McCain on that new mailer v. Romney

From NBC’s Bethany Thomas
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After a town hall of about 1,000 people, roughly half of them students, in the gymnasium of Kalamazoo Christian High School, McCain spoke to the media about his new attack mailer against Romney in South Carolina. As he did in New Hampshire after the McCain campaign put out an attack television commercial, the senator defended his actions as responses to previous attacks.

“We had to respond to negative campaigning…We will respond,” he said. “Now, we won’t go tit-for-tat, but we will respond, and we will make clear that this kind of negative campaigning didn’t work for him in Iowa when he attacked Governor Huckabee, didn’t work in New Hampshire when his campaign attacked me, and I don’t think it’s going to work in Michigan where he’s attacking me, and it won’t work in South Carolina.  So, we will respond in a very forceful fashion because we know unfortunately that these charges have to be responded to, but we’re not going to go tit-for-tat with him.”

In New Hampshire, the McCain camp released a television commercial that quoted local newspapers speaking unfavorably of Romney after the Romney camp put an ad out that attacked McCain’s positions on tax cuts and immigration.

This time, the South Carolina mailer seems less provoked than the dual two weeks ago. When a reporter asked what exactly McCain was responding to, the senator answered, “Which one? Just choose. There’s a stack of mailers this high that attack me, literally this high that have flooded South Carolina for the last six months.”

One reporter noted that the new mailer, which takes aim on Romney’s tax record, doesn’t seem to be a response ad, but rather a direct attack on Romney.

“It’s not negative campaigning,” McCain said. “I think it’s what his record is, particularly his positions on many issues, whether it be withdrawal on Iraq, he said he supported the surge when it’s clear that he supported withdrawal. He said he supports Detroit, and yet he wanted an increase in taxes on SUVs. We could go down the list, those are matters of record and we’re attack- we will point out those matters of record. It’s a tough business. I said it in the debate the other night. It’s a tough business for all the candidates that are running. When millions of dollars are spent attacking us, we are going to have to respond.”

NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann adds from Columbia, S.C. that ever since a push-polling effort derailed John McCain's 2000 presidential bid, negativity has been a little bit prickly for Republicans in South Carolina. This week, the McCain campaign even launched a "Truth Squad" designed to rapidly respond to potential negative attacks in the days leading up to Saturday's GOP primary here.

But the new mailer hitting South Carolina post boxes shows that Team McCain plays offense as well as defense. The brochure, which touts the Arizona senator's fiscal record, also takes a direct hit at Mitt Romney for his tax policies as Massachusetts’s governor.

"Mitt Romney raised taxes by 700 million," reads the mailing. The bullet points that follow claim that Romney provided taxpayer funding for abortions and that he failed to endorse the Bush tax cut plan of 2003. (McCain himself has taken heat for voting against the plan in 2001 and 2003.)

The Romney campaign responded by noting how the piece hit mailboxes in the same week that McCain's campaign launched a much-publicized "Truth Squad" intended to fend off negative attacks. "The level of righteous indignation that came out of those people three days ago just makes it all the more ironic," said Romney spokesman Will Holley.

Team Romney also questions the validity of the claims, calling into question the $700 million number and challenging sources of the information cited in the ad. Holley calls the ad "as sloppy as it is factually incorrect."

The McCain campaign says that the contrast piece is accurate and fair in light of Romney's use of negative ads against their candidate throughout the primary season. 'We've been attacked enough times by Mitt Romney to justify getting out front to set the record straight," said McCain spokesman B.J. Boling.

Sounds like another cover up by McCain.  Why not just say, yea we were scared and so we thought we would spread some negative propaganda.  Romney is running ads about the facts on his opponents, but when asked about it he doesn't blame his opponent for the reason he is running them.  Maybe McCain should have stooped to Jr. High level and "just show it to the reporters" like Huckabee.  So much for being a Straight Talker McCain.
What a joke.  I'm tired of the distortions.  I sure hope McCain doesn't win this or I will be voting a different direction in November.
Mitt Romney,

Or should I say Flip Flopper Romney!

Mitt Romney's  Flip Flop Record

ABORTION

From the Left:

Romney ran against Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1994. During a debate, Romney declared: "I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time that my mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a US Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years we should sustain and support it."
- Boston Globe, March 2, 2006

"I respect and will protect a woman's right to choose."
-2002 Questionnaire for the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL)
Boston Globe, July 3, 2005

From the Right:

"I am pro-life. I believe that abortion is the wrong choice except in cases of incest, rape, and to save the life of the mother. I wish the people of America agreed, and that the laws of our nation could reflect that view. But while the nation remains so divided over abortion, I believe that the states, through the democratic process, should determine their own abortion laws and not have them dictated by judicial mandate."
- Boston Globe, Op-Ed, July 26, 2005

More from the Right:

"Every decision I have made as Governor in a very liberal state has been on the side of favoring life." – Governor Romney

STEM CELL RESEARCH

From the Left:

"Romney has decided to support experimentation on surplus frozen embryos from in-vitro fertilization procedures."
- National Review Online, February 11, 2005

"At a campaign appearance at Brandeis University in June 2002, Romney strongly endorsed stem cell research."
- Boston Globe, December 17, 2006  Read the article

From the Center:

"Governor Mitt Romney set off a storm of criticism yesterday after he declared in a published interview that he favored banning a specific type of stem cell research. Scientists and the leader of the state Senate accused him of trying to block a promising avenue of research, even as antiabortion groups assailed him for declaring that he did not object to stem cell research involving embryos from fertility clinics."
- Boston Globe, February 11, 2005  Read the article

From the Right:

"I studied the issue for many months, and entered into conversation with experts from across the nation who were looking for consensus solutions, like Stanford's Dr. William Hurlbut.  In the end, I became persuaded that the stem-cell debate was grounded in a false premise, and that the way through it was around it: by the use of scientific techniques that could produce the equivalent of embryonic stem cells but without cloning, creating, harming, or destroying developing human lives."
- Governor Mitt Romney, Op-Ed, "A Stem-Cell Solution," National Review Online, June 15, 2007

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

From the Left:

"When he ran for governor in 2002, Romney said he supported expanding access to the emergency contraception pill, a high dose of hormones that women can take to prevent pregnancy up to five days after sex . . . On a questionnaire Planned Parenthood gave to the gubernatorial candidates in 2002, Romney answered 'yes' to the question, 'Do you support efforts to increase access to emergency contraception?' "
- Boston Globe, July 7, 2005

From the Right:

"Yesterday I vetoed a bill that the Legislature forwarded to my desk. Though described by its sponsors as a measure relating to contraception, there is more to it than that. The bill does not involve only the prevention of conception: The drug it authorizes would also terminate life after conception."
- Governor Mitt Romney, Op-Ed, "Why I Vetoed The Contraception Bill," Boston Globe, July 26, 2005  Read the article

GAY RIGHTS

From the Left:

"All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual orientation. While he does not support gay marriage, Mitt Romney believes domestic partnership status should be recognized in a way that includes the potential for health benefits and rights of survivorship."
- Romney's 2002 campaign website

"Mitt and Kerry Wish You a Great Pride Weekend! All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference"
- A flier handed out at "Gay Pride" by the Romney/Healey Campaign  See the flier here

"We have discussed a number of important issues such as the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which I have agreed to co-sponsor, and if possible broaden to include housing and credit, and a bill to create a federal panel to find ways to reduce gay and lesbian youth suicide, which I also support. One issue I want to clarify concerns [grammar in context] President Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell, don't pursue" military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation's military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share…"
- Governor Romney letter to Log Cabin Republicans, October 6, 1994  Read the letter here

From the Right:

Lopez: "And what about the 1994 letter to the Log Cabin Republicans where you indicated you would support the Federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) and seemed open to changing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military? Are those your positions today?

Gov. Romney: "No. I don't see the need for new or special legislation. My experience over the past several years as governor has convinced me that ENDA would be an overly broad law that would open a litigation floodgate and unfairly penalize employers at the hands of activist judges...As for military policy and the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, I trust the counsel of those in uniform who have set these policies over a dozen years ago. I agree with President Bush's decision to maintain this policy and I would do the same."

MARRIAGE AMENDMENT

From the Left:

In 2002, before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court declared same-sex marriage protected by the Constitution, Romney denounced as "too extreme" the effort by pro-family groups to enact a preemptive state Marriage Protection Amendment prohibiting homosexual marriage, civil unions and same-sex public employee benefits.
- Boston Phoenix, May 14-20, 2004

From the Right:

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough: "Do you support a national constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage?"

Governor Romney: "Boy, I sure do. You know, that's a topic that's really, I think, very important to the country because marriage is not just about adults. Marriage is about the development and nurturing of kids, and in my view, the development of a child is enhanced by having a mom and dad. And so, I think it's very important that we have a national standard because marriage is a status. You get married in one place and then you move to another, you're still married at least in the eyes of the community and the children and the benefits may not follow you, but ultimately we're going to have one standard of marriage in this country and that standard ought to be one man and one woman."
- MSNBC's "Morning Joe" September 17, 2007

GUN RIGHTS

From the Left:

"He [Romney] is a supporter of the federal assault weapons ban."
- Romney 2002 campaign website

More from the Left:

In his 1994 US Senate run, Romney backed two gun-control measures strongly opposed by the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups: the Brady Bill, which imposed a five-day waiting period on gun sales, and a ban on certain assault weapons.

"That's not going to make me the hero of the NRA," Romney told the Boston Herald in 1994.

At another campaign stop that year, he told reporters: "I don't line up with the NRA."
- Boston Globe, January 14, 2007  Read the article

From the Right:

"Americans should have the right to own and possess firearms as guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution," said Governor Romney. "I'm proud to be among the many decent, law-abiding men and women who safely use firearms."
- Governor Romney, News Release, January 12, 2007

WAITING PERIODS FOR GUNS

From the Left:

Regarding the Brady Bill which required waiting periods to buy a handgun, Romney stated, "I don't think [the waiting period] will have a massive effect on crime but I think it will have a positive effect."
- Boston Herald, August 1, 1994

From the Right:

"Romney says he still backs the ban on assault weapons, but he won't say whether he stands by the Brady Bill.  And after the gun show tour, his campaign declined to say whether he would still describe himself as a supporter of tough gun laws."
- Boston Globe, January 14, 2007  Read the article

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE

From the Left:

"The minimum wage is important to our economy and Mitt Romney supports minimum wage increase, at least in line with inflation."
- Romney 2002 campaign website

From the Right:

Governor Mitt Romney yesterday rejected the Legislature's plan to raise the state minimum wage to $8 an hour over two years, angering Democratic lawmakers and advocates who accused him of abandoning a 2002 campaign pledge to significantly boost the pay of low-wage workers.

IMMIGRATION

From the Left:

In a November 2005 interview with the Boston Globe, Romney described immigration proposals by McCain and others as "quite different" from amnesty, because they required illegal immigrants to register with the government, work for years, pay taxes, not take public benefits, and pay a fine before applying for citizenship.

"That's very different than amnesty, where you literally say, 'OK, everybody here gets to stay,' " Romney said in the interview. "It's saying you could work your way into becoming a legal resident of the country by working here without taking benefits and then applying and then paying a fine."

Romney did not specifically endorse McCain's bill, saying he had not yet formulated a full position on immigration. But he did speak approvingly of efforts by McCain and Bush to solve the nation's immigration crisis, calling them "reasonable proposals."

Romney also said in the interview that it was not "practical or economic for the country" to deport the estimated 12 million immigrants living in the US illegally. "These people contribute in many cases to our economy and to our society," he said. "In some cases, they do not. But that's a whole group we're going to have to determine how to deal with."
- Boston Globe, March 16, 2007  Read the article

From the Right:

In his appeals to conservative voters, Romney has made the Arizona senator's work on immigration one of his favorite targets. When McCain and other senators unveiled the latest reform bill two weeks ago, Romney called it the "wrong approach" and immediately launched a television ad slamming "amnesty" for illegal immigrants.
- Boston Globe, June 1, 2007  Read the article

TAXES

From the Left:

"Governor Romney…imposed a slew of fee hikes and tax 'loophole' closures….The largest of these was $259 million worth of fee hikes in FY 2004, the bulk of which came from higher Registry of Deeds fees.  Smaller fee hikes, including higher charges for boaters and golfers, we imposed in FY 2003 and FY 2005.  Romney also sought $128 million worth of so-called tax loophole closures for FY 2004; $70 million for FY 2005; and $170 million for FY 2006, which were later reduced to $85 million due to backlash from business leaders."
- Club for Growth's White Paper on Mitt Romney

"Romney continues to oppose the flat tax with harsh language, calling the tax 'unfair.'"
- Club for Growth's White Paper on Mitt Romney

Romney didn't support President Bush's tax cuts in 2003.  That earned him praise from liberal Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA)
- Boston Globe, April 11, 2003.

From the Right:

"I said no to a tax hike; raising taxes hurts working people and scares away jobs. I also said no to more borrowing; borrowing just shifts our problems to the backs of our kids...Instead, I went after waste, inefficiency, duplication, and patronage."
- Governor Romney, Boston Globe, October 24, 2005

NO NEW TAXES PLEDGE

From the Left:

In 2002, Romney broke with his predecessor, Jane Swift, and Republican governors before her by declining to sign a written vow not to raise taxes once in office.

- Boston Globe, January 5, 2007  Read the article

From the Right:

Almost five years after he refused to sign a "no new taxes" pledge during his campaign for governor, Mitt Romney announced yesterday that he had done just that, as his campaign for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination began in earnest.
- Boston Globe, January 5, 2007  Read the article

CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS

From the Left:

Governor Romney has changed his position on key campaign finance reform issues several times during public life. During his 1994 Senate campaign, he held far left positions that advocated for abolishing PACs and creating strict campaign spending limits.

- Club for Growth's White Paper on Mitt Romney

From the Right:

As he runs for President, Romney abandoned his previous stance and has come out as a harsh critic of McCain-Feingold, and those presidential candidates who support it. His transformation has even propelled him to call for the legislation's repeal.

Romney's Grand List of "Accomplishments:"

*Thousands of Americans out of work due to Romney's grand Forced Buy-Outs of American grown companies. Thousands More Americans Forced to take cuts in pay to keep their jobs after Romney's Forced Buy-Out's new owners take over.

*Massachusetts left as ONLY STATE to post ZERO GAIN IN EMPLOYED RESIDENTS during Romney's 4 years as governor, 3RD from the Bottom in Creating New Jobs during the same time span, would have been 2nd from the bottom except Katrina blew Louisiana away.

*Romney allowed his office as governor to fund Gay/Lesbian SEX-ED to GRADE-SCHOOL CHILDREN as young as KINDERGARTENERS--with NO PARENTAL NOTIFICATION OR CONSENT! NO U.S. POLITICIAN SHOULD ASSUME SUCH CONTROL OVER CHILDREN/THEIR PARENTS!!

*While claiming to be PRO-LIFE "Romney's Healthcare Plan" has $50.00 co-pay for elective abortions.

*Just months before announcing his campaign, Romney 'donated' $100s of $1000s of dollars to Major Conservative Groups, Groups Romney NEVER donated to prior, nor ANY GROUP like them, according to record. Kevin Madden, Romney's spokesman, claimed it "demonstrated his convictions." Right, Romney's convictions that his money could buy endorsements. Some of the organizations include: Federalist Society, Heritage Foundation, Massachusetts Citizens for Life, National Review Institute, Family Institute-associated with Family Research Center and Focus on the Family (New York Times, 03/11/07).

*While claiming to be against Embryonic Stem-cell Research, Romney is investing in it. He could have sold his stock or placed limitations on his trust (Boston Herald, 08/15/07).

*Just recently, before a crowd of strangers and reporters, Romney claimed his loyal wife, possible "First Lady" of the United States, is "HOT" licking his finger and making the "sss" sound ("First Read," MSNBC.msn.com). Unbearable SEXIST!

* "Human Events" named Romney as the most pro-abortion, pro gay-rights in the nation for the last decade.

* Romney made the TOP 10 (#8) RINO LIST (Republican in name only). (Human Events)

*Romney continually loses it when asked questions by voters that he doesn't like. He has gotten hot under the collar and stood to leave the room, walked away--just leaving voters standing there, stammered--shaking--waving his arms around, spewing forth vile name-calling and accusations of voters. We can expect NO better from Romney if he gets the chance to deal with foreign dignitaries who ask him questions he doesn't like, or that he doesn't want to answer...and he blames Huckabee of being irritable and testy???

* While thousands of Americans are forced out of their jobs, or forced to take cuts in pay, due to the actions of Romney's Forced Buy-Outs of American grown companies, analysts who track Buy-Out Firms' compensation claim Romney's likely exceeded 500 Million $$$. (New York Times, 03/11/07--that should buy Romney a few more attack ads).

* While Romney NOW touts his plan to "strengthen American families/homes, just recently, as governor of Massachusetts, Romney's office funded 'dances' where CHILDREN as young as 12 YEARS OF AGE, could 'meet-up' with ADULT Gays/Lesbians/Transgenders/Bi-sexuals...NO, I am NOT homophobic. I just don't agree that THIS was in the best interest of "family values." If Romney chose to do no better than this as governor, we can expect no better from him as president.

* Check out YouTube's flick from the Log Cabin Republicans, a Gay-Rights group, for how Romney has treated them in his bid for the presidency.

* Romney chose, for advisors, J.Cofer Black--vice chairman of BLACKWATER, chairman of THE BLACK GROUP LLC. Black--who failed America miserably in his appointment to get rid of Taliban/Bin Laden BEFORE/DURING 911. Black--who has already been criticized for wanting to give TOO MUCH POWER TO 'PRIVATE SECURITY FIRMS.' And, Hoekstra--On the Inteligence Committee while FBI/CIA were playing 'keep-away' with vital information BEFORE/DURING 911. And Romney wants us to trust him with our the lives of our military??

* Romney has continually frustrated both Christians and LDS with his remarks about his religion. While claiming he believes in God,Jesus and the Bible, Romney makes NO clarification that LDS-God is "MAN" of flesh and bones (eg Moses 6:57, 7:35; LDS Doctrine and Covenants 130:22). LDS-Christ is "spirit-brother of Lucifer" (eg Moses 5:13, [LDS]Gospel Principles, revised 1979,ch3 and throughout LDS teachings).

Yeah, Romney's really accomplished a lot. Too bad this isn't all of it.
Good grief.  I love that McCain claims that Romney's "contrast" ads are negative, then goes and puts out his own...

“It’s not negative campaigning,” McCain said. “I think it’s what his record is, particularly his positions on many issues"

Isn't this EXACTLY what Romney has said about his own ads?  Pointing out differences in their records?

McCain (and Huckabee) need to stop acting like they are more innocent than Romney, more pious, more "kind and pure and positive".  They are none of these.  As this article (and these ads) make perfectly clear, all of the men running for the republican nomination are doing the EXACT SAME THING when it comes to advertising... they are all comparing their records and explaining why their own is supperior, they are all releasing negative/contrast ads (including Huckabee, although he used the media to release his rather than paying for it), and they are all criticizing each other in meetings, debates, etc.

The holier-than-thou/I'm a nicer campaigner act is getting really old.  We've all seen McCain in the debates- his staff finally told him to cool it after last Saturday's debate because his negative attitude. barely-controlled temper, and childish attacks/interruptions were entirely unappealing to voters!

We aren't stupid, the candidates need to realize that we can see through this facade... on all of them!
Only by breaking the iron triangle of big money, special interest lobbyists, and the legislation they buy, can sovereignty be restored to the American people.

Only John McCain can make this happen!!
Is it any wonder that even the State of Arizona does not support McCain! Romney is the Fix, soon America will agree!
hihihihihhihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihihi
Amazing. Romney comes out with "comparison" ads and everyone is up in arms. McCain comes out with "peronal attack" ads and it's a blip in the media. Do your homework people. Romney is the only one with a track record to turn around our trillions of dollars in debt. He's the only one who understands the economy. He's the only one who will do something about our illegal immigration problems. Wake up America! Do your homework.
McCain is a mean spirited snake.  Unlikes Romney's comparison adds, his truley is an attack, and a decietful one at that.  Mitt did not raise taxes by 700 million, he raised fees by 240 million.  That is the record, what McCain says is a lie, and the McCain campaign knows it.   Romney did support the Bush tax cuts, where as McCain voted against them TWICE.  The irony of this is just unbelievable.

I used to have so much respect for McCain, especially given what he sacrificed for our country in Vietnam, but now I see he is just an angry old man who justifies his lies by saying he must respond.  It is so sad to see an American hero turn himself into something so decietful.
McCain & Huck are hypocrites.  McCain is using the same defense on his ads as Mitt used to defend his.  It sounds like Mitt's were actually backed up with facts.
McCain & Huck are sly though because they attack Mitt with the justification that they have to fend of Mitt's multi-million dollar "attacks."   Has Mitt even compared himself to McCain in SC?
McCain is a joke; I keep losing trust in the guy.
McCain is huge idiot, if he is nomimated... I will encourage other Republicans to stay home.
mccain...what a joke. taking the "moral" high-ground with his best buddy huckachuck in IA/NH only to sell his sould in SC with proactive negativity. some straight-talker...only when convenient it seems. i wish there could be more pieces like this to expose these guys that are getting credit from the MS press for all their righteous talk of positive campaigning and then the do the same things they condemn. romney is far and away the most qualified leader on either side of the race. please michigan, do the right thing. get mitt rommney back in the race.
robert j. utah,
use some thought already...enough with the copy paste. very boring.
Is there anyone actually moderating this site.  Will you please stop bone heads like Robert J. from Utah from posting the same stupid crap over and over again on all these sites.
It is time for us to start thinking “outside the box”, if you will.  America has never experienced such a condensed nominating process such as this.  Team Romney should consider teaming up with Fred Thompson or Duncan Hunter. Offer one of them V.P.  Show America the Dream Team.  Do this before Super Tuesday.  The FREE MEDIA exposure would be amazing.  This would give us a huge boost nationally, as well as assure the National Republican Party, that Romney is legitimate.  These are new times with regards to politics.  Let’s really shake things up and put an end to Mr. McCain and Mr. Huckabee
As a Washington Republican - I hope that our state will have the chance to vote for the best Republican, Mitt Romney, and that Michigan gives him his chance for a win so he can continue on.  I'm not sure where McCain got the facts for his negative brochure for Mitt as I have read numerous newspaper and magazine articles which all state that Mitt didn't raise taxes for the people, that he cut the number of state workers overall while employing a larger number of state patrolmen and balanced Massachusett's budget, leaving it with a surplus instead of a deficit - which seems to contradict McCain's claims.  I see McCain as a life-long Washington politician who would say or do anything to achieve his long dream of being president, especially since this is his last shot with his age.  (Just think, if he wins - he'll be 73 when sworn in and 77 after his first term.)   What I also find interesting is a video of McCain when he was campaigning in Iowa - singing "BombIran, BombIran, BombIran" to a Christmas tune in front of an audience - totally inappropriate!  What kind of a president would he be?  Very scary.
Robert J of Utah, this is the 15th site you've posted this out of context stuff and it's really not good for the forum...

Your lack of social etiquette reminds me of the guy that leaves a tr_d in the toilet, has 50 things in the express lane, and parks in a handicap stall.

You're giving the good folk of Utah a bad name; move to DC where that kind of behavior is acceptable…

Lastly, I image that you hate Mormons because the cute Mormon girl laughed at you when you tried to ask her out and now hating all things Mormon, including Romney are your sole purpose of your existence.
This is a comment board, not a "post your article board"  Keep your comments brief as, to be honest, I didn't get past your 2nd sentence robert j utah
How do I join the 'Truth' squad?
Robert - I'm glad no one has the time to read your incredibly insane posting on Romney.  I think I feel asleep a quarter of the way through. The truth is that the GOP doesn't have any good candidates this year.  McCain is tired and a one-trick pony, Thompson is half asleep, Huckabee is slapping people in the face with his religion, and Guiliani is too liberal to get the nomination.  The fact is that Romney is the GOP's only good candidate, but everyone is too narrow-minded to know it.  If the GOP nominate McCain or Huckabee, they will get exactly what they deserve...a landslide loss in November.
Romney is going to speak in Grand Rapids,MI today. His best bud Dick Devose(eric Princes ,of Blackwater fame)the head of Amway owns Grand Rapids. So ironic is Mitt ---I will bring back all the jobs that have been lost in MI----Dick Devose sent Amway to china along with MI jobs.Has Dick promised Mitt he will close those money making plants in Cina?God these people are twisted stinking liars.

McCain's Handica

What is the main handicap standing between John McCain and the nomination and presidency?

http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=1529

.
Typical McCain. It reminds me of passing a car lot named "Honest Johns Used Cars" when I was a kid. My dad pointed it out and said we should be wary of anyone that has to work that hard to convince people he is honest. McCain sure spends alot of time talking about truth and honesty to be so backhanded and flip floppy! He lies, applies double standards "liberally" and changes his tune to suit the audience.  He is not the only one trying to fit the voters, but he is the one that vehemently denies doing it...AS he is doing it!

McCain talked up the need for positive campaigning, then repeatedly attacked Romney in the first New Hampshire debate (he played nice in the 2nd debate because the polls told him that was the best course). Now he lashes out unprovoked with negative campaign mailers and blames it on Romney.  McCain will do or say whatever it takes to win...then he will do or say whatever the heck he wants to, period.  He is not running for president, he is running for King!  He is as liberal as any Repbublican could be. Of course he will reach out to the Democrats...many of them are counted among his best friends. He is just another Ass decked-out in the latest Elephant fashion!
McCain is an absolute hypocrite!  Talk about Romney being a phony...McCain takes the cake!  McCain's are personal attacks.  Romney's are squarely centered on the issues at hand!
"The Romney campaign responded by noting how the piece hit mailboxes in the same week that McCain's campaign launched a much-publicized "Truth Squad" intended to fend off negative attacks."
--Yeah, yeah, we get it, people don't like negative attacks, but we sure do respond well to them.  Look, negative attacks (Democrats and Republicans) are okay so long as they 1) are truthful and 2) don't hit 'below-the-belt'--although it is technically okay for Clinton because she's a woman.  There is no conflict in what McCain's campaign is doing.
This copy/paste idiot Robert has got to go. Can MSNBC not do anything about that? McCain's a hypocrite, a warmonger, and a liar. If he says "my friends" one more time I'll go crazy.
Holy Hippocrite Batman!  It's hillarious that McCain is defending his mailer with two arguments that jaxtaposed seem counter-intuitive.  First he says that the mailer is in response to attacks from Romney (refering to commercials in which Romney indicated perceived flaws in McCains record).  Then he says the mailer isn't an attack because it only addresses Romney's record and "point[ing] out those matters or record" doesn't constitute negative campaigning.  If the second argument is true, why would the first argument be necessary.  If Romney's ads highlighting McCain's record shouldn't be considered negative or attack ads, why would they merit a response highlighting Romeny's record (rather than correcting distortions of McCain's)?  Apparently talking about someone's record is only negative/attack campaigning when it is Romney talking about McCain's record.
Their own party hate both these guys. One because he's a Mormon and the other because he actually went up against his own party several times. But in the end,(no pun intended) he crawled ten miles up Bushs butt, so I don't understand why they hate this guy. Also,Mr.Befuddled McCain has Liebermans endorsement, which is the kiss of death for anyone.
America, if you want to keep the war going and the economy the way it is, and boarders wide open, then go ahead and vote for John McBush!
McCain the liar - distorting the truth again.  Go Rudy.
McCain's leadership is in the area of throwing the "F" bomb at those he disagrees with.  Not the kind of guy I want running for President!
MittRomneys actuall accomplishments in business and his actual record in office prove he is the only bonafide conservative. McCain is losing amoung republicans and conservatives and is desparate to keep enough independents hoodwinked, so he has to distract them with an offensive mailer.
Vote Romney
McCain is pathethic. He is such a hypocrite. He does the exact thing he accuses his competitor of and is quick to justify himself. He and Huckabee both pretend to have values and standards, but their actions sink to the lowest of the low. They are good at playing the media for what it's worth. It will be interesting to watch SC where McCain and Huckabee will no longer have their symbiotic relationship at work.
Wow....in your attempt to frame Mitt Romney as a "flip-flopper" you go so far as to show contradictions in answers on his favorite book?!?!  Talk about straining for gnats!  I have MANY "favorite" books and I bet you do too.  And yet with your "fair and accurate" reporting I'm supposed to believe that not a single of your extensive bullet-proof quotes weren't cherry-picked by you to show Romney in a negative light?  Uh...sorry but I don't believe you.
Wow, what a shocker!  The majority of these comments are actually FOR Mitt.  I didn't think that the average American had the patience and fortitude to pick through all the subtle misperceptions and/or blatant lies about Romney spread by America's newest enemy, our unashamedly liberal media.  My faith in my fellow Americans is being restored!
Anyway, yeah it does stink to high heaven of hypocrisy that McCain accuses Romney of "dirty politics" when Romney ran contrast ads (and get real, they were only contrast ads) on McCain and Huckabee in Iowa and New Hampshire and MCcain claimed that that they were "attack ads" and now McCain runs negative, distorting ads about Romney but says he's playing fair.  What a croc!  When does a political ad become an "attack ad".  When it tries to degrade a person's character and not just their record.  You CAN critique a person's "performance" (their political record) and not critique the person but when the intent of an ad is to say "you're an idiot", it's an attack ad.  I think McCain understands national defense better than anyone (understandably, and as an Air Force officer I truly admire him for his service to our country) but America needs more than just a strong defense.  We need someone who understands economics, someone who has proven SUCCESSFUL at it, and someone who can set a gracious yet confident/strong image of America throughout the world.  Mitt is our man.
WE'RE THE WORKERS HERE IN MICHIGAN TRYING TO KEEP OUR JOBS THAT WILL PAY THE PRICE FOR A MCCAIN/HUCKABEE NOMINATION--...OBVIOUSLY NOT THE REST OF YOU YAHOO LIBERALS....

GERIATRIC McCAIN AND POPULIST HUCKABEE ARE DEMOCRATIC/INDIE LIBERAL PAWNS and will run our ECONOMY HERE IN MICHIGAN, and throughout the rest of the country for that matter, INTO THE GROUND!!! (As well as everything else we conservative Republicans — AND INTELLIGENT MICHIGAN VOTERS /AMERICANS—-stand for!!)

Read what Rush Limbaugh (a TRUE CONSERVATIVE) had to say about these two liberal plants today at rushlimbaugh.com.

I just did, and WOW!! Thank goodness there are still people like Rush who actually display a wealth of intelligence and logical thinking in this day of shallow, one-dimensional politics and thought....

There are enough of us TRUE REAGAN REPUBLICANS out here in Michigan and across America that have enough COMMON SENSE and care enough what happens to our ECONOMY (among a lot of other issues like lower taxes, strong trade, strong immigration policies, strong national defense, strong families, conservative judges, generating jobs, etc., etc.) to vote for a candidate that espouses TRUE REAGAN CONSERVATIVE policies (which ARE NOT DEAD!!)!

Michigan, wake up!! I've personally listened to all the candidates (REP & DEM!), evaluated what they've said, and have determined that WITHOUT A DOUBT, that candidate is MITT ROMNEY!! ROMNEY is the ONLY candidate that can go the distance against these other liberal monkeys and that HAS and CAN make the CHANGES that our country (AND OUR ECONOMY HERE IN MICHIGAN!!) so desperately needs at this time.

I will vote for Hillary or Obama before I will vote for liberal snakes like McCain or Huckabee….. After all, what’s the difference between any of these four Socialists??
Truth Squad? Sounds like the book 1984 to me.
I sure hope the good people of Michigan can see that Mitt Romney is the ONLY qualified candidate who knows how to make the changes necessary to pull you out of financial trouble.  He has a history of actually DOING it.  We watched him first-hand during the 2002 Olympics, and his skill and leadership were amazing.  He is a true hero here in Utah, and among hundreds of other companies who received the benefit of his incredible talent.  We Love You Mitt!!!!!
Robert J from Utah:

When your write more than a paragraph or two. I just SSSSCCCRRRRRROOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLL right down to someone actually engaging on the article. Start your own blog. As Shakespeare said, "Thou doth protest too much."  Translation:such obsession betrays your argument.
I am glad to see Mitt Romney get a fair shake at reporting. He has great depth of character and will surround himself with men of similar talent. He is a refreshing drink of water
McCain will come in LAST in Arizona, his home state, because we know him! If he is the nominee I just won't vote for the first time in 50+ years.

I have carefully listed to all the Republican debates and read all the pros and cons about them all. GO MITT!!!
