Clinton says she'll abide by pledge

Posted: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 1:14 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a 20-minute press conference Tuesday morning, Hillary Clinton again called on President Bush to do something to help the economy immediately and said she plans to abide by the DNC pledge not to campaign in Florida, despite a national Obama cable ad buy, which happens to run in some Florida markets and her campaign took issue with yesterday.

In response to a series of questions about her husband's role in her campaign, the senator said his strong advocacy for her was to be expected and that the party would unite behind whomever is the nominee.

Clinton said Obama had decided to change his strategy after losses in New Hampshire and Nevada and he had come to the Myrtle Beach debate looking for a fight.

On Bill Clinton, she said, "I think on both sides, our surrogates are obviously out there advocating for each of us. But this is between us. This is who's on the ballot. This is who's presenting our case to the public."

The senator said this race was about the candidates as individuals and about drawing contrasts among the candidates on the issues:

"I just think that there's a lot of commentary about this that is really missing the point. You know, we are presenting ourselves as individuals, not as categories, not as fulfilling certain kinds of expectations. We are individuals and we come with our life histories, our experiences and I think that is exciting and that doesn't mean that we're going to step back and not criticize each other."

On campaigning outside South Carolina this week and whether it means she's giving up on the state, Clinton said, "For those of you who covered me in Nevada, you know that we were always present in Nevada. Either I was there (sic) my husband was there, my daughter was there. All of us were there. That's exactly what we're doing in South Carolina. I have a couple of obligations that I have to meet today and tomorrow, but my husband and my daughter are in South Carolina and we are waging a very vigorous campaign in South Carolina. We are obviously on the ground pushing hard. We have advertising running and I will be spending, you know, the last part of the week there."

On campaigning in Florida after Obama's decision to run ads on cable there, in what the Clinton campaign says is a violation of the DNC four-state pledge: "You'll have to ask them (the Obama campaign) what they are doing in Florida. I intend to abide by the pledge and follow the pledge and that's what we are, you know, planning to do."

She wasn't too worried about her pledge not to run in Michigan, where she was the only top democrat to appear on the ballot... She wasn't too worried about her pledge not to campaign in Florida to stop fundraising in Florida.

It's literally impossible to buy a national ad, and NOT have it run in every state.  It's implausable to buy 100,000 local ad buys for every major metropolitan and suburban area across the United States.

What a pathetic apologist and what a limp defense. What if it was Clinton? A hypocrite like you would be harping on it for WEEKS. Your guy is a wimp and your defense of his running ads A FREAKING WEEK after planting stories about how Clinton was going to violate the pledge is just more proof that Obama people are hypocritical and turn a blind eye to every misstatement, flip-flop and outright lie coming out of his campaign. Thank goodness we'll only have to put up with this crap for another couple of weeks...

"Is Hillary Clinton breaking her pledge not to campaign in Florida? Democratic rival Barack Obama raised the question - even though he insists Florida's vote won't matter - one day after a poll showed him 21 points behind in the state. An Obama campaign memo Tuesday pointed to "signs . . . that she may be planning to campaign in the state, inquiring about large venues and increased organizing activity."

A spokesman for Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-Ill.) presidential campaign sent out a memo Tuesday afternoon suggesting that rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) might violate her pledge not to campaign in Florida ahead of its Jan. 29 primary."

It is funny that on CNN last night one of the anchors asked Gov. Dean (DNC Chair) does he think this nominating contest will be quick or long, and he said it depends on the winner of SC. While to anchor came back at Gov. Dean and said do you think this nominating contest will go all the way to the convention, and Dean said no it should end by April. Dean did come back and said that he hoped this fight doesn't go into the convention because that would leave eight weeks for the dems to stump across the country. In light of what happened at the CNN debate and the bickering between Clinton and Obama I think that likelihood of a really contentious convention will happen. For his part Dean will have to find a happy medium between Clinton and Obama, because he doesn't want a repeat of  Humphrey/Kennedy and how the divisions within the Dem Party were so deep that turnout was depressed among certain groups, which resulted in Republican Presidents. I would like to know what would Dean do if this division hurts the chances of the party, and if so what he would do about it? Like it or not someone/group will be hurt, and that will affect turnout in the fall.

The delegates from Michigan DON'T COUNT in this race. Hillary left her name on our ballot to NOT disenfranchise Michigan voters (where the economy is the worst in the nation). Obama and Edwards were selfish (and insensitive) to remove their names simply because the delegates don't count. As a Michigan democrat, I am totally for Clinton - she's the only person with the intellect to steer the country in a new direction.
Sigh. Obama is running an ad campaign that cannot delist the Florida or Michigan markets.

He has purchased NATIONAL advertising. That means all of the states, even the ones where they're not actively campaigning.

You cannot, I repeat, cannot purchase a national ad package and exclude certain states. You just can't do that.

Way to go Clintons, distorting yet again what the truth is.
Why is it that so many Obama supporters think it's so terribly wrong for Bill to campaign for Hillary.  I don't hear them complaining about Michelle Obama campaigning for her husband.

Also, I get so tired of the Obama campaign accusing the Clinton campaign of "playing the race card", when it is the Obama campaign spinning the words of the Clinton campaign to make their statements sound racist.  Did everyone hear Obama last night when he said he would have to "see how well Bill Clinton dances before I can decide if he's a brother".  Give me a break.  You can't have it both ways, Obama.  Quit playing games with the American people.
Cathy:  You hit the nail on the head !!! Thank god there are educated voters out there.

Hillary 08!!!!!!!
Of course, Hillary fails to mention that Obama received permission to run National ads from the DNC.

The ads are not directed at Florida.

Yesterday, Hillary tried to use this as an excuse to break the pledge and go campaign in Florida.

Apparently, Howard Dean told her not so fast.
Hillary will abide by the pledge? What about that primary up in Michigan? She lost her right to criticize anyone about this issue.

Now if John Edwards wants to take a few shots, be my guest. Though, this is truly a pathetic elementary school attack.
Obama is NOT campaigning in Florida. He has not been there and has no plans of going there. He is running ads on cable television that can be seen in Florida. This is exactly what he said the HRC campaign was doing in the debate. They take one peice of truth and present it in an unflattering light. I'll be glad when this sort of politics dies out with the HRC campaign.
After Barack won in Iowa and gave that great speech this Clinton supporter went and gave him another look. I was very impressed and liked what I heard. Then I turned on the TV and saw all the mudslinging that the GOP candidates for doing against members of THEIR OWN PARTY and that brought me back to reality. Im sticking with Hillary because she is the one who will be able to stand up to that garbage and fight back. Some poster's have used words like "Rovian"...darn tootin! The Republicans are not going to play nice and the Democrats need a candidate who is tough and willing to fight back. So go get 'em Hil...Im behind you 100%.
So far Obama has been patient will Billary but I'm waiting for Obama to snap and call her out.  There is so much that he can throw back at her.  I think he's waiting for just the right moment - then POW!  Hillary will have a hissy fit!  Her talking points will fail her.  It will be a riot!  Can't wait.
She thinks the party will unite behind whomever is the nominee?  That is a terrible miscalculation on her part.  I've already notified Howard Dean of my intent to leave the party if she is the nominee.

I will never vote for her/Bill, and I will leave the party if she is nominated.  Her behavior (and Bill's) over the last several months do not represent me in any way.  If she is nominated, I will vote against her.

She has got to be kidding.  Does she have any clue as to the backlash she is facing if she is nominated?
DOESN'T ALL THIS MAKE ANY GOOD DEM SICK? WE'RE BLOWING IT!
"Did everyone hear Obama last night when he said he would have to "see how well Bill Clinton dances before I can decide if he's a brother".  Give me a break"

It was a joke - Obama has a great sense of humor!  Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I can't wait for Obama to be president so we can enjoy his sense of humor. Lighten up!
fact...all of the candidates SIGNED an agreement not to campaign there. gee, the other candidates are clever enough to find ways to campaign nationally witout those adds in florida.  so I hear all these excuses why its okay for O'bama to break his word...but the fact remains he is breaking his word.  I don't care who else has done what...THEY are all taken to task for it, why should O'bama be?  Fair is fair.  If it had been Hillary doing it, the press would be all over it and her, like always.  Quit giving the man a pass and allowing him to get away with just as dirty politics all the while he pretends to be of such high morals.  give me a break.  the republicans will tear him apart.
Will the US elect a whining President.. Is the heat too much for Obama in the Kitchen already?.. maybe  he should get out.. Everywhere i turn.. it is Obama crying foul because Bill Clinton is campaining for Hilary.. what is that about, what does Obama expect.. What does Obama think the Republican will do to him.. Has he not heard of the Swift Boat ad the last time around..

He is currently hiding his middle name wait till the Republicans start airing commercials calling   him Barack Hussein Osama

McCain has been waiting for years to become President.. there won't be any punch held during the General Election.. that kitchen is going to be hot.. so if Obama can't take the small heat being started under him now.. he may have to be the first Nominee to abandon the Campain because the Republican Machine will come after him.. no hold barred  anything will go..The rhetoric of the Primary campaign will be a thing of the past..and the soft citicism now from Hilary will be pleasant souvenirs

Please Obama you want to be president be ready to fight.. stop whining.. This is the guy when he thougth the nomination was a shoe in.. mumbled..arrogantly said  " You are nice enough Hilary.."
Its so interesting to read the hatred and hypocrisy of those who detest Hillary Clinton. I have never seen anything like it- . You are not being objective or fair in the least. I watched the same debate. Obama started it and everyone gets upset when she responds? Come on people. As far as Michigan/Florida thing- what Clinton said is she will not campaign in Florida- thats what the DNC mandated. Nothing states that your name cant be on a ballot- you receive no delegates regardless. Obama is a great talker- but there is no substance. The poor guy looks like a deer caught in headlights. How anyone can think he is smarter-stronger than Clinton is beyond me. She is a brilliant-tough  woman and we should all feel proud that she could one day be president. BE FAIR and OBJECTIVE people...stop your petty hatred. Its really tiresome
"What Obama and many others are sick of , is your BOLD FACED LIES! "
ObamaOrThirdParty2008

Whose lies?  Name some verifiable lies that she's spoke.  What is hilarious is that every 4 years, we go through this same mess.  A couple people spending millions of dollars to get a job that will only pay them 1.6 million total.  They'll poke, jab, and yell at the others, and promise things that everyone will forget by the time it's all done.

Nobody truly knows what the candidate will do once in the White House.  It's a big house filled with advisors and knee jerk reactions to the everyday things that happen in this world.

As for Bill, I think he did a heck of a job.  Did some stupid stuff morally, but the country was a lot better off than it was in '91.

I predicted that within our current president's first 2 years in office, someone would try to off him, or we would be attacked...well...we were attacked.  And we went to war, which seems to be the running theme with Republicans if you look at the history of the Presidency.
All the fakes scandals made up about the Clinton's. Why no outrage over Tony Rezko. Obama was robbing the people he claimed to help. Also, hillary was on the board of walmart in the late 80's. Obama was just out of law school. Obama lied about his relationship with Tony Rezko last night. Why don't you people look at the lives hillary has helped save?

I was a strong Biden supporter but check this out.www.thehillaryIknow.com

Where did you see that? Where's the link? More BS from the hypocrites of the Obama-Nation...

There is no link because it isn't true

Here's his BS from RIGHT here on the 15th

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/01/15/580733.aspx

Here's the Google page "dnc approves Obama florida ads"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=GGGL%2CGGGL%3A2006-22%2CGGGL%3Aen&resnum=0&oe=UTF-8&um=1&resnum=0&q=dnc+approves+obama+florida+ads&sa=N&tab=nw

Go ahead, prove your point, if it isn't total BS. I DARE you. Enough with you Obama-Nation HYPOCRITES.

If Hillary Clinton actually believes that the party will unite around her candidacy in November she's even more delusional that I thought.  She lies about her opponents, she sends a self-admitted perjurer out to lie about her opponents, and then she expects us all to roll over and play dead.  John McCain may not be everything I'd hope for in a President of the United States, but he's a darn sight better than an habitual liar and political sophist!
Once again we can see that the Clintons will do and say anything to win.  The press gives them a free ride. Hillary has lied and lied and the media refuses to call her on them.  Hillary was the only democrat to leave her name on the Michigan ballot.  As for Bill Clinton, he is a disgrace to all former presidents.  If not for a Republican congress Bill Clinton would not have accomplished anything.
Anyone who saw the debate last night and thought that Obama won, was either drunk or in a coma, because Hillary did everything but take him over her knee and give him a good spanking. He could not explain his own health care plan, he could not explain all his "present" votes in the Ill. senate, he could not explain his votes to fund the war, etc. etc. etc. Now you Clinton haters explain all the away.
It is funny how everybody is citing how Hillary kept her name on the ballot in Michigan when both Edwards and St Obama both tried to get their names back on the ballot there. No one told them to take their names off in the first place.

It's also telling that none of you Obama supporter will call your candidate on running ads in Florida. What abouthis promise.
What is with you stupid Democrats?  Not too long ago all you could do was rant what a great President Clinton was and how great the country was going under him.  Now all you do is waste your time slamming and tearing both Clintons down.  This is probably going to come back to haunt you big time.  I see another Republican administration coming up as Obama will not be able to win the General Election and possibly not even Clinton because of the Democrats fighting and bitterness.
OBAMA 08;   otherwise  ABC  = Anyone But Clintons
tell  her to kiss off BUSH shes a low life thief and a cover up for murder   where are her papers    thesis and rose law firm papers covering up their drug cartel
I'm a life-long Democrat - having voted for Mondale, Dukakis, Clinton, Gore and Kerry. But I am totally convinced that if Hillary wins the nomination with her scorched earth politics, the country will continue down the path of alienation of the electorate, pandering to our social factions, and the corresponding inability to meaninfully address our country's problems. I, a moderate Democrat, will vote for McCain over Hillary. Though I disagree with his policies, at least I know he will lead with integrity and transparancy. Hillary will finish the job that Reagan, Bush I, Bill and Bush II started - tearing our body politic limb from limb in a crass and cynical effort to grab and retain power. Shame on them.

Go Obama Go!
Pledge is to spew her Washington self serving paper hanging lies, conjecture and negative propaganda. We have seen the failure in her role as a senator, her roll of objection with negative resolve.

Pledge is to destroy the American morals

Pledge to convert America to a socialist state

pledge to invent more masking of priority issues

Pledge to be a more negative Washington self serving paper hanger

Position is not to serve, but to self serve!
Of course she'll abide by the pledge.  She's winning in FL.  When things are good, we see statesmanlike Hillary.   It's easy to be gracious when the sun is shining.  People's true colors emerge when it gets cloudy.  And man did we see some nasty things after Iowa; the old Clinton/Rove playbook got dusted off and America got more of the same.
Enough is Enough (Sent Tuesday, January 22, 2008 1:53 PM)

You mean Obama's true colors are showing now since he broke the pledge he made? If politicians like Obama talk/pledge something but do something else, should we believe such a politcian?
Please quit refering to Hillary having her name on the ballot in Michigan.  The Dems agreed not to campaign in MI. They did not say anything about not having their name on the ballot.  The punishment for MI was to deny the state from getting any of the campaign money.  The other candidates were too stupid to know what they agreed to.

You Hillary haters write like Republicans.
Well, I hope she keeps running her flapping painted lips. America is seeing the pure self serving paper hanger cut her throat! Lies conjecture and scandal, that's her experience, immoral lies, all this we have heard.

Nothing but nothing A Washington self serving paper hanger that is the record. The only reason she in this race """Gender""  "" self serving agenda "" Its no wonder the secret has to protect her!!!

Obama has too much at stake here, He should get right in her face and not back down. She does not have the guts to stand on two feet, and to hell with this sobbing act. She dosen't have the back bone nor the experience to be elected, Nor is she qualified.

The promises and hollow lies, That is what she has been giving for the past six years in the failed congress.. She has been tripped some many times!!!!

I GUESS PLAYBOY BILL CLINTON CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK TO HIS WHITE HOUSE OR PENTHOUSE IS IT?
"I just think that there's a lot of commentary about this that is really missing the point. --------
Yes, Hillary, please tell us of the drug trafficking in Mena, Arkansas; tell us of the drug money laundering through the Rose Firm where you and Vince Foster worked; tell us how two young boys were murdered then placed on the railraod tracks and the deaths were attributed to a train running over them; tell us about the many people that had testified or were going to testify who were shot or stabbed to death, tell us about the many others who also testified and were to testify who met their deaths in freak accidents.  Tell us about White Water, your Tyson Futures, Whitewater, Filegate, Travelgate, allegations of rape & sexual harassment against Bill both in Ark and in the White House.  Tell us about Monica. Tell us what happened to Vince Foster; tell us about all the lies you and Bill told, tell us how you deceived us, tell us of your coverups and investigations, etc. etc. etc.  Tell us about the Lincoln Bedroom, and tell us what all you stole from the White House when you left.  I'm sure Americans want to know all of these things.  Also, tell us how you took dirty money from Mr. HSU and others.  We're waiting. :):)
There certainly are a lot of Obama haters here as well, calling him all kinds of names and belittling him.  A nearly 50 year old man taking advantage of a 21 year old intern is hardly stupid stuff morally.  What if she had been your daughter, would you still feel the same?  The Clintons both carry a lot of baggage, scandals, more scandals, lies, spins, coverups, more scandals, lies, spins coverups.  Lincoln Bed Room, theft of White House Belongings when they left, etc.  Remember Bill Clinton coming into the world's livingrooms pointing and stabbing his finger at us proclaiming "I DID NOT HAVE SEX WITH THAT WOMAN -- MS LEWINSKY!"  His sexual DNA was on her dress.  He still kept lying until the dress was tested.  Hillary blamed the "Right Wing Conspiracy".  Bill is getting to an elderly man but guess he still likes cigars.  As far as Bill goes, he is making an ass out of himself.  To bring up issues is okay, but to personally attack Senator Obama is NOT okay, and that is what he has been doing.  I have concluded the Clintons are afraid Senator Obama will win the nomination and they simply won't stand for it...they keep throwing manufactured dirt out there hoping something will stick.  You know what?  Senator Obama has more honesty, dignity, leadership skills, oratory skills, and excellent judgement.  In 2002, while not in the US Senate, called to a T what would happen if we went to war in IRAQ.  Hillary VOTED for "Authority to use Military Force in Iraq"  VERY POOR JUDGEMENT!!! She now says, she voted for diplomacy, OR to send the inspectors into Iraq.  The name of the bill is clear:  USE OF MILITARY FORCE = WAR.  Use of military force is not diplomacy and its not sending inspectors into that country. USE OF MILITARY FORCE IS WAR!!  Is she going to start a war with Iran or North Korea for diplomacy??  She then voted to name the Iran Military forces as Terrorists.  Since we are fighting a war on terror, is she going to attack the Iran Military Forces?  VERY POOR JUDEMENT AGAIN.  Is this what we want in our President and Commander and Chief??  POOR JUDGEMENT???  No thanks.  I want a President and Command and Chief with GOOD JUDGEMENT, THAT WOULD BE SENATOR OBAMA.  He has the gifted ability to look into the future, to think before he acts, and to make the right decisions the first time.  He doesn't act without thought or wait to see how others are voting or what might or might no be politically correct.  He goes with what is best for America and I think he will make a wonderful, dedicated, and HONEST President and Commander and Chief.  Go Obama 08!!!  We are behind you!!

IN THE END, GOOD ALWEAYS OVERCOMES EVIL
Commentators often point to Obama and Clinton's identical votes against US supreme court justices John Roberts and Samuel Alito as an example of their alignment. But the two have split on other nominees chosen by George Bush, whose habit of appointing industry allies and personal friends has been bitterly criticised by Democrats.

Obama voted alongside 83 colleagues to pave the way for confirmation of Bush interior secretary Dirk Kempthorne. Clinton supported a failed attempt to defeat Kempthorne, who earned a 1% lifetime score on environmental policy from the League of Conservation Voters.

Clinton also opposed the appointment of George Casey, who spent three difficult years as chief US commander in Iraq, as army chief of staff. The former first lady revealed her decision after publicly challenging Casey to explain a Pentagon audit that found US troops lacking in equipment needed for combat and training of Iraqi recruits.

"I believe that our soldiers deserve the very best we can offer for their protection; therefore I voted to oppose general Casey's nomination," Clinton said before the vote one year ago. A website maintained by her campaign still calls Casey "one of the chief architects of the war".

John McCain, who some Democrats anticipate will be the Republican nominee, joined Clinton and a dozen others in voting no. Obama, by contrast, signed off on Casey's bid.

----
What does this tell you about Obama? Is he Bush-lite more?

Obama's voting record shows he is more Bush-lite.

Sighs, I fell for his lies.
NO CLINTON DYNASTY.  Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton.   No Way!  Not for me.  Not my vote!   This is not good for America on so many levels!   I am a hard-core Democrat that has voted many times before, and I will NEVER VOTE FOR HILLARY!
