Some Huck staffers work for free

Posted: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 5:57 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
In brief conversation with Huckabee's press secretary, Alice Stewart, NBC confirmed that there are some members of Huckabee's senior staff that have volunteered to continue working without pay in the run up to February 5th. Stewart said that some senior staffers along with several staff members who worked for Huckabee in early primary states have voluntarily offered to work for free so that the campaign can save money.

"We've got plenty of cash on hand to compete in the February 5th states," Stewart said, adding that the campaign raised over $250,000 at last Sunday's Virtual BBQ at Chuck Norris' ranch in Texas. But in an effort to scale back, Stewart said "there are some folks who have volunteered to stay on without pay," and there are some employees from early states that have been let go because "it's just not necessary to keep those folks on staff."

This decision was made in the past couple of days, Stewart said, and there will probably be more efforts to maintain the frugal approach that has characterized the campaign thus far. But she also emphasized that Huckabee was not pulling out of Florida and would compete there as well as in most of the states on February 5th.

why should they get paid anyway? If they truly believe in what they are doing why do they want to be reimbursed. Is that volunteer work?Just asking
please all thompson people go for huckabee and quit the baby killing, and get a fair tax, and a decent person.
Tithe them all Huck, use what you learned as a preacher, make your tiny little army embarrased that they are not paying their fare share to put god back in the White House, oh yeah wave the confederate battle flag too.
Yawn...
Huckabee should have gotten in on some of that easy hedge fund money when the other democrats set people up to fail. They can afford to run plenty of ads.
Staffers working for free huh?! Why aren't they bashing Huck over the head for that like they did to Rudy!? Mike's got more of a cold chance in hell of winning than any other candidate!

Talk is Cheap, Action is the substance you can rely on!
VOTE RUDY 2008!!
This is just one example of the kind of support that Mike Huckabee inspires.  People believe in him, and when you truly believe in someone and all that they stand for, then its not at all surprising when people show loyalty and make unselfish decisions.  I can see this happening among Huckabee's grassroots supporters, and I'm happy to see the same thing occurring in the national campaign.  I think Mike Huckabee's frugality speaks well for how he'd handle our national economy as President.
"I think Mike Huckabee's frugality speaks well for how he'd handle our national economy as President."
Are you kidding, do you want a president that has to ask for volunteers and free labor, or a President that can grow the economy and create money-making jobs?
Everytime the issue of money comes up, it seems to show that the Republicans are hurting for money...with the exception on Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.  No offense to Mitt, but he would be broke as well if it wasn't for the personal fortune.  I like Huckabee and for me, it's between Ron Paul and Mike.  I am worried Mike will run out of money and drop out before I can even vote...so what will be my options then?  Where I live the people take to the street for Huckabee and Paul...never for anyone else!!!
Do you guys really want a guy who can't raise money or pay his own staffers running our country?

Maybe we should all just work for free.  I figure things like food are really more of a wan't than a need anyway.
What I found disturbing last night's debate in South Carolina was the difference of time.

If you review the tape, you will see Wolf Blitzer gave Hillary to ALWAYS finish her talking points. He NEVER tells her that she has 30-seconds to respond.

Yet, he would repeat this to Obama and Edwards.

Is there a bias to supporting the two Clintons' campaign by the main stream press? Why? Is this fair?

Why cannot they have an automated timer on the stand of the candidate? Thus, the viewer watching TV can see the running time taken by the preferred candidate of reporters.

YAWN --- and Chuck hoped to raise $1 million for a BBQ
for the "HUSTLER" (HUCK).  Chuck Norris is the cheer leader for Mike!  Next he will be wearing a mini skirt and use Holy Mackarel's POM-POMS!!  Way to go CHUCKABEE.  What next for the Over The Hill Gang Leader?  Another Texas Ranger show called WALKABEE, TEXAS RANGER & HOLY MACKAREL!!!
Over 250K at the Norris bbq??  I thought Chuck said he was going to raise 10 mil?
Lets just remember....evangelicals...give at the church...not at the voting ballot.  They can vote how they want...but this proves their money stays at home..or in the church..else...MIKE..Where's the beef?  (money)
Or, is this a case of...when the woman actually gets out and works...the family can send money to a candidate...ulnike if she stays home and "home-schools" her child..the family just doesnt have enough money to support your campaign.  I guess if this was living by "God's Standards"...the money would be pouring in!!!

Else...you are just another preacher praying on the uneducated (home-schooled)...and finally the rest of the evolution believing public wised up and realizied the constitution is not in need of changing.
I am hearing all over the news that Huckabee cannot raise the money to be competitive. We have seen the heart warming sacrifices as voters have traversed great distances to donate jewelry to the Huckabee campaign because they didn’t have money to give.

That may not be the best way to go as campaign laws require disclosures of who the donors are and how much they gave on campaign finance reports and it is difficult to value a piece of jewelry and whether it exceeds the donation limits.

As I see the vultures surrounding this campaign, hoping for a carcass on which to prey, I am compelled to share this fund raising plan that has already led to positive response and could potentially catch fire and spread throughout the country.

Remember about a decade ago when Rush Limbaugh had a caller named Dan who was having financial troubles and Rush I believe suggested he have a “bake sale”? That led to something akin to the conservative version of Woodstock where people came from around the world to raise money. That was quite a bake sale!

What I propound in this video is a nationwide rummage sale that could catapult Mike Huckabee’s campaign coffer right up to that $10 million dollar goal by February.

Wow - work for FREE - no kidding!  PAID - LAID what difference does it make? Huck will Preach the U.S. into Peace with Chuck & Chick along for the long haul.  Don't forget that she has the Holy Spirit reining inside her, and that she had a radical "conversation with herself".  (or was it conversion?) A woman who leaves her husband because he has M.S. so what do marriage vows mean to these HOLIER THAN THOU? They must all get together for a preaching session before the debates.  Just think another White House invite!!!
Sweet action, we raised 250,000 last week at a Chuck Norris Virtual BBQ!!!

that's bush league, man. Get out of the race.
The biggest problem with Washington (always has been) is how freely they spend OUR money.  Look at all the candidates and how they pour millions into their campaign like it was water. Mike is SECOND in delegates while spending 1/20th the cash.  Just think how much he'll save America when he gets elected and sends his FAIR TAX message to Congress. Less Taxes, Less Government; More prosperity, More Freedom.  GO MIKE!
To John Alexander: For your information, I'm only an average mom with 3 kids, not an activist or anything, but since I recently saw Mr. Huckabee's victory in Iowa and his later debates, and watched his speech called Pastors and Pews on youtube, I've concluded he's an honorable man of living faith. I've donated to him $1350 in just these few weeks using my credit card. Nobody forced me to give him, but my heart just goes out to him and wants to help him out. For your information, many many people are giving to him, not because we would usually give to any political campaigns, but because we LOVE Mike Huckabee, the most decent candidate in the race. Sneer as you wish, but the truth is beyond your comprehension, for obviously you don't understand what is right and what is wrong, and most importantly, you don't understand what true love is!
That is encouraging news. The more I learn about Huck, the morw I like him.

Go Mike!
Evidently Fox News hasn't done their homework since they are constantly reporting that Huckabee has pulled out of Florida, but this article confirms that he has not.  Truth? Fair? Balanced? I don't think so.  A true conservative that knows how to manage money in a responsible way - we are so looking forward to Mike being our 44th President!
Here's more information for John Alexander and the rest of the sneerers, who probably will wag their tails the minute they a millionaire like Romney shows up: the night of SC result came in, I burst into tears, heart aching together with all the God's people. And you know what I did after I wiped off my tears? I pulled out my credit card and donated to Mike! That's how we reason, that's our logic! Yes, most people supporting Mike Huckabee are young, or with many children, so we are not the most financially fit group. I saw on Mike Huckabee's site, in their blogs, some people are giving their gas money, some skip meals to give, some skip Starbucks to give, some borrowed first time to give, etc. etc. We're little people, many are waiting for a paycheck on Friday so they can give, some are on fixed income to give, many are teachers on a tight budget, so many could only give $25, $50. But though the amount is small, the heart is full of love. And many are praying for Mike day and night. I for one have never fasted before, but I fasted on the day of SC poll. I pray for Mike when I wake up, and through the day and when I go to bed. I ask God to give all my share of favors to Mike. That's  what a supporter of Mike Huckabee is like!
Democrats and Republicans alike should support Huckabee because he is a humanitarian who helped victims of Hurricane Katrina without stopping first to ask what party they were registered as. Unfortunately the Republicans are not compassionate enough and the Democrats are not socially just enough to look past their bigotry of religion.
I agree that the staff's volunteerism is an example of the quality of people with the campaign. I often hear and see other campaigns (I will not mention names) some of whose supporters are rude and filled with vitriolic. I appreciate the caliber of supporters I've met in the Huckabee grassroots movement. I encourage them to continue to share the issues and praise all candidates that are consistent with the issues.

I like Hunter and Thompson especially on defense. I just thought Huckabee was the candidate most consistent with all of my positions on the issues.

Gov. Huckabee is the most experienced executive with the best record on the conservative issues. Now he is the most conservative candidate by far and the other two conservatives have retired.

I sincerely hope Gov. Huckabee has places in his cabinet for both of these fine men.

Let's get the best candidate for our nominee and not Rhinos who are not conservatives or a good man that is not the best.

I am doing more and more for Mike not less and every down turn inspires me to work that much harder... like he says... it is a marathon worth sacrificing for... our country, heritage, and children's future.
Of course, Tulsa, you're an idiot. These are professional political talents and this is their job. They can't just go to some church on Sunday and pull down a $25,000 speakers fee. Then there are all those other really loyal and committed supporters that couldn't afford to work for no money. I don't think any less of their commitment for that.

Look reality squarely in the eye. "Out of money" means "out of money." Campaigns require money to pay people to do the work that needs to be done, to pay for exposure.

Mike is going to remove himself from the game this week. That means no paid ads. He is going to go campaign someplace else while the media is covering this week's candidates. That means no free media. He is missing key members of his team, which will leave them more "agile" but less adept in the games to come. Mike has just been sent back to the minor leagues.
I understand that people are cynical these days. Yet from my prospective, I have given out of my  believe in Governor Huckabee as conservative that will stay true to his convictions. Conservatives say that if you belive that being a good steward of the enviroment makes you a tree-hugger. I think those fruits are nuts, however, we should do our part in cleaning up trash and saving our waters. I do not beleive that it will take government intervention, Governor Huckabee can use the bully pullpit to encourage us to do our part. I do not believe that how I view this makes me a liberal or a moderate it makes me an American with common sense. Shame on you all that claim that Huckabee is a joke. I know that you all want our votes if we would just sit at the back of the bus. Use our resources Governor Huckabee that we have sent you wisely.
Isn't this what all campaigns are supposed to be like?  These are people that believe in their candidate so much that they just won't give up the fight. "This is a marathon not a sprint."  I hear another Huckaboom coming! Go Mike!!!!!

This is an example of the dedication Mike Huckabee inspires among the people who support him.  It also shows he can handle money in a crunch.

I saw an "apples to apples" comparison of his tax record with that of Mitt Romney and discovered the actual difference between the Romney tax increases and the Huckabee tax increases was less than $2.00 a year per person.  In the end, that's less than the tax increase the people of Arkansas voted for themselves (not mentioned in the CFG and Romney ads, that I know of).

What is amazing is that he managed to bring his state's education system from 49th under Clinton to number 8 in the nation, and to restore the state's decaying infrastructure to one of the best in the nation according to Trucker Magazine.  Then he left the state with an $800 Million surplus -- so the tax increases can now be refunded...  Mitt Romney also had some great achievements too.  Both of them deserve some props for being Republican governors in Democrat states.

However, the more I look into Huckabee, the more I like him
The great thing is that Huck's Army has thousands of active volunteers spread across every state in the country, all working for free because we are supporting a great candidate with a great message.  Money can't buy that kind of a team!!
I have supported Huckabee since August 2007 and still
stand with him. I applaud the frugal common sense plan his campaign is adopting and I applaud those of his staff who are making personal sacrifices to continue their efforts for him. I applaud also the high spirits that many of his volunteer backers have maintained in the face of a close disappointing loss in South Carolina where independent voters gave John McCain a three percentage point victory.
I am a social and economic conservative.  I like the way Huck runs his campaign.  After examining all the candidates, I wish I was a resident of Florida so I could cast my vote for Huckabee.
John Alexander (post from above)

I, like the other Huck supporters give $ to the Huck campaign and we are happy to do it.  But this is NOT a tithe.

We also have enough $ to also tithe (donate to our churches and charities, 10% of earnings) on TOP of giving to Huck.

We are not embarassed to give.  Especially since we all know Huckabee has given out of his own all those years he was a pastor living on little to nothing and giving to others.

The truth is, the more you give, the more you get.

I've gotten 2 raises from my boss since I started giving.  But I'd give anyway.
"This is just one example of the kind of support that Mike Huckabee inspires.  People believe in him, and when you truly believe in someone and all that they stand for, then its not at all surprising when people show loyalty and make unselfish decisions." Interesting way to make lemons into lemonade...If his supporters believed in him half as much as Ron Paul supporters believe in their candidate then Huckabee would have no problem funding his staff. Many people think this exhibits a lack of fiscal responsibilty on Mike's part and might be evidence of just how bad off our government would be with him in charge. Oh yeah, that's right he'll just raise taxes!!!
I also think Mike Huckabee's on how well he is doing on his shoestring budget speaks louder than words. Mike's frugality in comparison to Romney's millions. Let's see what Mike could do he had Romney's money. Mike I'm behind you 100%. I like Mike - Mike is right for 2008 - Vote Mike - get the budget back!!
Gotta love a guy that can stretch a buck!  Go Huck!

Dave, Tn (Sent Tuesday, January 22, 2008 7:07 PM)"

He was too busy damning gays at the time.
Mike is watching budgets and not wanting to go in the red even before he is president.  I just sent my support and I am voting for him based on a great record in his state as Governor.
I believe Mike is the best candidate in the field and a man with character and integrity.  He is very positive in his approach and inspires a no quit attitude. There are many battles ahead and more wins in the coming days and months.  Let's stand behind Mike, get more voters and financial support.
If Mike Huckabee had the money to compete with "all the rich" candidates, he would pass them ALL up! Also, he should fire his Campaign manager, as whoever it is, they failed to keep contacts with Huck's supporters, or leave us an E-Mail to make suggestions to help him or contact questions. i would gladly work free!
Lets raise some money!  Take lessons from the Ron Paul campaign staff!
How frugal was Huckabee when raising taxes? During his term, Arkansas showed a net tax increase of $505 million , and the average Arkansan's tax burden grew from $1,969 to $2,902. Governor Huckabee raised more taxes in 10 years in office than Bill Clinton did in his 12 years. During Huckabee's 10 years as governor, state spending more than doubled (from $6.6 billion to $16.1 billion), higher education and public schools got big increases, as did social services. Meanwhile, the state added about 8,000 full-time workers to its payroll during that period, a 19% increase (according to the Bureau of Legislative Research). The conservative Cato Institute gave Huckabee an "F" for his final term as governor on its Fiscal Policy Report Card, saying, "Huckabee's leadership has left taxpayers in Arkansas much worse off." His grade was lower than 15 of the 21 Democrat Governors. His overall grade as governor was a D.
"The main reason for the drop was his insistence on raising taxes at almost every turn throughout his final term." – Cato Institute explaining why Huckabee had dropped from a "D" to an "F" on their Fiscal Policy Report Card. How about with his pardons of criminals? Governor Huckabee's non-stop clemencies continually hindered the work of criminal prosecutors and miffed Republicans. The numbers are staggering - over 1,000 clemencies and commutations of criminals as governor. Most people now are familiar with his push to parole convicted rapist Wayne Dumond, who went on to rape and murder a Missouri woman less than a year after his release. But there are many more troubling facts regarding Huckabee's pattern of releasing violent criminals. While I cannot speak for Huckabee's motives, it seems clear that he used poor judgment and was reckless with this executive power.
Huckabee released more criminals than the combined total of every border state to Arkansas (made up of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana) - even though the combined population of these states is 16 times higher than Arkansas'. He also issued more than double the clemencies of his three predecessors combined. In many cases, Huckabee's actions set loose savage criminals convicted of grisly murders over the passionate objections of prosecutors and victims' families. This American Spectator story details some of these violent cases and explains the resulting difficulties they presented prosecutors working with other victims and their families. Huckabee and his appointees ignored the laws on the books, including the requirement to notify victims' families and explain the reasons for those clemencies. He said to fully explain his reasoning would cost millions of dollars and "take money away from education and Medicaid and other things." A 2004 investigative article by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette found that prisoners had a better chance of being granted clemency by Huckabee if they had a mutual acquaintance, labored at the governor's mansion under a prisoner work program, or a minister intervened on their behalf. Prosecutors say Huckabee was more inclined to release or reduce the sentences of prisoners if he had direct contact with them or was lobbied by those close to him. He often refused to learn the facts of the cases (sometimes not even reading the murderer's own confession), made no attempt to get the police/prosecutor's case files, or even get input from the victims' families before making his decision. The clemency granted to one multiple DUI offender was likely tied to large political contributions from the offender's family, including a soft money political organization run by Huckabee's people. "Last January, after Mississippi Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, a Democrat, lost his re-election bid, he issued 16 clemencies, and there was a huge outcry. That's how many Huckabee averages per month." – Arkansas Leader, (August 11, 2004) "He seems to believe that granting clemency to murderers, rapists, drunk drivers and other convicted criminals is a part of the everyday affairs of the governor's office rather than something that he should approach cautiously and selectively." – Robert Herzfeld, Saline County Prosecuting Attorney during Huckabee's tenure "I know some of the people that Huckabee let loose have reoffended. Some of them we've caught and some of them we haven't caught......I used to be able to tell the families of victims, in all good faith and candor, that it was a rare event when a governor commuted a sentence and let a murderer back out, or a rapist back out or a child molester back out. But I can't do that anymore." - Larry Jegley, longtime Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney "I felt like Huckabee had more compassion for the murderers than he ever did for the victims." - Elaine Colclasure, co-leader of the Central Arkansas chapter of Parents of Murdered Children.
With Huckabee as president, we will end up with big government, taxed to death, and criminals on the loose. Huckabee says he wants to get rid of the IRS and the federal income tax and replace it with the fair tax, which would be even worse. The American people can't afford it, 23 percent or more tax on top of state and local taxes on everything you buy!
Huckabee is a fun loving down to earth guy with common family values and a strong prolife probusiness plan. His strong stance on our national security will help strengthen us so we can continue to stop another 9/11 from happening on our soil. I am most concerned if a "moderate" liberal like bill clinton gutted our spying capabilities and our military to the point where 9/11 came without notice, how much worse will an ultra liberal like hossein obama and his farakhan support take us in starting our country on "friendly" terms, handing over our government to islamic sharia law. I was raised in Iran. I know what it's like to be living under an antiAmerican government and people. Vote for Governor Huckabee so we'll never have to suffer like we did under islamic rulers for over 1300 years already. Thanks kindly.
Mike Huckabee knows how to do more with little than any other candidate. He will run the government the same way.

Wow.  Chuck Norris.  I have never paid any attention to celebrity endorsements and never will.  I get sick of seeing Norris in the background, you know?
O yeah! Mr. John Alexander, he was waving the confederate battle flag! I guess that's why he got all of these African-American endorsements.

I have become convinced since the South Carolina primary of the viability of Mike Huckabee's campaign.  The quote from the Bible,  "When I am weak, then I am strong" applies to our situation.  Our prayer is not primarily that Mike Huckabee become President; rather that in all that is done, God is glorified.  With that kind of attitude, there is no limit to what will happen.  Give to Mike's campaign?  Yes.  Despair?  Absolutely not.  The world cannot comprehend what an enviable position we are in.  Do your part and sit back and watch an all powerful God in action.  It's going to be great!
fred's gone and the hukster is going soon, can you say good bye hukster?
