Michelle Obama defends husband's record

Posted: Monday, January 14, 2008 12:51 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
FLORENCE, S.C. -- After this weekend's furious back and forth between the Clinton and Obama campaigns over the consistency of Obama's anti-war record, the Illinois senator's wife is jumping to his defense.

"His opponents will say that he wasn't always against the war," she said today here. "I'm like, 'Where have you been?'"

Obama went on to say that her husband's rivals base the claim on the fact that he did not have to cast a vote during the 2003 authorization of the war because he was not yet a senator.  "What they fail to tell you," she said, "is that where Barack was trying to get to the U.S. Senate." The tough Illinois primary race he faced, she added, made his opposition to the war all the more politically risky at the time.

Despite that risk, she said, "He looked at everything everybody else looked at, and he said this is going to cost us millions of dollars and thousands of lives," she said.

Speaking to an audience of more 300 mostly black voters at Francis Marion University here, Obama scoffed at the notion that the choice between her husband and Hillary Clinton (whom she did not mention by name) is a nuanced one.

"I get confused when people are like, 'We have so many choices. I'm so confused. I don't know, who should I vote for?'" she said, mimicking a waffling voter with a babyish tone. "I'm like 'Huh?'

"We have two choices: One, same old thing. Same thing that hasn't worked for my lifetime. Same people, same game, same thing. And then we have Barack. Those are our choices."

OOOhhhh Obama must be God if HE figured out that the war would cost lots of lives and money....give me a break! He has no firm ground to stand on- he's too inexperienced and too vague.
She's Right.

Do we end the Bush/Clinton Era? Or do we start a new one?

I say we start a new era, now.
Awesome. Thank God the Obamas are fighting back now.  The Clintons have been playing a very dirty game without a referee.
Each era has its own problem. This is an era for diplomacy not war. in order to abate teorism,we need a fresh start. enough of the Clinton/Bush era.
J...evidently he was and is right.  Let's not minimize the lives and the cost of this unending war.  I am glad Michelle is pushing back.
The Clintons are all washed up and instead of capitalizing on her great record, Clinton is blaming others for things she says.
Then the other people who have been in Washington the longest has these great ideas on how now they can fix it.  They didn't fix it before and their time has expired.
Experience is defined by playing the political game better...give me a break.  If her record is so great why don't she tell us about it and stop bashing the other democrats and making a mockery of our party.
Where have you been Mrs. Obama?
Your husband said there were WMD in Iraq, even though he said he was against the war in 2002.
Furthermore, he voted to fund the war, right along with everybody else, up until just last year.
You're a very nice lady Mrs. Obama, and we understand your desire to defend Barrack.
However his record, which includes 130 "present" votes in The Illinois State Senate, is not what he's making it out to be.
Once again, we understand your desire to shelter your husband's record from criticism, we thank you for your participation, and we hope you understand that running for the Presidency is serious business.
It's not personal.
I don't want the world too think the USA
as a dynasty of monarchs.  Hillary would be
seen more as a queen then a president.  People will be wondering who Bill Clinton will be banging next in the white house.  You know i don't think Bill and Hillary are racist though i think they are racial insensitive.
It first popped out from bill when he regarded the other contestants in the debate as boys..Ask any black man when a white man calls him a boy if he finds that offensive most would..Hillary made it seem that Martin Luther Kings movement was a small task compared to the large task of singing a document that made law.  I think its much harder to march and get spit on and beaten then to sign some document that made a law. Obama doesnt really wanna talk about race. He is of mixed races he could care less he trancends race this is what makes him a uniter he has a unique ability to compromise, organize , relate and find similar things we can agree on to get the peoples work done. I would say let Hillary get the vice president spot but there were quotes from her campaign team that barrack might get shot and knowing the Clinton's would do anything to get elected so i wouldn't put it past them and not even give her that..

I thik what we should be focusing on are the candidates records. Who is more experienced and ready to lead. Who will change course in Iraq deliver universal health care and deal with our economic problems? I believe that person is Hillary Clinton ready to lead from day one.
You go Michelle! I can see why they call her "The Closer." She sure did cut through the chase on this issue.
Clinton wants to replace the players Obama wants to end the game.
Obama lacks depth, nice guy, but ... There are real problems in this country, serious issues. Wake up everyone and listen to what he does not say.  I am not led that easily, isn't that how we got stuck with George W?  Here we go again...
MICHELLE OBAMA sounds like a first lady: "I'm like, 'Where have you been?', "I'm like 'Huh?' "I get confused when people are like”

“He looked at everything everybody else looked at, and he said this is going to cost us millions of dollars and thousands of lives," she said.”-  wow what an exact estimation of the cost of war!
Hi there from Switzerland. Politics or Politic, Clintons and Obamas are both democrats. Clinton has a lot to loose, Obama has the future.
No dirty tricks and words please. One will need the other against Republicans. Clinton has recently lost support of John Kerry because of their words and criticism. None of Obama and Clinton is perfect. They must RESPECT each other please and stop with lie. Jimm
I want to know how his past drug use is not relevant? How is his "Non votes" in the senate not stating the record. What is this guy supposed to get a pass because he is black? I don't get it... This holier than thou attempt by the Obamites to make any reference to his past or lack of experience is ridiculous! The guy hasn't even served enough time in the Senate.  He would have gotten more time for his cocaine use!
What's funny, which no one's talking about is, how Senator John Edwards is directly responding to Hilary's false accusations of Obama and accusing her of suggesting that Dr. King's work was in vain and was decided by a Washington politician, and yet the Clinton's camp is ignoring him and seems so focused on destroying Obama. Why don't they respond to Senator Edwards? Well, because he's not a threat to them now than Obama.., which supports the fact that they'll do anything to destroy anyone that threatens to challenge them and take the Democratic nomination from them.
The Obamas seem like very fine people, and nothing like the Clintons who we all know are not very scrupulous. I find the idea of having people like Barack and Michelle in the White House really exciting and the idea of going back to the days of the Clintons very depressing.
Obama wants to end the game?  Then why is he trumpeting the endorsements of those who have been mastering the game for years?  He can't say he's going to change Washington while he embraces John Kerry.  He can't have it all ways, all the time.  Let's not fool ourselves: anyone who gets to the point of being a serious contender for President of the United States didn't get there by being an "outsider".  And he's not going to be an "outsider" when he gets to the White House.  This really IS a fairy tale!
The Obama campaign is feeling the screws tighten down on his remarks and record. All the votes "present" in the Illinois Senate, where he hid instead of making a decision, waiting until Hillary said what she would do to halp alleviate the economic woes of ordinary Americans on housing, healthcare and unemployment, then rolling out a very similar plan three days later. Hmmm?
Michelle Obama needs to take some English courses, "like for verbal clarity". She sounds too much like like a "Valley Girl"
I imagine the Obama campaign is really pissed that Bill Clinton is a member of the African-american Hall of Fame and Barak and Michelle are not.
Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Can this whole election campaign, Democrat and Republican get any funnier?
If we spent as much time looking for that guy who alledgedly killed that woman Marine, he would be in jail by now.
I have to say that the Clintons are deeply disturbing (and deeply disturbed). Power and the lust for it does corrupt, and in the deepest and most inhuman way.
I think his wife rules the roost. Voting for president not first lady.
I just don't understand why Hillary doesn't reveal her record of experience.  Since when has been married to a rock star make you a lead singer?  Put up or shut up Hillary.  Bill can't always bail you out!  We need a person of character in the white house.  Hillary it is NOT
I am sitting here reading all of these comments and it's just amazing to hear all of the excuses and comments that everyone says from every side. I am republican and didn't see anything wrong with the comments made by the Clintons and I don't even like them...Obama is a well-spoken man and I'm sure a nice person but being sworn into office on the Koran was where the line stopped in my opinion. The very foundation this country is built on "Democracy" will be the very thing that destroys us all because there is too much Democracy in this country. Everybody has to tip toe around everyone else's feelings constantly...you have to like everyone or your racist...it's ridiculous...the bottom line is you can't make everyone like everyone black, white, purple, islamic, jewish...you name it! Everyone in this country is a minority except for the American Indians! Every person in this country comes from a different country and background so why does everything become a racist issue??? Here in America we have freedom of religion...that's great and all but there are certain basics our fore fathers set down and shouldn't be changed...And as far as the war goes...my children's father has fought in this war every step of the way...and I'm sick of hearing how the war was wrong...If any of these candidates now had been in office when it all started...they'd have all done the exact same thing...and as a matter of fact if the Clinton/Gore had taken heed of the warnings they were proven to have known about then 911 may have never even happened. Of course, they want to blame Bush Sr. yet everyone at that time wanted him to pull out so he did and what happened thousands of innocent people were slain because we didn't finish the job...now everyone wants to jump on a different bandwagon saying the war was wrong...Personally, none of them can make up their minds...they just change them to suit the moments...Hilary, Obama and every one of them...The fact is we have terrorism going on right now in our own country and we're all too busy fighting amongst each other to realize that it's right here under our noses....Think about that when voting...Sometimes wolves are in sheeps clothing...
When does being a nice guy mean that you can't be a thoughtful leader? There's more to Barack Obama than being a "nice" guy. It's just a lazy excuse to not vote for him because you are prejudice against his age, or maybe even worse, race. Read about him, he's got a website, it will list everything he wants to change. Sure, he's a Freshman senator, but he's done a lot for his state and he wants to do more. What's so wrong about that? Look, Hilary Clinton has a very conservative view on how to deal with Iraq. I disagree with her, I think we can't have real change with her. How can we, when we spend so much on this war?

What is his record of voting?  Obama has voted PRESENT more times that he has voted.  He has nothing but pretty words NO ACTION.
Having in the white house is giving to Bill another Monica again.Let's avoid that to happen to america.
What is going on...on this post?  Who in the hell left the gate open and let some of you out?
Obama was against the war in the beginning and he didn't get sworn in on a koran.
He funded the war in support of the troops.  The troops didn't put themselves there, so why not give them the tools to fight the republicans or wait Hillary's war?
Get the he$$ out of here with that crap.  Get educated on the issues.  The post is about Michelle, no one sticks to the topics on these things.
GOOD JOB MICHELLE!
Wow, i was like so impressed with Ms. Obama's rebuttal. That was like, you know, like the most inspiring speech ever! I like can't like wait for her to like be First Lady!
