Romney's spat with AP reporter

Posted: Thursday, January 17, 2008 3:45 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
COLUMBIA, SC -- Romney had to cancel two events in South Carolina due to weather, but he switched it up with a press conference in the Staples here that ended in a tiff with a reporter from the AP.

After Romney said in answer to another reporter's question, "I don’t have lobbyists running my campaign. I don’t have lobbyists that are tied to my..." he was cut off by AP reporter Glen Johnson, who challenged him with: “That’s not true, governor. That is not true. Ron Kaufman is a lobbyist.”

Kaufman is a senior strategist with the campaign who often travels with the governor and provides counsel before debates and other major events; in fact, Kaufman traveled with the motorcade in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses and was also in Michigan for the primary. He has been involved in Republican politics for decades and is now a lobbyist with the firm, Dutko Worldwide.

Romney went on, “Did you hear what I said? Did you hear what I said, Glen? I said I don’t have lobbyists running my campaign, and he’s not running my campaign.” Johnson then shot back, “He’s a senior adviser.”

Romney charged on with: “He’s an adviser. And the person who runs my campaign is Beth Myers, and I have a whole staff of deputy campaign managers," prompting Johnson to ask if Myers traveled on the plane with him, and he said she had.

It's also worth noting that Barbara Comstock, another senior adviser, is a Washington lobbyist.

The back-and-forth continued, causing spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom to end the avail after about 14 minutes. Although that is slightly longer than the campaign generally gives, they had scheduled 30 minutes for the session after canceling two events in the state due to severe weather before departing for Nevada. And after setting low expectations for how he will finish in the Palmetto State in the next day or two, reporters wanted to ask Romney about his effort here. When Fehrnstrom abruptly ended the press availability in the midst of the tiff with Johnson, several reporters piped up with lines like, "We've got to talk about South Carolina."

Romney had begun by announcing that he will unveil his short-term economic stimulus package in the next day or two, prompting several early questions about the economy. And when Fehrnstrom started guiding Romney away from the mic, the candidate approached Johnson to discuss the lobbyist matter further. Johnson challenged him on it more, and Romney, who was visibly irritated by the event, said: "Let's you and I talk." Fehrnstrom pulled Romney away from the discussion and essentially urged Johnson  to knock it off as Romney started taking pictures with a few of the supporters gathered there, who applauded for Romney as the scramble ended.

About an hour later after boarding the plane for Nevada, Romney walked into the press section, approached Johnson smiling and said, "A little later, come on up."

Romney...the total flip flopper who always wants it both ways.  A campaign senior advisor does not run your campaign?  Are you kidding me?
Splitting hairs, huh, Romney?
They should challenge Obama on the lobbyist that infest his campaign too, as he rails against lobbyist in his stump speeches.
Okay, What is it with reporters? Anyway something I would like to point out about the religion thing.  Huckabee goes into a Evangelical church and he and the pastor tell the people inside the church who to vote for.  In the LDS (Mormon) church it is not EVEN brought up.  Why?  Because it's agaist the LAW.  A church is supposed to loose it's tax free status if that happens.  I wonder why nothing is said?  Anyway Go Mitt, I saw first hand how he turned the Olympics from a disaster into a great show that even turned a profit!
Careful there MItt. Only the Clintons can get away with parsing words like that. Do take better care next time in your explanations.
That's what is wrong with the media today.  They want to be part of the story rather than report.  Sounds like another good pick for Chris Matthew's gang of newsmakers.
'Ol Mitt blew a gascet when faced with the truth. Let the Republicans crash and burn
He blow him in the upper office.
WOULD JESUS HAVE THROWN OUT MORMON MONEY CHANGERS MIT???

"NOT ACCORDING TO BOOK OF MORMON".
TURNS OUT OBAMA ancestors sold slaves to OWN FAMILY.
As someone who has endured a Romney governorship, I must say the man scares me. He claimed not long ago on national television to not get angry except when he 'kicked a door' recently. He feels like a time bomb to me. Not to mention his cold lack of compassion. Have we forgotten the true story (as told to the Boston Globe) in which he tied a dog crate to the roof of his car, put the family dog in, barreled down the highway until the dog got violently ill?
I'd love to see a video of this
Finally, a real journalist.  Bless you Mr. Johnson it is about time someone confronted this phony named Romney!
Wow, a reporter who is useful, that's interesting. Now maybe if ALL reporters could call out lies rather than propogate them American politics could get some momentum. Slick, Mitt, but not slick enough. By the way, it's not that I don't support Mitt Romney, I just favor someone else ... See how that doesn't work, Mitt?
What's next Mitt?  You going to tell us how you lived in Indonesia as a child.  Somebody get this guy an "Obama '08" button, from what we've seen lately... I'm sure he would wear it with pride.
look for mr. johnson to be removed from mr. romney's press corps.
Hey, what's new? They've all got them, including Hillary.  Same ol same ol!
Why question Romney like this and not Obama?  He is running a more aggressive attak on lobbyists yet his state co-chairs in New Hampshire and South Carolina are lobbyists and he has taken state lobbyists monies for this campaign.  If we are going to question on or some candidates about lobbyists in their camps then all candidates should be asked.
When did journalism turn into arguing and harassment?
Other than abortion what can you point to that he has flip flopped on?  Stop believing the sound bites you hear on the MSM stations and do some research.
since when is lobbyist akin to terrorist?

if lobbyists are sooooo baaaad then let's please ban/arrest/deport/or decapitate them...otherwise this is   a liberal activist reporter going after a republican
“Did you hear what I said?" Yes we heard what you said but we also know what you were trying to imply and you got called on it.  Good job by AP reporter Glen Johnson.  Let's see these kind of reporter questions and call outs across the board.
Isn't it the same thing from GOP when GOP charges at Bill Clinton for his infamous I-don't-inhale line?

Romney is ridiculous.
Republicans and Democrats are idiot.
Actually, he made a very valid point.  Reminiscent of his Bain experience, he has surrounded himself with those who offer differing opinions.  Just because the guy is on his team, doesn't mean that he is running the show or dictating his campaign's style. An adviser is an adviser.  A manager runs things.

I don't really see this guy as any more a "flip-flopper" than any other person in the race.
What to advisers do?  They advise, and that is NOT the same as running a campaign.
Watching the Media

Get a clue. Any reporter who lets a candidate tell a bold faced lie and doesn't challenge the lie, shouldn't even call themselves a journalist. The man (mitt)has no shame about telling lies. A few more episodes like this and maybe he'll catch on. They call them reporters, not transcribers. Just tell some resemblance of the truth and you probably won't get interrupted. Mitt's evil is on full display day after day. Thank God, somebody said something when he tried to float that whopper. Whoppers don't deserve respect, and whoppers should always be interrupted when they rear their Mittly head.
That reporter was out of line.  Mitt didn't lie.  The guy doesn't get paid.  He's not involved in senior campaign meetings.  Give me a break.  You can tell that reporter was moody with Romney.  Romney didn't "blow up," he defended himself.
Also, if all the commenters can do it mention "flip flop" every time a post is made about Romney they need to (a) do their research and (b) learn to change it up and be a little more creative.
Well, well, well! Plastic man has somethin stickin'to to him! The man is a true Bush-ite. Makes up his own version of reality as he goes along
Good goin',AP.
He flip flopped on MA power plant pollution regulations and his involvement in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Romney supports everything George Bush has done.  So, if you like the way George Bush has done business, Vote for Romney.  Romney for keeping things exactly the same!!!
We want more of the same!
How can anyone support a person who lies?!  An advisor is there to help run things OR???  Send the man back to his world, but do not let him run ours.
Every campaign has advisers that are lobbyists.  This is a non-issue.  The reporter worked for a newspaper that is left leaning and supports McCain.
Look at the fox news video "setting the record straight"
Among lowcountry campaigners, Mitt comes out on top.  For media hypes: Glen, you're no Dan Rather - but your profession is gaining on Washington law makers in race to bottom of popularity poll.
HANDSOME MIT has experience.

BARAK has platitudes.
Scott then Romney should have said that Kaufman was on the team not running the show first not "I don’t have lobbyists running my campaign. I don’t have lobbyists that are tied to my..."  Kaufman has access that not many people do and that influence is probably being used (since that is what a lobbyist does for a living) to help steer the Romney campaign.  I would define that as helping run the campaign and for Romney to try to imply otherwise is dishonest.  It's like when I was a kid and I said I didn't break the vase but really I shoved my brother into the table and he broke the vase.  Be honest and say you take advise from everyone you can including lobbyists and then you do what you know is right or what they tell you to do so you can get money in donations.  (Oh, I guess you can't do that huh?)
Joe in Biloxsi speaks reams with only five words. When will the american people wake up and understand that we are controlled by two parties, thus the old saying divide and control {conquer}, they keep us divided and we keep loosing control. Wake up!!
Whow... There are some poisenous snakes in this discussion!!! Fact is that Mitt Romney is the most honest, capable, and independant candidate running for President.
Those that accuse him of "flip-flopping" don't know anything about LIFE! I am glad Romney has the guts to admit that he is learning as he continues to serve this Country. I wouldn't want a President that was born with one opinion and dies that way. Those that have the honesty to really look at Romney's record have to acknowledge that he always had fundamental principles that he adhered to. He is unlike the opportunists that I see in Hillary and also McCain. THEY are the ones that hang their flag into the wind of opinion polls ...!
I'm glad Mitt's out in front. The democratic nominie will have no problem beatling this idiot.
This guy is a sycophant for the Clintons. (A little googling of his articles show that) He also appears to despise Romney because of his religion. Ignoring the politics, ( I have no feelings for Romney one way or the other)  one simply has to wonder how his bosses at AP who are running a business can square this with their professed neutrality. And, why do they continue to let him cover the Romney campaign.  For this type of confrontation? What a sorry business.  I prefer watching the restart of American Idol to watching this petty coverage.
Glen Johnson is rude and impertinent.  He is just another reporter who needs to report rather than attempt to make news.  Mr. Romney is no different from any other candidate with respect to his advisers.  Whether he is a "flip-flopper" is also immaterial because every politition (and every other human) has changed positions on almost every opinion he/she has ever held.  Have your opinions: we all do.  The important thing is to actually vote when the time comes.
Steve, Myrtle Point, Oregon:'...How can anyone support a person who lies?!...'

It's EASY !!
Just ask any Clinton supporters ....

Romney and Clinton would be the two WEAKEST candidates for their respective parties

Neither has an honest bone in their bodies

Joe Pittsburgh PA: '....Other than abortion what can you point to that he has flip flopped on?...'

Uuuuuuh .......
Gay rights ?
Wasn't Mitt FOR THEM when he was running for Mass Senator ?

I think he's against them now
I think he claimed to be a 'big game hunter'...
jj: '...HANDSOME MIT has experience.

BARAK has platitudes.,,,'

and Hillary has smears
(and 35 (?) years of 'experience'  (sic)

I believe this is the same Glen Johnson who was the Boston Globe's lead political reporter for years, so its not just an AP scribe.  So not only would he be knowledgable about Governor Romney, his policies and his campaign but also anyone who wants to blame him for bias should ask John Kerry how he feels about Glen Johnson's reporting...
As one who makes their living in this area, I can tell you that anyone who thinks that consultants run the campaign is showing their stupidity or ignorance.  Or, just simply doesn't like Romney, and doesn't have the maturity to simply say so.
Love it. Glen Johnson always has articles about Romney.
Having been a management consultant for 30-old years I can relate well to Gov. Romney's frustration with both Glen Johnson and, in general, the media's understanding the distinction between "running" and "advising" the campaign. The consuntant's mind set contextualizes the former as the decision-making and/or management/supervisory process versus the latter as an information source only. This is a distinction WITH a difference. And it would serve your audience better if your own sources - reporters, in this case - were so enlightened.
Anyone who would vote for Mitt Romney is an idiot.  All of the proof with his 1st hand spoken flip floppin talk.  I bet there a lot of people in Michigan going "oh crap, I voted for him?"  Wow.

Thanks to the excellent journalism where this reporter actually did his job!

Booo  Mitt Flopper Romney.  BOOOOO  Booooooo
"Lying, I'm going to have to do a lot of lying."--Mitt Romney, note to self.
