Radio ad has Obama rivals crying foul

A Spanish-language radio ad slamming Clinton on behalf of Obama has all three Democratic campaigns up in arms.

UNITE HERE, which has endorsed Obama and is the parent union of the Culinary Workers Union, paid for the ad. In its English translation, the ad charges that Clinton has tried to disenfranchise “working people.” It calls the move “unforgivable” and the New York senator “shameless.” Then it continues to persuade listeners to support Obama.

“Sen. Obama is defending our right to vote,” the man says. “Sen. Obama wants our votes. He respects our votes, our community, and our people. Sen. Obama’s campaign slogan is “Sí Se Puede, Sí se puede.” ("Yes We Can"). Vote for a president that respects us and that respects our right to vote.”

This independent radio ad refers to the lawsuit by the state teachers union -- which technically neutral but is also led by some Clinton supporters –- over the Nevada Democratic Party setting up special caucus sites for Las Vegas Strip casino workers. Many of those workers are members of the Culinary Union, Nevada’s largest and most influential union, which has endorsed Obama. A federal judge yesterday upheld these caucus sites.

Edwards cried foul yesterday, comparing these ads to the TV ad local SEIU chapters ran on Edwards’ behalf in Iowa shortly before its caucuses. At that time, Obama insisted that Edwards should denounce the ads publicly, adding that Edwards’ former campaign manager ran the organization coordinating the ads. Edwards did denounce the ad, which only mentioned the former North Carolina senator's health-care plan in a positive light; it didn’t mention any other candidates.

In separate statements yesterday from Edwards and senior adviser Jonathan Prince the Edwards campaign called on Obama to denounce the Nevada ads. Obama spokesman Bill Burton responded last night: “Sen. Obama believes, and has said clearly, that campaigns should fund themselves and discourages supporters from spending outside the campaign. But no one should be confused about the effort that was run on behalf of John Edwards in Iowa. In that case, it was not the independent speech of individual union members, each contributing small amounts to amplify their voices. It was a special project of outside donors funding a massive 527 effort run by one of Edwards’ top political lieutenants.”

For its part, Clinton’s campaign hosted a conference call yesterday afternoon with two members of its Hispanic Leadership Council, Dolores Huerta (a co-founder of the United Farm Workers) and Maria Echaveste (who served as a deputy chief of staff for President Bill Clinton). The women called on Obama to distance himself from the ad, which they labeled “desperate.”

Wow, Barack Obama, the Golden God of Change sure is different from politics as usual; no double standard and no double talk.  Gimme a break.  This is the same old tired political game that candidates always play.  What makes Obama more dispicible is that he runs around acting like his sh!& don't stink.  Sounds more like the Karl Rove school than change.  Take it back to Illinois Senator.
i am surprised the clinton campaign is complaining. they have run the most negative, desperate campaign i have seen, as if their lives depend on the presidency.
S T O P   T H E A S E   A D S   N O W  !
yet another example of obama grasping at straws and trying to do anything and everything to save his slipping poll numbers....at this rate if edwards can hang in there he be running even with obama by feb 6
I PREDICT THE END OF AMERICA IF A DEMOCRAT IS ELECTED

THERE WOULD BE NO ARMY TO PROCTECT AMERICA, WHO WOULD SERVE UNDER A DEMOCRAT?  CORPORATIONS, WHO HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO LAST THEM FOREVER WOULD CLOSE DOWN RATHER THAN LET DEMOCRATS TAX THEM INTO BANKRUPTCY.  SO WITHIN 3 MONTHS NO JOBS FOR ANYONE, NO ARMY, NO HEALTHCARE FOR ANYONE, ALL HOMES RE POSSESED, NO FOOD, AND ONLY 2 IDIOTS LIKE THE CLINTONS TRYING TO LEAD THE DECENT PEOPLE OF THIS WORLD.  THIS IS WHY WE HATE THE DEMOCRATS FOREVER.

Boy this is getting ugly!  But I find it midly amusing that the Clinton campaign would have the audacity to call any tactic desperate.
First of all let me say that I'm for Obama, and on a visceral level I'm glad to see somebody give it back to the Clintons.  Nobody deserves it more.

Having said that, Clinton backers should be encouraged because you only do this stuff if you're losing.

By the way, has anybody seen an Obama sign in California?  I haven't.
Obama the hypocrite.
Ok, let's look at this...the Clinton campaign alienates black voters in favor of the Hispanic vote; when Obama wins the Culinary Union, Clinton supporters try to disenfranchise the Hispanic vote.  More of the 'plausible deniability' dirty politics. Now, after the ruling goes in favor of the DC who set up the at-large caucus (with full approval and signature of Clinton supporters), the Clinton campaign is back to being for Hispanics.  And here comes this ad - which basically states the attempt to disenfranchise Hispanic voters, Clinton campain wants Obama to distance himself from it...what next?  The courts dismissed the case and let the at-large precincts stand, decided on almost a year ago...you can't attempt to disenfranchise a group of people and not expect it to backfire...
Let's drop all this 'attack the opponent', and simply state your views...
Obama's resume is pretty impressive - including being elected 4 years before Clinton.  I've yet to see Clinton's resume out there - and, this 35 years of experience I keep hearing about?  Clinton's only been a Senator since 2001...my suggestion to all voters out there?  Do not take what you hear in ads, speeches, etc. as 'gospel', look at the candidates' records of service.  Find out for yourselves...read, look at facts, rather than 'innuendo', take what you read in the paper as perhaps 'slanted', pick out the facts, and then make your decision...it's important for America that now, more than ever, we do NOT repeat the mistakes of the past.  America needs to look FORWARD, not backward!
Obama the hypocrite.
It's funny that you claime that UNITE here is acting on behalf of Obama. You were silent when AFSCME and pro Edwards groups spent MILLIONS of unreagulated $$ in Iowa directly promoting their candidate.

No shame, Mr Murray
Do the Clintons think the church going people, who work for their living would let them lead us.  We will never accept the perverted Clintons to lead us.  I can almost promise you a worse situation than Iraoq. We already hate the democrats as much as you can hate someone. We pay most of the taxes, and we are sick of the welfare, the drugs, the baby killing, and the military hating
Golly, who'd have ever thought that Obama (via supporters) would have resorted to "slimy politics"?  This kind of "slime" has no place in politics (nor does the sleazy slime being perpetrated toward McCain in South Carolina). I wish there was a law which would disqualify candidates whose supporters or campaigns pull this crap.

OH, Clinton and Edwards don’t like the radio ad.   I wonder why, because they didn’t think of it first?   By the way, I too believe that the Clinton machine was behind the lawsuit.  Score one for Obama.   Finally people are seeing the light.   IT’S TIME FOR CHANGE (IMPROVEMENT) – VOTE BARACK OBAMA!!!!
Obama has always been a traitor to the democratic party.
He ignores party loyalists by auctioning party values to so-called independants and republicans.
He seemed to have forgotton that this is democratic primary.
This is about selecting a candidate who represent party values.
He can appeal to the middle in a general election.
Before that he needs get the nomination.
He's so full of it, and thinks he's better than rest of the democrats.
He insults democrats saying they are dividers.
No one better divides party than Obama.
How can he unite the country by dividing his own  party?
The ad is pure and simple b. s.. It has allready been decided that the caucus will be held in some of the casinos. Go Luck dirty tricks.. Obama. The law suit to stop it from being in some casinos, was not brought on by Clinton or Edwards. Obama must come out "today' and denounce thease ads, and they need to be pulled "immediately" ,if not sooner.Thease are tacktics used by the Republican Party.
FACTS REGARDING OBAMA'S PRESIDENCY (SHOULD THAT HAPPEN)
1.  HE WILL GIVE EVERY AFRICAN AMERICAN REPARATIONS
WHICH CONSISTS OF 40 ACRES AND A MULE.
Al Sharpton wants this to happen too.

2.  JEREMIAH WRIGHT, HIS PASTOR OF THE "RACIST BLACK CHURCH" OBAMA IS A MEMBER OF WILL BE NAMED "SECRETARY OF STATE"

3.  LOUIS FARRAKHAN WILL BE NAMED " SECRETARY OF DEFENSE" AND WILL BUILD THE ARMY OF "BLACK PANTHERS"
4.  TONY REZCO WILL BE NAMED OBAMA'S chairman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers.

5.  JOHN KERRY WILL BE OBAMA'S VICE PRESIDENT.

Now folks based on these predictions don't you think it is just better to go ahead and vote for Hillary.

HILLARY 08

The add says that Hillary Clinton doesn't care about Latinos.

The Obama campaign's insistence on playing the race card is unfortunate.
So ... how is that ad wrong?  Clinton supporters tried to change the rules two days after Obama got that support.
Bill Clinton said he supported the lawsuit.
It is obvious that the Clintons are trying to silence Obama supporters by changing the rules the week before the caucus.
I ask again.  How is that ad wrong?
In Iowa, Obama claimed the union sponsoring the pro-Edwards ad was a special interest group and therefore Edwards should ask them to stop running the ad.
Now the union (special interest group?) is supporting Obama, so I guess that makes it ok. I have only 1 word which explains this: Hypocrasy.
P.S. Wasn't it John Edwards who informed us that it was illegal for him to contact or coordinate with these 527 groups in any way? Apparently, Senator Obama is not bound by these same rules all of a sudden. Hmmmmm.
Union decides endorsement.
Members decide candidates.
Union endorse Obama.
People endorse Hillary.

Why would I vote for a candidate with no morals?

Why would I vote for someone I have never heard of?

Why can't one person make a difference anymore?

Why do be vote for a president only to find out later that it was the worst choice in the world?

I"m at a point of not voting, what's the POINT everthing is going downhill anyways.
If Hillary put an ad out like this Obama and his supporters would call her a racist.
Obama is despicable.
By the way...I see FIRST READ is playing the censorship game again.
I think the ad is about as genuiune, as Senator Obama is. And he the biggest "fake" I have ever heard.
5 of the people who filed the lawsuit are Clinton supporters who were on the committee that APPROVED of the site location in March.  Bill said he supported the lawsuit.  The lawfirms have donated heavily to Clinton in the past.

Anyone who believes the dirty Clintons weren't behind this must also still believe that Monica Lewinsky was some big Republican plot to give Bill a bad rep...

I apologize to those of you that think Obama supporters must always be so positive and optimistic, but you throw dirt in someone's face long enough, blatantly lie to the American public about Obama's positions and policies like Clinton continually does,  then you're going to get a little flack back.  I'm not running for President.  I'm voting for one.  I don't have to be nice.  I can speak the truth.  The Clintons' deceptions and lies are downright -disgusting-.  How does it feel to be USED for their personal self-delight?

It's time for change.  McCain is picking up in South Carolina.  I hope to god he wins the Republican nomination if the democrats are naive enough to elect Hillary Clinton.  He'll have my vote over her in a heartbeat.  But in the meantime, Obama all the way!  We NEED change.  I don't want to turn the TV on in one year, only to see nothing getting done, only to see Hillary blaming Republicans in Congress for not passing her bills.
I find it interesting that some people like to bash the Clintons no matter what they do.  I wish I could find out how these people voted in 2000 and 2004.  I do not doubt that the majority of them voted for the incompetency of George W. Bush.  Therefore,  in my book, these people have no credibility what so ever (kinda sounds like "W' huh...)  The best choice for Presindent is Hillary Clinton.  I think we all know that there are going to be flaws with no matter who we vote into ofice (anyone who believes different probably considers themselves perfect and flawless!!), however, Hillary has the capability and competency to repair relationships throughout the world that we have deteriorated over the past 8 LONG years as well as the knowledge and background to bring the POSITIVE CHANGE we need on education, healthcare, and the economy.   VOTE HILLARY in 2008!!!!
Question? doe's anyone know if there is any truth to this rumor that Hillary was a republican during the sixties? Also here maiden name is Rodum. Is she an old money Rodem?
Dear Betty, S.C.:

Your post just set South Carolina back 100 years.

Obama '08
Come on Nevada, every vote counts!

Go Edwards, he is the only one who can deliver crossover votes in Nov.

Republicans will never crossover and vote for Clinton or Obama.
ABH ABH (anyone but hillary).  put DOWn that Crown!

hey-hey ho ho, dynasty has GOT to go!
OMG!!

Obama's gambit at damage control.

This is nothing more than a "make them think about this" political ploy, to try and diffuse the second political gaff, in almost as many days by Obama.  First saying he is a disorganized hands off Presidential candidate.  Then talking about Ronald Reagan, being a fundamental agent of change.... Ronald Reagan did more to undermine working people, and the middle class than than the present GWB could ever dream of... It's unbelievable that Obama would use his as a platform for his message of change.

Both gaffs **highlight** Obama's real lack of understanding... Then there is his church minister, yeah that's right Obama's Church Minster who married Obama, coming out and embracing Louis Farrakhan, this is not Obama's fault, but is Obama so naive to believe that this is not "nitroglycerin glycerin" in the hands of republicans...

All of it....  His self proclaimed disorganized approach to leadership, then Ronald Reagan, and now his place of worship embracing Louis Farrakhan....

*I want my vote to count,* I have been leaning back and fourth between Hillary Clinton and Obama, and I have not excluded Edwards, when push comes to shove...  But I am begging to see Obama's amateurish self destructiveness really taking center stage....  At this point I do not see him being able to handle the Republicans.  They will take his "Zen" message of change/uniter and serve him for a light appetizer on the Republican attack machines table... Sorry folks he just doesn't have it, he will not survive on "training wheels" against the Republicans.

For sure my vote will go to Clinton or Edwards, in the primary.  At this point, I am beginning to wonder if Obama is going to become a liability even as VP on the ticket.  He gives great speech's so did Ronald Reagan.

Ronald Reagan took health care away from the Elderly, College tuition was virtually free at the UNIV of CALIFORNIA, he increased tuition in the state dramatically, he also took money away from student loans, and on top of that added additional student loan disbursement fees, in the hundreds of dollars.

He pointed to mostly single mothers on welfare, as being drunkards and to hear him say it were bankrupting the country.  The welfare budget was 1% of the national budget, just more Republican (BS) of beating up on little people who could not defend themselves.

He busted unions, gave massive tax cuts to top 1% of  richest Americans, and gave every penny he could rake and scrape out of the middle class to defense contractors.

He wasn't allowed to answerer questions on his own because of his lack of really understanding issues, he sleep in the White House, during meetings.... It's endless, of what a truly disaster of a President he was, with regard to everyday working people.  He was a good speaker, a great salesman, but a terrible President for working people...

I'm insulted that Obama chooses "Reaganism" as a platform to speak to, or try to crystallize his message of change.  Obama's an armature and the Republicans are licking their chops at the prospect of running against him.
The ad is totally true - she should get over it!  The only thing Obama might finesse out of it (aside from the Spanish slur someone pointed out) is: instead of outright calling her a liar, say "reasonable people would find it hard to swallow that her campaign had nothing to do with the suit, since the board of the union that filed it is peppered with her supporters.  It comes down to: the attempt to suppress votes came from the Clinton side, and that in itself speaks volumes."  Much cleaner that way. =)
PULL THEASE ADS NOW ! PULL THEASE ADS NOW ! PULL THEASE ADS NOW ! PULL THEASE ADS NOW ! PULL THEASE ADS NOW ! SENATOR OBAMA PULL THEASE ADS NOW !!!!!!!!

Having Union workers caucus inside a Union shop (business premise) is a situation ripe for abuse.  In a caucus, voters are supposedly free to stand up and speak for the candidates.  They vote publicly, with a show of hands.  There is potential for coercion of workers to vote the union line.  The workers know they are being watched by shop foremen and other union managers.  Looking at this from far away, caucusing at a union workplace makes me nervous.
OBAMA THE HYPOCRITE ! PULL THEASE ADS TODAY !
Barack Obama has never fooled me, and he never will.  It's just sad to see him fooling so many other people.  Hopefully, there are more people who see through his act, and they will vote for the candidate that has the ability, the experience, and the know how to lead America.  Hillary Clinton is that candidate!  Vote for Hillary Clinton!
Edwards would actually have a leg to stand on if it was a 527 of Obama's running the ads, but it's not, so that is not a legitimate argument.

Clinton would actually have a leg to stand on if the ad wasn't, ummm ... true!  She and her campaign could try honesty sometime, if they weren't so desperate to win.

To demonstrate that there are effective attacks on this particular advertisement, Dolores Huerta and Maria Echaveste are two very smart ladies per the exert.

Finally, the Culinary union is in its own right to publicize the matter that the teachers union took them to court for and LOST, because they were wrong and because they were politicized by the Clintons!
to beth: answer to your question NO. honey these are not facts, better check your "fairy tale" file.  This woman's (speaking of myself here) voting record goes back to 1972 (that's more than 35 years.....) and i will {only if NEED be} vote repub for the first time to keep Billary out of the white house.     Put DOWn that Crown.   "now ain't no need to question why, just let dynasties lay down and die..."   ABH ABH!   anyone but hillary
I love the fact that Hillary is getting a taste of her own medicine in the game of hardball politics. Obama is running a masterful campaign, even while he's being double-teamed by the pit-bull tactics of Hillary and Bill. Somehow Barack comes out smiling, witty, and positive. We are at the dawn of a new political era - the Obama Era.

As for the debate here in the FirstRead comments section: Seems obvious to me that most of the writers who support Hillary are mere shills and provocateurs. Especially when they accuse Obama of running a dirty campaign and paint Hillary as the candidate of principle, since that is the exact opposite of what's going on. And any objective observer knows it. Just read the European press to get an outside view.

Joe,

As you well know, the Obama campaign did not produce the ad. Nice try though.
dear beth:  these aren't facts,  better check your 'fairy tale' file....ABH ABH  anyone but hillary!

Daves, Indianapolis. IN: '...Having lived in Las Vegas for over a year I know there is a large population of illegal foreign nationals, employed by the casino'a and the entertainment industry....'

Didn't Hillary say: 'No waman is illegal' just a few days ago ?

Illegal aliens CAN'T CAUCUS
That's just a n excuse for the Clintons to try to suppress votes in Nevada
Caucusing in casinos was agreed to, 10 months ago
Nobody objected to this........
.... until the Culinary Workers Union endorsed Obama

Two days later Clinton flunkies (the teachers union) filed suit

Hillary was trying to suppress union voters and union members

Nothing wrong with this ad

Just say no to:
Monica Lewinsky's Ex-Boyfriend's Wife for President

Does Bill have a new girl friend ?
(he couldn't even wait until AFTER the nomination!)
Expect a lot more of them if Hillary is elected

normal people endorse Obama

Psycos endorse Clinton
To Betty, SC,

are you that desperate? seems like Obama is giving the Clintons a run for their money. what you fail to admit is, Obama is not running a black campaign but a national campaign, hence his broad national appeal. Obama is not in the league of the token black candidates that we've had. he is serious and in this for the long haul.
First of all let me say that I'm for Obama, and on a visceral level I'm glad to see somebody give it back to the Clintons.  Nobody deserves it more.

Look south to the Mexican border and you'll see them jumping the fence with Obama signs.  Free citizenships and drivers licenses for all; best of all you won't have to speak English.
Wonder just how many illegals will be voting at the casinos?  20-25% of the total Obama vote?
