Hillary blasts Obama over 'ideas' remark

Posted: Friday, January 18, 2008 5:14 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Andrea Mitchell and Mark Murray
LAS VEGAS, NV -- At an economic roundtable here Friday, Hillary Clinton criticized the economic stimulus plan President Bush announced this morning and slammed Barack Obama, saying she disagrees with his statement that Republicans have had the best ideas over the last 10 to 15 years.

"My leading opponent the other day said that he thought the Republicans had better ideas than Democrats the last 10 to 15 years. That's not the way I remember the last 10 to 15 years. I don't think it's a better idea to privatize Social Security. I don't think it's a better idea to try to eliminate the minimum wage. I don't think it's a better idea to undercut health benefits and to give drug companies the right to make billions of dollars by providing prescription drugs to Medicare recipients. I don't think it's a better idea to shut down the government, to drive us into debt. I think we know what needs to be done in America and I think we're ready to do it. I'm ready to lead on day one," she said.

Clinton was referring to comments that Barack Obama made earlier in the week to a Reno newspaper, when he said that both JFK and Ronald Reagan were change agents: “I think [John] Kennedy, twenty years earlier, moved the country in a fundamentally different direction. So I think a lot of it just has to do with the times.  I think we’re in one of those times right now. Where people feel like things as they are going aren’t working. We’re bogged down in the same arguments that we’ve been having, and they’re not useful.  And, you know, the Republican approach, I think, has played itself out. I think it’s fair to say the Republicans were the party of ideas for a pretty long chunk of time there over the last ten, fifteen years, in the sense that they were challenging conventional wisdom. Now, you’ve heard it all before. You look at the economic policies when they’re being debated among the Presidential candidates and it’s all tax cuts.  Well, you know, we’ve done that, we tried it.”

Obama spokesman Bill Burton gave this response, “It’s hard to take Hillary Clinton’s latest attack seriously when she’s the one who supported George Bush’s war in Iraq, the most damaging Republican idea of our generation. While others were triangulating and poll-testing their positions, Senator Obama has been fighting for progressive ideals for over two decades."

To pounce on Obama's comments, the Clinton team held a conference call with Rep. Barney Frank and other Clinton supporters blasting Obama for praising Reagan -- whom they blame for cutting govt programs for the poor. Yesterday, Edwards "strongly disagreed" with using Obama as an example of change. "When you think about what Ronald Reagan did to the American people. to the middle class, to the working people, he created a tax structure that favored the very wealthiest Americans and caused th middle class and working peop;le to struggle every single day.

I'm amazed that so many people can be blinded by their biased-based distorted perspective to even begin to support what Obama said.  I can't keep listening to someone who will not represent the interests of ALL Americans - and furthermore - was backed by Oprah showing both teaming up to promote the agenda of only one portion of a much broader composite population.
I Think Obama wiil make a good president but not in this elections. Maybe eight years from now. That will give him more time to recover from his cocaine addiction.
Look what happened with Mr. Bush!! He had the same problem and look were we are now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no reason to response to these stupid comments about Hillary, because the person, or people that printed them are anti Clinton. What do you expect from hitters that will be proven wrong at the end of the day. Hil last two wins will be repeated no matter what trash is being said about her. First Woman Present!!!

"...any vote that may lead to war should be hard -- but I cast it with conviction."

-- Hillary Clinton, October 10th, 2002

"That's what I'm opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics."

-- Barack Obama, October 2, 2002
You all should keep writting and sending wrong polls to fool Obama and his blind followers who want to hand out the next presidency to the Republicians easily. At the end of the day, we all Democrats will become the laughing stock.
Where are you, Josiah Bartlett?
The report out today fom Hillary's health care policy group, through FOIA request proves that even those involved knew it was a loser and undoable. She is not the smartest women in the world and her and Bill need to get back in the WH inorder to bury once and for all all the criminal things they did. I would bet the farm that in the next 10 years she will be in jail as she does not have presidential immunity.

She is a criminal and the rats will jump ship after she loses and there is no more power for them. The hold they have on the Sandy Bergers of the world will end and the real stories will come out. It will be fun.

It looks like Van who was angling for blogger in chief for Clinton has lost his keyboard.

Hillary Clinton does not respect the American People enough to discuss what Obama said openly and honestly.
Instead she bend it to her favor and bets that the public won't ever read what Obama actually said.

She is desperate.
Talk about SPIN....

They make it sounds like OBAMA is pro Bush. When he just said Reagan was an agent of change.

WTF!! CLINTONS!!
Clinto is dumber then a can of rocks.
"Yesterday, Edwards "strongly disagreed" with using Obama as an example of change."

Umm msnbc break out the eition should be

Yesterday, Edwards "strongly disagreed" with (OBAMA) using Reagan as an example of change.

And for those that missed it Obama did say republicans had the ideas over the past 10-15 years in the sense they challenged conventional wisdom.  Have yet to find a clip with the full context however.

Obama will change the Regan Republican wave and make it the Obama Democratic Wave! One more day with the Clinton's misleading comments!Bill Clinton had his chance, but his lower inclinations were stronger than his love for America. He threw away his possibility, and we democrats have been paying for it for the last 7 years.
Hillary has voted with the Republicans the whole time she's been in the Senate - on the war, on bankruptcy bills.  I think many people understand and respect what Obama said about Reagan.

Do we REALLY want the Clintons back in the White House ?  I'm sick of them already.
Hillary Clinton vs Barack Obama

Where to begin...

Let's start with trust.  I think most would agree that there has been a serious breach of trust committed by the Bush administration. Nobody trusts him or his cronies anymore and the consequences of his untruthfulness, or sheer ignorance, have not only siphoned off America's treasures and faith, but it has heavily stained our once honorable reputation around the world. We have learned the painful lesson of what happens when we lose trust in our leaders.

So what is it going to take to repair that trust?  It is going to take integrity beyond reproach.  It is going to take that special and rare individual that speaks the truth and doesn't hold anything back for convenience.  Trust is that feeling you have when you know you found the right doctor, or the right priest, or the right mechanic.  Trust is that bond that you have with your best friend, that friend that knows all of your secrets and your fears and could use that arsenal against you on a whim.

We've all been wronged.  We have all had trust compromised by someone we consider close.  It is the most miserable feeling you can have and it can scar you bad enough that it taints your decisions and skews your actions going forward.  It becomes such a fragile thing that it is only given again to someone that has proven themselves through noble deeds and steadfast integrity.

Here is where I find my first big contrast between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.  As an example lets take the NH primaries.  We all know the outcome.  We all know how shocked everyone paying attention was when the final tally was in.  Everything pointed to a sizable victory for Barack Obama.  Even Hillary Clinton's camp was so confident they would lose that they say she did not write a victory speech (if that was ad-lib though, it was pretty good). I'm not saying they did anything wrong or shady, but a funny thing happened to me when I heard those results, something that I have a pretty strong hunch was not unique to me.  That little voice inside said, "how did she do it, how did she bend the system?"  That's the little voice that follows the Clinton's.  Even though Bill Clinton will in effect be a factor in her Presidency, I won't even get into his strained relationship with the truth and trust, you can read all about it in the works of Kenneth Starr, I will stick with Hillary and the aura of her campaign.

If this voice chiming in was an isolated incident I could shoo it away like a pesky fly, but it's not.  I heard it when I saw that girl wink after asking a question at one of Hillary's events.  I heard it when she said her campaign is in no way complicit in this Nevada lawsuit brought by some of her backers, some of the very people that originally designed the plan, but they did it only after the coveted endorsement of the powerful Culinary Union went to her opponent.  This one actually is not just a voice, it has an accompanying odor and everybody over there is trying to stay straight faced so as not to raise suspicion that the odor came from them.  I heard that voice when she said Barack Obama was not always against the war and used snippets and innuendo out of context in a vain attempt to smear his credibility. I heard it when Bill said he was against the war from the beginning and she agreed.  I heard that voice when she said she made decision to get rid of Billy Shaheen even though he is the one who resigned.  I heard it when she said that Robert Johnson was talking about Obama's community service "in the neighborhood", and she agreed.  Let's just say I've heard that voice a lot and I don't think I'm alone.  I could go on and on, but I'll stop here.

Now we come to Barack Obama.  How do you feel about someone who's signature issue at the state and federal levels was ethics reform.  Ethics? In Washington?  Dare we dream? How do you feel about someone that had the most powerful political machine in America trying to dig up dirt and the best they could come up with were the unabashed ambitions of a five year old, or the openly admitted drug use of a conflicted teenager.  The best they could do is misrepresent his strategic "present" votes which were made with the blessings of his fellow Democrats in Illinois as part of a larger plan to achieve larger objectives.  The best they could do is claim he plays politics because he chose not to throw the 2004 Democratic nominee and his running mate under the bus for their misguided vote to go to war with Iraq, a misguided vote that I might add she was complicit in, but unlike them has not apologized for.  She claimed he was a liar because he says he doesn't play politics and was doing so in that case.  Unfortunately she forgot to listen to his rules of governing "not by polls, but by principle, not by calculation, but by conviction."  Principle and conviction told him not to shatter the Democratic party and take one for the team at potential personal cost. That's integrity.  That's character.  That breeds trust.

Personally, I like not hearing voices.  I like not having to dissect every word to find the truth myself.  I like knowing that a strong moral compass is the guide.  I like knowing ethics are the standard not the exception.  I like feeling trust.

How do these candidates stack up so far for you America?
Who are the defenders of the status quo ? Is that you ?
Reagan did spawn a 'sea change' in American politics.
Obama hopes to spawn a new 'sea change'. Change based on the ideals of unity - not division (and certainly not modeled after Reagan's ideas)
How can anyone look at the state of modern politics and the outlook for our country guided by our current stautus quo - how can this 'sea change' of unified working government not make sense.
Anyone who has paid any attention knows what Obama is speaking of about the Republican Party being guided by 'ideas' for the past 15 years... you don't have to subscribe to those ideas but they are, none the less, ideas. The same could be said of the Democratic party of the late 50's and into the 60's - Kennedy Idealism. Both of these movements ran their course and were watered down by time. That explains the state of the Democratic Party in the 70's and 80's. It also explains the 'washed out' state of the Republican Party today.
--- Why do 'we' resent being talked to as if we had the capacity for knowledge. That is how Barack Obama is speaking to America... as if 'we can' understand. Why would we sell ourselves short and believe that we are past our zenith... that we are a declining people. Come on people... Now is the time to show some strength of character.

Barack Obama for President of the UNITED States of America.
i think we have a man worse than George Bush. We cannot afford another 4 years. It strikes me that a man whom the press glorified as the Second Coming of Christ is now invoking Ronald Reagan who did so many wrong things against most people, especially unionized workers. It is shamenful for any union leadership to endorse or support this dangerous man at this defining moment of our time.

You can fool the people some time but not all the time.

Hillary will win and be our next President. I pray that God provides her with good people who will rule wisely and bring peace and properity first to americans and then the rest of the world. I also pray to God that she groom a good person to pass on the mantle to after 8 years.

We need to keep the world from Republican ideas and policies. They only provoke unrest and war all over the world and bring insecurity to this naton and the world.

i urge all Democrats to vote for Hillary and turn away from that fake Obama.
I heard Obama walked on water yesterday.
Add John Edwards to the list referring to Reagan:

We need a new path, one that will lead to reengagement with the world and restoration of the United States' moral authority in the community of nations. President Harry Truman once said, "No one nation alone can bring peace. Together, nations can build a strong defense against aggression and combine the energy of free men everywhere in building a better future for all." For 50 years, presidents from Truman and Dwight Eisenhower to Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton built strong alliances and deepened the world's respect for us. We gained that respect by viewing our military strength not as an end in itself but as a means to protect a system of laws and institutions that gave hope to billions across the globe. In avoiding the temptation to rule as an empire, we hastened the fall of a corrupt and evil one in the Soviet Union. The lesson is that we cannot only be warriors; we must be thinkers and leaders as well.

Millions of people imprisoned behind the Iron Curtain silently cheered the day President Reagan declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" ..., they looked to our president and saw a person -- and a nation -- they could trust.

Presidents Kennedy and Reagan talked with Soviet leaders at the height of the Cold War, in both cases turning back major threats to our national security. We need to do the same with Iranian and North Korean leaders.

Ronald Reagan is simply the latest in the long list of deceased presidents and others (JFK, MLK, and Abraham Lincoln among them) upon whose coattails Obama is attempting ride into the White House.

Ronald Reagan and JFK were so much more than "change agents," I'd find Obama's statement insulting if he weren't so naive.  Both Reagan and Kennedy were accomplished and experienced political leaders with specific policy agendas they'd developed over years of wrestling with public issues, Reagan as governor of California and JFK during his 14 years in Congress and, although Obama joins them in a list of gifted orators, both Reagan and JFK were both much, much more.

Obama, however, appears to be nothing but a slick salesman, an empty suit who apparently believes (not unlike the current occupant of the White House) that the duties of the presidency can be outsourced, and that, by continually drawing comparisons between himself and various great presidents of the past, the American people will be persuaded to ignore the man behind the curtain and focus instead on the great and powerful Wizard of Oz.

Thanks, but no thanks - I think I'll take a pass on the Obama Kool-Aid.
Okay, quick question:  Is Hillary going to apologize for this latest spin-laden, absurd attack on Obama sometime next week, or will she just fire her staff writer?

This is getting out of hand.  The  Hillary campaign is obviously scared of Obama.  You've got all of her surrogates digging dirt from the most absurd places,  Firing after apology after lie after equivocation, Bill frothing at the mouth at reporters, now this.

"The truth is right there in front of you, but they lay out this buffet of lies.  I'M SICK OF IT, AND I'M NOT GONNA TAKE A BITE OUT OF IT, YOU GOT ME?!?  Resistance is not futile.  We're gonna win this thing.  Human kind is too good.  We're not a bunch of underachievers.  We're gonna stand up and be HUMAN BEINGS!  We're gonna get FIRED UP about the real things, the things that MATTER!  Creativity and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit."
WATCH OUT  HILLARY S BLASTING PEOPLE  WONDER SHE HASNT BLASTED HUCKABEE OVER HIS BEASTILITY COMMENT.  YOU KNOW HE WAS TALKING ABOUT THE WHITE TRASY DEMS AND THEIR PETS.  THIS WILL MAKE BARBARA BOXER GET RID OF HER BOXER, AND IM SURE MISS SAN FRANCISCO, NANCY PELOSI WILL TRY TO MAKE IT LEGAL.
A US PRESIDENT NAME HUSSEIN BARACK OBAMA. THAT'S FOOLISH AND NONSENSE!!!!!!

Mrs Clinton is obviously the most qualified candidate in both parties.I'm  an American  I stay up late to watch the debates. So far she is the only candidate that demonstrated the qualites and experience that US needs during these turbulent times.

Obama may be brilliant , could make good C and C for the Future but ceratinly not ready for the 2008 White House.U S politics isn't about looking nice and talking sweet; it's about tough choices and decisions.Americans have to separate enthusiasm founded on wishes and dreams from pedigree, know-how, and a demonstrated capacity to deliver.

NOTICE MISS LES CALLED ON BARNEY FRANKS TO COMMENT ON RONALD REGAN  WHAT ARE THEY PROTESTING   THE RIGHT FOR GAY MARRIAGE-----WELL SORRY DEMS NO BABY KILLING, NO GAY MARRIAGE, AND AS HUCKABEE SAYS NO BEASTILITY, SO GET RID OF YOUR DOGS OR YOU COULD GO TO JAIL FOR CRUELTY TO AN ANIMAL.   HOOOO   RAYYYYYYYYYYY   DEMS  LMAO
WHAT DOES BARNEY FRANKS------ A GAY REP  KNOW  ABOUT REGAN.  tHATS THE ONLY ONE CLINTON CAN GET TO RUN REGAN DOWN--------GET A LIFE DEMS AND GET OFF WELFARE
Hillary is right - why vote for a Republican in disguise when you can vote for the real thing? Hussein Obama is not trustworthy, he will do ANYTHING to get elected, but he has no ideas. Just empthy rhetoric and a Republican in disguise. Hussein Obama is divisive and calculated. Remember how many people never in a million years would vote for him.

Hussein Obama is Old School -

Clinton is Cool!

Hillary for President
The Clinton's were scum bags then & they're scum bags still.
They called Barney Franks he had his problems in office    like bill
If you put Obama in the seat that showed us he dumb as a rock, what is his record,
Go Hillary
That is the way Chuck Todd does it!!
Print what Hillary says when she twist the statements around to make her self sound intellingent.
Mr. Todd should quit MSNBC and go to work full time assisting Hillary and Slick Willy to spread their venom, well I guess he has a use for his job,!!
Spreading the venom "PREJUDICE" when attacking Sen. Obama in his so called column!!!!
Mr. Todd try being more fair minded like John Harwood !!!!
Let's see, What will the country look like in the next 25 years? Well if Hillbillary is elected and is in there 8 years, we will have Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton, all since 1992. So if you want Hillbillary and want to know what the next 25 years will look like just look Back!
Typical Clinton's want everything both ways.  One minute she has Bush I and Reagan on her list of favorite Presidents and next she is attacking Obama for a statement he made regarding Reagan.  Same old Same old stuff!   One minute she tells us she can work with the Republicans and the next she is telling us they are the party of bad ideas.   Huh?   How is that bringing people together.  Bill and Hillary - GROAN.
Barack Obama clarified his remakrs while talking to journalists at the Mirage casino:
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/01/19/obama_rallies_casino_workers_b.html
"It was a factual statement that Ronald Reagan created a working majority for his agenda. Not my agenda, but his. We're getting accustomed to this. But hopefully the American people, because of excellent reporting by you, are able to sort out what's true and what's not."
I would vote for Collin Powell, in a heartbeat, for president, but not Obama! WE think Hillary should try and get Powell on the ticket with her...HIllARY/POWELL even if he bats for the other team.
Bottom line OBAMA just isn't our Man
Hillary is just repeating what she heard - obviously she needs to earn how to listen.  If she had listened she may have not voted for the Ira_ (fill in the blank)war.

AND

She is just twisting the truth to get votes from gullible people.

Personaly, I want a president who listens accuratly and does not lie.

Obama!
