Edwards: I can beat McCain

Posted: Sunday, January 20, 2008 3:49 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Tricia Miller
WINNSBORO, S.C. -- Edwards portrayed himself as the best candidate to run against Republican John McCain a day after he won the Republican primary here.

"Well, he is starting to look like the Republican nominee,” Edwards said in response to a reporter’s question about McCain, “and I think it's important for us to have somebody to run against McCain who can beat him. And national polls show that I'm the one who beats John McCain in the general election. And second, I think even more important than that, this is a guy who's made central to his political life campaign finance reform. It seems to me we ought to be putting somebody up against him who's never taken money from special interest PACs or Washington lobbyists. Between the three of us, that's me."

Edwards’ response echoes the campaign ads he has been running here on cable. They have appeared much more often than anything Obama or Clinton have been running this past week. The ads feature pictures of Obama and Clinton side by side and asks specific questions like, who’s the only candidate not to take money from Washington lobbyists? Then an announcer says, John Edwards is the only one.

Edwards took questions after his second brief meet-and-greet of the day. He first stopped at a bistro in Newberry; this stop was at the Barn Xpress restaurant and convenience store.

Edwards also admitted that he got his "butt kicked" in Nevada and declined to name primary states where he would need to start winning.

"What I'm going to do is run with everything I've got, fight for the things I care about,” he said. “We have 47 states left. Three have voted so far. So we got a long way to go, and I'm in this for the long term.”

Asked about his lack of support among African-Americans, Edwards blamed "overwhelming massive national publicity" given his two rivals.

"When I get heard in the African-American community they'll understand that I'm the strongest proponent of doing something about poverty, for universal health care, for raising the minimum wage, for a whole group of things that directly impact the African-American community," he said.

In his final stop today, the candidate will attend the NAACP's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at Zion Baptist Church in Columbia.

John, please take the high road & withdraw. You're only helping the scum bag Clinton's.
Edwards needs to hang it up because Obama is the only real hope of going all the way for the Democrats.

Clinto is un-electable in the General. Independents won't vote for her , and Dems will cross over to keep her from getting in the White House. She is like Bush on steroids when it come to dishonesty , and dividing this country.
It's not that tv commentators found the Clintons and Obama more interesting to talk about.  They were obviously under orders not to mention Edwards.  They would skirt the subject of Edwards with giggles and interrupt guests who were about to stumble into mentioning Edwards, and if they did mention Edwards up to a month ago it would be in a rushed undertone.  I'm surprised that more Americans haven't gotten so mad about the gigantic media corporation CEO's tyranny that they haven't voted for Edwards just to show that they are not the corporations's slaves.

It's surprising that more Americans aren't mad enough about the media's blocking out of Edwards to react by voting for him in defiance of the media's tyranny.
Edawrds needs to get out of Obama's way , because Obama is the onle real chance for the Dems to take back the White House.
Some facts that you are free to take as opinion ...

"Edwards portrayed himself as the best candidate to run against Republican ..."
1)  Mr. Edwards is very liberal, and it will be more difficult for him to garner attention outside the Democratic party.  (Opinion: All three Dems have a strong shot against the Repub, with Obama on top.)

"It seems to me we ought to be putting somebody up against him who's never taken money from special interest PACs or Washington lobbyists."
2)  The further one gets from liberal, the less this matters, so long as the candidate isn't one with special interests.  I've said it before, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Obama are taking the whole special interest thing too far, and Mrs. Clinton not enough.

These are a couple of observational facts from a non-liberal/non-conservative.
To Rep0X (Sent Sunday, January 20, 2008 5:12 PM):

The ad says, who is the only Democratic candidate "WHO HAS NEVER".  Obama has.  He did so in his Senate campaign, and while he was a Senator.  He just stopped while he was running for  President this year.

-----

To Martin (Sent Sunday, January 20, 2008 8:04 PM):

He laughed awful hard the other night in the Democratic debate.  Did you watch?

-----

To Sean (Sent Sunday, January 20, 2008 8:04 PM):

Republicans want to run against Clinton or Obama.  They have said all year that they are most worried about John Edwards.
Hillary '08:

Wow; I'm smiling at how predictable some people are.  That was Pavlovian.  Enjoy the phyrric primary victory.

It's a shame some people are more concerned about "making a point" or "voting for our girl" than winning the White House in the fall.
Edwards is fighting hard to win this election without being bought by the corporate interests that run have run amok on our country for the past eight years.

We need a real change from this situation and not a centrist, fence-straddling approach that tries to fix the system of pay to play, without stopping people (or corporations) from paying off their politicians.. it's that simple to me.  This is not a joke issue to a lot of voters.  It's central to everything.

Dream On
Edwards has my vote in the primary for sure!  I was going to vote for one of the other Dems, and then I thought to myself, anyone ignored by the media this much, MUST be good!  I read all I could on Edwards.. from both negative and positive views, and I truly believe in what he believes.  I just wish more people cared to know what it is he believes.
Edwards could easily beat McCain. The question is whether he would be helping the cuase by staying in the race. To that, I am not sure; the Democrats defintely need someone who is willing to change the tone and the vitriol in the race, which in my opinon, would be either a nomination of Edwards or Obama. If the country elects either of those candiates, it is showing that we are ready for a fundamental change in the way we do politcis; if we elect either Hillary or one of the Repulicans, it shows that we are not quite ready, which is not necessarily bad, but which shows that we are not quite ready to make the necesaary change, which is needed to move this country in the needed path, away from the one currently taken by the electorate in Russia.
Time for Obama to read the writing on the wall and drop out! He's hurting Edwards and the country!

Obama, you can't win an general election! Please leave with honor and throw your support to Edwards. Obama is going to put Hillary in the WH. If Obama hadn't joined the race, then Edwards would have won Iowa and Nevada by now. Hillary would be in retreat.

Sigh...
I lost most of my retirement in the internet bubble and the corporations had a stranglehold on the courts.  I work for UPS & have seen the power they have above their employees in political circles.  Oil companies are profiting while our citizens suffer. We are being bought by other governments. I WILL VOTE FOR EDWARDS BECAUSE HE FEELS AS I DO. THIS NATION'S BIGGEST PROBLEMS ARE GREED AND CORRUPTION FROM ENTRENCHED SPECIAL INTERESTS! PLS SUPPORT EDWARDS.
The only reason both Clinton and Obama Supporters demand John Edwards drop out of the race is because they KNOW
John Edwards will be them and John Mc Cain!

Obama most certainly has taken as much $$ from lobbyists and pacs that clinton has....its in the public files check em out.

lobbyists work on his campaign staff

and prior to running for president, Obama has taken millions of lobbyists money.....facts are facts

"NO MORE STATUS QUO!"
It's going to be a generic vote in November, meaning against republicans and for democrats. Look at the mess the republicans have made: Iraq, Katrina and now the economy, with a runaway banking system that really is on the edge because of the mortgage crisis. Poor leadership and corrupt dealings are the brand of the republican party now and it will be hard to alter that within the year. The nominees are almost interchangeable - Hillary, Obama or Edwards could and will beat McCain, Rudy, Romney or Huckabee.
John "I campaign for the poor yet I spend $400 on a haircut that looks more like a bad toupee" Edwards... I think all of the Democratic candidates (and a majority of the Republicans as well) are straight out of a mental institution, but Edwards is the worst of all.  Complete hypocrite and phony.
John Edwards needs to bow out of the race already and stop playing spoiler for Barack Obama. Everyone thought the Edwards' voters would end up backing Obama, but it's obvious that the majority are going to Clinton. I'm a huge Clinton fan, but Edwards is annoying me at this point. Give in already, you're just turning out to look like another crazy Kucinich or Gravel. As far as the "poll" that shows Edwards beating McCain, that was months ago - and since then both Obama and Hillary kill all the Republicans in their head-to-head matchups.
I am really uncomfortable with Bill Clinton's involvement in this process and would be more concerned about how much he would insert himself into the affairs of the presidency if Hillary were to win.

I also feel rather resentful about what appears to be this dynasty of leadership in this country. I don't believe that my vote is worth much these days and that's really a shame.

The Bush/Clinton dynasty needs to just let it go already. This is ridiculous. I, for one, don't want to see Bill Clinton with yet another term by default through Hillary. If we think that this wouldn't happen, then all we need to do is take a good, hard look at what is going on right now.

Do you really think that he is just going to back off if she is elected?

Yeah, right.
ls, Texas:  You must be the last person in the free world to not know that picture of Obama had nothing to do with the Pledge of Allegiance. Please educate yourself before you vote, and when evidence is put in front of you that you are wrong....DON'T IGNORE IT TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL BETTER.
Johnny appleseed edwards is a robin hood populist leading a pack a poor rabble while he enjoys his millions...uh hello
Let me offer this perspective on John Edwards. He preaches his desire to help people, but in much of his life he has turned his back on many.

He was born in South Carolina but when he decided to run for North Carolina political office (yes, US Senate is a national office but the election is a state election), he touted his hometown as Robbins, nothing unusual about this but he rarely said anything about his South Carolina roots during that campaign.

He briefly attended Clemson University, but his transfer to NC State University caused him to push his days at Clemson into the deepest part of his memory, rarely if ever mentioning that.

He graduated from NC State University with a BS degree in Textile Technology but his move to the Law School in Chapel Hill changed his college allegiance from Red to Light Blue. Points in fact: While US Senator, he took part in a pre-game coin flip for the NC State-North Carolina football game in Carter-Finley Stadium wearing a nice dark suite and a light blue tie. (It's the little things we notice.) He has supported UNC-Chapel Hill since his graduate degree from there and has done little to support his true alma mater, NC State, at least from a public perspective. He has/had season basketball tickets in Chapel Hill, and I believe football tickets as well, but he'll only come to Raleigh if the NC State administration does something for him.

He ran for US Senate and convinced the people of this great state to make a change from Lauch Faircloth but Edwards did little for the state when he got to Washington. He immediately set his sights on the Presidency instead of helping our state the way other Senators and Representatives do every day. He turned his back on North Carolina but for good political reason. The polls may have put him ahead but he was sliding rapidly and would have lost re-election. (If he has actually helped the state, he could have been re-elected.)

As his success as a lawyer grew, he moved his residence from a modest area to Country Club Hills (Carolina Country Club area of Raleigh) and his prestigious Alleghany Drive home in front of which he declared his run for the presidency. He continued to tout his desire to help the working citizens of this country but at the same time he decided he didn't want his children to attend the same schools as the working citizens, so he bought a large piece of property outside of Chapel Hill proper and built a residence. At some point in this move he actually said he wanted his children to attend Chapel Hill schools.

Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge him for spending his "hard earned" money the way he desires. As a matter of fact, I admire that he has made millions and spends it the way he wishes. But, in his move from Raleigh to Chapel Hill, he turned his back on Raleigh and on the Wake County School System. He would have been better off putting his money and energy in making the schools here better than leaving them.

In his run for the Presidency, (both times) he decided he was a native of South Carolina, specifically for the South Carolina primary, the results of which are a good indication of the electibility of anyone running for President. His North Carolina ties take a huge back seat when it comes to his campaign there, unlike the campaigns of others: Huckabee talks about his experience as Arkansas Governor; Mitt Romney talks about Massachusetts; Hillary Clinton uses her experience in the US Senate as does Barach Obama (though to a lesser extent but he also will talk about his service in Illinois politics). John McCann's experience is vast and always noted. Gov. Bill Richardson may have been the most experienced and was always talking about New Mexico. These candidates offer heritage that's more than growing up the son of a mill worker and more than a lawyer advocate for common people against huge corporations and a chance to make huge lawyer fees.

John Edwards has run away from his past and not embraced it. He was a darling four years ago in his run for the Presidency and later as Vice President (a mistake by John Kerry, if you ask me). And, he's a good looking person. Robert Redford in his prime would not do justice to Edwards if Redford played Edwards in his life film.

So, this brings us to South Carolina this week. I believe it's Edwards' last stand in politics (unless he turns back to NC...er...SC...on second thought...Robbins?). I'd like to see conversation with the voters there on why they may have supported him four years ago, but not this time. Give us something other than his electibility or lack thereof. Is it his message? I think you'll find the deeper message is his lack of experience and his ability to turn his back on his past. In reality, maybe he has no past that's appealing?

National polls may show him the best candidate to defeat John McCann but that's not important at this point in the election. After his less than 15% showing in South Carolina, he'll drop from the race and turn his back on the election, not offering to help the Democratic nominee.
Framecop- what are you Edwards' campaign manager? How can a candidate who hasn't finished above third in any primary stand any chance at all of getting the nomination let alone winning the presidency? We all know ouside of the Raliegh/Durham/Chapel Hill area, Edwards couldn't be elected dog catcher. The polls you quote are meaningless. (July 2004?- are you serious?!)
Framecop, hold on tight to Edwards and that Tired "Two Americas" nonsense. Until the Dems. can do better than Hillary Obama Edwards, This Dem. will hold his nose and vote Republican with Trish!
Bill Clinton did more for black americans than any President in history. Politics are politics and Obama will say what he will say.

But- for ANYONE to say that Bill Cliton is a racist is sheer stupidity. Clinton made political enemies in Arkansas- people hated him so much that they funded the impeachment drive gainat him because he stood up for the rights of blacks in Arkansas. He continually stuck it to the racists time and again when he was goverenor and appointed more blacks to positions of power than any other president.

You kids who are just entering politics and love Obama- and he is a good man- you should shut up until you learn some things.
I hope that Edwards stays in the race long enough to siphon off votes from Mrs. Clinton. Then let him drop out and send his support to Barack. I'm for McCain but Barack has integrity as does McCain and Clinton has NONE.
Go Hillary you are the one for the real working people of this country. Obama does not have the experience or the determination to whip this country into shape. He speaks a good line, but thats about all he seems to do.I don't hear any solutions from him. I don't care where he comes from he reminds me of a country club commercial. He may be nice to look at but he has nothing to offer except a few well written speeches that sound a lot like they were taken from King or Kennedy.  Get over the dream we need reality.
John McCain is a common thief. Nothing more.
Google "Keating 5" if you don't understand.

Hillary Clinton is so much like Bush Jr. that I wonder if Barb isn't her biological mother. A vote for a Clinton equals a Bush Third Term. The two families are that close.

Obama cannot beat McCain in a general election. Why? Because he's black. Sad, but we'd better face it.

That leaves Edwards, perfect or not, as the only hope for Democratic control. We vote for Edwards in the primary, or it's back to being subjected to the control of Republican traitors and war mongers.
Valerie Plame was still exposed. The evidence against Iraq was still fabricated. The constitution is still being torn apart by the corporate fascists of the GOP. Our soldiers are still dying for Israel.
There are still Republicans that need prosecuted and locked up.

Nothing has changed. And if we nominate a Clinton, nothing will.

Regards to all.
check out this polling site which shows the match up.  http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/favorables/election_2008_democratic_candidates_running_in_2008_presidential_election

My concern is that the media (which is controlled by big business) does not want Edwards to win and is focusing only on Obama and Clinton leading many to believe that Edwards is not able to win, or that the race is essentially over and Edwards should just drop out.  I am a big supporter of Edwards even though I am also a feminist and would like to see a woman president.  If it comes between voting for the most qualified candidate or Clinton, I'm voting for the most qualified candidate.  That candidate is John Edwards.
