Clinton justifies war vote, hits Obama

Posted: Sunday, January 13, 2008 10:31 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Clinton justified her 2002 Iraq war vote again on Meet the Press, saying that she thought "it was a vote to put inspectors back in” so Saddam Hussein could not go unchecked. She insisted that she was “told by the White House personally” as were others that that’s what the resolution was for and noted that Bush himself said publicly that the resolution was the best chance to avoid a confrontation.

Moderator Tim Russert pointed out that the title of the resolution was the “Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002.”

Clinton responded saying, “We can have this Jesuitical argument about what exactly was meant. But when Chuck Hagel, who helped to draft the resolution said, 'It was not a vote for war,' What I was told directly by the White House in response to my question, 'If you are given this authority, will you put the inspectors in and permit them to finish their job,' I was told that's exactly what we intended to do. ”

Clinton then turned it back to Obama as she had earlier in the show, noting that his anti-Iraq intervention speech was in 2002; by 2003 it was down from his Web site; by 2004, he “was saying he really didn’t disagree with how George Bush was conducting the war;” from 2005 to 2007, he voted for war funding and didn’t go to the floor to condemn the war for 18 months; and  “wasn’t for timelines initially.”

Russert noted that she voted similarly, and Clinton said, "I’m not premising my campaign on something different. I’m not here saying anything different from that. Judgment is not a single snapshot."

She also defended Bill Clinton’s “fairy tale” comment about Obama’s campaign, saying it was taken out of context; that he was, in fact, directly referring to Obama’s stance on the war through the years.

Clinton also attacked Obama for his lobbying reform bill, noting that at the pre-New Hampshire debate, it was pointed out that lobbyists could still buy meals as long as they are standing up. She reiterated that the campaign is the contrast between "rhetoric" and "reality."

“When the cameras are gone and the lights are off, what do you do next?” Clinton said of Obama. She even went on to say, “He does not have a record of producing positive change.”

The Obama campaign responded, saying, “Obama introduced and helped pass the strongest ethics reform since Watergate. It includes a full ban on gifts and meals from lobbyists, an end to subsidized travel for lawmakers on corporate jets, full disclosure on lobbyists’ campaign contributions, and restrictions to close the revolving door that enables former congressmen to become high-paid lobbyists.” The campaign goes on to cite the Washington Post, which called it “the strongest ethics legislation to emerge from Congress yet.”

NOTES:
Clinton also posited on more than one occasion on the show that any political progress in Iraq was "because they see this election, and they don’t have much time.... It is a big factor in pushing the Iraqi govt to push them to do what they should have been doing all along." ... On her emotional moment, she called it a moment of "real emotional connection."

At least Obama has gotten legislation passed.  I guess HRC thinks it's better to do nothing and then claim she has a great voting record.  If she is so stupid as to have believed the White House assurances, instead of READING the legislation, she does not deserve to be POTUS.  We don't need lazy stupid people as president, as Bush has shown us.
Has Obama appeared on Meet the Press yet?
This liar needs to be called on her lie!
The Clintons and the slime machine keeps on rolling.
What we want are the candidates to speak to the issues and how to solve our present and future problems we have been left with from the Bush team.  Clinton does just that and she showed this again today when she stood up to Tim Russert and his "got you" comments.
Did she cry?
Has everyone forgotten that there were many of us who knew that Cheney and Bush always had a secret agenda long before the first vote and then Clinton votes again to give Bush carte blanche to go into Iran. She is not change! And people saw one ungarde moment, but she and her husband are lifetime politicians who would use any tactic to win. They are not change. I am a woman. And, were she a woman with a vision for the future, I would be the first one to support her. But she is also one of the old guard. Only her gender is new.
I gave Clinton her hearing. I don't dislike Hillary, however she makes me tired, listening to her justify her vote to authorize Bush to invade Iraq. I don't think she is a born leader, she is a follower. Obama is a leader. I'd rather nominate him and take a chance the Repugs will beat him, than nominate Clinton and watch McCain become President.
Gee, Senator Clinton gets an hour with Russert to talk about her candidacy, and thus far most of what I've seen is her talking about Obama. Big surprise.
Contrary to honest reporting, the use of one sentence made by President Bill Clinton without the preceeding sentence was tantamount to lying to your viewers.  The fairy tale statement was specifically descriptive of Senator Obama's statement on his lack of support for the war in Iraq and you know it.  If you don't know it your people did a lousy job of research, when the speech was readily available in its entirety.  You owe your viewers an apology and the truth.
I'm just to disgusted with Senator Clinton after that interview...and why did she yell throughout the whole Meet The Press interview.  This woman is so calculating is makes me wanna throw up!
I wish that Russert would ask "Mrs. Clinton, we hear so much about your '35 years of experience'.  Being that 22 years of that was spent as first lady, how can you claim that your Husband's experience counts as your own?"
Excellent! The Clinton campaign is just trying to compare and contrast between Obama's record and her record. No racial issues here, i find all these critics jusr ridiculous. The Clintons have helped the black community more than any other black politican has done in recent times.
Go CLINTON
I'm watching the interview now, and while she has responded to the Clyburn / MLK stuff fairly well, she clearly did so in a way that is accepting the black vote as being largely lost, so she may as well push the buttons and reap the positive.  I find it fascinating, as it is almost a Dem primary version of the Southern Strategy.
THIS WOMAN IS SO FULL OF IT.....MY GOD SHE UNWILLING TO RUN ON HER OWN CAMPAIGN.....SHE IS LIAR AND UNWILLING TO TELL THE TRUTH AT ANY TIME....

SHE PLAYED THE RACE CARD AND THEN BLAMED OTHERS
SHE VOTED FOR THE IRAQ WAR AND THEN BLAMED OTHERS
WHO DID SHE BLAME WHEN HER HUSBAND CHEATED THE REPUBLICANS

HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR
HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR
HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR
HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR
HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR
HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR

OR DID I FORGET TO SAY HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello:
I am so disappointed in Tim Russerts' interview with Hillary Clinton this morning. What happened to the hard hitting questions Tim. The hour long interview with Hillary turned out to be nothing more than a "Hillary" commercial for her campaign for President. Since when does a guest tell Tim "Wait a minute I am not going to let you get away with that". Tim allowed Hillary (on several occassions) to cut him off in mid sentence. The first twenty minutes were nothing more a campaign appearance by Hillary discussing all the reasons to vote for her and against Obama. I am unbeliveably disappointed. The only recourse (seems to me) would be to have Obama back on the show as soon as possible. I am sooo very disappointed in Tim Russert. What happened Tim, did you handle her with kid gloves because she is a woman and you didn't want women (of which I am one and have been a faithful viewer for many years) to offend women? Very disappointed in you!!!
If Clinton really didn't think her vote was to allow military force...for a WAR...then she is just too damn stupid to be President.
First of all, it was very impressive. For leadership, experience is the best teacher! We had economic prosperity and the world respected us during the Clinton administration. Ever since Bush took the office, we have lost millions of jobs, respect in the world, the economy is in danger of overheating amid rising inflationary pressure, and we are facing a record trade and budget deficit. Most folks hate Americans -- I don't know if you guys noticed that, but I visit foreign countries.

I like Obama's personality, but I don't think he will win the nomination. It's just too hard for him to win other states. He is still unknown to most Americans and too new to trust. On the other hand, may be Obama doesn't practice Islam, but there sure is a lot of talk about him being Muslim, which could hurt him in the general election.

We need to regain what we have lost. Among other presidential candidates, I really like Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, but I wish they had some experience, especially in foreign affairs and economy. I believe that Clinton is the best and most experienced candidate among both Republican & Democrat fields. Experience does count in this troubling economy

Hillary made a mistake appearing on this show. It certainly did nothing to help her campaign. She showed many flashes of her "thin skin." Tim was masterful in his questioning. He was a perfect "gentleman", but was very, very effectively able to debunk much of the stuff she and her campaign have been doing. The Clinton campaign CANNOT play the "poor Hillary was ganged up on" card with this interview by Tim. He was amazing! Kudos to Tim! Obama was the winner of this appearance! Hillary came across as shrill, petty, and petulant. Not a good Sunday morning for Hillary!
Wow. All politicans lie a bit but Ms Clinton does it with such ease, it's scary.
For someone who talks about "rhetoric vs reality" and then says she's accomplished so much for change, WHAT HAS SHE ACCOMPLISHED?

Seriously, she keeps saying she's a workhorse and that she has all these major accomplishments.  But we NEVER hear specifics.
Go Hillary! Be strong and call spade a spade.

The world is not a mushy mushy fairy tale place. It's time Americans come back to reality.

If they dont, God help us!  (like He did for another talker & uniter in last 7 years)
I am a faithful viewer of Meet the Press and again Tim's personal dislike for Mrs. Clinton showed in his interview.  Mrs. Clinton argued points with pose and intellect.  As a follower of this 2008 campaign, many clips were taken out of context.  She was right on when responding to poll numbers presented.  I would have thought the media learned their lesson about relying on polls from the New Hampshire results. Stop getting egg on your face, remember 2000?  Ease up on the old gal, Tim when she's elected you'll be begging her to guest on the show.
I think that one of the reasons Obama lost NH was because his campaign failed to respond forcefully to these Clinton attacks.
Their response here is similar to their response in NH where after the Clintons have leveled series of allegations, the campaign would pick and address only one of those issues.
Here, Hillary was talking about inconsistency in Obama's Iraq position, his relationship with lobbyists, and the ethic reforms (most or all of the allegations might be simple distortion of facts).
Obama's campaign should have addressed all the issues raised and at the end throw-in a counter punch too.
I know that Obama have addressed these issues time and again, but in politics, you must keep repeating your answers and defenses as long as your opponents are repeating their allegations.
That is politics, you cannot defend yourself enough, and people tend to forget your answers of yesterday in the light of your opponent's allegations today.
Russert asked her what she learned from Iraq. She did not give a 'big' answer about why creating a secular, plural democracy might have been flawed.

She says there is a big problem across the Middle East, but she gives no clue as to some general principles to make the region work.

She says she just authorized inspections, basically, and negotiation. So where do we use force in the future? Bush defined the issue. She can't say she was 'wrong enough' to get out of Bush still defining her.

She might have said "Look Tim, I backed the war when I thought we were winning, when the war was a winner.
When the war went really, really bad, I was less enthusiastic. Since I backed the war, I won't say it was wrong, but it hasn't worked out so well, and I do want to distance myself from failure."
Hillary returned to her lying, misleading self with this interview.  The emotional, caring person in New Hampshire was gone.  I realized once again why Hillary would be a horrible President.  It was not a pretty sight.
I understand Hillary trying to wiggle her way on the Iraq vote and the Levin amendment but I am distressed that she continues to characterize the Levin amendment as giving the UN a veto over the President.  That's the reason she cites for not supporting Levin.

She said she hoped Bush would allow the inspectors to go back in, and other assorted nonsense about what she (falsely) hoped Bush would do when the vote was a vote for war authorization.

The problem I have with Clinton on this point is the she attacks Obama in one breath for shifting positions but in the next breath lies about the Levin amendment.

"Our resolution also affirms that the United States has at all times the inherent right to use military force in self-defense. There is no veto given the United Nations in this resolution of ours. Quite the opposite. We explicitly make it clear we maintain, of course, a right to use self-defense." (Sen. Carl Levin, Congressional Record, 10/10/02, p. S10251)

Going after Obama is fine, but Ms. Clinton you are lying about the Levin amendment and you know it.  I guess you are ready on day one.

Take the pink shade over ur glasses and then look at world. It is different, not a starry eyed fairy tale.
I still don't get the idea that Obama has been inconsistent on the Iraq war.  He made one statement during the Kerry inaguration that sounded a bit inconsistent but he said that was because he had to be careful to not sound contradictaory towards nominees Kerry and Edwards who voted for the Iraq war.  Now, Hillary has been thoroughly inconsistent. She was been on Bush iraq war bandwagon until about a year ago when she realized that her position would never sell to the Democratic voters.
I think she insulted the blacks who were offended by Bill and her because she continued to say people were misrepresenting them and taking them out of context and kept referring to Obama, when clearly there were others who were offended and clips were shown to prove it.  Her "emotional, soft side" seemed to be AWOL today, as was the new "friendly" Hillary.  When she said she doesn't pay attention to polls, she hit a new low in lying.
Even though Senator Clinton was grilled by Russert and he twisted facts at times. She came back each time with intelligent answers.  She never faltered once.  She was even gracious toward Obama.

She is wonderful and really showed that once again today on Russert's program.  He did not show those experience polls from N.H. that showed her winning 71% to Obama's mere 5%.
One thing though that is very worrisome to me is a story that is now today being confirmed about Obama's Muslim religion.  Here is the link to at least one of the websites that it came out on today. http://news.newsmax.com/?yM.mDK2a1cvzjauo0KIShBRKzQy Here is a quote from the article And he adds: “All this matters, for if Obama once was a Muslim, he is now what Islamic law calls a murtadd (apostate), an ex-Muslim converted to another religion who must be executed. Were he elected president of the Untied States, this status, clearly, would have large potential implications for his relationship with the Muslim world.”
Americans you saw Senator Clinton on Tim Russert's show today and the worse thing he could drag up on her was the Lewinsky affair which as she said, everyone knows about that and that she accepted that and did the best she could when going through it.
Obama will soon be forced to come clean. Search and research his record and you will Vote for Hillary in 2008.
Once again the media is working against Hillary. The replay of Bill saying "Its a fairy tale" was just that. Russert did not play what is said before that which if you have seen the speach you will know Bill was talking about Iraq and not Obama's campaign. Incredible a show like Meet The Press can be so sensational!!!!! If Obama was such a stand up guy he would have said so and not played the race card.

Winner = Barack Obama

Big Losers = Hillary and Bill Clinton

Tim Russert was fantastic! He was respectful, yet penetrating in his questioning. He was absolutely brilliant in bringing out the most unattractive side of Hillary. He was able to let her go on at length, but then come back with zinger after zinger. But he never came across in a harsh, combative way. Hillary was the one who came across as harsh and very unappealing.

Barack Obama should be smiling! I know I am! A good day for Obama supporters!

Obama tells me change is new, I agree (not knowing every election Presidential politicians talk about change and nothing changes).

Obama tells me to hope so i start hoping.

Obama tells me to change, so I change my parents since they are past and status quo.

My friends (fellow Obama supporters) tell me to repeat Hillary hate posts 100 times a day, so I do it. It's a change from my other work.

Obama tells me to convince my other immature youth friends to cheer for change, I do it.

She lies again & is not fit to be her party nominee much less POTUS!
As an independent, the best way to make me vote for a Republican is to have Hillary as the democratic nominee.

For Hillary, its all about her presumed right to be president.  In contrast, Obama is self-made and inspirational.  We will vote for Obama if nominated.

My wife and I will never vote for Hillary - we are both socially moderate.
Tim Russert is a Corporate driven media host who met his match with Hillary Clinton.  She know that he is only looking for a sound bite, something he can use when playing 'Trivial Pursuit' with Chris Matthews.

The only complaint she can find on the Lobbying Bills is that they can stand up while eating,WOW.....And she couldn't even come up with that one on her own...She got the question from Charles Gibson of ABC.....The kind of excuses they give of the reason why Senator Obama shouldn't be President is stretching to say they least..

And when they can't find any troublesome information on the Senator Obama, they either fabricate it or play to others internal prejudices....Then turn around and accuse others of what they created and some Americans are gullible and dumb enough to believe it...Everyone should just face the fact the Clintons never take responsibility for anything they do.....It's always someone else fault but never there own....
I have lost all respect for Hillary.  She seems to think that if you repeat a lie enough, and with enough of a matter of fact expression, that people will believe you.  Obama was outspoken in his opposition to this war from the start. She was in a position to stop it. She did not. End of story.

I am a democrat, but I will not vote for Hillary if she wins the nod.  I refuse to reward the underhandedness both Clintons have shown with another trip to the White House.
Denise,
Tim Russert did an outstanding job with Hillary this morning.  He was kind and gentle with her in delivery but his questions were dead-on and she flopped and yelled the whole hour.  I think she did a tremendous disservice to her campaign.  Truth is Edwards Obama and Clinton don't have a lot of experience.  Clinton can NOT use her experience as First Lady as experience..that's outrageous.  She was not an official elected by the people - that's not public service and for people to be brainwashed into thinking that angers me.  Hillary Clinton is not her husband...voting for her is not brining Bill back.  I find her to be a calculating, mechanical windbag.
After watching the show this morning, I am even more impressed with Hillary.  She certainly does not hesitate or waiver with her responses. It is very important to have the experience and understand the system.  It is just totally unrealistic to think that someone who is likeable (Obama) can waltz into the Washington polictical arena and make immediate changes. Yes in many minds this is a dream and Obama looks like a quick fix.  Wake up People. My vote goes to Hillary without a doubt.
Clinton Attacks Luther King
It took a white President to finish the dreams of a black leader Luther King who was killed in known circumstances. The Clinton's comments are more than shocking…

Clinton Attacks Obama
It's shocking to see how Clinton is attacking Obama rather than defending her records: The Clinton have been in Washington for 8 years - not much have been done by them- no change has been seen - But during the last dems debate in NH- Clinton said that she has been doing changes for 35 years… Could she show one of the great changes that she has done for this country? What Clinton have really done to unite the country and its people, what did they do for education, health care, etc. We should judge people on their results, for now I don't see any tangible results from the Clintons. During their mandate, a genocide has been committed in Rwanda and injustice in America did not decrease…
I hope they have memory of having done no thing to stop the genocide in Rwanda, etc.
Obama
Obama is new in Washington and can't be held accountable for the past but he has to be judged on his record: He did oppose Irak war in 2002 and he is still opposed to it but as he explained one day, as America went to war in Irak he took his responsibilities when he voted for budget to help men and women in US Uniforms there and Obama said that he won't be in Washington to reduce America's force but to increase it by moral means as well as force if needed. Obama is the best choice for this time for America to show to the World how America is modern and smart state...
If it wasn't a vote for war... why did it take her two or three years to criticize the war?  Why didn't she stand up in March of 2002 when the first bombs were dropped and ACTUALLY SAY "This isn't what I voted for!!"

If you can't admit your mistakes, how do we know you won't make them again?
What we want are the candidates to speak to the issues and how to solve our present and future problems we have been left with from the Bush team.  Clinton does just that and she showed this again today when she stood up to Tim Russert and his "got you" comments.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can't be serious
I can't wait for the Daily Show on Monday.
I feel like we are debating the meaning of "IS" again!!

Not good.

Is this what Americans want?

Can't wait to see.
I'm a professional woman of Hillary CLinton's generaion and would like nothing better than to see a woman president.  But she should not count on the support of women, just because of gender.  She appeared to use the Meet the Press time as an opportunity to bash Obama at every turn, esp. when she felt cornered. ANd she repeated her barbs on the show against Obama almost word for word re: his vote on the Iraq war- we heard you the first time, Hillary.
Tim Russert gave her a gracious opening with the Doris Kearns Goodwin quote about an important presidential quality being the ability to learn from one's mistakes.  Apparently, Hillary Clinton has never made any mistakes and so has nothing to learn.  This is not the type of president that I want - we already have a president who is unable to learn from his mistakes and so we continue in the disaster in Iraq.
Finally, Hillary Clinton says she is just like regular people???  Please, she has many good qualities and experience but comparing herself and her life to most of America is just ridiculous.
Thought Russert might get in a question about what she meant when she said, "no woman is illegal."

And also thought he might ask her about her "experience" a little more. She claims 35 years of public service. But some of those, as we all know, were working for a private Arkansas law firm. And of course much of this time was as state and national first lady.

What is the quality of this experience? Its a discussion that we haven't had. We've had shrill responses from both sides, with very little discussion. In a less shrill environment, I think we'd all agree her time in private law practice doesn't translate well to presidential-like experience. At least its nothing extraordinary - lawyers are a dime a dozen. So what are we to make of her time in Arkansas and the White House as the spouse?

Its an interesting discussion. She claims, and certainly can point to indicators, that she wasn't just the first lady in Washington. I don't know anything about her in Arkansas. She was given health care to run with as a project. That in itself was unusual. But after that projects failure, she seemingly took a less visible role. We also know she was reported to be running the 'war room' during the impeachment.

I'm guessing to get a better feel for the right answer here would entail looking back at the Clinton Administration in greater detail, and then trying to discern more about what she actually did there.
Sen. Clinton's  interview shows her knowledge of the issues.  It seems that if her views do not agree with your views, then she must be lying.  That is an immature way of looking at things.  I think Mr. Russert should not compare a vote in the Senate with information given only to members of the Senate, to a statement (at an anti-war rally) that was part of a speech that Sen. Obama gave in Chicago in 2002. Sen. Obama, as a US Senator, has consistently voted with the majority of the senators to continue funding the war, which have always been put as supporting our troops.  Sen. Clinton has made dificult decisions, she has worked her entire adult life for children (Childrens Defense Fund), for the uninsured (coverage for children).  She was beat up very badly when she worked for universal coverage as First Lady, and was critised for having the nerve to work on something when she was only First Lady.  Please at least acknowledge that she does have experience, and she gets things done.  This is why I am supporting Sen. Clinton for President.  I know she will continue getting things done.  We need to make changes, she will do just that.
Obama has appeared on Meet the Press twice lately. He was on for the full hour on Nov.11, and for 1/2 of the show two weeks ago. He was very eloquent and forceful and impressive in both appearances.

Hillary was just awful today. She came across as snippy and unattractive. Her answers were almost laughable at times. One example was when Tim asked about how her campaign complained in Iowa that many working people couldn't vote, but are now complaining because Nevada will allow people to vote in their workplaces. What a hypocrite!!

Hillary did not have a good interview. Bet she wishes she could take it back!

Go, Obama!!!!
