Clinton honors MLK at labor event

Posted: Monday, January 14, 2008 3:55 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The fight for better working conditions for private security officers in New York is part and parcel of Martin Luther King's larger struggle for justice during the civil rights movement, Hillary Clinton told a mostly black audience at a labor event Monday.

"Every day you stand up and speak for justice, you are the living embodiment of Dr. King's legacy," Clinton said. "We need to be recommitted to Dr. King's dream. It was a dream that demanded action and he gave that action every day of his life."

Many in the audience cheered when Clinton took the podium, but several booed and some even left as she began speaking.

Clinton said the fight to provide a living wage and health care for security workers and better schools and job opportunities for minorities and women were all part of the same struggle, before going on to talk about the economic challenges many families face in America today and the importance of the labor movement. Her speech was sprinkled with references to the Bible, to King's dream and to his last speech to striking sanitation workers in Memphis in 1968.

"We are called upon today here in New York City to fulfill the unfinished dream and to live the legacy that we have inherited. Each of us, no matter who we are or where we started from is a beneficiary of Dr. King," she said.

"How many of us ever could have dreamed that we would see the day when a woman and an African American are running for the presidency of the United States of America?" she asked, to applause.

"Both Sen. Obama and I know that we are where we are today because of leaders like Dr. King, and generations of men and women like all of you, people who looked into the eyes of their children and saw the promise of a better future, who protested and picketed and faced dogs and tear gas and night sticks against their skulls. Some, like Dr. King, who even gave their lives. But they also voted and, they brought people to the polls and they held leaders accountable for delivering on the promise."

The comments came after several days during which the Clinton and Obama campaigns have been trading barbs over a statement the New York senator made last week that it took Pres. Lyndon Johnson to pass the civil rights legislation for which Martin Luther King, Jr. was fighting. Some interpreted the statement as diminishing the role of King in the civil rights movement, but Clinton has said that was not her intention.

The senator attended the event with local union, clergy, political and community leaders as part of a campaign to raise salaries and improve working conditions and access to health care for private security officers.

She's a HYPOCRITE! Just go away. We've had enough.
please hillary you are soo fake!!
Wow, after using MLK as a tool attempting to bait Mr. Obama into a divisive, distracting unscrupulous dialogue, that shows a lot of gall.
Pretty low
What have the clintons or any democrats done for blacks except talk. Half the grown men are in jail, and many of the young girls give birth before 16. Are a few foodstamps and housing in a project is all they won't.
The clinton's are interjecting race; using it like a surgeon would use a scaple. They have employed it in an array of settings, signaling certian classes to reinvergate the rebel yell. Mr. Clinton is saying no black male before a white woman. The coding calls for looking back and dusting off your hate. They know once open it cannot be closed. It is done as if they were atop stone mountain. They now need their loyalist in the black population to assist in carrying the torch of raceism. The using of uncle toms of high caliber solidifies the code and amplifies who side are you on.
GO HILLARY!  YOU HAVE ALL THE EXPERIENCE AND
INTELLIGENCE!  IF BUSH CAN DO IT YOU CERTAINLY
CAN!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe anybody would vote for someone like her. When need a real leader not someone who is going to divide us like she is doing to her own party.

Vote.
Vote smart.
Vote Obama!
I swear this woman is such a joke.  Put your foot in your mouth regarding a beloved African American, then exploit him for your own purposes.
wtf is hillary talking about ???so now she is praising a man whom she dissed a few days back,i am sure i dont think she is a racist but that was the stupid thing to say, what about women rights who gets the credit for that one ???? ha acordingly to hillary ways of thinking men should get credit for that one as much as it takes two to act on something/the other one being lbj acted because he was presured. ,that is why its called the civil rights movement stupid. mlk paid with his life how do the two get equal credit on this??? how many men do you see marching with women during those abortion rallies ?? same bs  from a politician who says anything to get elected.
Hmmm...she throws out MLK's name like she hasn't been using it as a weapon - like they are "old buddies".  Either play nice or play dirty - but pick one side or the other.  Don't play the race card and then blame it on the other candidate.

I really hope she keeps it up and shows America that she is in it to win it FOR HERSELF not the country - whatever the cost.  Shame on you Hillary - I am embarrassed for women everywhere.  You do NOT represent us, but instead represent only your own self-serving interests.  I want a woman in the White House, but you are not the right person for that honor.
South Carolina. Nevada, Michigan (although, they are not campaigning there) and the remaining states within the country. Don't fall for it...this is Hillary at her best...saying whatever she thinks people want to hear, rather than saying what the people needs to hear. In her speech last week she spoke of her true feelings about Dr. King, or was it LBJ? Oh, what the heck. It was only the Civil Rights Act.
Why is Obama now speaking with a southern drawl?  He is from Hawaii and Chicago and went to school at Harvard, but now he speaks with a soft, southern genteel accent?  What a phony!
I think the media and the Obama folks are working this for all it's worth and trying to hurt Clinton.
Hillary Clinton is so for the African American people.  She is for all races and sincerely wants to help people have better lives.  To paint the Clintons
any differently is totally dirty politics.  I think
Obama is not playing fair.  He has been using race.  I listened to his preaching on Sunday and learned nothing about what he can do for our country.  Yes,
we know what we need, but no, he has not told us what "he can do".   "How" is he demonstrating that he can unite the country?  I just don't know anything about him and the media isn't asking him
the tough guestions.  Voters, don't you want to know
about him, the man.  The media did the samething with
Bush, gave him a big pass, while helping bash Kerry.

We need the Democrats to go after Bush.  Clinton started running against Bush, and after being attacked by Obama and Edwards, she started to respond.  The media talks about her negatives...what are they?  What are Obama's negatives?  No one is asking the tough questions.  Personally, I think that Obama should come back and run in eight years.
We will need at least 16 years to repair the damage
done to our country by Bush.

South Carolina don't be hoodwinked, bambozzled, or run a muck of. Come together as you have came before.  Unlike Bill, Hillary has another agenda and once you turn your head you will be paying for it for sure because Hillary Clintons hand is going to go into your pocket soon as it's over.  Why haven't other Senators rushed to support Hillary as other Senators are out to support Sen Obama and Edwards?  Who knows best then the insiders.
Shame on you, MSNBC, and especially Chuck Todd!!!  How DARE you exclude a presidential candidate from a debate?!??  Let Kucinich debate.  Who do you think you are?  Stop playing kingmaker and limiting our choices.  Let us hear ALL of the candidates and decide for ourselves who we want to vote for.  There is only ONE poll that matters, and that’s the one where WE pull the lever.  Let Kucinich debate.

Shame on you!

Botox. Lots and lots of botox.
Can you have a statement from Canada? If so, please drop all the " Women voting for Hillary " and" African Americans voting for Obama " stuff and just vote for the person who is best suited to carry your nation into the next decade. As America goes, so does most of the world. You have a rare opportunity to lead into some very tough times, so vote to do so with thought.  Thank you.
As usual, people take what the Clintons say and blow it all out of proportion. I think it's just their way of masking their fear that the almighty, silver tongued Obama may not have as good a chance of winning this as they thought.

Go Hillary!!! You've got my vote over Obama anyday!!!!
If Obama doesn't win the nomination, I'm voting Republican. I will take my "fairy tale" and MLK-loving vote to the other side, even if that butthole Guiliani wins and I know I dislike that fool!
No. Sierra:  That is not what she said, it is your interpretation of what she said.  This is just another kind of swiftboating by Obama supporters and he could put a stop to it if he wanted to.
By the way, I am not a Hillary supporter or Obama for that matter.
