifice he asked of Americans.  Indulge yourselves America.  Go shopping.  Buy yourselves a Hummer.  He brought us into two wars with no plan on how to pay for them.  In the meantime we keep sending our dollars overseas to buy Chinese goods and foreign oil.  Bush insisted on tax cuts for the wealthy instead of asking America to bear some of the financial burden for the wars.  That's not leadership Dee.  It doesn't quite square with the sacrifices that FDR asked of the American people during World War II.

All of these problems were created or exacerbated by the current Bush Administration.  So please, don't blame the Democrats Dee.  You need a serious reality check.  Oh and here's another thing for you to consider Dee.  The Republicans can't solve these problems and they never will.  The only thing they can do is deflect attention from them by laying the blame on others.

To StopWatchingFoxNews-

OK, so you say you will vote for whoever the Democratic nominee is.  I would like to see you write this sentence then:

I, as a core Democrat, will support Barack Obama in the upcoming presidential election if he is the Democratic Nominee.

If he does, it's only to nail her at the debate. I think she will be VERY careful with her answers given that he will be co-moderating the debate with Brian Williams. I do think she will say something that comes back to bite her at the debate and give Russert and also Obama and Edwards ammo to come after her. They will not be as aggressive, but they will make sure that it stands out all through the evening.

I THOUGHT BILL CLINTON WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT, TIM. WHY IS HILL GOING ON MEET THE PRESS AND NOT BILL CLINTON

BILL CLINTON 08 NOT!!!!!!!!!!
I hope Hillary is not making a mistake, Russert is looking for more 20 second sound bites to use against her, and will have no compunction in quoting her out of context. As Dan Abrams pointed out on his show last night the media hate Senator Clinton.
Would someone tell me why we should NOT elect Ron Paul? The rest with Richardson out and Kucinich low in the polls seem to be talking crazy talk about our military adventures in the Middle East. Additionally, no one else seems to understand the problems with the economy, inflation, and out of control deficit spending. One can not talk about tax cuts without talking about cutting spending. We have a $9 trillion debt that must be paid so we can afford Social Security and Medicare. The interest payments will eat us alive when we begin to fight inflation with higher Federal Reserve bank rates. And we must stop inflation or everyone's life savings will go down the tubes, along with our middle class, like what has happened to the middle class in most countries south of our border. And do not forget National Health Insurance, which is coming down the tracks right at us, unless Republicans begin to understand the seriousness of runaway inflation. And start educating the country. The Democrats will sure not fight inflation like Volcker and Reagan did!
Please vote Ron Paul and save the country from bankruptcy abroad and at home!

Hating her is perhaps a tad over the top.  She is  an amazing and gifted human being and a person of great achievement over many years.

She is also a most unpleasant person to be around.
She is vile when angry, which is a great deal of the time.  She is just rude and dismissive when she is feeling good.

Hating her is bad for your heart.

Try voting for Obama to neutralize the anger. He is all the good stuff above and the real deal besides...

2. A disdain for Clinton.
Why?
Can you possibly please report the facts and the news, and keep personal views and opinions to yourself.
People really don't care what Matthews or Russert personal think. They want facts.
Hats off to Abrams for at least being a fair and equal journalist, #1
Maybe Fox has it right about MSNBC.

For the first, 2nd, and final time: If this story were true, don't you believe that:

1) Mr. Matthews would be off the air
2) That this would be a larger story and not just be libelous fodder on an internet blog?

Seriously, just because most of the country dislikes your candidate, you'll attach yourselves to any little morsel that shows the media is biased against her to gain sympathy and votes for her. It won't work. We will dislike her, not because Chris Matthews or Tim Russert or Rush Limbaugh tell us to, but because we know who she is and what she stands for.
Francis, you are correct. Hillary will be the winner. Obama is in la la land.
5-to-1 Russert rolls over for her ...

Is it a news reporters job to "roll over someone?"

Dot, Illinois

=============

It is the interviewers job to hold the interviewee accountable for their claims and actions.

For example, and as start, when Hillary states she has 35 years of experience, Russert should request that she describe her three greatest accomplishments during that time period. When Hillary stumbles in describing even one accomplishment, Russert should spend the remaining time on allowing Hillary to back down from that statement.
Clinton just step into the middle of the immigration debate. While at a camaign stop, a man yelled that his wife is an illegal, and Clinton shouted back "No woman is illegal". She went on a bit, but basicly her position is to grant unconditional amnesty to all and every illegal immigrant, but especially women. (cite: http://www.lvrj.com/news/13702902.html )

Now, especially since we're entering into a recession where we don't,even know the number of illegal workers, but "best gues" estimates place them at somewhere between 22 and 38 million, we don't know what they cost, but based on analysis of state and feederal budgets costs for 2006, the bets guess is around TWO tillion dollars a year, we do know they have wrecked employmnet for mllions of American, but especially for the black working poor - they take jobs in the manufacturing, forestry, constrction, and every other unskilled and semi-skilled trade. The DOL reports that few than 500,000 of the millions of illegal workers take jobs in the agricultural sector. Most take exisitng jobs *from* Amercian workers.  I can't for people to start noticing that Cliton has just jumped into the middle of the cultural wars - she's now on record as pro-gay marriage, pro "special rights" for lesbians, for quite radical amnesty for illegals (she seems to want to grant automatic citizenship to them). Keep tuned! Clinton and her minions have aleady been caught in the racist tinged mailings and comments in forums all over the web against Obama. As a racial minority, I cannot imagine any self respoecting African Amercian voting Democratic, much less for Clinton.

[[The GOP swings and misses on the economy: It also needs to be mentioned that the first 20 minutes of the debate was not good for the entire Republican Party. ]]

All these Pub losers have tied themselves to  the sinking Bush economy and they all deserve to sink with it. People are tired of hearing about the "magic of the market place," which magically transfers the money of the working and middle class into the pockets of Bush's piratical corporate cronies.

I'm beginning to doubt that even  phony Gulf-of-Tonkin type war scares like the one the Pentagon manufactured recently in the Persian Gulf will save their nominee. They'll have to do some pretty serious swift-boating, war-mongering, and voter suppression to beat the Dem candidate, whether it's Clinton or Obama.

Dear, jerry/corpus christi texas you wrote: "Now I am waiting for her to go on Hannity and Combs or the O'reiley factor....That will be the toughest test of her campaign....But I doubt she is qualified to take that test right now...."

Do you actually watch Bill O'reiley? Because I do and as it turns out Mr. O'reiley has been very fair to senator Clinton. In fact, in the last week he has come to her defense saying that not only is the media piling on Mrs. Clinton, but that NBC has lost all of its credibility because the network is squarely behind Obama in the democratic primary. In fact, Mr. O'reiley even took Chris Matthews to task for being so overly disrespectful and biased against Senator Clinton. The writing is on the wall: There are a significant amount of voters that will vote for Clinton as a protest against the like of Matthews and NBC if they do not begin to show more objectivity. If you don't believe me, just look at NH.
Rob, Phoenix, AZ (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 12:06 PM)

NH had absolutely ZERO to do with NBC, Chris Matthews, Tim Russert or any other talking head on the network. It had to do with 2 things: The debate Saturday night and then her meltdown Monday. She played the gender card perfectly for the old bags in that state that, if it weren't 60 and sunny, would have never left the comfort of their homes to go vote for her.

HILLARY '08
Paul, NY,NY (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 12:20 PM)

Now, see, even Hillary and Obama supporters found something to agree on!
"What has Hillary done in return for the 27 years of living off of the taxpayer's? can any Hillary supporter answer this?"
Rick,ky (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 10:13 AM)

YES WE CAN, and just to name "a couple":
* Hillary lobbied HARD for benefits for the victims of 911 and their families, as well as for the cleanup workers at ground zero who became ill.
* She introduced legislation that would recognize veterans of the cold war era as having served their country during time of conflict, thus enabling them to have access to benefits they currently don't have. In fact, you can go to her Senate website and look up the list of bills that Hillary has drafted. It's a long one.
http://clinton.senate.gov/
Now let US ask YOU a question;

J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 12:43 PM)

That's nice, J. The question asked for _27_ years, not just the 7 she's been in the Senate. Now, can you give us things she's done in the 20 years prior to going to the Senate?
I miss the days when reporters and journalists reported the news.  Now it seems they are more in the business of making the news and convincing us on when, how, and what we are to think.
How can I believe in a candidate who didn't even know her voters, i.e. New Hampshire. Her immediate surrogates were in full panic mode right before the polls closed ready to bail on the plan. Hillary just doesn't have what it takes to lead the Free World given how she reacted once Barack got the Iowa bounce. America needs real leaders, not the cosmetic/polarizing type like the Clintons.
Just Checking [[Have I left anything out?  If I have, we’ll probably be too busy dealing with the ramifications of the above to notice]]

You forgot Iran. After 9/11, the Iranians aided the US in Afghanistan and wanted to reach an accord. They were even willing to recognize the state of Israel. But Dumbya gave them a slap in the face instead because he and the Pubs need enemies to terrify the American people into voting Republican. The Pubs couldn't care less that what America needs is a more peaceful world. They're out for their own political gain and to Hell with what's good for the country.

BTW: It looks like  Jan. 6  "incident" with the Iranians in the Strait of Hormuz was completely bogus crap concocted by the Pentagon to frighten the Arab leaders prior to Bush's visit to the Middle East:

http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=40747

Bush spreads fear wherever he goes.

BTW: For all the Obama supporters who wouldn't vote for  Hillary and all the  Hillary fans who wouldn't vote for Obama, you all should consider how much you'll enjoy President Giulliani's term in office. Probably as much as people who voted for Ralph Nader instead of Al Gore have enjoyed Bush's fun-filled 8 years.

J. Merle Stanley, Westchester, NY (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 1:03 PM)

Hey. None of the other candidates did it...

1) Obama can rally people of all sides to any and all issues and come up with collaborative solutions to just about any problems. Look at his track record in the Illinois legislature. We don't have ANYONE in the present Congress on either side of the aisle that can, or is willing, to do that. Republicans, as much as we demonize them, are not the enemy. It does take getting them involved and hearing their side of an issue and even including any good ideas they may have into a substantive solution or piece of legislation. This is what it will take to fix the healthcare disaster in the country. This is what it will take to begin making repairs to the environment. This is what it will definitely take to fix the economy and make it so that people can afford their homes. There can be no specifics because the specifics come out through hard bargaining on all sides to make up a comprehensive piece of legislation.

2) He has done this by never seeing the other side as the enemy, but as an equal; people with their own set of values and thoughts and takes them seriously. One side is always willing to outright dismiss the opinions of the other because values are not shared or respected. He has proven that while he may not always agree with the opinions of the other side, he does realize they're entitled to them and does respect their values. Sometimes those values do represent part of the final solution. He will also help the other side get things accomplished that they feel are important. Look again at his track record in the Illinois legislature.

As for all the vitriolic hatred towards Hillary, I would still rather vote for her than any of the whackjobs running for President as Republicans. It is already well-documented by Dubya that continuing what we have now doesn't work and that's, really, what all of them believe is the best course.

Rob, Phoenix, AZ (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 1:04 PM)

Nothing new. O'Reilley and Matthews have been going at it forever now. There is no love lost between them.
If you want a Larger gov't (Larger than the one Bush created) and if you want more dead americans in Iraq vote for the GOP ... that has been their agenda the last 8 years and will be there agenda the next 4 years ..
Joe: I am not going to "have a problem with adding Clinton" just because it would be "Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton" - that would be foolish, particularly if the "Clinton" adding on to the end will help restore this country. I think just to say "I have a problem with it becuase it is in the same family, but let's give it to someone less competent because they aren't in the same family" is foolish.
"Funny, how none of you stepped up to apoplogize for that.  You just moved on to some other form of bashing.  This is a sad day for Democrats.
Stopwatchingfoxnews, Rochester, NY (Sent Friday, January 11, 2008 11:26 AM)"

I don't recall you apologizing for wildly miscontruing Obama's pro-choice record by harping on the present vote issue even though it has long been established that those votes were coordinated with Planned Parenthood.  You also tried to smear OBama by saying that he voted for the 2007 Energy Bill (which is a lie  he did not cast any vote on that bill) and said that HRC voted against it (which is also a lie - she alos didn't vote). I'm inviting you now to walk your talk and issue a personal apology to Obama for your comments over the last few days that were proven to be just more smear tactics from a Clintonista.

What's a sad day for Democrats is that people can't just stick to issue advocacy and have to come on to boards like this and whine all day that their candidate isn't being treated very nicely when they themselves are with a campaign that has thrown more mud than anyone.

This is primary season.  Elbows get thrown.  Grow a thicker skin or be prepared to have your feelings hurt.
