Did Obama win more delegates?

Posted: Saturday, January 19, 2008 7:23 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
The Obama campaign just held a conference call with reporters asserting that -- due to Obama beating Clinton outside of Clark County (Las Vegas) -- they actually won more pledged Nevada delegates than Clinton did, 13-12.

The math turns out to be a bit confusing, but the shorthand is this: The more populous Clark County, which Clinton won, awarded a even number of delegates, and Clinton and Obama split those down the middle. Meanwhile, the more rural areas, which Obama won, awarded an odd number of delegates, which gave Obama the edge. "We showed real strength statewide," campaign manager David Plouffe said in the call.

But the AP -- as well as NBC News --  had reported that the delegate split being Clinton 13, Obama 12. Who is wrong here? Per the Obama camp, the state party is still gathering results, and they believe the AP has incomplete numbers.

In the Q&A, a reporter asked, so does this mean you won Nevada? Plouffe replied, "We'll leave that up to you guys."

And now NBC News shows a change in delegates from our earlier count: It's Obama 13, Clinton 12.

*** Update *** AP now also shows that Obama won the delegate count.

The republicans are wanting HUSSAIN TO WIN because they know he will not win.
Here's hoping that people will start seeing the Hill/bill campaign for what it is...Same old, Same old.

Obama in '08
Hello from deep in the heart of as a republican ready to vote for real change...Dems get out and make OBAMA your candidate and I switch for the first time in a very very long time. Put Hiltery up and I stay republican.
Congratulations to Obama.  I am sad that Hilary has pulled him into the fray of her negative campaigning and old-school low-ball tactics to the point that he has no choice but to defend himself.  I only hope that Americans can see through this.  For shame, Clintons.  You can see on her face nothing but smugness and Obama seems a little bit more wearied.  For a man that has faith in this country's people, one can understand why this is a very trying time.  I believe that right will triumph.  Keep going Obama.  We're with you  Hilary is so power hungry I CAN'T staand the wench.
Well well, what can I say?  Interesting!  Obama?  Hillary?  Hum.  The final straw is on Feb 5th.  Super Tuesday.  I do believe Hillary will come out on top.  Assertive and determined.  That is what we need.  Obama needs some more time to learn the ways of politics, then he will possibly make a great president someday.  Unfortunate that all people can mention is what religion one is, what race they are, and or what sex they are.  Sad even further is that more people don't vote.  The rudeness that comes from elections amoung those that call themselves "informed" defeats the purpose of discussion and is overly demeaning.  February 5th will decide, hands down.
Well I was part of the Caucus in Nevada. I will just say this on the sheet I placed my name out of 10- 12 spots Obama had 7 Hill 3 the other 2 or 3 votes were a couple of other people Edwards had 1. This was in a Hillary sponsored poll place...
As I live in Florida, I will weigh in here, the only place my opinion apparently matters. 2000 was an excellent indicator of how a close race can be offset by a difference between the popular vote and the electorate or in this case delegates. How disappointing to live in a state mired in controversy and now, deemed irrelevant by both the Democratic Party and the candidates. I feel as if I don't even live in America. It's sad when a state that has 114 delegates is less relevant than one that has say 25. I guess I can thank Katherine Harris for starting the trend. Will we never get past the hanging chads? In Florida, one thing and one thing only is certain...for what it's worth, the popular vote is the only thing that counts here.
You all sound really intelligent, especially Outspoken Hillary fan and Julie. Do you really think that you can persuade others to vote for Hillary by being negative and chastising another candidate that people support? But hey, I guess you learned from the best right?
Yet again, the Media gets it wrong.  Who won?  Obama got more delegates, so HE did.  I'm making the call right now, so you don't have to mess it up later.  It's going to be Obama/Richardson on one ticket and McCain/Huckabee on the other.  Either way, America wins and we get back on track.

Mitt has a great career ahead of him as the Chairman of GM, and Rudy can take over at Homeland Security, or run for Hillary's Senate seat.

Now, how about you go and do your job, and report the substantive differences between these fellows on 1. The Economy, 2. Immigration, 3. Taxes, and which one of these fellows has a chance of getting their program through a bitterly divided Congress?  Do your damn job and ANALYZE the positions and the FACTS.  Now, shut up and get back to work.  You've got ALOT of catching up to do................
It shows how truely brain-washed the Clinton sheep are. One person states Obama is a Muslim and they all follow.  Try a different attack, you may appear to be slightly more intellegent if you do. Better yet keep it up.
It's funny how the interpretations change from day to day depending on who spins the results...it was all about delegates when Billary "won" New Hampshire, now they are saying that the delegates don't matter.  Obama is and has always been ahead in terms of delegates.  Wake up people!  Smearing him won't stop the momentum...it is time for change, time for the truth, time for America to become a great nation that takes care of ALL of its citizens.  Obama 08!!!!
Jane, number one, this is not a "Christian" nation; number two, Obama is not a Muslim; three, learn to spell.  Of course, a comment like yours would come from the south; sometimes I think the biggest mistake this country ever made was in 1861, when we passed up a chance to say Good riddance
The NY Times Reports:
“I don’t know why they’re saying that,” said Jill Derby, president of the Nevada State Democratic Party, referring to the Obama campaign. “We don’t select our national delegates the way they’re saying. We won’t select national delegates for a few more months.”

I was leaning towards Mr. Obama, but unfortunately he seems to have loose lips lately:  he says he is not a good manager (why the hell would he admit that--it's a job interview after all and everyone knows you don't admit that on a job interview), he says positive things about Reagan and not such nice things about Bill Clinton (I am a Democrat and I don't want to hear that from one of my own) and now he claims a delegate victory when the head of the state Democratic party says that is not the way they choose the delegates!

Now I see what Hillary means. She has lots of flaws, but Obama's recent slip-ups make me a bit nervous about whether he could be president without making more slip-ups
Tom -- you're wrong.  Clinton leads by about 8% nationally.

http://www.pollster.com/08-US-Dem-Pres-Primary.php

That will change a lot between now and Super Tuesday....
This is just like the Electoral College system. They don't "officially" choose the electors for several months after the election, but it almost always "tracks" with the November totals. So Obama is the winner here because he got more delegates (electoral votes) vs. caucus votes (popular vote). It is a mere formality that occurs in April.
OH, now they talk about the delegates, since Obama lost in Nevada..this is the first time, as far as I've seen, that they have been mentioned..guess why!!

HILLARY HAS BEEN WINNING NATIONALLY FROM DAY ONE..
Facts are facts..now you have them

excuse you people but can i say something? what is wrong with being muslim? everyone is saying either Obama is muslim or is not in such a racist way. by the way he is not muslim, for all you dumbos like jane who dont know.
I wish the Democrats supporting Clinton would think again and look closely at the results from the past three contests. If Clinton is the nominee, the most Democrats can hope for is a narrow blue state victory in November. Obama, on the other hand, would win in a landslide because of his ability to bring new groups of voters - independents, younger voters, and some Republicans who are fed up with Bush.
Jane in Tennesse,
For goodness sake, pick up a book or a newspaper once in awhile. Obama is Christian, has always been Christian, and will always be Christian. Are you really so ignorant that you would confuseSenator Obama (who is Christian) with Representative Ellison (who actually is Muslim)from Minnesota?
Al Gore said he will endorse one of the Presidential candidates and it is widely known that he does not like Hillary Rodham Clinton. Most likely he will make his endorsement after the Democratic South Carolina Primary and before the Super Tuesday Contests. Since Barack Hussein Obama is doing very well and since John Edwards is doing very poorly (except for Iowa), I suspect his endorsement will be for Barack Obama. A lot of Al Gore fans will then vote for Barack Obama instead of Hillary Clinton, especially if Al Gore campaigns alongside Barack. That will then tip the scales in favor of Barack Obama, especially if many Al Gore fans think that Al Gore might be chosen as Barack's vice-Presidential running mate.
Margaret --> you're wrong w.r.t. Clinton "winning."  We're talking about delegates awarded due to votes, not to politicians (superdelegates).

It is actually true that Clinton has the advantage among superdelegates --> delegates (who are essentially governors and the like) who choose independent of the voting (which happened before this election even started).  They tend not to matter towards convention time, however.  It'd be interesting (and a shame) if they tossed it to Hillary...
The splitting of delegates if it proves true is good news.  I have spent more energy and time trying to understand this democratic nomination process (and the candidates) than any other election I've participated in before (I'm almost 50).  I have been very surprised at how Senator Clinton and her organization has gotten away with so much twisting of facts and positions this past couple weeks and how the electorate seems to put up with it.  I voted for President Clinton twice as the then best offering available.  But I just can't understand how people now don't see how deep the handed style is in her and her organization's attacks on Barack Obama.  Is this what America really wants in a President?
I'm still confused on how Hillery has 35 yrs of experience in politics.  As for that outspoken Hillery fan.  How do you exspect her to change this country when she can't even accept defeat without crying on National Televsion?  Thats all we need is our leader crying in front of Foreign Leaders.
Even when Hillary wins, she can't win.  Maybe if she cries the media will just go ahead and let her think she won.

Obama 13
Clinton 12
SCOREBOARD!

And to those using superdelegates as an argument,  one counter-argument to consider.  Do politicians ever change their minds or weasel into a new position?
Margaret, with all due respect, the Super Delegates which you have thrown into your mix are not committed. They can - and very often do - switch alliances as the election year moves forward. If you add up the delegates won by each in these contests, Obama and Hillary are tied - or possibly Obama is one ahead.
Hillery won the votes so she won  if not then what good dose it do to vote if they dont count anyway  i dont understand  makes me wonder if i should vote or not
How can people vote for a person who can't even vote on behalf of his owm state?
Barack Obama for President of the UNITED States of America !
Dean, you must have been very young in 1992. Bill is a tough politician. As a political fighter is almost a republican - he hits back. Obama dreams of being Reagan and wins like Bush. Funny! But all the delegate talk is pointless. Hillary will smack Obama in the Florida and then North East and California. Its over for Obama. He is our next Vice-President.
Not only have the CLINTONS shown exhibited bad behavior, they are serious COPY CATS.  First OBAMA came out with his theme for CHANGE - then she claimed she was the CANDIDATE for change.  OBAMA created the YES WE CAN phrase at his rallies and now she does it.  OBAMA was easily accessible to regular folk to speak with as he shook hands and talked with citizens when HILLARY was stand offish - and now she and her husband are doing it.   SHE Attacked him first using the unfactual description of MARTIN LUTHER KING not being able to implement the civil rights act without a president --- then she claimed she was MARTIN's DREAM.  Her husband's running around acting like a madman --- on tv.  They are mean spirited and vicious.  At first I was going to support HILLARY if BARAK lost -- but now I will vote INDEPENDENT or NOT AT ALL -- because I am disallusioned.  THE LATION vote in VEGAS is ridulous - they have rode on the coat tails of our CIVIL RIGHTS movement since they came here - but yet and still always vote republican or for any thing that's not brown or black.  It's disgusting.   It's pretty suspicious that the only polling that was inaccurate in NEW HAMPSHIRE was the CLINTON OBAMA POLLS... there is a devil in all of these details.
Superdelegates are not locked in to any candidate. They do not feel the same pressure normal delegates do and have the option of switching last minute if it suits them. And they usually will if their seat at the convention is in jeopardy for choosing the wrong candidate. That's why you don't hear too much from Superdelegates until usually after Super Tuesday. It was Hillary's Superdelegates that were being called after Iowa to reassure them and make sure they weren't thinking of switching.

And I have to know...Do Hillary supporters really think we're all gonna just rally around Hill IF she gets the nomination? It really is something you should start thinking about. It may not be Hillary's fault in general, but that is the way it is. Now if all you're trying to do is say a woman can win the Dem. nomination....fine. But even you have to realize that she will not unite our party, let alone the country afterwards. Ladies...you might not like to believe it, but it's true.
Nicole, your right about Jane not believing every media thing she hears but how do you know that the CLINTONS made the DUPIOUS claim?  Now your putting out media claim that may or may not be true yourself while trying to support your particular candidate.  See how easy it is to start the chain of events!

Jenny, and so what if Obama was a muslim.  Does that mean this country couldn't vote for him.  I don't know the exact figure but there are quite a few NON-CHRISTAIN people living in the US.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that you wouldn't be supporting him if he was a MUSLIM.

In my opinion, that's what is wrong with our great nation. We were founded on diversity of religion and politics; yet those things are what we constantly do battle over among ourselves today.

Fortunately, our founding fathers were smart enough to comprimise in order to make things work for the good of the whole.  Unfortunately, our society today is condusive to make slanderous and malicious attacks at our adversaries in order to prove our points. IE: Hussein Obama, Billary, Hill/Bill, etc.

thank you adam, i hadnt realized the difference was 8%. i stand corrected. but i still stand by the rest of my statement =], im excited, as this is my first presidential election i will be old enough to actually vote in, and im loving every minute of it.
I was wondering when was the last time a Independent has won the Presidential election?  Because if Hillery gets the nomination with her fake tears and whining, there would be a good chance of it.  If you think about it we would'nt have much of a choice.  Either a Morman or a cry baby.  Nothing against Romney or Huckebee  but relegion has no business in politics.
Jane and all those people who think like her, using the verbiage that Obama is a Moslem. Forst and last, alpha and omega, Obama is not a Muslim.

Second, Jesus Christ did not have blonde hair and blue eyes.

Three, this country -- the USA -- is supposed to be diverse. And Jane from Tenessee do not sound diverse. Very prejudiced. People like Jane were the reasons behind the civil rights movement and the assassination of MLK.

There are Muslims in this country. There are people from many religions too. Unfortunately there are people like Jane who think with a brain of the tenth century BC when there was no USA of course.

When you have people who think like Jane you will get the same karma kick back. With people like Jane who hate Muslims do you it is a surprise that Americans are hated in other parts of the world from especially the places where the oil which everybody uses in their cars when they drive in America somes from. You hate Muslims they will hate you back. Whatever you carry inside comes back at mudslings dirt into your face.

That is why Muslims have Americans. Because a few Americans have prejudice and hate in their heart bigger than the Himalayas.

What you sow is what you reap. Jane and company are the reason God is punishing Americans with terrorism.

Obama is the savior for America. He will unite this country, bring the respect that has been lacking.

Jane and company should repent, read the Bible more deeply and think about the prayer which is called "OUR LORD'S PRAYER.."

So many so called Christians are prejudiced and God will punish them. The day of judgment is near.

I love my brother in Christ Barack Hussein Obama. He is the gem that will turn this country around like Moses led the Israelites from Egypt.

May God lead you and bless you my brother in Christ, Barack Hussein Obama.
To jane and all of the clinton supporters all of  you are fools, and thats real 75% of the american people knows if she is the democratic choice the replublicans will win AGIAN... obama is the only one who can save america and the hell its  in right now TRUST ME ON THAT...
Obama wins Democratic nomination = 4 more years of Republican rule.

Clinton or Edwards = a fighting chance.

Wake up - Obama is a divider, not a uniter.
Joseph has it right.  Independents determine who WINS the white House.

This delegate count issue is informative as it relates to the general.

In 2004, Nevada was considered a swing state. It was won by President Bush by a margin of 2.6%.  A mere 21,000 votes out of more than 537,000.

Clark County, home of Las Vegas and the most populous county of the state, went for John Kerry.  But Kerry lost the state.

Clinton won the caucus exactly how Kerry lost the state in the general election: winning the biggest (de facto Democrat) county but losing statewide.

If Kerry had taken any of the three next-largest counties, the DEMs would have won Nevada in 2004.

So how did Hillary do in these 3 counties Kerry lost?

Washoe:  Obama 50%, Clinton 41%, Edwards 9%
Douglas:  Obama 50%, Clinton 43%, Edwards 8%
Elko:        Obama 63%, Clinton 31%, Edwards 6%

Obama won all 3 comfortably.

Hillary has the Kerry formula, win the biggest city/county lose the state in the general.

Obama would win Las Vegas in the general because that’s where the democrats are. But Obama’s strength in the next 3 largest counties shows he has the best chance to win Nevada in  a general election.

Hillary would not win the state.  Her performance would likely be just like Kerry’s and just like this election today..  This is the sad fact that will play out across the nation in my opinion.  States like Missouri, Florida, Colorodo, Nevada, and Ohio all remain in peril in the general with Clinton.  All these stes have the big county versus statewide effect and are closely split DEM/REP.

In these states you’ll need to get votes where Obama is getting them and Clinton is not.  And if Hillary alienates the Black vote, (which she has already done so far) the DEMS could actually go backwards compared to Kerry in a general election.   States barely won by Kerry like Wisconsin (Milwaukee) , and Pennylvania (Philly) might even fall if the Black vote is not enthusiastic for Clinton.

I believe Obama could win a general election.  I doubt Clinton can.  But can Obama win the nomination…not with the numbers he’s getting from unions, women and Hispanics.  Her combination of women, unions and hispanics will get her the most delagates and the nomination.  His chance is if Edwards cedes his MEN to Obama else it’s Hillary.  And I’ll hope Hillary/Obama if she wants to win the general.
GO OBAMA!

Way to go. Not a bad showing for someone having a past president being used as the attack dog.

I'm so sick of the Billary machine, enough already! Bill Clinton needs to mind his own business, he is not a running candidate. This is going to work to help Obama....and I'm glad:)

Obama still ahead in delegates!

Stay positive. Change is never easy, but it's necessary.

GO OBAMA GO!
I doubt very much that we will win against the Republicans in Nov, because I think Bill and Hill are doing their usual "anything goes politics".

What will happen is by the time dems are over with their primaries there will be so much disunity that they will go into the election like a wounded lion.

I caucus for Hillary but now I know she is not having my vote in November and that is because I think anyone that will do anything to get elected will do anything to stay in power.
Let's get something striaght here and now. Barack Obama took his oath on the Koran and not the Holy Bible, therefore it stands to anyone with any kind of common sense that he is indead muslim.
Second. He refused to say the pledge of allegance to a country that he is now trying to get to run. COME ON FOLKS, THINK.
I don't care what church he goes to, to keep face and I don't care what airs he puts on.
His actions speak loud and clear what his plans are for this countries future and it scares the hell out of me.
Dear Jane,

You are mistaken on several counts.

Muslin is a plain-woven cotton fabric.
A Muslim is a person who practices the Islamic faith.

Senator Barack Obama is neither.  He is a practicing Christian.  Barack Obama has been a Member of Trinity United Church of Christ for 20 years.

Finally, many patriotic Americans are Muslims.  Your blanket mistrust of believers in Islam is misguided.
Despite the fact Hillary won the caucus, this is really a big deal for Obama, considering he was behing by 25% just a month ago. And now, he has apararently came close enough to split the very improtant delegate votes. And because he did very well through out the entire state, he has picked up an extra delegate, compared to Hillary's Las Vegas only win... I think evryone knew Obama was going to loose, so the he pretty much won the expectation game... Hillary and Bill tried to lower expectations, with the lawsuit ordeal, for themselves to make her win more momentus, but I don't think it will play out that way.

Obama is the true winner in NV because he had more state wide appeal compared to Hillary's Las Vegas Strip victory...
I don't understand why anyone would vote for Hillary Clinton.  She cannot possibly win a general election.  She is the most divisive figure in Washington and Republicans would come out in droves just to vote against her.  Any vote for Clinton in the primaries is a vote for McCain or Giuliani in the general election.
Since everyone is concerned about the delegate situation, let me remind you that it takes a little over 2000 votes to get the nomination. We are a long way from that. And to Barbie in Illinois well done.
Remember when Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race a few years ago because when in Law School he plagiarised a paper (for those who do not know what plagiarism is is stealing from somebody's invention or idea without giving them credit)?

Hilary Clinton is so dumb that she is stealing phrases from Barack Obama. Barack was the first who came with the phrase "CHANGE". Then every candidate including the sinking Guilliani, Edwards and Hilary herself made posters and billiards reading CHANGE.

Now Barack came out with a new phrase "YES WE CAN" and then the chief copy lady unoriginal Hilary is using that phrase.

How is a person if not original and creative fit to lead a country which has so many talented people? It will be like living in a third world country where the leaders are not creative original or even educated enough to be original. That is Hilary.

My friends, is she gets the democratic nomination, the Democrats will never win the white house. Never. Then the Republicans will lead trump and turn America
into a garbage bag for another 8 years before the USA gets out of this coma.

Hilary does not have the originality, the creativity, the imagination to lead this country. Why can't she come out with her own phrases? Because she is not smart. She shed tears like rain in New Hampshire. Imagine her being president and she hears that 100 Americans are held hostage in the little country of Sicily..She will shed tears at 3 am. Will she shed tears when Iran send nuclear bombs to Baghdad? Informed sources tell me she will shed tears.

Then this country is on the verge of going to the pits, to the dungholes. Remember what happened to the Roman and British empires. The end of an empire is within her own people. If Hilary gets the Democratic nomination, Republicans will rule again and there will be more Jerry Falwells.

Does this stem from the way American schools run and teach their students? Mostly yes.

She is another Joe Biden. Obama is as creative as it gets. I bet you if Martin Luther King was running for President and Hilary happened to be her rival and he comes up with the phrase "I have a dream.." then Hilary will make billboards and posters and she would use that in her campaign.

Hilary is not smart enough to be original. Whoever is supporting her is a loser and as ignorant as it gets.

May you continue inspiring everybody, President Barack Obama, the pearl for the New Revitilized USA.
Is anyone actually approving these comments? How can you allow someone to say such slander as: Obama is Muslim and insinuate that he is going to take down America from within. Please read comments before approving. We don't need slander like this hurting American Politics.
If you want info on how delegate votes are alloted, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_%28United_States%29_presidential_primaries%2C_2008

There are 25 delegate votes resulting from the Nevada caucus.  The distribution is somewhat complicated.
Jane...do your research before you post crazy things like that. Here, let me help! All those who say Obama is no substance, has no policies, is Muslim, etc...

http://factcheck.barackobama.com/

With such a huge illegal alien population in Nevada, how many misused our Democratic process? Without needing any proof of citizenship and the fact that the culinary union and the entertainment industry is distinquished itself, by a massive need to sign on new union members. There is no doubt in my mind the law was violated because once you break one law, to trespass in our country, no judicial form called Declaration of citizenship executed, will stop foreign nationals under the penalty of perjury.
