Michelle Obama booed over 'Nevada'

Posted: Friday, January 18, 2008 5:32 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
It's not just Brian Williams who's getting in trouble for mispronouncing Nevada.

Michelle Obama at a town hall in Reno today got booed loudly for saying, Nah-VAH–da rather than the more nasally, neh-VAAD-ah.

We're so happy to be back in Nevada," Michelle began before being drowned out by a loud chorus of "Booos!" from the large crowd.

Catching her mistake she shouted into the microphone, "NEVADA NEVADA NEVADA!!!!"

"Neh-VAAD-dah!!! Neh-VAAD-ah!" she continued to scream out to loud laughter.

"I've been in South Carolina too long," she joked.

Before throwing in another, It's nice to be here NEVADA! NEVADA NEVADA NEVADA!!!!"

But she was quick on her feet later on in her speech, when she tied her mispronunciation into her message on economic opportunity. "Trust me whether I can say Nevada right or not I am still  a regular kid. I view myself as a kid who grew up on the sout side of Chicago. I was not supposed to be here," she told the crowd.

I'm sure that'll cost Barack vote's. NOT!!!

Just seen McCain in SC say he was never for amnesty & Never for Social Security for Veteran's!!!! To Think the GOP is actually considering his feeble mind for President.

Will the Dumbing down of America ever cease?

Not until the McCains & the Clinton's are off the campaign trail.
Seriously....Is this all you have to report....The news is so ridiculous....I can even stomach watching any of it....Because you create and exaggerat it as you go along....

We are tired of trusting the same people who have been a great part of the problems we are having in this country to fix those same problems they helped to creat in woshington.

If you helped in starting this war in Iraq through your vote in woshington, you were wrong when it counted the most. That is your expirience. If you have been part of the fights that divided this country and woshington and helped deny the people well intended bills like good health care for everyone, you were wrong when it counted the most. That is your expirience. If you have more favours to give to special interests and lobbyists in woshington because they are fighting for you in this campaign; you are wrong when it counts the most. That is your expirience. If you believe in the bush foreign policy of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, you are wrong when it counts the most. That is your expirience. If you are scared to say or do the right thing even when it's unpopular, as a leader, you are wrong.

Expirience is like a real view mirror and while it shows us where you have been, it can't and shouldn't be used to tell us where we are going without good judgement; we can't look back to the future if we have to go forward to the future. We need a new leader with the right judgement, and the right expirience; a leader who will inspire us to unite for a common cause; who will do the right things when they count the most rather than do the wrong things and look for a chance to fix everything later. We have seen the cost of a broken system in blood, and poverty and in many other ways that we can't and shouldn't be scared of a new day. A better day. We need to know that Yes. we. can. If we have the courage to change. Obama 08.

In the meantime, if you're tired of politics as usually, come visit www.barackobama.com. He's got new plans listed for the economy and the war in Iraq. Come take a look and see if you'd like to be a part of the people's MOVEMENT for change!
First Read "WHAT"

Seriously, are you truly an American...? You would rather sacrifice the Soul of this Country just to spread your ridiculous hatred of Senator Obam.  You would rather see this country destroyed not because you don't believe in the things that Senator Barack Obama is saying but because it is Senator Barack Obama who is saying it.

They are many Rich Politician who want to scare you with WAR.... They want you to be preoccupy because they want you to make same mistake a 3rd time....And if you do, mark my words, you think you are struggling now, it will become far worst than anything you can ever imagine.

Look at your politician.... Have you ever wondered how much they are worth financially.... I believe Senator Obama is probably the poorest of the group. He had every opportunity to make millions but it was his choice to stay and fight for the middle class and the poor.

And let me tell you if you elect Senator Clinton.... She will not look out for you she will only it make it worst for you.... She will take this Country deeper into a hole And then turn around and blame it on George Bush Administration's past mistakes....She voted for the war but blamed George Bush for it's failures... when his failures could not exist without her support.

And then soon you will one day come face to face with your deepest fear, the true meaning of poverty.... It will not just touch one of us it will touch all of us....And then your chance is lost.....Senator Obama will be only that, Senator Obama...You won't  have the opportunity for 4 more years to repair the mistake you've made. We are at war but it's not with the world.....It is the Middle Class and the Poor against the Richest of the Rich.  So I say, Republicans, Democrats and Independent who fits in the category of the less fortunate, make a choice, and think very hard at the choices you make because once you make it can not be undone...

Subtract yourselves from the propaganda....And ask the questions

How does your savings account look (many saving accounts no longer exists because many are living pay check to pay check)
Has the amount you pay for in gas taken away the type of food you buy (many are getting real familiar with TOP RAMEN)
How about the cost of housing (Now I don't own a home but come this January my rent will be rising to the cost of what a mortgage would be)
How about your health Insurance.... Well my employer just eliminated vision from our Healthcare Plan..... But they did give us the choice of purchasing it separately......Along with eliminating our vision they also increased the amount of premium we must pay for health care to and extra $50.00 making my monthly cost in Health Insurance balloon to $350 a month....
How about the price of Groceries (Well That  has me struggling also)
Will you have money to send your children to college?
And with every cost of living on the rise the one thing that is excluded is how much we are bringing home from work.  What we make to survive on is at stand still, while everything we need to survice it rising at impossible prices to pay for.
And I pretty sure that they are many many more questions that could be added on to this list
(The Richest of the Rich will have no problem answering any of the questions I have listed above with the highest of dignity.... Why many Americans are left to suffer)
So, Once again I say to subtract yourselves from the propaganda.....And ask the true hard to come to terms with questions......

She was NOT booed loudly.  Watch the video.  It was mostly laughter then applause.  Why do you guys have to exaggerate everything?
Well, that does it, I'm voting for a Republican. I had no idea that the Obama campaign was so lacking in, um, the, um, colloquial use of long versus short vowels.
I don't think Michelle has much to worry about. She will not be first lady. The democrats are destroying their chances to make it to the whitehouse with all the novel and unique ways they are destroying each other.Whatever republican that wins their parties nomination will be elected----all they have to do is repeat all the nasty remarks the voters have thrown at the democrats.(the democratic voters)
I know this was a stupid story but Obamites are the first to complain Bill gets too much press. Here you go. Run with it.
The Las Vegas Sun
“After the Sun worked the story for two hours, this much is clear: What exactly happened this afternoon at Paris Las Vegas depends on whom you talk to. To hear Clinton’s campaign and her supporters tell it, the union intimidated a member into caucusing for Obama, demanding that she sign a pledge card or face exile from the caucus.

“To hear the alleged victim tell it, it was much more of a misunderstanding.”

After speaking with several Culinary members — at the suggestion of the Clinton campaign — the Sun cannot substantiate widespread voter intimidation on the part union organizers. What is clear, however, is that Culinary organizers are pushing Obama hard in the run-up to Saturday’s Caucus.

It’s also clear that some members in some cases have felt intimidated by the pushy approach of some organizers. According to labor experts, a vigorous back-and-forth is the norm in these types of situations — and the tactics don’t cross the legal line unless workers are overtly threatened.

None of the Culinary members interviewed by the Sun claim to have been threatened.

Worst case scenario: Organizers are telling members they must caucus for Obama — or they can’t caucus. While experts say that’s unethical, it also is an outlier in the cases examined by the Sun.

Most of the members interviewed by the Sun say they are Clinton supporters who have taken issue with either the Culinary’s endorsement of Obama or the endorsement in general.

The situation is not as black and white as liberal blogger Taylor Marsh says it is. Marsh did not respond to an e-mail seeking an interview. Here are some questions the Sun sought to ask her.

1) Marsh did not identify the eyewitness to the Paris incident as a Clinton supporter. Why not?

2) Marsh did not include any interview with the actual alleged victim, Sylvia Antuna. Why not? In an interview with the Sun, Antuna said the incident may have been more misunderstanding than intimidation.

3) Did Marsh attempt to reach the Culinary Union to get its response to the allegation? If not, why not?

4) Last year, Marsh accepted money from the Association of Federal, State, City and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), to blog at a Democratic event. AFSCME has endorsed Clinton and is a longtime ally of the Clinton family. Has Marsh taken payment from AFSCME recently? If so, how much?
This is news?
Hillary talks from both ends of her mouth.  Guess who is on her list of FAVORITE PRESIDENTS??

I am on my knees praying for an Obama win. I know there is a God. Pleas show us your power. Allow Obama to win in Nevada, then South Carolina and the remainder of the contest. The Democratic primary has taken on the staged and manipulated aura of a reality show. Just when you think it can't get any more tasteless or asinine, it does.I am SICK of the networks'"coverage". There ARE more than three candidates. It would be nice to hear something about ALL of them.
I just think we should elect a President who can say Nuclear right.
i get it! if you were born yesterday,  you have NO experience........ and that makes you electable!
This is so SILLY!!!!!  You headline clearly indicates something that did not happen as the headline suggests.  This is why you guys are in so much trouble now.  Stop it or risk losing your already diminishing audience forever.  Thank God I have a mind!
Hey Chuckie here you go again with your predjudice columns again!!
Why can't you come up with something news worthy instead of Michell Obama getting booed over saying Nevada in-correct !!!
You sir are so predictable when it comes to Sen. Obama, wish you would go where you belong, with Slick Willy Clinton and venomous Hillary !!
You would fit right in with the Obama hate club !!!!
Chuck Todd should be charged for using MSNBC for Hillar's campaign manager !!!!
I am so proud of Barack and Michelle. They have kept their cool and stayed positive in spite of the vicious and ugly machinations of the Clinton machine.

Obama's reward is the ongoing announcements from elected officials. Check it out from elected Latino leaders in Los Angeles:

Yes We Can!!

Yes We Can!!

Chris, He doesn't really have a "plan" it's a vision, as he said at the last debate.  He cannot be bothered with details, but he would be the "decider" who does this remind you of???
I love this woman - I caught her speech in Grinell, Iowa before the caucuses, and boy....these guys are lucky she's not running! She's articulate, intelligent, inspiring, down to earth, and such an amazing role model. I sure hope my daughter gets to see her as the next First Lady!
Wow!! Scandal!!! Intrigue!! I'm soooo glad we have such credible journalists who expose the truth of these so-called "candidates" who lack the leadership to pronounce "NAAAAA-VAAAAAAAD-AHHHHHHH". Now, he'll lose the election and WWIII will be overted. THANK YOU!

Murrow is smiling down on you from journalist heaven, my friends.

Seriously, who's the dolt who thought this was worth wasting bandwidth on?!?

To all you Obama enthusiasts: just why should we believe that someone who has not yet had the chance to prove himself can work all these "change" miracles, just because you have "hope." It takes knowledge and experience, not hope and great speaking skills. Jimmy Carter showed us what a truly good man who had great intentions can do - absolutely nothing but embarrass the country.

The best people in the country haven't been able to change it but a neophyte can? Give me a break.
WTF WTFing news man. Give me a break. Report on something that makes some sense. ...
No one likes Obama or Michelle obama in nevada! This is hispanic territory and hispanics do not like blacks.
Been in SC too long, huh? We will see about that next Saturday! She can go to Illinios for all we care in the Palmetto State. Why in the world we would want to nominate a candidate that will lose to the Repukes in every single poll out there in places like Ohio and Fla where we have had our clock cleaned the last two Presidential elections is beyond all comprension. Are you Dummycrats that stupid? Wake up and quit drinkngi the koolaid, the only thing you Omama cultist keep saying is HE inspires me, or he gives me hope, get real people, is it worth rolling the dice Vegas? John Edwards is the only candidate in the race that cvan beat any of the Publican tax collectors running. Think before we find ourselves losing three in a row and vote for Edwards!
Aswini, you ignorant slut!  Why can't you use the International Phonetic Alphabet like everyone else?
I am nothing if not honored, to be included among all you intellectual types. Now, about what happened yesterday in Nevada. I DISAGREE! speaking for myself, I would'nt call how she said what she said, a "faux pas". Let's face it- it's not as if it was "faute de mieux". She had only one choice. The handful of people
in that town hall on that day in Rino, may have shown
disapproval but in all of my 50 years, for as long as I can recall,I've heard a great many people here in America from all walks of life- because they speak standard American English- pronounce {the proper name; grm.} "Nevada", the very same way she said it yesterday. It was thoroughly and completely forgivable. No fault in it whatsover. A Totally innocent drift, and then ofcourse she relented to a completely gratified audience. Go watch the video, you'll see what I mean.
In the same context, the worst example of shameless disregard ladies and gentlemen, is holding the office of President of the United States for a full-blown 8 years (8, mind you and possibly even more), and when addressing hundreds of millions of intelligent men and women,
continually and slovenly mispronouncing "nuclear".
Please, when you go to vote, and I certainly will do so myself, don't base your decision on how Mrs. Michelle Obama pronounced or mispronounced the name
"Nevada".
California, Montana, Florida, New Mexico, Nevada, Texas, Colorado - Spanish origin - English pronunciation

Very few who have lived for a significant time west of Kansas ever had a problem pronouncing Nevada correctly: neh-VA-duh ("A" as in cat)

This is mostly east coast arrogance and southern ignorance.  The east coast media is proud that they can pronounce Kazakhstan but won't take 20 seconds to learn how to properly pronounce Nevada, Colorado, and Oregon.

IMO, the country bumpkin who pronounces Illinois as "Illi-noise" is no worse than the equivalent east coast or Texas "educated" media bumpkin who mispronounces Nevada.

In fact, I give the country bumpkin a bit more credit because once informed of his error, unlike some east coast folks I have encountered, he is unlikely to have the chutzpah to tell a native Nevadan or Coloradan how they "should" pronounce their own states.
