Radio ad has Obama rivals crying foul

A Spanish-language radio ad slamming Clinton on behalf of Obama has all three Democratic campaigns up in arms.

UNITE HERE, which has endorsed Obama and is the parent union of the Culinary Workers Union, paid for the ad. In its English translation, the ad charges that Clinton has tried to disenfranchise “working people.” It calls the move “unforgivable” and the New York senator “shameless.” Then it continues to persuade listeners to support Obama.

“Sen. Obama is defending our right to vote,” the man says. “Sen. Obama wants our votes. He respects our votes, our community, and our people. Sen. Obama’s campaign slogan is “Sí Se Puede, Sí se puede.” ("Yes We Can"). Vote for a president that respects us and that respects our right to vote.”

This independent radio ad refers to the lawsuit by the state teachers union -- which technically neutral but is also led by some Clinton supporters –- over the Nevada Democratic Party setting up special caucus sites for Las Vegas Strip casino workers. Many of those workers are members of the Culinary Union, Nevada’s largest and most influential union, which has endorsed Obama. A federal judge yesterday upheld these caucus sites.

Edwards cried foul yesterday, comparing these ads to the TV ad local SEIU chapters ran on Edwards’ behalf in Iowa shortly before its caucuses. At that time, Obama insisted that Edwards should denounce the ads publicly, adding that Edwards’ former campaign manager ran the organization coordinating the ads. Edwards did denounce the ad, which only mentioned the former North Carolina senator's health-care plan in a positive light; it didn’t mention any other candidates.

In separate statements yesterday from Edwards and senior adviser Jonathan Prince the Edwards campaign called on Obama to denounce the Nevada ads. Obama spokesman Bill Burton responded last night: “Sen. Obama believes, and has said clearly, that campaigns should fund themselves and discourages supporters from spending outside the campaign. But no one should be confused about the effort that was run on behalf of John Edwards in Iowa. In that case, it was not the independent speech of individual union members, each contributing small amounts to amplify their voices. It was a special project of outside donors funding a massive 527 effort run by one of Edwards’ top political lieutenants.”

For its part, Clinton’s campaign hosted a conference call yesterday afternoon with two members of its Hispanic Leadership Council, Dolores Huerta (a co-founder of the United Farm Workers) and Maria Echaveste (who served as a deputy chief of staff for President Bill Clinton). The women called on Obama to distance himself from the ad, which they labeled “desperate.”

Well, the ad is true, so what is the problem?

The "Clintons" should have thought about that before they filed the suit. (Yeah, I know, they had NOTHING to do with it. Right.)

Since both Clinton and Edwards have already received the support of these 527 groups, why should Senator Obama be any different? Another case of the other campaigns "hoping" that Senator Obama is really just as naive as they say he is.
Gee... Clinton and Edwards don't like the taste of their own medicine?

Everything in Obama's ad is arguably true (she is shameless, she doesn't care about others, etc).  Everything in Clinton's mailers attacking Obama are demonsterably false (that he was at some time pro-life?! that he was at some time in favor of Yucca mountain?!)
OOH  don't like it when someone plays your game, do we..

But is the commercial FALSE... I don't think so...

The TTRUTH can be a powerful thing....
BTW, the reason behind brouhaha is perhaps less obvious in translation.  Calling someone a "sin verguenza" is not just averring they they are shameless (as your translation indicates): it is very much a slur/accusation that is simply NOT done in polite discourse. Slurring someone as a person without honor crosses a major line that might not be apparent to Anglos.  Novices think that politics in the Latino community is about translating your English message into Spanish, but pros understand it is about culture, whether the ad is in Spanish or English. Bad move on UNITE's part.
"Un hombre que habla dos lenguas, vale dos hombres." - Lupe Huerta. (The first Spanish I ever learned.)
Well, well, well, Mr Obama and his followers are showing their true colors now eh? Nasty, lying, rotten, campaigning. Oh, but his cult like followers will NEVER, EVER believe that he is acting just like all the rest of the politicians running for office. He is just like the Clintons, only with NO experience to tackle world issues or the swiftboater types either.
It looks like Obama is the one tried to divide democrats. This is not good. We need to stay positive and get the GOP out of the whitehouse.
I think the ad is pretty darn accurate, and I hope it is effective!!
IM SO TIRED OF HEARING ABOUT THE CLINTON LEGACY, THIS WAS A MAN THAT HAD8 YEARS OF COCAINE USE AS GOVERNOR, ACCORDING TO HIS OWN BROTHER, HAD CLOSE TIES TO DAN LASATER, A COCAINE DISTRIBUTOR, AND WAS PARDONED BY CLINTON AS GOVERNOR.  WHEN ELECTED PRESIDENT, AFTER SHAKING HANDS WITH HUNDREDS OF FOLLOWERS, A LOCAL TV GUY HEARD HILLARY LAUGHING AND TELLING BILL, WE JUST SCREWED ALL THOSE PEOPLE OUT THERE.  HIS LAST BUSINESS WAS TO PARDON HUNDREDS OF DRUG DEALERS, CRIMINALS, AND TERROSISTS FOR LOTS OF MONETARY GAINS.  WHAT A LEGACY; NOW THE SAME TRASH WANTS TO ELECT THEN AGAIN.  AS BILL SAYS GIMME A BREAK;
Union decides endorsement.
Members decide candidates.
Union endorse Obama.
People endorse Hillary.

Since Obama has not been vocal enough about the teacher union's lawsuit that attempted to supress votes.  I think its a fair move to bring this issue to light one way or another.  I believe Bill Clinton made a big mistake when he said he supported the lawsuit.
Come on Obamites, defend him and his quick embrace of dirty tactics. Is he the change candidate or the "do as I say not as I do" guy? Or is he the "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" guy. Enlighten us simple folk who just think he has a double standard.
which they labeled “desperate.”

Interesting that they did not call it factually incorrect.  Nor can they.  The fact of the matter is that supporters of Senator Clinton filed suit to make it harder for workers at casinos (a sizeable portion of which are Hispanics) to vote.  Bill Clinton then voices his support for the suit on Monday and reaffirms such support during an interview with a reporter on Wednesday.  So tell what is factually incorrect with the statement that Senator Clinton's campaign supported a lawsuit that sought to make it harder for working men and women to vote?  Seems to me her campaign just does not like being called out on her effort at vote suppression.  I thought such tactics were what Republicans tried to do to Democrats, but I guess the Clinton machine has decided to take yet another play from the Karl Rove playbook in an effort to salvage its campaign.
If this ad was supporting Hillary Clinton, people would jump all over it, blasting it up and down and calling it more of her nasty tactics. Even though it was independent of the campaign, everyone would say " yeah right, she knew all about it" Lets see if prince obama gets the same criticism.  I didnt see him denouncing the ad either. No hears that blip at the end that says paid for by... blah blah blah  its the ad itself....
Let's see one is a union ad backed by thousands of working people trying to voice their political beliefs.  The other is a 527 run by an Edwards' operative funded by a billionaire nanogenarian.

Seems like the son of a millworker might understand the difference.
Complain coming from Hillary's campaing does not resonate well given that they were indirectly behind the disengenuous lawsuit. Same thing can be said about Edward's for his similar add in Iowa. BUT, calling Hillary "shameless" does not sell the add in the positive lite for Obama. It would be better sell without that.
Having lived in Las Vegas for over a year I know there is a large population of illegal foreign nationals, employed by the casino'a and the entertainment industry. Hopefully there is enough supervision to detect at the Nevada caucases illegal voting. The culinary union which I belonged to has thousands of workers, who are not legally in this nation and will without hesitation break any law to gain an advantage. According to the 2006 U.S. census, it is estimated there are 610,000 Latino's in Nevada. Voting is a citizens right, a privilege given to us by the U.S. Constitution.  Looks like advocate judges are interpreting the law, as they see fit. Example allowing Caucases to be acceptable in a gambling Casino, where illegal aliens voting would be a travesty of our Democratic process. Does the law of Perjury apply in a Caucase environment, when it come to voting for a presidential nominee?
The Clintons  are hypocrites.  They tried unsuccessfully to disinfranchise voters and now they are crying foul? They're using vile Rovian tactics on OBAMA and still think we're stupid.  Get over it.
Please get the ads right!

This campaign is not Senator Obama vs. Senator Clinton.

This campaign is:

Senator Obama vs. ex-president Bill Clinton (whose looking forward to a third term).

Senator Obama hasn't a prayer against the Clinton machine.
Can someone show me where Obama has denounced this ad?

Obama spokesman Bill Burton responded last night: “Sen. Obama believes, and has said clearly, that campaigns should fund themselves and discourages supporters from spending outside the campaign.

I think Obama should come out himself and say, I don't agree with this ad.  Somehow I don't think he will, because like the rest of them, he's a politician and he's doing whatever it takes to win.  I don't blame him, but just remember, Clinton is taking heat for something they didn't endorse, which was the law suit.  This is just politics.  This has been my point all along.  You are never going to be able to stop 527's or independent groups from speaking out on your behalf, even if you don't like what they have to say.  Romney may not like the attacks against McCain in SC, but he will definitely accept the votes that come his way because of it. Just like Obama will love the votes that come his way because of the radio ad and just like Bush who got won SC in 2000 because they did this crap to McCain.  He's sitting in the Whitehouse because of it.
Obama must come out "immediately", "today" and "denounce" thease smear ads. It sounds like a "Republican" ploy. This is discusting way to run your campaign, Senator Obama. You do not deserve to run for this office. Period !
It is getting quite obvious to me that Barack Obama wants it both ways, "have his cake and eat it too." The very negative ad towards Hillary Clinton from the Nevada Culinary Union is just another example of how Obama looks the other way when the personal attacks are not against him, but when the attacks are about him,  he goes on the defense.  Obama has yet to really apologive for anything derogatory and wrong towards his opponents from his surrogates.  Although I truly like Obama, I am beginning to be troubled by him and his judgements.  It is about time a little humility is brought to his shield.
PULL THEASE "SMEAR ADS" TODAY , MR. OBAMA. THIS IS B.S. !!!
Let the slinging of political mud commence!!  Tooth and nail baby!!  Just another great reason to vote for the most ubiquitous of candidates "None of the Above"!!!
Obama's hope of politics message works with only his cult members. This is a Desperate act. He needs to stop this. He needs to give more information on how he intends to bring change when establishment characters like John Kerry and Feingold endorsing him. I think he is a establishment candidate who supports Regan. Support Edwards.
This is rich now Clinton is still crying. I must ask is the ad telling the truth. The teacher union and the Clinton's did try and keep the member of the Culinary Union from have the right to caucuse at the Hotels where they work. If you try and stop someone who has the right to vote from voting than that is disenfranchisment, and should be called as such
Booo Hooo Hooo!

I think everyone should stick it to clinton.  She is a disgrace!
This is despicable. How many times over, would Hillary be called a racist if she ran ad's like this?
She wasn't even behind the lawsuit to stop voting in the casinos, The NEA was. (Though, I do agree with them; the idea of having caucuses, or election activity of any type in a freakin' casino for chripe's sake, cheapens the office for which the election is being held. We might as well have voting in liquor stores, strip-bars, and cat-houses.)
I'm curious to know why Obama and his people are being allowed to get away with all of this, and why the media never takes them to task for any of it.
They really have run a filthy, dirty campaign, and tried to blame it all on Hillary.
It is this kind of abject behavior on the part of Obama, that would never allow me to vote for him under any circumstances.
I certainly hope the voters in the State of Nevada see through these tactics, and reject Obama's message of folly.
Who's playing dirty politics now?

St Obama?
I can't believe people are being fooled by Obama's act, he voted to extend NAFTA into Peru outsourcing more jobs and he voted for the Patriot Act and co-sponsored a bill designating the Iranin Revolutionary Guard a terrorists organization, Edwards is right to criticize Obama
real crys this time Edward come on dude you may win

..... a tear drop" Edward.... make it rain
He is only fighting back. Hillary cannot call anyone desperate when her husband has been calling foul over voters voting on the strip. Again, union members paid for the ad not Obama. She said comments made by BET founder were his opinion an she was not responsible for it. In this case this was the opinion of union members, so Obama is not responsible for it. What's good for the goose is good for the gander!!
OBAMA 08'
Its really interesting that Edwards and Clinton would respond the way they did.  For Clintons folks to speak out the way they have has exposed its true colors. THIS SAME UNION has been sought out by the clinton campaign repeatedly!!  And now since they did not give her the endorsement the teachers union(Which clinton supporters lead) want to file a lawsuit?  What a F'in crybaby.  And since when were lawsuits put together so quickly?

Edwards I dont even need to elaborate,,,just read the damn quote
"In that case, it was not the independent speech of individual union members, each contributing small amounts to amplify their voices. It was a special project of outside donors funding a massive 527 effort run by one of Edwards’ top political lieutenants"

Edwards is a decent guy, i just hope he runs with Obama. They would make a very strong statement
What kind of country are we living in that presidential candidates are expected to "denounce" perfectly legitimate political speech?  UNITE HERE has an opinion; they bought an ad to air it.  What's the harm?  Our laws restricting political speech are abominable and ought to be repealed.  And those that advocate them should be run out of office, not promoted (I'm looking at you, Senator McCain).
Edward's commercial was paid for by his campaign unlike Obama's. Now that they are being picked on in return they are crying foul. Please!

OBAMA 08'
Hillary likes to have it both ways.  She seems perfectly comfortable with having her surrogates be her attack dogs, while she takes the high road.  But, God forbid if someone might try the same tactic on her...  Ah, forever the victim.

What is most interesting about this is that these attack ads do not misrepresent her...  The Clinton campaign was perfectly comfortable to disenfranchise a whole group of voters as soon as it seemed those voters would not swing her way.  It seems for the Clintons that their own sense of entitlement and access to power is more important than the health of the party as a whole.
So much for the politics of hope.

This is disgusting and from a campaign and a candidate that promised not to do "politics as usual"
If I were a Republican I would fund ads like this just to get the Dems to fight one another.

With two great candidate why don't we just stop now and have a co-presidency? Obama could be the National spokesmodel (since he seems to think he is on some sort of reality show contest) and Clinton can be the CEO of the county. Obama doesn't have the depth of connections that will be needed to staff the Administration and the last thing we want are the unions back in charge.
This stinks, just like Obama. Say one thing and then run a dirty campaign. He's a looser, with a big mouth.
go home-it's handsome mit/stolid con Thompson-hottie(fox news)wife.
Wow.  I just re-read the Obama campaign's statement.  The campaign officially "discourages supporters from spending outside the campaign."  This is positively chilling, since often the only way for someone not affiliated with a campaign to get their specific message out is by spending.  In other words, entrenched politicians want the only things said about them to be their own approved messages and no one else gets to spend a penny to get their message out.  We call this free speech, democracy, freedom?
Now you know damn well that if someone endorsing Hillary had run such an ad, there would be an uproar from Obama's camp.

By the way, it would be nice, First Read, if you would post one of my comments.  Not sure when the last time you let one through was.  Sort of disappointing, considering people calling Hillary a whore and speculating on her ability to perform oral sex get their comments posted.

Ah well.  Fair and balanced, it ain't.
"yes we can"? What are we all three-year-olds? I'd like Obama to talk issues like how to balance the budget, make peace, single payer health care. I guess he's got the three-year-old vote locked up.
LIBS to dumb to be annoyed at MEDIOCRE dem choices.

TOM BRADY Mit.
Obama is creepy.
VALEDICTORIAN/GOVERNOR/'some'BUSINESS EXPERIENCE.

-HANDSOME ARTICULATE-

mit romney.
Obama Supporter here, and yes, Obama needs to step up and denounce.
Obama and the Culinary Workers are Speaking Truth to the Clinton Machine of divisiveness. Members of the Teachers Union should see themselves as having more in common with the every day lives of the Culinary Workers and less in common with the big money Pharmacy, Financial, Industrial and Entertainment Lobbyist that back the Clintons.
OBAMA has 3 autobiographies out.

BECAUSE HE'S DUMB.
Look.  The teacher's union filed the lawsuit independantly of the Clinton campaign.  That's not in dispute and I'm even willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they weren't coordinating with the teacher's union.  But the difference here is that when asked for comment about what was happening Bill came out with his "cullinary union members get 5 times the impact of everyone else if this goes through, blah blah blah" rant.  Never mind that I don't see how one vote equals five just because they vote in an at large precinct.

The Clinton campaign, whether or not they had a hand in filing the lawsuit, SUPPORTED the lawsuit in their rhetoric.  And quite frankly, if I was elligible to vote at on of those at large precincts, I would vote for Gravel before I voted for Clinton.

The Clintonistas should not be shocked and shaken if those at large precincts go Obama by a wide margin.  You reap what you soe.
