Huck, the Constitution and 'God's standards'

Posted: Tuesday, January 15, 2008 11:19 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
WARREN, Mich. -- Huckabee's closing argument to voters here this evening featured a few new stories and two prolonged sections on illegal immigration and Christian values.

These two topics usually feature prominently in Huckabee's stump speech, but last night he got specific, promising to build a border fence within 18 months if elected and elaborating on his belief that the constitution needs to be amended.

"[Some of my opponents] do not want to change the Constitution, but I believe it's a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God, and that's what we need to do is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards," Huckabee said, referring to the need for a constitutional human life amendment and an amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Huckabee often refers to the need to amend the constitution on these grounds, but he has never so specifically called for the Constitution to be brought within "God's standards," which are themselves debated amongst religious scholars. As a closing statement he asked the room of nearly 500 supporters to "pray and then work hard, and in that order," to help him secure a victory in Tuesday's GOP primary.

Tomorrow Huckabee will visit two polling places in the morning before taking off for South Carolina where he will watch Michigan's returns come in.

This candidate just plain scares me. The last time I checked we are in 2008! Why should we care who loves who to marry? Why should we care who decides to treat their body the way they want? By God's standards? Seriously...he needs to just give those two arguments a REST! I am tired of hearing about that. What about our men and women being killed overseas? WAKE UP America! Do we really want this guy to be our next leader? I would hope we would want to elect a President that will represent us, and not divide us as this past administration has done all across the board from this land to the entire world.
True Republicans Barry Goldwater and Teddy Roosevelt warned us about injecting religion into American politics. After the decimation of our party by W and Lott and Delay and the rest of the Southern Republicans, if Huckabee is the nominee I fear they'll be no more GOP north of the Mason-Dixon. The last Republican in NY, please shut out the lights.
HUKSTER THE SHUKSTERS GOD WILL GET YOU.
So his position is:  (1) The Bible is "God's Law"; (2) the Bible can't change; (3) The Constitution must be consistent with the Bible; therefore, the Constitution must be changed.  Can someone explain how this is different from Islamic countries that follow Sharia law?  And does he want to adopt ALL of "God's law"?  How about the part that says, in essence, if a man rapes your virgin daughter, his punishment is that he must pay the father 50 silver coins, he must marry the girl, and he cannot ever divorce her? (Deuteronomy 22:28-29) How many people want that in the Constitution?
Huckabee, Huckabee
He's our man!
Taking us back
In a Flintstones Van.
All of this potitical hot air.  Perhaps all of this was best in summary on a bumper sticker I saw on a car when Ann Richards was running for reelection as Texas govenor here in Texas some years ago.  The bumper sticker was to the point.  Do we really need a govenor in Texas!?

In that same thought patten.  Do we really need a president in the United States?  Personally all of those running for the president's office regardless of party don't thrill me at all.

Huck is better than all of the lot now "running" but that doesn't comfort me a lot either.  Just as long as we don't get Hillary.  One Clinton the first time was more than enough and Hillary only wants to make sure that she is "appointed for life!"  Her agenda sounds like the dictators from some South American country to me for her to get "elected".  So much for your rights and well being if she gets in!  You can kiss your life goodbye!

What ever happened to being an independent like I am proud to say I am? No heck with political party.  All of them are not trustworthy!

Sign me a disgusted and fed up fiscally responsible former retired US Army officer who thinks it is sad that not one is a leader in this stirred up mess.  There are no clear leaders in all of this.  Like trying to see in a glass container that has all of the mud and dirt stirred up.

Proudly served as a Lt. Col for 30 years both active and reserve time from 1969-1991 included having the first Clinton call my unit to active duty and sent to Bosnia!  Thanks a lot Bill Clinton for trying to kill me off again! I'll make sure that everone knows that Hillary is just more of the the same lies, threats and empty promises that any Clinton in politics is an assurance of more of the same!

Lt. Col. J. C. King
"... specifically called for the Constitution to be brought within "God's standards,"

Does this scare anyone else, or is it just me?

If the bedrock of the separation of church and state means nothing to this man, what does?

Fortunately I think he just signed his death warrant with mainstream America, which - contrary to some opinion - is STILL the majority.
Change the Constitution to be brought within religious standards?!

This makes his beliefs on evolution seem tame!
Nowhere in the Constitution will you find Separation of Church and State.

David, Virginia (Sent Tuesday, January 15, 2008 11:56 AM)

"But no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
United States Constitution, Article VI:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"
United States Constitution, Amendment I

"Change the constitution so that it's in God's standards"?  Not only is Mr. Huckabee in favor of altering the constitution on religious grounds, but he seems to think that only he can pass the religious test necessary to become this nation's Chief Executive.  With the help of HIS God, of course.

I used to think this guy was just a buffoon - National Prohibition on Tobacco, etc. Then I read about his animal-torturing kid and daddy's attempt to cover up the crime.  So I thought he was just another corrupt politician.  Now I read this and I'm conviced he's truly a dangerous being - a demagogue in the worst sense of the word.

Screeeeeech.  I used to like Huckabee.

I prefer McCain now.
While I feel nauseated by all of the establishment darlings, Mike Huckabee really gets my skin crawling. His advocation of a Constitutional amendments to prohibit abortion and gay marriage is vexing in the extreme.

Ron Paul, folks, we need Ron Paul.
It is about values.  The writers of the constitution would turn in their grave if they knew america is in the shape it is.  It is a total shame that you have to spell out what really is a marriage these days.  America is a total mess and totally lacks values in these times. Sadly most of these posters get their dresses blown up when someone takes a stand about american values.  Wake up america!!!
Someone saw the Huck at a local SC hardware store.  He says the Huck was loading up on wood, hammers, nails and body bags. The Huck said he wants capital punishment done in the biblical fashion, on a cross with nails in hands and feet.  He also said the Huck would not change the constitution just leave it up to the states.  He will push for this in his State and others. It could be a campaign smear by Romney but no one knows. I am a practicing media operative so I insert full disclosure here.
From the 1796 Treaty of Tripoli, passed unanimously by the US Senate, signed by John Adams:

Article 11: "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion..."

Everyone has a reason for what they want to do.  Amend the constitution, give an executive order, propose legislation, etc.  At least, Huckabee is up front about his foundational reasons for what he wants to do.  Why do the other candidates want to act?
Constitutional amendments along these two lines have been discussed and promoted for years by conservatives. There's nothing new here under the sun.

Our country has degraded morally till it's to the point of destruction and all these posters can do is rant and rave: "We want MORE sin and destruction! Leave us to wallow in it, please!"

There is no separation of church and state and there have been other Constitutional amendments in the past to improve the document without all this hysteria. Grow up, people.
Governor Huckabee has it exactly right.  Notice that he is specifically talking about only two issues:  protection of innocent human life and marriage between one man and one woman.  These are bedrock issues of civil society. Our crazy anything-goes "morality" has brought nothing but trouble and heartbreak -- the unavoidable consequence of violating God's laws. We need to get back to the place of His blessing.  Constitutional amendments for life and marriage would help.
The US constitution has been amended many times. The only amendment Gov. Huckabee was referring to was one to protect the sanctity of life. Besides, if I remember correctly one of the rights endowed by the constitution is the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is no secret that Mike Huckabee is strongly pro-life.
As a Christian, it seems to me that Huckabee is appealing to the brainless of Evangelicals, or is running for President of the Evangelical nation. There are some very smart Evangelicals that see right through this.

One preacher discussed how it is religions job to take care of the poor and destitute, and he found it offensive that Huckabee thinks it should be government's job. He also pointed out how disappointing it is for Huckabee's pardons/commutations are evidence of his religion getting in the way of his governing. It is Christian to forgive the sinner...but he thought he was God and let murderers go because he thought they found Jesus. His record is very questionable with ethics violations, raising taxes (he calls the hope) big time, over 1300 commutations/pardons, and poor on illegal immigration (although he did read an article on National Review and it's now called his plan). But he also yields his religion as a weapon in claiming that any candidate who questions his record..is somehow attacking him. It's shrewd..borderline smart..but he really gives Evangelicals a bad name (cue the Bon Jovi). And I know not all Evangelicals are lemmings...but if you look at who really votes for him...it's obvious.
Huckabee’s Liabilities

Politico.com and others have reported that Mike Huckabee has had 14 ethics complaints filed against him, yielding 5 admonitions and $1,000 in fines from the Arkansas Ethics Commission. Instead of cooperating with the Arkansas Ethics Commission, Huckabee twice filed lawsuits to shut it down.

On a number of occasions, Huckabee failed to report cash payments he made to himself. For example, according to The Associated Press, Huckabee received, but failed to report, “$43,150 from his 1994 lieutenant governor's campaign for use of his personal airplane, $14,000 Janet Huckabee received from his 1992 U.S. Senate campaign, and $23,500 from a tax-exempt organization he incorporated with others in 1994, but whose funding source isn't known…”

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Huckabee “depleted the governor's office emergency fund in the final weeks of his administration in part to pay for the destruction of computer hard drives in his office.”

According to a recent article in National Review,  Huckabee had a penchant for accepting gifts while serving in public office. “A $200 stadium blanket, $250 in dental care, a $600 chainsaw, and a $3,700 pair of cowboy boots were among 300 gratuities Huckabee accepted totaling $130,000. Like the Clintons loading their moving van with White House antiques, Huckabee tried to claim for himself some $70,000 in furniture donated to the governor’s mansion.”

Federal Level:

2006: Supported President Bush's immigration plan and claimed that opposition to Bush's proposal was driven by "racism or nativism" and that it wasn't amnesty.

Wrote in his 2007 book that implementing strict enforcement of immigration laws "would be sheer folly" and that it made sense to give "those here illegally a process through which they pay a reasonable fine in admission of their guilt for the past infraction of violating our border laws and agree to adhere to a pathway toward legal status and citizenship."

Huckabee has released a 9-point immigration plan as a cornerstone of his 2008 presidential campaign. It is disingenuous at best, deceitful at worst. His plan repeal the current law of multi-year baring of illegals to re-enter the U.S. for illegals who register during a 120-day period with Homeland Security and temporarily exit the country (for only a few days, at most). It is also highly likely that many would not even leave the country but would be allowed to go to their nearest consulate on American soil for paperwork.
They would face no penalty if they apply to immigrate back to U.S. (they'd be back in within just days). He would not utilize the current processing and vetting of immigrant applications (too slow for him and their illegal employers) but would set up special processing for these ‘special case formerly illegal’ immigrants. He also would reward these lawbreakers (and their law-breaking employers) by legalizing the former illegal and then returning them quickly which would allow the aliens to keep the very jobs they broke into the country and took. The employer of the illegal alien would be without his worker for only a few days at most and upon their return would have the extra bonus of a newly minted legal employee. This whole process is known as Huckabee’s “touchback” provision, though Huckabee dodges the question if asked directly, which almost no one in the media has done.

Huckabee has the backing of the CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) which is a globalist, open borders, international world government organization headquarted in New York. The CFR's increased focus on Huckabee began with a speech on foreign policy posted September 28 on the Council on Foreign Relations website. The Sept. 28 speech, delivered at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., focused entirely on foreign policy, portraying Huckabee as a supporter of Bush administration policy in Iraq and for the golbalist agenda. Curiously, the sudden rise in Huckabee’s surge in the polls coincided with the CFR’s backing.

Huckabee has told the Christian Broadcasting Network he had a theology degree, he told voters in Iowa he had a theology degree, he repeated the claim in November’s  CNN YouTube debate ... but, his campaign now says, it was not true.

In Arkansas:

As Governor, Huckabee fought for in-state tuition and taxpayer funded scholarships for illegal immigrants. He championed an effort in Arkansas to give in-state tuition at state colleges and taxpayer-funded scholarships to illegal immigrants, similar to the DREAM Act proposal at the federal level.

During the 2001 regular session of the Arkansas Legislature, Mike Huckabee supported giving driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Huckabee's spokesman during the entire process was Robert Trevino, Arkansas liason to the Department of Human Services. At the same time that he held this state position, Trevino was also the director of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). This group is a large, well funded advocacy group, of which part of their platform is advocacy for illegal aliens and reduced immigration enforcement and border controls. They explicitly campaign for amnesty and oppose any efforts of immigration control in order to maximize Latino voting power. In June 2005, Huckabee was the keynote speaker at the national LULAC convention in Little Rock and in his speech advocated for open borders and amnesty. He also called immigration enforcement efforts within the U.S. as “un-Christian, un-American, irresponsible and anti-life.”

He opposed legislation to require proof of citizenship in order to obtain public benefits and to vote. When Republican state senators in Arkansas proposed legislation modeled after Arizona's Proposition 200 [to require proof of citizenship for voting and public benefits], "Huckabee described it as 'inflammatory ... race-baiting ... demagoguery.' He said the bill, which seeks to forbid public assistance and voting rights to illegal immigrants, 'inflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there's a real problem. But there's not.'"

Huckabee opposed a raid on illegal immigrants in an Arkansas poultry plant even though calls to his office were "about 1,000 to one" against his stance.

Helped lead the effort to open a Mexican Consulate in Little Rock to issue Matricula Consular cards to Mexicans living in the U.S. (including those in the U.S. illegally). Many banks, including some in Arkansas, accept the card as a valid form of identification.

In order to draw a Mexican Consulate to Little Rock, Huckabee huddled with some of the state's most prominent and politically powerful businesses to draw illegal immigrants to Arkansas to provide employers (mainly agricultural, meat processing and packing plants and Wal-Mart) with a large force of cheap foreign labor. Huckabee even went so far as to travel to Mexico in October 2003 to cement relationships with Vicente Fox, then Mexico’s president, to establish the Mexico – Little Rock connection. Additionally disturbing is that Huckabee enticed Mexico to Arkansas with a practically free use of office space (actually a paltry $1 per year lease) as their consulate was being built. Huckabee facilitated a consortium of Arkansas corporations pledge to fund the building costs of the consulate AND to financially support Mexico’s presence there during the first three years.
"Huckabee's real goal was to create the Mexican consulate as a magnet to bring illegal alien workers into the state," McCutchen said, "to benefit companies like Tyson Foods, Wal-Mart, OK Foods, Simmons Foods, George’s Farms, Inc. and a host of smaller operations who wanted to employ the illegals for their cheap labor."

For 10 years, as governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee supported amnesty and taxpayer-financed welfare and health care for illegal aliens and increased taxes numerous times. Now, after sniffing the political winds, he poses as tough on illegal aliens and a tax-whacker. It is not that uncommon for candidates to state things that are politically expedient to get elected, then revert back to their DNA exhibited from their past records after reaching office. Huckabee’s past record is one of coddling illegal aliens, hiking taxes, shady ethics and liberal use of his power of pardon that enabled some rapists and murder’s to ply their trade once again after hitting the streets.
To deny illegal aliens tax-paid welfare and health care, plus low in state college tuition rates, would not be “Christian,” Huckabee said many times.

“As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee aggressively pushed for the early release of a convicted rapist despite being warned by numerous women that the convict had sexually assaulted them or their family members, and would likely strike again. The convict went on to rape and murder at least one other woman.
Confidential Arkansas state government records, including letters from these women, obtained by the Huffington Post and revealed publicly for the first time, directly contradict the version of events now being put forward by Huckabee.”

During his time as Arkansas governor, a net increase of taxes to the tune of $505 million dollars was leveled on the citizens of Arkansas.

"[Huckabee] hiked state spending 65.3%, from 1996 to 2004. He supported five tax increases. During his tenure, the number of state employees increased over 20% and Arkansas' general obligation debt rose by almost $1 billion.”

The Arkansas Journal blog has uncovered a video showing Huckabee begging the state legislature to raise taxes. He says: “Some have suggested [increasing the tax on tobacco at the retail level]. If that ends up being your preference, I will accept that. Others have suggested a surcharge on the income tax; that’s acceptable; I’m fine with that. “Others have suggested, perhaps, a sales tax; that’s fine. Yet others have suggested a hybrid that will collect some monies from any one or a combination of these various ideas, and if that’s the plan that the House and Senate agree upon, then you will have nothing but my profound thanks.”
Everyone has faith in something.  We all, through life, develop basic beliefs that govern what we do, say, and stand for.  It is very important that you research what all the candidates foundational beliefs are, as each and every one of them will indeed govern by them.  Read about their history, those they strongly respect and why.  There are plenty of belief systems represented that are much more frightening than that of believing in a loving God.
I finally heard the entire context of Mike Huckabee's speech about changing the Constitution. The media took snippets of it and therefore, took it out of context. Huckabee was not referring to the gay marriage issue, rather, he was referring to an amendment to protect the right to life of the unborn and the disabled. His beliefs stem from his core convictions which are biblically based. I've heard Huckabee say every life has intrinsic value regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, social class, etc.. I know this is a difficult subject to grasp if you are anti-war, however, Huckabee does not want those without a voice (unborn & disabled particularly) to have their life unvoluntarily taken from them. Our soldiers fight in Iraqi because they voluntarily want to, no one has forced their lives from them. Most American soldiers today are answering a noble and high calling to defend this Nation from our enemies. With the right to life, there is a distinction between a voiceless unborn child and a volunteer soldier.
Oh please, will you people grow up.  This is a classic political grandstand.  You need 75% of the states to change the constitution and the stupid bill doesn't stand a chance in Congress to begin with.

For conservatives, this is a symbolic issue about reversing the trend in our culture toward the destruction of the traditional family unit.  I don't see anything controversial in that.
The only question that needs to be answered is are there virsions of truth?
Hmmmmm.... the true colors surface. Instead of abiding by the wisdom of the Constitution Mr. Huckabee now wants to change it to suit his particluar views.

What's next..... a religious Test to qualify for a job?
Franklin-  no, most of these posters SUPPORT AMERICAN values.  What we don't support is Huckabee attempting to force his PERSONAL interpretation of his religious values on us.  AMERICAN values include freedom- of religion, speech, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Socially conservative values are against abortion and gay marriage.  Lots of people support those things who do not practice the same religion as Huckabee.

He is over the top and scary.  He would destroy what this country stands for.  Please, ANYONE but him.
The so called Values voters nonsense is a distraction from the real issues that face and threaten this nation...
Although I agree that marriage between a man and a woman should be protected, a presidential candidate should be able to outline a better argument for implementing such a rule.  Basing national policies upon the scriptures is not wise.  I prefer Mitt Romney's argument--that marriage should be protected out of fairness to the unborn, i.e., every child has the right to a loving mother and father.  I'm sure Mitt shares the same bible-based reverence for marriage, but he understands that this country is made up of millions of people from different faiths, and policies should not rest solely upon an appeal to the Bible.

I do not doubt Huckabee's sincerity, but I do not think that he understands the role of religion vis-a-vis government.
I caught this speech on MSNBC and my first reaction was, "What did he say ?!?!?!"

I can only assume Gov. Huckabee's handlers fouled up.  They should have saved the fire and brimstone speech for South Carolina, not Michigan.
So his position is:  (1) The Bible is "God's Law"; (2) the Bible can't change; (3) The Constitution must be consistent with the Bible; therefore, the Constitution must be changed.  Can someone explain how this is different from Islamic countries that follow Sharia law?

Richard, Portland OR (Sent Tuesday, January 15, 2008 1:25 PM)

Rich, I've been warning y'all on this post that Huck is a Christian Reconstructionist. That movement wants to impose strict biblical law on all of us just like muslims do with Sharia law.  Scary that he's a serious presidential candidate.
America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.
Alexis de Tocqueville

Our forefathers who were deeply religious men, statemen, warriors, and family men crafted the Constitution to protect all citizens (religious or not religious).  But, they also knew that our government would not survive if the moral foundations of our society were eroded (example Ancient Rome's slow death).  The Constituion was crafted to protect life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  Protecting the ancient, historical, tradition of marriage and the weakest, most innocent, and most dependent members of our society - the unborn children is what will help keep this nation of ours a "good" and "great".
"it's a lot easier to change the constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God"

You lazy, Huck?

Everytime I start thinking something nice about this flat-earther, I read something like this.

Huckabee (and the rest of you holy-than-thou hypocrites): you're not going to shove your God down my throat any more than the "Islamofascists" that you all copy so closely.
Okay, people, take a step back and listen.  Most people in America seem to favor the idea of marriage between one woman and one man.  Christians, Muslims, and Jewish faiths all indicate that marriage is between a man and woman.  A person can do in their own life what they want to...they have been doing it for years.  But to claim that someone is a religious nut just because they want to have that institution established as one woman/one man is just seeing one side.  I do not want to have to explain to my young children that two men or two women are married.  I am not raising my children like that and to say that gay people can marry is putting that kind of stamp of approval on it.  Again, they can do want they want in their own lives because it is their lives (which Hucakbee has also stated, for the record), but marriage should be established for one man/one woman.
Besides, if I remember correctly one of the rights endowed by the constitution is the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is no secret that Mike Huckabee is strongly pro-life.

Jo Tiner, Lake Kiowa, TX (Sent Tuesday, January 15, 2008 2:25 PM)

-------------
No, Jo, that stuff would be found in the Dec. of Ind.   The provision in the Constitution you might be alluding to is in the 5th and 14th Amendments, which, prohibit the Congress and the States from passing any law that deprives a person of life, liberty or property without due process.  Thus, gov't does, in fact, have the power to deprive you of your life if you are provided with due process of law.  Therefore, the Constitution is not so pro-life as you think it is.  Now, if you want to harp on the pursuit of happiness thing, then why would you support a ban on gay marriage?  If you do, then you are depriving millions of gay americans who want to marry their entitlement to the pursuit of their happiness through marriage with each other?  See how hypocritical and illogigal any argument against gay marriage is when you look at it?
Modern day marriage is a 100% product of civil law.  Marriage in biblical times up to about the early 1800s was not a function of the gov't. Gov't started getting into the civil aspect of marriage when it became obvious it was wrong to treat a wife as her husband's property, to deny wives any ownership rights in their husband's property, and out of necessity to ensure that the husband provided for the financial support of his wife...and of course, to provide a mechanism for divorce.  Thus, it is this new civil nature of marriage that gays want to enjoy, we dont' want the religious aspect of it...we want the civil rights attendant to marriage.  And if you have a problem with that, too bad.  This is America, and while majority rules, democracry also means protecting the minority from the tyranny of the majority...
As a very non-religious person (former Catholic), I'm not at all bothered by any of this. All he's saying is that it's more appropriate to amend the Constitution than to amend what is accepted as moral and right. Perhaps he could have framed it in a bit less religious language, but if it fit the audience, so be it.

He's not advocating infusing Christianity into any part of American life. Nor is he looking to have tent revivals and snake handling on the White House lawn. Abortion's a moral issue, not a religious one. He just happened to be conveying his stance to those who are more receptive to a Christian-oriented explanation.

Let's all try to tone down the secular rhetoric and overly dramatic reactions.
Just a reminders for those Huckabee bashers: why does the new President of US have to be sworn in with his hand on the Bible? (Not Kuran or any other book?) Why does the new President of US have to swear: so help me, God! Which God do you think he's swearing before? The constitution of US is obviously founded based on the Bible, so is the law of England, I believe. You're living in a Christian country, wake up! If you want to live in a Muslim or Buddist country, just go somewhere and establish one. If you live in US, learn the history, and respect Christiananity! Don't try to hijack this country and make it into a chaos like those other countries you wouldn't even want to live in yourself.
AS, Georgia (Sent Tuesday, January 15, 2008 3:20 PM)--
Marriage (Holy Matrimony) is outside the jurisdiction of the Constitution. Particularly if you attempt to use religious grounds to amend the constitution. Civil unions are under the jurisdiction of the state. States Rights.
If you don't like living in a secular nation that protects everyones right to believe as they wish and insist on cramming your beliefs down others throats then secede from the union with other like minded people form your own Theocracy. Check with Iran, they have been doing it for years. They may have some pointers for you. The United States of the One True Living God has quite a ring to it.
Good luck on that.
Ah but Pat from Huntington, NY, an unborn baby IS a human life. Ever see a sonogram? Ever been pregnant and felt your baby move inside you? In just four weeks a fetus has a heart, fingers, toes, etc. and is already distinctly human looking. So the Constitution protects unborns; it's the unConstitutional Roe v. Wade (1973) that does not.

Also, never forget there are quite a few homeschoolers and pro-gun groups in Michigan and these folks will vote in the majority for Mike Huckabee, no matter how often MSNBC takes Mike's words out of context.

Jesus said "The earth shall pass away but my words shall never pass away." This is what Mr. Huckabee was referring to when he said it's easier to change the US Constitution, man made laws, than it is to change Jesus, the Son of God's, immutable words and godly laws set down for all eternity in his Scriptures. They are "written in heaven" forevermore ... long after you and I are food for worms.
Just a reminders for those Huckabee bashers: why does the new President of US have to be sworn in with his hand on the Bible? (Not Kuran or any other book?) Why does the new President of US have to swear: so help me, God! Which God do you think he's swearing before? The short answer to your post is that the President is NOT required to take the oath of office on any religious book.  All of them have chosen to do so.  They can always opt to "AFFIRM" as opposed to "SWEARING" in their oath of office.  If you affirm, you don't need a bible, and the oath has the same full force and effect as though you swore on the bible.  This is true when someone takes the stand in a courtroom - they are asked to either swear or affirm what they are going to state is true.
Sally (Sent Tuesday, January 15, 2008 3:46 PM)

So I guess you are all ready to adopt all those thousands of unwanted babies after abortion is outlawed?  Or ready to donate millions of dollars to care for them?  Yeah, didn't think so.  You and your tribe of right to haters, are hypocrits.
Oops, guess they didn't pray hard enough...
Huckabee has no business running as a candidate, and especially as a republican. We, as republicans, should be AGAINST federal control of abortion, marriage, and most anything other than national defense.

Unfortunately all of the front runner republicans want to force their social worldview on the entire country through the federal government, save Ron Paul, of course.

The republican party is shrinking. It has been taken over by religious zealots and warfare statists, and if republicans don't wake up, we'll put another Clinton in office and continue this pointless war until at least 2013.
Considering that 90% of Americans are christians,
and we live in a democray... most americans want to live under the law of God.  Why are we always listening to the other 10%.  I am sick of the liberal media attacking christians which represent the majority of America.
Quit smearing the Huckster.  Thus far, he appears to be the candidate with the most integrity.
Go Huck!
Historically and legally "marriage" is a Contract, thats why its called the "marriage contract", to deny the right to contract to certain persons would violate other parts of the Constitution,
Of course Mike Huckabee is taken out of context once again. If one looks at what he stated,he is not trying to push his Christian beliefs on anyone. Yes, he is putting God first as his standard in what he values (which people who are not Christian value)  pro-life instead of murder and traditional marriage which is defined as between 1 man and 1 woman. Yet, these are not just a Christian viewpoint, but it's also a conservative viewpoint as well. I admire that he stands up for what he believes in! He's got my vote. Go Huck!
What is most horrifying is that after making this speech, this unstable Christofascist still came in third place in Michigan.

The GOP has for years been encouraging and rewarding voting by people who would make the U.S. a theocracy. With any luck, a Bloomberg run will render the GOP rightfully irrelevant.
So does he refer to menstruating women not being allowed in public because they are "unclean," or anyone working on the Sabbath should be stoned, or we as "God's people" should slaughter those of other nations and take their land, or take slaves? All of these are "laws of God" from the "Old Testament." There are fundamentalist groups which want these Levitical laws put into the constitution.

I'm sure Huckabee hasn't considered those, or the fact that men in biblical times could have as many wives as they wanted, produce a male through a slave girl if their wife wasn't doing the job, and other things.
If huckabee wins, Canada is going to have one heck of an immigration problem.
