Red State support: Obama v. Clinton

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
As noted earlier, Sen. Ben Nelson’s endorsement is Obama’s third Red State endorsement in as many days. This gives Obama a 3-2 edge over Clinton in Red State senatorial endorsements. Clinton has long held an advantage in total establishment support. Endorsements by senators, congressional representatives and governors are key as they can be indicative of super delegate support, which on the Democratic side, make up a significant portion of total delegates to the national convention.

So far, 18 of Clinton’s 80 gubernatorial, senatorial and congressional support have come from those in Red States. That’s 23 percent. She has two governors (Beebe-AR, Strickland-OH) and two senators (Bayh-IN, Pryor-AR). Of note, five of the 18 are from Arkansas, where her husband was governor, and four of the 18 are from Florida. So, half of her Red State support is from Arkansas and Florida. She also has support from Texas (3), Ohio (2) and one each from Indiana, Georgia, Iowa and Nevada.

Obama has 15 of 43 governors, senators and representatives from Red States (35 percent), including the three in the past three days: Nelson-NE, Napolitano-AZ and Johnson-SD. Of note, he now has as many governors (2-Kaine-VA, Napolitano-AZ) as Clinton and more senators (3-Conrad-ND, Johnson-SD, Nelson-NE) from Red States. His Red State support is also more spread out: two each from Georgia and Missouri, and one each from Virginia, Arizona, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Iowa, Colorado and Florida.

Here’s the full list of Red State endorsements for Clinton and Obama, per Hotline and First Read’s compilation:

Yeah, that will make Obama win red states.
Gimme a break.
While it does appear most of these endorsements really do not mean much in the grand scheme and are quickly forgotten in the average American's political mind, I think it is important to note the energy and thought process that had to go into these politician's minds in choosing to endorse the fresh face versus the establishment candidate. I would venture a sugestion that these poliitcians are catching what their constituents are saying is important - CHANGE, HOPE, VISION and a real CHALLENGE to the American people of all political persuasions, races and cultures. GO OBAMA!!!
go obama. the contry needs change. even for those who can't see or refuse to see what your opponents are about, we hope you have the opportunity to bridge this country back together. we need to get away from the dirty politics such as what is happening in nevada. this is another good endorsement. may god be with you.
Do voters really care about endorsements?  What we should care about is whether we want to endorse a candidate willing to copy GOP attack politics verbatim.

For those who missed the dirty politics last weekend in NH (and then Bill's "clarifications yesterday", here's one voter's primer on the Clinton playbook:

Step 1: Slander your opponent
Step 2: Wait and see if you're called on the slander
Step 3: If called on the slander, decide whether you've offended a group you need to win the election
Step 4: If the answer to step 3 is "yes, we need that group," deny Step 1 ever happened.
Step 5: Hope nobody realizes what you just did
Step 6: If someone does realize what you did, see step 1 (slander them)

And now, the teacher's union in Nebraska has filed suite to disenfranchise the voters of the Culinary Union (see report in New York Times today).  Of course Senator Clinton's campaign will say it has nothing to do with that but who are they trying to kid.  If they think the tactic is underhanded politics, they can certainly talk the "Teacher's Union" into withdrawing their suite.   The Clinton campaign won't and that will be an implicit endorsement of yet another slimy Rovian tactic: if the voters aren't going to vote for you, try to disenfranchise them.

I'll say it again:  if you're  woman or a man and want to vote for Senator Clinton solely because you think it's time we had a woman President, there's nothing wrong with that.  It is high time we have more women leaders in national positions.

But please don't insult your own intelligence or ours by denying that Senator Clinton's campaign is using the very same trash and burn tactics that she's so criticized the right wing for using for so long.  De-nial is not just a river in Egypt.
I continue to be amazed by the strategy necessary to win a campaign.  Every citizen involved in the campaigned will be much more informed and better able to hold the government accountable.
NBC needs to wear out some shoe leather talking to folks in neighborhoods.  Push your chair back from your corporate desk, stop with the polls, drop the silly endorsement lists, and go listen to the voters in their own communities.  I have never met a single voter who said they made their decision based on Congressional endorsements.
4 Reasons why Hillary should NOT be the democratic nominee:

Hillary Clinton might win the nomination, but there are a number of problems with selecting her:

(1)Recent polls have shown that 50% of the country won’t vote for her in the general election under ANY circumstances, so she’s already playing on a really short field. It’s tough to win if half the country has turned its back on your candidacy and you don’t know for sure if you have the full support of the other half.

(2)The republicans want to run against her because they have 20 years’ worth of dirt against the Clintons to regurgitate in swiftboat ads during the general election.

(3)She needs independents to win, and Obama polls better than her with independents in general election match-ups.

(4)Bloomberg’s group, Unity08, has made it very clear that unless the parties nominate candidates that are NOT polarizing, they will place a very well-funded independent candidate (i.e. Bloomberg – who has up to $1 BILLION to spend) into the race. In other words they will throw in a SPOILER. Bloomberg is Ralph Nader X100. Hillary is the most polarizing candidate in either race, and she’s the one who 50% of the country won’t vote for in the general election, and who has a greater problem attracting independents – and the polls show this is in a two-party race WITHOUT a spoiler. So, the presence of a spoiler in the race is going to hurt Hillary (i.e. democrats) the most. Given these facts, I think Unity08 has been formed to stop Hillary from becoming president.

I think if democrats insist on nominating Hillary, we will for sure be in for 8 more years of republican rule.
"What we should care about is whether we want to endorse a candidate willing to copy GOP attack politics verbatim."

Wrong.  What we should care about is that careful balance between knowledge of the issues, character, experience, and the ability to win.  If Democrats want to win this election, the ticket should be Hillary Clinton for President, and Barack Obama for Vice President.  Hillary Clinton is ready, right now, and with a couple of terms of seasoning, Barack Obama will be ready as well.   We need a team ready to survive and overcome the GOP attacks in the general election.  We know what is coming...
I thought research is unbiased.  First the RFK piece and now this???  Dems will need blue states to win...don't you think the Ted Strickland's is the biggest prize...does anyone really think that Obama will win North Dakota or Nebraska when he is only polling in the mid 30's among Democrats???
Obama plays the same game...blamming Clinton from Bush's mistakes as being "status quo"  He also said for the record, that will use "tough" Chicago style politics in his campaign.
I have always had tremendous respect for Bill Clinton and have thought he did an incrediblbe job as president, but this campaign is starting to wear down my respect for the man.  Come on Bill, cut out the slander and show a little bit of courage.  I know your wife is running, but this is a bit bigger than your marrage.  And don't tell us now that your marrage is all that important to you.
Barack Obama for President of the UNITED States of America.

End Nepotism in the White House.
America is a Democracy - Not a Monarchy.
One of the big differences is Democrats up for re-election in competitive districts and states (like red states) are looking at the difference between having Obama and Clinton at the top of the ticket. I'm guessing part of the dynamic is an acknowledgement that Clinton as the nominee would energize Republicans (like we've never seen before) and thus make it very difficult for Democratic congressional candidates.
David Broder said on Tim Russert's show today that a lot of his republican friends will prefer Obama to most Republican candidates (which I read to mean Romney or Huckabee).
I hate Hillary Clinton. Im a democrat but I will vote against her in the general if she wins the nomination. She is evil, vile and driven by no other cause than her own ambition. Get ready for 4 long years of partisan bickering as the country continues to fall if she is elected.
OBAMA IS OUR LAST HOPE
How can these people endorse a character such as Obama is? I doubt that endorsements do matter a lot but what about honesty, integrity and trust, that does matter and Obama really apparently does not have any of those traits
What about Obama's association with Tony Rezco who was just indicted on fraud and paying politicians off to get favors.  Brian Ross of ABC investigated it and reported on it just this past week.  It is posted on you tube.  Obama admits the house deal he made with Rezco's wife and quote said he was a "bonehead" to do it. Rezco is a major contributor to Obama's Campaign What about the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago that he is a member of.  Go to their website.  http://www.tucc.org/home.htm  and also read the newsweek lengthy piece on it.
It is totally black as far as staff goes and primarily the congregation.  Research it for yourself and you will see that they really do not want any whites in that congregation. They are out to destroy the whites and put the blacks in charge.  It is a revenge thing.
What about the real lack of experience from Obama and also his undeniable Muslim roots?
There is just way too many questions about Obama and in the end Americans won't buy it.  A lot of these issues that I have raised here are coming out in droves all over the internet now.
That guy scares me a lot but he does make good speeches.
The Clintons have to stand against him but the race card is being played against the Clintons by the blacks and that is really unimaginable after all of the support they have given the black community.
Sadly, GE owned NBC/MS-NBC has now excluded Dennis Kucinich for this Tuesday debate. I am convinced it is because he is calling for a re-count. Please help. We want to hear ALL the candidates:

obama "vote for change! I have the endorsments of the established democrats"

anyone see a conflict?

LMAO
Hey guys, update your Obama list. I believe these are more:
Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.); Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.);  ; Rep. Danny Davis (D-Ill.); Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.);   Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.);   Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Ca.); Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.); Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.)
Did anyone see Shelby Steele on Bill Moyers last night?  He is the son of mixed race parents (his father’s African genetics rule in his case) and the author of “The Content of Our Character.”  He has a new book out on Senator Obama.
Notice none from SC, want to know why? John Edwards country! Rep. Bill Clyburn (D-Aiken) along with the Rep. Leon Howard- the Chair of the SC Black Caucus, and our states only black Sheriff in Lee County, SC are all supporting Edwards in the upcoming SC Democratic primary. Black folks here know that it is much more important to nominate the candidate that can actually win in November rather than play these silly little one up games. It is time Democrats wise up to the fact that neither Obama or Hillary can beat the GOP in the General election, while every major neutral polling firm out there shows that edward will beat every sinlge GOPer in places like Ohio, Virginia and Florida where we have lost the last two Presidential elections. Watch out for the January 26th SC Democratic priamry and the upcoming debate in Myrtle Beach. Had we rather win endorsemnets or beat the Repukes????
I live in Arizona and I am thrilled with Governor Napolitanos endorsement for Obama.
Talking to Republican friends I hear their respect for Obama, see their willingness to listen to him. If they hear the name Clinton, they shrug their shoulders, at best.
Napolitano wants to turn arizona blue. Chances are good, but only with Obama s President.
Go Obama !  Integrity and Honesty will win in the long run.  I will note vote for another Clinton.  http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/01/12/taken_for_granite.html
This is why we need change.  When the dems (Clintons) become republicans, we've lost.  This is the problem with triangulation and poll driven politics of the Clintons.

What do they really stand for?  Answer - whatever the polls say.

We need a new kind of politics, OBAMA
Obama tells me to hope so i start hoping.

Obama tells me to change, so I change my parents since they are past and status quo.

Obama tells Scott in California to repeat post 100 times a day, so he does it. It's a change from his other work.

Obama asks me to convince my other immature youth friends to cheer for change, I do it.

Obama tells me change is new, I agree (not knowing every election Presidential politicians talk about change and nothing changes).
Please, any of you Hillary supporter, please tell me how you TRUST this woman and her husband (who WILL be living in the White House and who WILL be telling his wife what to do-he can't even keep his mouth shut and let her run her own campaign).   I am a young(30), white, female, school teacher and like most of the rest of this country, have lost all respect and trust in our government and leaders.  Like many young people, I am very concerned about the future of this country, and have taken great interest in this election.  Now, I live in Iowa, and thankfully, we did not have all of this crazy media frenzy before our Caucus.  The candidates had been in and out of our state and I did attend rallies for three of the Dems.  I also, took it upon myself, not others, to find out each of the candidates platforms (this is very easily -just go to their campaign website).  Clinton, Obama, and Edwards have VERY similar views-they all know that healthcare, economy, and ending the war is important, and they ALL have detailed plans on their website, and many of their plans are very similar.  Here is the REAL difference, and the reason why I DID NOT choose to Caucus for Hillary:  When I, (and MANY others) think of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and their time in the White House, the VERY FIRST thing that pops into my head is not any of the good things that Bill Clinton accomplished as President, but the fact that they BOTH  LIED to all of us, and of all the silly scandals that happened during their time in the WHite House.  Believe me, I am not the only one-ask anyone that you know- What is the thing that you remember most about Bill and Hillary Clinton and their time in the WHite House and they will say Monica Lewinsky, Whitewater.  They both LIED to all of us.  Now, I really could care less about the fact that he had an affair, but then he LIED-they both did.  How am I supposed to trust Hillary Clinton when she looked the American people in the face and LIED.  What has she done to prove to any of us that she won't LIE again?  I am not convinced, and if any of you, who think she would never LIE again, have ever heard about Peter Paul, you would realize that she is STILL Lying!!!! This is exactly what is wrong with our government and the exact thing that we need to CHANGE!  And yes, I said the CHANGE word, and if any of you have been listening to Sen. Obama, this is EXACTLY the kind of change that he is talking about.  Yes, he has detailed plans that outline how he will go about cleaning up the mess that has been thrust upon our country, by the likes of  Hillary Clinton-the same old people, doing the same old thing-but more importantly, he wants to CHANGE the fact that our government is ran by a few people that do not have OUR best interest in mind-people like Hillary Clinton.  He understands that for this country to prevail, we have to come together, Reps., Dems., Indep., black, white, Hispanic, EVERYONE, and make things happen.  This will never happen if Hillary Clinton is President.  Many people don't feel that they can trust her because she has REPEATEDLY  LIED to the American people.  Barrack Obama has already proven that he can inspire people to come together for a greater cause- the proof is here in Iowa, where record numbers of people came together, after listening to him-NOT the media, and chose him as the best candidate for our next President.  And don't forget that this is a 95% white state, and that he had more women voters than Hillary so don't try to blame the race or sex vote.  And for those of you who don't believe that Barrack has enough experience, you may want to check out his record and then compare it to those "35" years that Hillary keeps LYING about.  Experience means nothing if you can't be trusted.  G.W. Bush has 8 years experience and I don't think anyone would trust him to do anything.
Go Obama-You Speak the TRUTH
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) fits in with the Clinton crowd.... He's a CROOK !

'...Hastings was impeached for bribery and perjury by a vote of 413-3...'

From Wikipedia:

'...In 1981 Judge Hastings was charged with accepting a $150,000 bribe in exchange for a lenient sentence and a return of seized assets for 21 counts of racketeering by Frank and Thomas Romano, and of perjury in his testimony about the case. He was acquitted by a jury after his alleged co-conspirator, William Borders, refused to testify in court (resulting in a jail sentence for Borders).

In 1988, the Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives took up the case, and Hastings was impeached for bribery and perjury by a vote of 413-3. Voters to impeach included Democratic Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, John Conyers and Charles Rangel. He was then convicted in 1989 by the United States Senate, becoming the sixth federal judge in the history of the United States to be removed from office by the Senate. The vote on the first article was 69 for and 26 opposed, providing five votes more than the two-thirds of those present that were needed to convict. The first article accused the judge of conspiracy. Conviction on any single article was enough to remove the judge from office. The Senate vote cut across party lines, with Senator Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont voting to convict his fellow party member, and Arlen Specter voting to acquit....'

Why do Democrats do this? You talk about how a teachers' union in NV is suing over at-large voting districts and because a few people associated with the campaign support Clinton, then her campaign is involved. Would you say the same thing if Clinton got union support and supporters of Obama sued for the same thing?

WE need to stop attacking our candidates. I find it funny that the only reason ppl are supporting Obama is because of one word: "Change". Everybody says it is so original and dynamic, but candidates have ran on this platform since the beginning of the republic. What are his stances? The same as Clinton's or Edwards's....don't just vote for someone because they are a good speaker, vote for them on their substance.
The Clintons may in fact be very good at slash and burn. But don't be so naive to think this is a beauty contest. The GOP is not going to go gently into the night. Hoping for something, no matter how noble, doesn't replace preparation. The civil rights movement was pushed by people like MLK, but it took LBJ's arm twisting to get it done. Don't for a minute think JFK and RFK didn't know how to play politics. What we need is idealism combined with a real ability to get it done.
Obama should make change.

Working at Target or WalMart.

That is what his experience qualifies him for.
I hear over and over again about the lack of Obama's experience. Well think about this, with Cheney and Rumsfeld, combined experience equals 50 or more years. However, they are the worse decision makers I have ever seen. So experience means what?
Obama gave the money he got from Rezco to charity. WHY? He should have gave the money back!! Giving it to charity is using the money for his political gain and for his good press!! If he is going to keep the money fine, say I'm keeping it, politicians get dirty money , we all do, who cares, but to pretend that he is different because he doesn't accept the money and then use it to make it look like he gives to charity and mak it look like he doesn't accept dirty money when he turns around and uses it for good press is diseptive, and very inauthentic, he talks good and makes it seem like he's different but let's be honest they all are in it to win and we need to be honest with ourselves. Who do we think will do best for the 4 years they're in office!!Hillary has more experience, Obama is more charismatic. Also what about Hillary for president and Obama for Vice President. Blacks will have a voice, a women will finally be in the lead of a man, and both sides of the democrat vioce will be heard. Sounds like a solution to me. Obama president and Hillary Vice doesn't work though because in this sexist male dominated society the image of a woman behind a man will not change anything and I think that is the biggest change that we need today.
And yes I am a male. We need more honesty and less passionate statements, people are getting too wrapped up in their emotions and not paying attention to reality.
Thanks for all that read this because everyones voice should be heard.
