Fact Check: Hillary beating them higher?

Posted: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 5:39 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
There have been some fact checks already on last night's debate, but here's another. Last night, Clinton said the following: "...[L]et me just get in here, because there are a lot of polls showing that I'm beating them higher than anybody else.  I don't think that has -- I don't think, frankly, that has much to recommend this far from an election."

That came following John Edwards citing that he's the only one to beat John McCain in a CNN poll, which, by the way, as we pointed out last night, is more than a month old. (It was conducted Dec. 6-9.)

But what is behind Clinton's claim that she's "Beating them higher than anybody else?" "A lot of polls?" What polls are they citing? Here are the most recent reliable ones that rebut that claim.

USA Today/Gallup (Jan. 10-12): Clinton does beat Huckabee 51-45, but loses to McCain 50-47. Obama, though, beats Huckabee by a WIDER margin, 53-43, but does lose to McCain 50-45.

Diageo/Hotline (Jan. 10-12): Obama BEATS McCain 43-42 and Clinton loses 48-45. And Obama down the line beats Huckabee, Romney and Giuliani by wider margins than Clinton.

Reuters/Zogby (Jan. 10-11): McCain beats Clinton 47-42. Clinton beats the other Republicans, BUT Obama beats them by wider margins. And even though McCain beats him also, it's by a narrower margin than he beats Clinton, 45-53.

See now there's the problem- MSNBC put that out there like it's the truth. Except like New Hampshire, we know polls are flawed and gives us either a false sense of security or a flash of panic depending on who your voting for. We as Americans dems and republicans must not vote or be led to believe our candidate is a winner or a loser based on polls. Polls can come out anyway you want them to based on a number of factors- the biggest, the way its worded. Also who are they asking? I work in a company that employs more then 5,000 people, after New Hampshire we sent out an email asking that anyone who was ever asked to participate in one of these polls monitoring the race to let us know. Out of 900 people that responded- only one said they had ever been contacted to vote in an election based poll- so ask yourself- have you ever been called? And then decide what is real. Let's not forget all news group endorse one candidate or another- since I'm a dem its ok their tooting Obama's horn, I just don't believe its accurate and the way they prsent this story without the questions they asked- or what group was polled in what part of the country - too many factors unknown-that's why the candidates do their own polling and depend on their own numbers
Start from the premise that the Clintons are lying. Everything kind of falls into place if you use that fact as your starting point.

Boy! Well said!!
Polls are not to be trusted I also saw many polls that put Hillary way ahead. Do not trust polls people,
they mean nothing at all this season.
It is funny how Obamas army will bring up Bill and his past when they want to make a negative point and then in the same breath ask why Bill is part of the strategy. Seems they have learned to use double speak very well. Can't blame your adversary for something you do also, makes your argument look dubious and you disingenuous.
Senator Obama will not last past SC unless he is ready to be more specific in what he would do as president, older voters have heard all the politcal rhetoric he is using before, he needs them to win. There are not enough young voters to carry him to the White House, Better be nice obamaites you could be the reason he will lose.
If he loses and you jump ship to vote for McCain, there is no great loss, you were never a real democrat anyway.

Since I get all my information, ideas, diet, and beliefs from polls, this is very disturbing.

One hardly knows what to believe these days.

I do know that, according to Rasmussen, 78.8% of obese men between the ages of 40 and 70 living in New York City, claim to never experience extreme flatulence, except when reading polls.

Maybe they should cut back.

MSNBC seems to support Obama- this is the third time they stopped comments once they had a page full of negative comments directed toward Clinton, Edwards or the Republicans- HMMM
If you want a Democratic President vote Obama. He is the only chance that we have in November!
McCain will BEAT Clinton(s) bad!

OBAMA 08

We all know how accurate polls are!!!  Depending on which day you look at them anyone could be winning or losing.  It is good to see that we have a black man and a female in a position to be the next President of the United States.  It says something about the American people.  It makes me proud. Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will win the Presidency.  The people of the United States (Democrat, Independent,  and Republican) are equally being affected  by the disastrous results of our current Republican Leaders in Washington.  Look at gas prices, wall street, house foreclosures, etc.  If McCain is the candidate who does and still supports the Iraq war, just remember that a barrel of gas was less than $30.00 a barrel before going in to Iraq.  We all know what it is now!  Personal attacks on a candidate will not cut it.  Addressing the issues that affect Americans is what we are interested in.  If the Republicans start attacking either of these candidates for items that are not related to the issues that affect change, The American people are smart enough to see through it.

It is time for change.

Like it or not our next President will be Hillary or Obama.

Lets look seriously at the differences these folks have on issues that affect the lives of every American.  Who can we TRUST to get the job done.

After listening to the last debate, I question Obama's past record of evading important issues that should have been voted on.  I do not want our
President to evade issues that affect the American people.  I want action.    Obama is not for healthcare that covers healthcare for all.  Edwards and Hillary are.  That concerns me because that tells me that
Obama is for healthcare for our children but not the Mother that takes care of them.   Hillary worked for a WalMart's Board and Obama supported slum landlord people involved in illegal activity.  I think there is a contrast to this between the two.  Obama openly admits to drug use, kind of question that as an example for future generation.  Obama didn't vote on over a hundred issues that could have affected the people of Illinois.  Why???  I do not want a President that runs from responsibility.

I think these are differences involving issues that affect the American people are very important and the American need to know of them.  Just what are we really getting for our vote?

As these differences in issues come out that tell us about the candidates that are factual, the American people will have to make a very important decision.  Who is best suited for the Presidency, Hillary or Obama.

After all, we are selecting a person to run the most powerful nation in the world.

So whatever poll you come up with that best suits whoevers desires.  It really does not matter.  Americans are smart enough to vote on the issues, not what some random sample of a few suggest us to do...
As I read Montanaro today, Jan. 22, he claims that the poll Edwards quotes to show he can wins by greater margins, was taken Jan. 6-9.  Yet Montanaro states the poll is more than a month old. Since Montanaro hold Edwards to such high standards in his quotes, Montanaro should stop acting as if he understands numbers himself and retire from the business.
You guys really need to be less biased...

Why don't we see any 'fact checking' on Rezko. Obama said he worked for him for 5 hours yet the man donated 150k+ to Obama, sold him some property at a discount, and Obama assisted him in getting lucrative government contracts.

Is that not every so slightly more important than if 'higher' means more than 2 points on a poll or two?
Anyone that would vote for Monica Lewinsky's boyfriend's wife has had their head buried in the sand for the last 20 years. We'll all be speaking Chinese if she wins. And do you all not remember the press trying to elect Kerry just a few short years ago? They will lie about stats or just make up their own. Dan Rather should be in jail to this day for trying to throw an American election. I would vote for Stalin before Hillary. At least he'd be honest about wanting to destroy our way of life.
Something about Clinton worries me a lot. Her campaign seems so SLY. Not bad or anything..just so sly that i worry about their true intention. Obama seems like he truly want politics to change for the better. The same zeal the Clintons had in 1992 is what Obama has and for my vote, fresh new ideas and fresh faces has been historically good for this country. The Clintons now have powerful friends and interest that like i said her government will cater to these friends and since we are dumb enough to not notice, it will be OLD politics as usual. Let me ask everyone this question: WHY WOULD YOU RUN FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT? your answer will help YOU make the right choice. Dont let any candidate pull a wool over your eyes and more importantly your inteligence.
Are these the same polls that show Obama creaming Clinton in NH? Most of the figures also seem to be within any margin of error. I have little faith in polls anymore.
You have to analyze the words when a Cliton is talking. Does "beat them higher than anybody else" even refer to the polls of hypothetical matchups? She may have been referring the fact that she beats them higher in the mountains or higher on the map. Can we even be sure of who "them" is? Watch for a campaign memo on this.
Bill Clinton has been warned by 3 impartial Democrats that he's going to fracture the party.

Too late. Obama is my guy but I'd take McCain over Hillary in a second.
Even with next to zero coverage by supposedly impartial reporters, John Edwards is still in this race and should not be counted out at all.  He's the Democrat who is absolutely electable next November.  I know people who are strong Republicans who say that he is the only Democrat they'd consider voting for. I wish you would have included his poll numbers from the most recent polls.  It's actually kind of amazing he's still standing when the media has been acting for months like the only candidates in the race for real are the celebrity firsts/major money makers/top of the hit parade chartbusters Hillary and Obama.  It's a testament to Edwards' strong and principled message that when people actually hear what he has to say, they become more than willing to support him and work for him.  EDWARDS 08, no matter what celebrity candidates the celebrity 'journalists' are trying to cram down our throats.  I hope we Democrats wake up before the media manipulates things to such a point that we wind up with ANOTHER Republican in the White House.
Hillary Clinton salivates about fighting with the Republicans. She brags about waiting for them to attack her. That's an opinion based in fact.

With that said, how can anyone recognize the ineffectiveness of our government due to insane partisan bickering and believe that Hillary Clinton will be able to get anything done as POTUS with her mentality of demonizing Republicans? How in the world will she be able to carry Democrats in Congressional races across the country in to office with her brand of polarizing politics?

Wake up! Democrats can not win the WH with just Democrats and Hillary's rhetoric proves that we will see a continuation of the same type of "politics as usual" from not only the last 8 years, but the wars and hyper-distrust from the 90's if she is elected.  Where's the attraction in that for Independents and Republicans disillusioned with their own party?

Obama offers the best hope to lead a unification of our country around healing our many divisions, achieving the big goals needed to move our nation forward domestically and internationally, and he has the proven legislative record and campaign success to show that he can draw Independents and Republicans to join in that goal.

Cynicism is not the answer, nor is hardened loyalty that diminishes if not outright ignores reality.  We need that "working coalition" or else we'll sink deeper in to the depressive malaise that has effectively paralyzed our once great American spirit.
To me Hilary's dubious qualifications are moot. She is simply too polarizing. I'm a Democrat and there's no way I am voting for her. I'll sit at home on election day if need be. If it's McCain vs Clinton I have to go with McCain. So far the GOP turnout is depressed. Let Hilary become the Democratic nominee, people will be lining up to register down the block to vote against her. Even Democrats realize that Hilary has the potential to lose the election. Bill's campaigning for her opens up the door to all kinda of attacks, some legit and some not. That's why I still can't believe they put him out there. It's almost like the Clintons are willing to screw the Democratic Party over to win the nomination. That's the conclusion I've come to and it saddens me. I've spent the last week saying " sit down and stop doing your wife's job!" every time I see him on TV. He's really damaged his legacy (whatever you may think of him) with the hijinks of the last week. If you have to call Al Sharpton's radio show to clarify what you said...you've messed up!
So whatever poll you come up with that best suits whoevers desires.  It really does not matter.  Americans are smart enough to vote on the issues, not what some random sample of a few suggest us to do...

Simply reading these comments show how very inaccurate your statement is.  Nearly everyone here spins things to fit the nice little view they have of the world.   You have any comment, situation, fact, etc and take 10 people and have them comment on it, and you'll get 10 different points of view, all of them adamant that they are correct and factual.

Take a look at how many people post comment after comment filled with obviously false information that they are believing as fact.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals and you know it." - Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black.

And I believe Albert Einstein said it best...

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

Hypothetical match ups before the nominees have been chosen are a crock. I cannot believe the press continues to report on this.
Yes, and we all know how reliable polls are when it comes to a woman candidate. Don't count out the largest voting block in this country (women). We're often missed in the polling, but we vote.
If these silly foolish Dems don't shoot off their own foot first, any Democrat will beat the Republican.  Fact checking is good, how about fact checking the charge made that Obama represented the slumlord in Chicago, accepted money for years from him, returning it only recently, and if such an important community organizer, why wasn't he aware of this person and his crimes?  Just asking.  But the media doesn't question the golden boy.  Just want to destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton.  Like I said just a bunch of foolish Dems.
I ALWAYS loved MSNBC until i realized they were ANTI woman and ANTI certain canidates. You guys don't report the NEWS you make your own OPINIONS news and PUSH it. hardballs chris matthis is so bias against woman, especially Hillary and so is JOE ( good morning Joe) both NEVER miss an opportunity to SLAM the Clintons.  What happened to REAL JOURNALISM??? Why is NO ONE disecting OBAMA??  So lop sided over there i have switched to watching CNN and Fox. You guys are an embarrassment to news reporters everywhere.  Talk about Clintons, you all act like little boys who formed the "he man woman haters club".  a discrace. won't watch MSNBC again.  If i want to see NEWS reported instead of your biased OPINIONS i will go to CNN. thanks for the EYE OPENER.
I watched MSNBC last night 1/22/08 to see if the the Private Meeting between Clinton and Edwards in the Edwards Green room was reported.  According to CNN it took place after the debate.
Here is the report:

Clinton, Edwards Hold Private Post-Debate Meeting

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (CNN) — What were they talking about?
Hillary Clinton and John Edwards met privately backstage following a very contentious Democratic presidential debate in this coastal city, sources with both campaigns confirm to CNN.
The meeting took place in the Edwards campaign green room.
One of the sources said the meeting happened by chance and the conversation consisted of light chatter. The source added that Clinton did jokingly take a jab at Edwards about his beating up on her during the debate. In fact, the real fireworks were between Clinton and Barack Obama.
An Edwards source noted that it was not surprising the two senators met backstage.
"That happens back there,” said the source, who said it has happened “more often” with Obama. “It’s tight quarters – we’re all on top of each other.”
The question is — with only two weeks before Super Tuesday — what else was discussed?

end of report

Now could Hillary be asking Edwards to drop his campaign by promising him the Vice Presidency.

Does not seen out of the realm of possibility

The Clinton would do or say anything to win.

I am a Caucasian female over 50, college educated and I would NEVER vote for Hillary.
A Clinton name on the democratic ticket is an automatic vote, by me, for the Republican ticket
I have yet to see one negative article about Obama in this entire race.  No one is that perfect unless the media wants you to be.  Right MSNBC?  The bias against Hillary on MSNBC.com and TV is shameless.
Don't buy the hype, folks.  The  republicans are deathly afraid of Hillary, and judging by Obama's uneasiness in the debate on Mon, if Bill Clinton can get under his skin.. what will the republican swiftboaters do to him?   Polls are fluid, I've seen others that have Hillary beating all the rethugs.

The media has a mission to kill Clinton's campaign.  Ask yourself why?  If she's the easiest to beat.. why would the corporate owned media want her out in the primaries.... Hummmm could it be because they'd rather run against Obama?   Wouldn't they rather run against a junior senator with virtually no foreign policy experience who has a very liberal record?  Think about it folks.  Don't fall in the same ole trap, AGAIN.
Why is the CNN poll regarding Senator Edwards beating all the Republicans over a month old?  Because CNN didn't include him in the most recent poll they conducted.  You can't blame him from using a December poll (which he pointed out himself) if they don't include him in the more recent poll!
some of you really need to get lives...a poll on some pretend matchup in 11 months is just pure speculation...the more immediate problem seems to be that both parties are being exposed for the danger they are to our democracy...demohacks are really having to confront their positions about race, class and sexism while the reprehensibles are tring to decide whether to nuke the non christian world, cut the tax rate to zero for everyone or rewrite the constitution in the eyes of the most loony of them...woohoo
It is sad that the Clinton haters don't take a look at records....Clinton and Obama's.  He is getting a free ride just like George W. Bush.  No one looked at his record.  He would never have been elected president had this happened.  Why doesn't someone look at OBAMA's record in Illinois.  135 PRESENT votes, his relationship with Rezko,  Money, his house, etc.  Why did it take this weekend for OBAMA to return $41,000?  Why did he not return his house?
Check OBAMA's facts.  His response is always they are distorting my record.  No evidence to support this.
I'm one woman who isn't voting for Hillary Clinton if she is nominated.  I don't want the Clintons in the White House again.  They can't handle the great power that comes with it.  Just look at what happened in the second term of Bill Clinton's presidency. What makes people think that it won't be scandalous this time?
Go Obama 08 !
The Hillary Clinton website will not allow me to practice my freedom of speech. She does not allow any comment on her blog that might not make her look perfect.  The Obama blog is open to all opinions.  That's what this country is all about right?
I was pro-Clinton since Bill was president (I even bought Hillary’s book).  Now I think they are both shady and will fabricate the truth to get her elected.  If she gets the nomination, I will vote McCain (I have historically voted democratic).  They need to quite making false attacks on Obama so that he is in a position to constantly defend himself.  Let him share his ideas and the public can make decision based on those ideas.  They lost my vote.

Go Obama!
What's the point of having a blog if people can't express their ideas.  I can't believe that I have been sitting here trying to share my thought and they are not being posted.
The pundits and the polls mean nothing. They are completely there for entertaining kids.

WKING UP PEOPLE. Let take a look back the result in NEW HAMPSHIRE and NEVADA. HILLARY IS THE WINNER. SHE WILL BE THE WINNWE ALL THE WAY TO THE WHITE HOUSE.

GO HILLARY!
HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT.

THEY HAD THE POLLS RIGHT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE THAT HILLARY WAS LOSING BY DOUBLE DIGITS AND IN NEVADA AND YOU SEEN/SHOW THE OUTCOME...PEOPLE WAKE UP THIS IS NOT ETCHED IN STONE OF HOW THE ELECTION SHOULD TURNED OUT...I WISH THEY WOULD STOP TAKING POLLS IT OFFSET HOW PEOPLE WOULD REALLY VOTE....AND EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT POLLS NUMBERS SO IT DEPENDS ON WHICH POLLS YOUR’E LOOKING AT...WHY ARE WE SO QUICK TO SAY PEOPLE ARE LYING WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ALL THE FACTS...MOST OF THE PEOPLE ON HERE HATES HILLLARY, WHY I DON’T KNOW. AND YOU LIKE SOMEONE THAT THE MEDIA HAS NOT SCRUTINIZED WAIT TELL HIS (O-BAMA)DIRT COMES OUT AND HE (O-BAMA) WILL BE JUST LIKE THE REST...TARNISHED....MEDIA ARE PLAYIN WITH YOUR PSYCHE…

HILLARY BEEN THROUGH ALL OF THIS THAT IS WHY YA ARE HILLARY HATERS...GET OVER IT PEOPLE....

THAT IS WHY I VOTE FOR HILLARY!!!!!SOMEONE THAT BEEN THROUGH THE MUD AND SCANDALS AND SHE STILL RISE...
you people have lost your mind if you realy belive the media is showing obama favor. But i know you know that is not close to the truth but you figure since the media tried to play clinton as enevitable and it back fired , you figure if you say the media is for obama it would have the same effect. Problem is no one with a high school education would belive such nonsence.
I am beginning to see that Slick Willy and Hillary may be stopped from their Venonous tactics!!
Please go to Clinton chronicles.com and see the truth about these jerks,
Bill Clinton just received 20 million from one of his crooked deals while he was in office.
He also got a hefty pay off for the nafta deal which cost a huge block of Americans to lose their jobs to
over-seas countries !!!
BILLARY IS IN TROUBLE. To be sure.

To bad the first serious woman candidate for president is really running to be co-president.
i know you clinton supporters dont want to talk about shady associates , Rezko has not been convicted of anything as of know . Shall we talk about mr shoe and all the other clinton people who are serving time as we speak, not to mention the ones that are not spending time in jail because they paid bill for there fredom . sure you want to go there.
All the Hillary lovers on here who are now dismissing polls all of the sudden need to consider two things:

One: throughout the vast majority of the entire campaign, your candidate has been trumping polls as the "inevitable" candidate.

And secondly, this article is not saying anything about the polls other than the fact that Hillary flat out LIED ABOUT THEM with such ease at the debate.

You guys twist and distort the truth as easily as your candidate...

OBAMA '08
Why aren't Edwards numbers posted in these posts? You guys refuse to include him in the discussion, just like you did with Kucinich. The media DOES NOT need to decide who is best for America, or whom the front runners are and that is precisely what you're doing by excluding Edwards. Yesterday, the front page of this blog Edwards name appeared a paltry 7 times, Clinton appeared 48, and Obama 27.

Spread the news about the candidates around. I bet if Clinton was on Letterman last night you would have talked about it, same for Obama. Why not Edwards? Because he has a message that threatens corporations and is in-line with how most Americans think? He was the only one talking about the economy and how it was in trouble months ago.

News flash: no one cares about Hillary or Barack because they are doing what the Democrats do every election year; get a huge lead and in the months prior to election shoot themselves in the foot. This time it's because they can't stop arguing about everything. Who cares? Step above it. I know it brings ratings and page hits, but I am pretty sure everyone is sick of it by now and if they don't stop, we'll have another four years of Republicans in control.
Actually there haven't been any true fact checks.  Why isn't the media interested in the fact that Obama worked for a slumlord.
Also, for the people who keep citing Hillary on the 130 present votes in the Illinois legislature: please do your own research on this.  This was 130 out of over 4000 votes (3%), the majority of which were strategically planned and executed with other democrats and organizations such as planned parenthood.  Please do not just spout the Clinton's lies as gospel...
Yes you can trust these polls.  I am a Democrat living in Oklahoma a very Red state and I can tell you they want her to get the party nomination.  They know they can beat her.  Republicans from my state have said to me more than once they will vote for a Democrat this time around as long as it is not Hillary Clinton.  She is wildly unliked beyond our party’s base.  We need to wake up as a party and not hand this over to her if we want to reclaim the government and bring the nation back from its great divide.
Thanks Domenico!

Also Hillary folks- I keep telling you she cant win the general- and it seems a paper in her own state is endorsing Mr. Obama. PBefore you waster your vote on Hillary please check out a great endorsement article here by the New York Observer:

Mr. Obama stands the best chance of restoring the essential relationship between power and the American people. He is not flanked and blocked by an existing, entrenched power structure; his words are not muddied by layers of handlers; he still says what he means.

Mr. Obama would also be the most formidable Democrat in the general election. He has demonstrated a capacity to energize young people and attract new voters, and is the only candidate in the Democratic Party who attracts independents, who are the fastest-growing part of the electorate. His refusal to demonize the Republican Party as a right-wing attack machine will appeal to those independents as well as moderate Republicans
Seriously people. Here is a wake up call for everyone reading this. Hillary Clinton WILL be the nominee for the Democrats come this November. I give credit to Obama for running a tough campaign and giving the Clintons a run for their money, but come Super Tuesday with states like California, New York and New Jersey where there are the most delegates, Hillary leads by double digits. South Carolina and Illinois will not be enough for Obama to win the nomination. This race will come down to delegates and super delegates and they both favor Hillary. You can confirm all I say at the www.realclearpolitics.com website.
Dianna is completely correct. All the Republicans, and the GOP heads, believe (correctly) they can beat her in a General Election. Karl Rove wants her to be the nominee, he's spoken on this before. An Obama/Edwards - Edwards/Obama ticket would be unbeatable.
I am for Hillary.Obama has been up in Washington scince 2006 yet he says he never got into Washington but he knew it needed a change. If he never got into Washington how in the hell would he know it needed a change. He said that if he was elected president he would surround himself with advisers. We already have a president that is surrouded by advisers. In other words he knows nothing. He even has all the people that helped Bill Clinton get electded working for him.Did you notice he even talks like Bush,he can,r speak a whole sentance. He says a couple of words and then says ah.I also believe he has an ear piece that tells him what to say.He can never rermember what he says. His adviser has said that Obama is a muslim but not a practicing one.The big muslim over in the mid east has said we will be attact from inside our own country.Another thing he doesn,t have the latinos be hind him and there are millions of them in our country. In wyoming several latinos and people from other countries took the oath and became citizens of this United statesI think That is great.
Why are these candidates going along with Bush`s eco stimulous plan to stiff seniors living on Soc Sec?  Nothing for them, but if you own a bus. you get up to $1,600, the benefits of the stimulous AND bus. tax breaks!  Why not cash to seniors who really need it and will in fact spend it quickly on gas, clothes, heating, home repairs, etc?
Don't need these polls, just political common sense. Clinton would energize the GOP base like no other Democrat could, and her lack of trustworthiness will not appeal to independents. Tactically speaking, she is the worst candidate the Democrats could run.
