Romney talks economy to Detroit

Posted: Monday, January 14, 2008 9:33 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Erin McPike
DETROIT, Mich. -- At first glance, it looks like the small government-seeking Romney is backing away from pumping up the privacy of the private sector. In his remarks before the Detroit Economic Club this afternoon, Romney marched on with his laments about Washington -- specifically, how the federal government has failed to rescue from distress the automotive industry that drives Detroit.

“In face of all the existing burdens that weigh down the domestic automotive industry,” Romney reproved, “instead of throwing over a life preserver, Washington has dropped yet another anvil on Michigan with higher CAFÉ standards, and now it’s passively sitting back to see if car companies can swim.”

So Romney, who’s dueling in a new-versus-old, hope-versus-truth battle with McCain to win over the voters of Michigan, made his pitch here about why he’d be a better choice in Washington for the economically challenged state by offering a set of policy prescriptions he’d pursue as president.

The first? Yet another conglomeration of forces that will come together to try and fix the problem with Romney’s “can-do” leadership overseeing the partnership. He promised, “If I am your President, in my first 100 days, I will roll up my sleeves, and I will personally bring together industry, labor, Congressional and state leaders to develop a plan to rebuild America's automotive leadership.  It will be one that works for Michigan and that works for the American taxpayers.”

This is the same Romney who later griped about the size of the bureaucracy in the federal government and said, "There are currently 40 government workforce training programs spread out over the federal government.  Let's replace bureaucracy and bureaucrats with personal responsibility and individual ownership.” He did, however, propose to shift government workforce training programs into personal accounts “that can be managed by the workers themselves to gain education at community college or to pay for on the job training in real jobs.”

Other suggestions included beefing up funding for automotive research and development; providing tax credits and making permanent the research and development tax credit; and yanking from Washington the power to impose CAFÉ standards.

Romney got in a few good lines at certain points including this one when making his typical point that term is “global warming” not “America warming”: “Placing caps and taxes on the U.S. alone just drives manufacturers in China and India and does little more than make Washington politicians feel welcome at the embassy cocktail parties.” When getting further into burdens put on automotive companies, including legacy costs, health care costs and taxes, he got a healthy applause for this: “You take off those burdens, and let’s show them how fast a Mustang will actually go.”

And he invoked McCain’s name for proposing, with Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (I/D), a bill that he said “unilaterally imposes new high energy costs on U.S. manufacturers, with no safety valve.” He then dug up a few figures from the Energy Information Association that project the bill would “raise electric rates by as much as 25 percent and gasoline prices by 68 cents a gallon” and cost 300,000 jobs.

And although Romney has vowed to be the president that will slash spending, he volunteered the following: “I will make a five-fold increase -- from $4 billion dollars to $20 billion dollars – in our national investment in energy research, fuel technology, materials science, and automotive technology.” Of course, he didn’t offer any indication about how he would pay for the exponential bump.

He did take questions, which he hasn’t been doing much of lately. And although two of the questions were broad questions about the very topic he had just addressed and he referred the questioners to his remarks, he did get one about another topic dear to Michigan: the protection of the Great Lakes. Of course, with that, he explained that that was better left to the states.

Despite the policy-oriented nature of the address, Romney made certain to bookend it with personal appeals to the residents of his native state.

“I’ve got Michigan in my DNA, I’ve got it in my heart and I’ve got cars in my bloodstream,” he said at the beginning of his remarks before offering a few anecdotes about growing up in the state. That included “the biggest day in the year” for him, which was getting to go to the Detroit Auto Show with his father. “We were escorted from the hotel with a police escort motorcycles -- awfully cool -- even though we had to go in a rambler,” he said of the experience.

And he closed the speech by coming full circle with a preview of his visit later this afternoon to the well-timed auto show, where he will be accompanied by his eldest son, Tagg. “The next time I visit the Auto Show,” he said, “I look forward to doing so as your President.”

Romney is the man to talk economy... 2 MASTERS DEGREES FROM HARVARD!!!

All Huckabee has is that "theology" degree that he LIED ABOUT HAVING!

McCain has something... ILLICIT AFFAIRS with women outside his marriages.
While Romney is talking about turning Michigan's economy around - McCain is insisting that it can't happen!

McCain is a cranky old man that drops "F" bombs at will... (Again today)
MAJOR news in Senate races: A judge has ruled that the Mississippi Senate special election has to be held by March 19th. Link: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/01/breaking-mississippi-judge-rules-in.html
Romney is my choice...  I mean, whats the option?  JOHN MCCAIN???  He's just an old man who chases skirts and has a horrid temper!

Huckabee is nice enough - but not smart... he'd ruin the nation with his ignorance.
I caught most of the speech on C-span tonight.  I was very impressed and I'm glad a candidate is talking about SPECIFICS of how to fix problems.  My wife who doesn't follow politics as much as I do, was very impressed with Mitt's clarity.  We've been leaning toward Rudy, but, I'll have to think hard in the next couple of weeks before our primary here in FL.

Mitt definitely understands how to fix problems (especially economic ones) quickly and efficiently.

With Gen. Patreus having turned around Iraq, we need someone that gives power to the people as our founders wrote in "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".
Romney has won me over... I like his Business knowledge...

McCain's nasty and vindictive attitude is only going to get worse if he gets a little power!
MICHIGAN WILL BE THE TURNING POINT TO A GREAT PRESIDENT - MITT ROMNEY.

He may not be perfect, but he cares about the state and is smart enough to turn things around...

Unlike Huckabee and foul-mouth McCain
I agree... McCain's integrity takes a MAJOR hit when you consider how awful he's treated wife one, two and three...

He's as bad as Clinton when it comes to chasing skirts!
No one I've heard on the GOP side can compete with Romney's economic brilliance...

Michigan can and will bounce back - IF we elect leaders with vision like Romney - and not just BAD vision like McCain!
McCain's own personal life assures me that he must be intolerable to live with... Thus the numerous divorces...  And it would embarrassing for the nation to have a 75-year-old president with a 35-year-old wife (that he's probably CHEATING on!)

McCain is old and Huckabee is dumb...

Like it or not, Romney outweighs them both.
Yes, it's true, Huckabee is ignorant.

Personally I wouldn't trust him to change my tire let alone run the Free World.
yes mitt romney is intelligent and business savvy... but mccain being a skirt-chaser appeals to me to.

you go gurl!
If I have to watch Hucklebee at one more debate give that dumbass pious look into the camera before SNEAKING out of a tough question to launch another lame ass joke....
Michigan Catholics are smarter than Arkansas "Evangels" any day... Hucklbee's holier than thou act won't play up here!  Neither will McCain's negativism!  I'll take the Mormon that knows what he's doing ANY DAY!
How will Mitt increase energy research without raising taxes?? Easy, get rid of all the government jobs that are not needed and all the spending. He did it in Massachusetts, and it worked.
Why is this so difficult?

#1  Romney - 2 Masters Degrees in Economics from Harvard.  True conservative and responsible. History of positive changes.  Morally superior.

#2  Guiliani - Not as much smart as Romney, but a great leader.   Morals suspect.

#3  Thompson - Solid leader - won't give in to the Liberals.  True Conservative Morals suspect.

#4  McCain - War Veteran - Angry - too old - vile mouth (F bombs yesterday)  Morals of an alley-cat!
(Cheated on his various wives continously)

#6  Huckabee - Raised Taxes $500 million, allowed murders to go free, son tortures animals to death for "fun", weak on immigration, NOT VERY SMART.
It has now come out that George Romney never marched with Martin Luther King watch how his campaign manager flips and flops in this interview with Chris Matthews please watch this video.

Mitt Romney Flip Flopping again

A photograph of GOP presidential contender Mitt Romney at a 1994 Planned Parenthood fund-raiser has surfaced, once again raising questions about the former Bay State’s governor’s abortion flip-flopping.

The picture, a copy of which was obtained by the Herald, shows Romney and his wife Ann at a house party fund-raiser in Scituate with Nicki Nichols Gamble, who was the president of the Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts at the time. Romney has already downplayed ties to Planned Parenthood after revelations that Ann Romney donated $150 to the group.

Gamble said the pic was snapped at an event at GOP activist Eleanor Bleakie’s house and that she “clearly” remembered speaking with Romney at the event. At the time, Romney was running as a pro-choice Republican against U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.).

“My recollection is that we talked about his senate candidacy and the fact that he was supporting Roe v. Wade and a choice agenda at the time,” Gamble told the Herald. “It was a Planned Parenthood event. We were there to discuss our programs and our advocacy.”

The event was held the same day Ann Romney wrote a check to the pro-choice group. Romney has previously said he had “no recollection” of his wife writing the check to Planned Parenthood.

Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom called the flap “a dog bites man story.”

“Governor Romney used to have a different position on abortion,” Fehrnstrom said. “He is now firmly pro-life and has made it clear that as President he will advocate for a culture that welcomes life and protects the sanctity of life. This is the same path that Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush followed.”

Because of his abortion shift, Romney has been branded a flip-flopper by his GOP primary opponents, as well Democrats. Romney has stated he became pro-life in 2004 during the stem cell debate in Massachusetts.

Beyond attending the event, Romney filled out a 2002 questionnaire for the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund in which he said he supported Roe v. Wade, sex education in schools and increased access to emergency contraception.

“With Mitt Romney, this has been more than a flip-flop. This has been an extreme makeover,” said Planned Parenthood spokesman Angus McQuilken. “What voters need to know about Mitt Romney is this: where he stands on any issue is always a moving target.”

Mitt Romney Flip Flopping!
This guy will do anything for a vote....

Last week, Bay Windows, a Boston gay newspaper, reprinted excerpts from a letter Romney wrote to the Log Cabin Republicans in 1994, hoping to gain the group’s support in his campaign against the veteran Democratic lawmaker and Massachusetts institution.

“If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,” Romney wrote. “My opponent cannot do this. I can and will.”

Romney lost that race by a wide margin, but came closer to defeating Kennedy than had any previous challenger in recent memory. Romney’s support for the gay community did not end with his loss, however, as his political aspirations dictated otherwise. At the Boston Gay Pride Parade in 2002, when he ran for governor, he and his running mate Kerry Healey distributed pink fliers stating, “Mitt and Kerry wish you a great Pride weekend
Romney apparently is the last American who believes global warming is a hoax.
The pessimist says it can't get any worse, and the optimist says it can.
Why is Jim so impressed with masters from Harvard?  All you have to do to get in is have the right name.  After that, staying in is easy.  Remember Shrub?  I don't think the Harvard name is any reason to vote for any candidate after Shrubbie.
Jim, Peter, Bailey:

The job of President of the United States is not to be liked.  It's to make a difference first in the lives of American people and secondly to those in the rest of the world.  John McCain has a proven track record of being able to reach out to those with differing opinions and accomplish things.  He also stands behind his core values.  I have no idea what he's done in his personal life(or for that matter what Mitt Romney has done in his), but I'm quite sure that none of you have walked on water.  By the way, if you have...please let me know where you are because I'll follow you to the end of the Earth.
How many days has Erin McPike been out of college?  Can't MSNBC find anyone with some basic knowledge and experience to cover a presidential candidate?  I listened to Mr. Romney's speech to the Economic Club today.  He was informed, intelligent, specific, and passionate.  I guess he didn’t talk about the ‘fierce urgency of hope’; he didn’t play his bass guitar…McPike couldn’t connect…didn’t get it.  Romney talked intelligently about the auto industry and the economy.  McPike couldn’t keep up, fell asleep, then had to find a wrinkle for the story.  I don’t think it really worked though.  McPike making snide comments about Romney’s discussion of business and the economy is like McPike teaching Huckabee how to deliver a sermon.  Stick to something you know, if you know anything.

McPike:  “The first? YET ANOTHER conglomeration of forces that will come together to try and fix the problem with Romney’s “can-do” leadership overseeing the partnership."  Apparently McPike doesn't understand the significance of the statement given the fractured relationship and inability to communicate between auto industry leadership and Washington.  McPike, how do the words, “Yet another’, contribute to the story?

McPike: "and YANKING from Washington the power to impose CAFÉ standards."  HILLARIOUS!  Romney rightly made the case that Washington has strapped automakers with UNFUNDED CAFE standards.  Mr. Romney supports a partnership approach, where CAFE standards are accompanied by assistance...he understands that CAFE standards benefit ALL of America (and stated as much), and therefore should not be imposed at the cost and peril of automakers alone.  McPike is either a biased pretender, or a few bricks shy of a full load.

McPike:  "And although Romney has vowed to be the president that will slash spending, he volunteered the following: “I will make a five-fold increase -- from $4 billion dollars to $20 billion dollars – in our national investment in energy research, fuel technology, materials science, and automotive technology.” Of course, he didn’t offer any indication about how he would pay for the exponential bump."

HILLARIOUS!  What is with the “Of course” again?  And how can an adult make such a ridiculous statement?  Try to keep up McPike.  It’s possible to CUT overall spending, and still INCREASE spending for specific items.  I don’t expect you to understand how that’s possible right away…take your time…talk to your mom…it will come to you.  Of course it will.

McPike: "Of course, with that, he explained that that was better left to the states."  Of course!  Of course he did.  Of course.  Why of course.  A horse is a horse, of course.  HILLARIOUS!  McPike, try to keep up.  It’s actually not unusual for a Republican to advocate State's rights.  You see, we actually have State governments and a Federal government…never mind.  Google state sovereignty and try to brush up.

I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO FIND A VIDEO COPY OF MR. ROMNEY’S ADDRESS.  Mr. Romney was spot on.

It would be GREAT too if MSNBC would put credible adults on the trail.  I realize its tough to convince adults with families etc. to leave home and spend time on the trail, but COME ON…this is a PRESIDENTIAL contest!  It would be GREAT too if some of these would be 'journalists' would disclose their politics, rather than continue to PRETEND to be journalists.
Romeny Economy I love it when he says JOBS JOBS JOBS
he is so passionate abou America.
McCain is a Rambo,  I need a job not a war.

Bam and Hillarious on the Democratic side are becoming a joke.
Mitt has the right economic message.  Its time for Michigan to send him on the road to the White House, in a Detroit-made vehicle.
Romney Economy I love it when he says JOBS JOBS JOBS

McCain is War War War, I need a job not a war.

Bam Bam and Hillarious are non starters.

McCain wife is a foot taller the ODD COUPLE.

Bill Clinton lied to congress but he wouldn't lie to us.
BAILEY  HUCKABEE ONLY FINISHED COLLEGE IN 3 YEARS HOLDING DOWN 2 JOBS, WAS ELECTED GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR HAS THE LEAD IN DELEGATES, AND TIED NATIONALLY WITH NO MONEY, AND HE S NOT SMART?  WOW YOU MUST BE A GENIUS TO SAY THAT.
Romney has the will, the wisdom, the innovative spirit proven by his record in turning failing businesses into success. He sees the potential, and prods it into success with positive energy and deep, principled vision of how the situation can work out, hangs on until it does.  He turned the Winter Olympics, 2002 in SLC, Utah, which was sinking with infighting and accusations, into a glittering success and a great diplomatic coup for the world.
Does Anyone see through this guy? He told us Nothing about How he planned to pay for these pie-in-the-sky-promise-them-anything campaign promises. (While also claiming he will increase our military by 100,000--all while we are Trillions of dollars in debt to China, Saudi Arabia and Japan). I can't help but wonder how much Romney-off-shore money is invested in these nations' financial institutions.

HOW can America depend on a guy to bring us more jobs, while he makes his own millions TAKING our jobs with his Buy-Out Firm? While he is shutting down American companies, analysts who track Buy-Out Firms' compensation estimate Romney to exceed $500Million (NYTimes 03/11/07). Romney's 'Experience' is Forcing Thousands of Americans out of their jobs, and forcing Thousands more to take cuts in pay just to keep their jobs--forcing buy-outs--NOT Creating Jobs.

Romney's short "experience" AS A PUBLIC SERVANT caused 'his' state of Massachusetts to be the Only State, during Romney's 4 years, to post ZERO GAIN in EMPLOYED RESIDENTS! He brought MA in @ 3RD FROM THE BOTTOM in Creating New Jobs (MA would've been 2ND FROM BOTTOM but Katrina destroyed Louisiana--even Huckabee knew how to help create jobs for his state while he was governor of Arkansas). There were 222,000 MORE residents who moved OUT of MA, than moved into the fair state, under Romney's 'leader'-ship (Center For Market Studies, Northwestern University. Boston Globe, 07/29/07,).

Romney's choice for advisor is J.Cofer Black--who already failed our nation miserably while chosen by Tenet to take care of the Taliban/bin Laden, before/during/after 911. Black--who is already criticized for wanting to give too much power to 'private security firms.' Black--Vice Chairman, Blackwater/Chairman, The Black Group LLC. Romney also claimed he has chosen Hoekstra as advisor. Hoekstra--Intelligence Commitee while FBI and CIA were playing 'keep-away' with vital information before/during 911, costing thousands of lives. Hoekstra--who ordered the creation of a web site which gave instructions for anyone looking to create a nuclear bomb--it was taken down when NYTimes began asking questions.

I would sooner trust McCain or Huckabee, as "Commander in Chief"--to choose wise advisors to protect our nation, to protect our military--wise advisors to bring more jobs into our nation, instead of lining their own pockets shutting jobs down.

Yeah, I'd rather hear the truth, than hope alone. "Where's the BEEF?" Why aren't candidates and the media getting to the meat of this campaign?--talking the hard facts and giving us Solid PLANS that show us hope?
Funny, but in this article he says he's got "cars in his bloodstream" yet in abother article about his visit to the auto show he "hasn't kept track" of the import-cars that he may have owned "over the years".  He drives a Mustang now...What year? 64 1/2? Because a guy with "cars in his bloodstream" really ought to be able to remember at least a couple other cars that he's owned besides his current, politically correct Detroit-made ride. Not to mention that a guy with roughly $100 million dollars in the bank usually has more than one set of wheels in the garage.  It's no big deal to me what he drives, but it just seems like he's once again put on his chameleon suit, changing his image to suit the audience, as in this case, where the unemployed auto industry people do not want to vote for a guy that puts his chassis on Mercedes or BMW and leaves them out of work, sitting on theirs.
Uh, didn't romney make his millions doing exactly what the private equity firm is doing to chrysler right now? Get rid of those worthless union michigan voters and then tell them the sun will shine tomorrow?
Romney is my choice by far. He has real leadership qualities, and he has proven success as a businessman. McCain is an old man who is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. I have a lot of respect for the man, but I would never vote for him for president of America.
How anyone could take ANY republican seriously on the economy is beyond me.  Proof is in the pudding, folks.  Republicans believe in trickle down, which is one of the reasons Michigan and the rest of the country is where it is today.  Don't be fooled by pretty talk..  Talk is cheap.
While Romney panders and whines in concert with the U.S. auto industry, the Europeans and Japanese concentrate on building better, more fuel efficient cars instead of behemoths like the Hummer, massive pick-up trucks (recently rolled out by Ford), and ever larger SUV's.  VW's latest diesel powered Passat can go 850 miles on a tank of gas.  American manufactures (and Mitt Romney of late) want to shift the blame for poor sales and loss of jobs to increased Federal fuel standards rather than actually build really fuel efficent cars that aren't the size of houses.  Detroit is stuck  and until they realize that oil is not getting any cheaper and that dressing up pigs in fancy clothes won't sell in the volumes they need to survive, they will continue to lose market share.  Is it any wonder that the new owners of Chrysler named their company "Cerberus"? In Greek mythology it's the name of the three-headed dog guarding the entrance to Hades.
Graduating from Harvard with 2 masters degrees and a JD is no small task! He was at the TOP of all his classes.  He was not one of those who got through Harvard with a D, he is driven to work hard!

Romney is intelligent, no matter what you may think of him.
