McCain defends his Republicanism

From NBC's Bethany Thomas
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- McCain held a town hall here with about 600 people.  Fresh off of a McCain in his own state of South Carolina, Senator Lindsey Graham introduced McCain, “I’m very proud of my state.  The people of SC turned out in large numbers and John McCain won…Remember when you go in and vote, you are voting for the commander in chief of a nation at war.”

McCain hit on his regular talking points of the economy and fighting radical Islamic extremism before turning the microphone over to questions.  The crowd- a large number of them retirees- was very eager to ask questions.   So eager that McCain had to tell a few several different times to sit down and let him finish his answer on a previous question.

One woman pandered to McCain’s age of 71 years old when asking about social security.  She said, “You hear, 50 is the new 40, 60 is the new 50 and when Reagan was elected he was 69 and that was almost 30 years ago, which means you’re actually only 60.”  McCain responded, “Thank you for that new math on my age.  I need to take you with me wherever I go.  I am very interested in that formula.  Thank you.  I would very much like to use that.”

McCain’s appeal to independents and Democrats has some of the conservative right, such as Rush Limbaugh, calling into question the Arizona senator’s definition of being a conservative.  A voter asked, “Some Republicans say you are not conservative enough.  I say you are just right- being a little big moderate makes you the only candidate that can beat the illustrious democratic candidates that you might be facing.  Do you mind being called a moderate Republican?”

McCain: “I wouldn’t mind being called a very young Irishman.  I kinda resent labels, but the fact is- I am a conservative.  If you look at my fiscal record, my national security record, my social- I am a proud conservative in the Ronald Reagan tradition and Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.  I am a proud conservative.  But let me also say my friends, I think conservatives are also concerned about radical Islamic extremism.  I think that’s why I was able to win the Republican vote- both conservative, moderate, liberal in South Carolina and New Hampshire.  They care about the stewardship of our planet and they care about the state of Israel and maintaining its freedom and independence.  I am proud to reach across to all parts of the party, but I have to tell you, I am a conservative and that’s my 24 year record.”

This is going to be THE big issue come Florida. Is McCain perceived as not conservative enough. The evidence from polls right now is that he will not. Whether he leads or trails in a poll, John McCain is stuck in a 23% to 26% range, whereas Romney is getting as high as 30% in some surveys. McCain cannot win with that small a plurality now that the race is down from a five-person race to a three-and-a-half person contest. Check the latest polls and this issue of range here: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/01/in-last-ditch-to-stop-front-runner-gop.html
Give me a break, he is proud of being a conservative?  He is proud of being a Bush apologist and cheerleader?  He is proud of not holding the Bush administration accountable for their proven lies?  He is proud of supporting an unjustifiable war?  And Lindsey Graham, give me a break...  A commander in chief in a time of war???  So we forget everything else except the war in Iraq?  These republicans are pathetic.
It's the "same old" Republican song and dance. The Republican Party is over.
McCain better be up to speed on his tactics. His military career occurred in a time when 3rd generation warfare of conventional army to army warfare was in vogue.

The game has changed to 4th generation warfare which is fundamentally diferent and rooted in counter terrorism logistics and tactics.

McCain needs to be very careful or he's going to start sounding like an old warrior who doesn't realize the game has changed.
WE ARE ABOUT TO GET FOOLED INTO AMMESTY===AND LOSE THIS COUNTRY BY MC CAIN=====HUCKABEE TOOK A PLEDGE TO DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS   WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT
John McCain is as republican as Ted Kennedy. I am at a loss as to how anyone who considers themself a conservative can vote for McCain.

- McCain-Feingold 1st ammendment violation bill
- McCain-Kennedy amnesty plan bill

The list goes on and on.

Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate who reaches across party lines. I've never seen a candidate that unites liberals and conservatives as he does.
McCain said: "I am a proud conservative in the Ronald Reagan tradition".....John's already showing signs of senility...Reagan-omics has all but destroyed this once great nation. Now its great wealth for a few, no manufacturiong jobs in THIS country. They're gonna throw us a $600 bone. It doesn't FIX what's WRONG. What Ronald Reagan's "conservative" economics started, fueled by Clinton signing NAFTA, and brought to the brink by the biggest idiot of them all: George W Bush. We need REAL CHANGE. FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE. I believe Barack Obama will be the vehicle by which we can begin to right the profound wrong that started with Reagan.
Conservative???ha ha
In his record?  Amnesty for illegals. Need I say more??
McCain runs with the likes of Kennedy and Lieberman..real conservatives I'd say!
Romney is a true conservative, it IS in his record.
I don't think that his conservatism extends to either Teddy Roosevelt or to Abraham Lincoln.  Ronald Reagan should be his model.  The other two were a part of the Republican party, but I don't think that they would really endorse McCain (or any one else running as a Republican).
