Bob Johnson's shot at Obama

Posted: Sunday, January 13, 2008 5:23 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Christina Jamison and Mark Murray
In the latest dust-up over race in the Democratic contest, BET founder Bob Johnson introduced Hillary Clinton at a town hall today at Columbia University. And in his remarks, he asked voters -- it was not a predominantly African American crowd -- not to vote for a candidate because they are black or a woman, but because they are the best. He added a shot at Obama:

"As an African American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues, when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood that I won't say what he was doing but he said it in his book... When they have been involved, to say that these two people would denigrate the accomplishment of civil rights marchers, men and women who were hosed, beaten and bled, and some died... To say and to expect us now all of a sudden to say we are attacking a black man. That kind of campaign behavior does not resonate with me or a guy that says I want to be a reasonable, likeable Sidney Poitier 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.' And I'm thinking to myself, this ain't a movie, Sidney."

In her town hall, Clinton did not bring up the issue. She largely stuck to her stump and took questions from the audience, none of which were about race.

The Obama campaign later produced this statement from former South Carolina Rep. "I.S." Leevy Johnson: “It’s offensive that Senator Clinton literally stood by and said nothing as another one of her campaign’s top supporters launched a personal, divisive attack on Barack Obama,” said Johnson.  “For someone who decries the politics of personal destruction, she should’ve immediately denounced these attacks on the spot.”

The Clinton campaign then produced this comment from Johnson: “My comments today were referring to Barack Obama's time spent as a community organizer, and nothing else. Any other suggestion is simply irresponsible and incorrect. When Hillary Clinton was in her twenties she worked to provide protections for abused and battered children and helped ensure that children with disabilities could attend public school. That results oriented leadership -- even as a young person -- is the reason I am supporting Hillary Clinton.”

Clinton is a potent symbol of a dying era.  Let's move beyond Clinton-Bush division politics.  Clinton would lock America into the same old devide we've had for 20 years. ENOUGH !
Throughout this campaign Obama has not brought into it the race issue.  This is the Clinton establishment bringing race into it.  Now the Clintons need to deal with their dirty politics.   America is sick and tired of the Clintions and everyone associated with them.   Dems ask yourselves, is this what we want the Democratic party to represent to young people ???
All aboard the B.S. Express!

Obama makes Nixon look like a choir boy!

Thank goodness that Tim Novak, Chris Fusco, and Art Golab with the Chicago Sun Times, ABC News, and John Kass and Jeff Coen with the Chicago Tribune do care about facts!

Obama, took donations from currently indicted Rezko while Rezko's low-income housing empire , which was largely financed by taxpayers left African-American families in buildings plagued with problems -- including no heat, squatters and drug dealers. More than half of these buildings went into foreclosure, which will cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.

Rezko, was charged last fall with demanding kickbacks on state business deals under Gov. Blagojevich.

Obama paid $300,000 less than the asking price for a South side mansion deal, which wasn't to be sold as separate lots, while Rezko's wife paid the doctor full price for the vacant lot next door. After paying for the care of the Rezko lot for over a year, right before Rezko was indicted -- Obama bought part of the lot from Rezko's wife, so that he could put up a fence and pretend that they were separated.

But wait there's more! Obama was an attorney with a small Chicago law firm -- Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland -- that helped Rezmar get more than $43 million in government funding to rehab 15 of their 30 apartment buildings for the poor.

Due to the utter neglect of Rezko's corporation Rezmar this nightmare unfolded:

• Seventeen buildings -- many beset with code violations, including a lack of heat -- ended up in foreclosure.

• Six buildings are currently boarded up.

• Hundreds of the apartments are vacant, in need of major repairs.

• Taxpayers have been stuck with millions in unpaid loans.

• At least a dozen times, the city of Chicago sued Rezmar for failure to heat buildings.

Example: At the Englewood apartment building at 7000 S. Sangamon the tenants were without heat for five weeks from Dec. 27, 1996, until at least Feb. 3, 1997, when the city of Chicago sued to turn the heat on. The case was settled later that month with a $100 fine and it was during that time that the area's new state senator, Barack Hussein Obama, got a $1,000 campaign donation from Rezmar. The date: Jan. 14, 1997.

Obama spent the next eight years serving special interests in the Illinois Senate and continued to work for the Davis law firm. Through its partnerships, Rezmar, Rezko's corporation, remained a client of the firm, according to ethics statements Obama filed while a state senator.

According to biographical information Obama submitted to the Sun-Times in 1998 he specialized "in civil rights litigation, real estate financing, acquisition, construction and/or redevelopment of low-and moderate income housing''.

Meanwhile, Obama describes his work as saintly helping Churches or Mom & Pop types helping the poor -not himself in his B.S. laden books.

Obama's legal work on Rezko's deals won't make him a saint either, which he finally acknowledged according to an e-mail his presidential campaign staff sent the Sun-Times on Feb. 16, in response to earlier inquiries.

Over the years, Rezko, a Syrian national, and his business partner Mahru, their wives and businesses have given more than $50,000 to Obama's campaign funds, records show. And Rezko has helped raise millions more.

Rezko was among the people Obama appointed to serve on his U.S. Senate campaign finance committee, the Sun-Times reported in 2003. The committee raised more than $14 million, according to Federal Election Commission records, helping send Obama to Washington in 2004.

As a U.S. senator, Obama grew closer to Rezko, eventually soliciting Rezko's wife to help him buy his mansion and the lot next door.

Yeah, Texas oil tycoon/ Halliburton politics aren't bad enough. Let's bring the Daley machine to the White House! Hop on board the B.S. Express with Chris Matthews & Co.! Too bad it will be real cold when you get back to your home with no heat.
Marbw,  PLB , etc - If you all are Obama surrogates, then I am scared.

If this is how Obama surrogates disrespect a young voter just because I disagree and bring a different perspective, then God Bless America from hypocrites like you.

You are winning just by fooling youths where in reality you dont respect them at all. Shame on such Obama surrogates indulge in character assasination of young voters based on knowledge.

Oh, is Obama black? I forgot. I became most interested in the person.

Is Hillary a female? I don't know, but she represents the vicious Clinton Political Machine.

Marbw, I love you. You have done your homework and anyone who takes the time and reviews the information you supply, they would know the REAL story. I guess Clintons are counting on blatant ignorance from voters (blind support). Otherwise, why would they even begin to THINK that they could get away with their "spin"?

Obama gets my vote, not only because he is the best candidate, but because he is running a "gentleman's" campaign.  Hillary may be smart, but she is no "lady", nor is she Bill Clinton. (At least he was likeable.)
bob johnson the founder of the first black tv channel that started out as a pretty fair reflection of black america before he turned it into a soft porn site warranting disclaimers before and after each show. his comments have zero merit, he looks and sounds as if he is on crack. if obama was not so credible the clintons and supporters would not have to spend so much time in the gutters attempting to discredit him and could actually expose their agenda and plains for the country. honesty is impossible to refute, as they look like fools trying to recant yet another statment. whilst barack keeps defining class
Will the the Mainstream Media as well as MSNBC Stop laying these comments on Barack Obama.   He has not said anything.   I hope the Clintons do not pull out a parade of Black People to let the rest of the African Americans know they are not racist and knock Obama's Campaign.   It is totally not necessary.   I hope they don't stand around and have other African Americans makes negatives statements about Obama.

His Campaign has not made any such remarks.   Obama himself is not making any remarks against the Clintons.   Other African Americans are making the remarks.   I for one would like the  News Media to get it right.

Hillary Clinton is just blowing smoke to say how offended she is.   Then she should  make her remarks to Jim Clyburn.  He is the one that said he was troubled over her remark regarding MLK.

Get It straight Mainstream Media.
Jean from AZ wrote: "Stupid Democrats.  If you want Independent voters and cross over Republicans, you better select the most qualified and that ain't Obama."

I'm laughing.  You're kidding yourself if you think Independents and Republicans are going to endorse the Clintonian politics we've seen during the past week.

If we want someone to trash opponents, spin us and then tell us they haven't spun us, and repeat lies even after they've been debunked, we can just vote for the GOP.  They do it better; why settle for a cheap imitation.
Bob Johnson's statement is totally off base.   Does Hillary need him out fighting for her.   I thought that was Bill's job.
As a life long VOTING democrat, I figured eventually this primary would all boil down to race and race baiting. Really disgusting. The moron in chief basicly handed the democrats the election on a silver platter with his ineptitude on EVERYTHING, and what do the dems do? Turn it into a racial issue instead of an AMERICAN issue. The dems better turn this thing around and start talking about real issues for ALL AMERICANS, or they are just going to hand it back to the repubs.
Youth voter: you are out in left field.  Barack has never changed his position on Iraq.  It's all about tactics on how to deal with GWB's war (which Hillary has always supported, if not in execution, at least in concept).  Obama has always said that we must be as careful getting out of this entanglement as we were careless getting in (thanks Hillary and the rest of the Democratic lackeys who were negligent by not fully reading and digesting the NIE about the doubt concerning Saddam's lack of WMD).  How to get out of this debacle without hurting our troops and further destabilizing an already disasterous situation in Iraq, that was always the question and still is.  Don't try to simplify this issue with your broad and un-nuanced brush strokes of misunderstanding.

And on a different note, I believe that the vast majority of people in the country, whites, latinos, blacks, natives, Asians, Pacific Islanders, etc. wish to end the racial divide in this country (the atavistic neanderthal trait that all humans possess).  We, the enlightened recognize that the time has come for our country, the United States of America, to lead the world in, this move, this leap of human development.

Obama is the man who inspires the people here and around the world to make this quantem leap.  Through this black man, America shall rid itself of racism and help the rest of the world to do the same.  Only Obama can do this and it is the truly the urgency of now.  Yes we can!

Look, I'm no religious nut and I don't think that Obama is God.  I just think that Obama can inspire people to lose their fear, to hope and to do the right thing.  The Democratic party hacks of yesteryear just don't have the talent to accomplish this.
Obama '08  The man for the future, yes we can!

News Week investigated all the smear campaign " forwarded emails " that are making there way around the web. They found the allegations to be totally false in each and everyone of them.

If the skeptics want to know the truth about Barack Obama's childhood , Religion , and the false allegations that claim he took the oath of office by placing his hand on the Koran;

OBAMA 08
I am black and I am not offended by it. It is sad to think because he is black I have to vote for him. I think he is a great white hope.
Bob Johnson is right, what is Obama record, Black people don't let this guy come in and sd he for what is his  record, I'm all for my black people Obama is a joke what is his record, Go Hillary
For a long time people in America have said that Bill Clinton was the first Black president. If you look at Bill Clinton or at least when I look at him I see a White man. Bill Clinton wasn't the first Black President, Bill Clinton WAS THE FIRST WHITE PRESIDENT THAT CARED ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE!!! I said that to say this. Hillary just made a big mistake by allowing this man Bob Johnson to say what he said at her rally. I think that she feels just because he is Black he has the right to say what he said. This is the same type of OLD, TIRED, WASHINGTON politics that we have been seeing since 2001.All she is doing is further dividing this country, I expect this from Republicans, this is what they do. So when Barack indicates to the country WE NEED A CHANGE YOU ALL NOW KNOW WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT... IF Mrs Hillary Clinton can't control rich contributors that give to her campaign HOW IS SHE GOING TO RUN THIS COUNTRY?????
Bob Johnson’s creation of BET is absolutely nothing to be proud of.
In fact I would say that he has contributed to the negative stereotypes portrayed on television in regards to Afro Americans….

BET has been a sick disease slowly killing our young for too long and this smiling and grinning man is the cause of it… New Era Bobby… you mean nothing to our community.

I am sad that the Clintons have tried to race bait Obama in an effort to cause division between blacks and whites, this is a cruel and dirty trick that I am sure the American people will not stand for…especially the educated and the young.
What other reason could she possibly have in bringing Dr King into this… other than to cause some form of racial tension…

In the past my family were big fans of the Clintons …after this weekend I must admit the hatred for them could not be stronger
As a Mohawk Native American, I do not believe that the Clinton remarks were racially motivated. I believe that this is issue is politically ochestrated  by the Obama camp, to gain as much votes as possiable before South Carolina election.
This is what I call dirty politics by O'bama.
The African American people are a smart, and loyal people, and show support people who support them. The Clintons have always been good to the African American community. The people behind this attack are liberally swiftboating thier efforts, for votes and should be identified, just as much as the Republican effort was attacked. Do not be fooled by all this retoric and false premise all for personal political gains.Maybe the dirt resinating from this non issue, leads directly to the doors of Chris Matthews and Tim Russert, O'Bama lovers.
"Bob Johnson" the same man who is responsible for the movie "Who's Your Caddy"??    Obama has been respectful and has a lot of dignity when it comes to politics.   We don't need an idiot (Bob Johnson) to try to represent our black race.  This is about positive change, not about looking backwards.

New Orleans
Take A Deep breath and think ,its all Media playing this game no one likes Clintons. Its abigger story for them if Clintons go down Media knows Obama can never be a president they are killin three birds with one stone Obama does not stand a chance in front of Maccain Media loves him Chis Methewes worships him .Cliton Down thats a story black candidate for president that is a story Maccain wins that is a story plus a bonus in a form of tax cut for a already RICH MEDIA Political pundits who just recently got eegs on their face and not got enough crow to eat.
I was going to vote for Hillary but I have changed my mind. The reason why I'am changing my vote is that i do not like her politic's. And I am sick & tired of being sick & tired. When a person of color seeks a national office it always about his/her race and if America is ready for an African American to become President of the United States. Why not. The other ones who where not sun kissed have not done such great job either. Everybody deserves to serve regardless of there color/race. And i am not particular happy about the comments she made about MLK in the civil rights era. This again is a sad time in America where a woman of a lighter hue is afraid of a blackman. I guessed we all should embrace Clintonomics and get sit on the back on the bus again. Go figure. Go Obama in 08 and 12........

Bob Johnson made a full of himself buy taking the stage and talking against senator Obama. He is a sell out, a stupid. He doesn't know how to speak to a dignitary.
I don't think he spoke for blacks people. The Clitons have to know that they have lost a lot of people because of this sellout buttkisser of Johnson. I am going to vote for senator Obama.
I just finished watching part of Obamas speech at a church in Las Vegas which was mostly a colored audience. His first sentence referred to MLK.
Who is bringing up the race issue.
Give blame where it is due. Mr Obama is also a racist to use MLK to further his own interest.
Please, No More.
I witnessed all the strife of the 60's and do not want this issue resurrected to further anyone's political campaing.
Tired of the race issue Scottsville KY (Sent Sunday, January 13,

DID you just say COLOR AUDIENCE...WOW

***YEP he said "COLORED" AUDIENCE! WHAT A WASTE OF HUMAN LIFE. It would be so easy for us to sweep it under the rug and not talk about it! Because the truth hurts when we talk about the atrocities whites in this country committed on blacks during the days of slavery, MLK times and throughout the 60s--Try being on the other side of the whip- it hurts even more!
Uncle Bob's and the Clintons are at it again. I wonder what kind of "sweet" business deal Bob Johnson will get out of his naughty and distasteful attack on Senator Obama. You know Uncle Bob doesn't work for free.

I was deeply repulsed by the Clintons' strategy of using a rich Black man to attempt to tear down Senator Obama. Great strategy " Team Billary"! That's just what this country needs.  Every Black Man is a DRUG DEALER and a womanizer... Oops sounds familar Uncle Bob and Cousin Bill?

Now, Uncle Bob has so many major business interests with his RLJ Companies (Hotels, Real Estate Development, Media, Banking, etc. headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland).  He has exploited his "Blackness" to partner with White businessmen to create BET and road blocked other African Americans from creating competing Black TV networks.

Yeah, he's a billionare. But he does not get a free pass.

Let's hit Uncle Bob where it will hurt the most.  In his "FAT" wallet. I recommending a national buycott of BET and all of RLJ's businesses. Just like the historical "Bus Buycott". Cancel your BET and remove your money from his Banks and Do NOT stay at any of his hotels (checkout his google for the locations) or just avoid all Marriott Hotels.

Go work Uncle Bob! Way to go Team Billary! Sounds like you've hit a new low. You just LOST my VOTE and support.
Bob Johnson is a total disgrace to the black community, Am glad his opinion does not count. As for the clintons, whenever you say things always stand by it, instead of blaming others for your comments. This is the third time the clintons have denied what they said. Voting a woman is not really a problem, but voting a liar and coward like Hillary should never be allowed.
                        Go Edward & Obama.
An Open letter to BET Founder Bob Johnson
(January 15, 2008)Email to a friend | Print Friendly     Dear Bob,  the comments you in made in attacking Sen. Obama this past Sunday at a South Carolina church before your introduction of Sen. Hillary Clinton demonstrates that it doesn’t matter how much money you have it can’t buy class or, dignity.

Bob, while you were shucking, grinning and jiving in front of the Clintons, are you that stupid that you didn’t care that you came across as a bootlicking Uncle Tom? Your attack on Sen. Obama continues to prove how ruthless you continue to be.

In your own words which I will now quote you by, “As an African American, I am frankly insulted the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues — when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood; I won't say what he was doing, but he said it in his book — when they have been involved," Johnson said.

We all know that Sen. Obama wrote about his teenage drug use — marijuana, and alcohol in his memoir "Dreams from My Father." That’s old news. Bob, for you to attack Sen. Obama’s character shows what a coon you really are. Bob, you are the founder of BET which is the laughing stock of African Americans who care about positives images. Yes, you are successful as a capitalist but a failure in having any morals and helping to support your own race.

The fact that Sen. Clinton or anyone would want or accept your endorsement is appalling and for me calls their basic character, let alone judgment, into question.

Over the last 25 years you and BET have done more to propagate some of the most harmful, destructive, and degradation of African Americans in the history of popular culture.

The booty shaking videos, misogony, gangsterism, violence, alcohol and drug use you allowed to air on BET on your way to becoming a billionaire was all done for the love of money. And now YOU want to take cheap shots at Sen.Obama?.

I am constantly amazed at how you are allowed to speak and move in decent society. But, I guess in your case, money triumphs morals.

After seeing you put on your best Stephen Fetchit routine this Sunday in front of Sen. Clinton as she sat back and enjoyed campaigning with you, I’m understanding a lot better why the country is calling for Sen. Obama and change!

Signed,

I made comments on this when it was a hot topic on jan 13th.  However, you didn't post them. So I suppose you didn't like what I had to say..Anyway, I hope you sent them to the Clintons and believe you probably did because they immediately tried to cool of things after they realized that they would also need the black vote if Hillary becomes the party nominee..  I along with many friends who were once supporters of Hillary, will not vote for her even if she gets the party nomination.  I sill say that the Clintons think they own black folks as if we are their slaves.
I am totally outraged that Bob Johnson even thinks that we, African American, would be supportive of the Clinton campaign simply because HE endorses H. Clinton. Listen, white America, most African Americans think B. Johnson is a dispicable and dirty joke. He sold us to "massa" long ago and we haven't forgotten (Bob Johnson sells BET to MTV Productions).

Johnson, has made a fortune, furnishing AND facilitating the low self esteems of young black girls all over the world. Its funny that, he asks us not to vote based on gender and race, well he has voted for the exploitation of BLACK WOMEN(a gender and race, that means much to many) for the last 25 years. I am simply not voting for Hilary at this point because she even thinks she WE(BLACK WOMEN) are foolish enough support anyone who allows the endorsement of her campaign by a MYSOGINISTIC PIG like Bob Johnson.

CONGRATULATIONS GOES TO THE ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR, YOU'VE PRODUCED ANOTHER FOOL AND IT'S NOT A NAKED BLACK WOMAN IN A "TIP DRILL" VIDEO THIS TIME!!

OBAMA 08'.....what you think about that Johnson!!
