Speaking times, second segment

Posted: Thursday, January 24, 2008 10:36 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
During the second segment, the candidates themselves determined how much time each candidate spoke. The candidates had the opportunity to address one question to one other candidate on the stage. Romney asked Giuliani and then McCain asked Huckabee, who then received a follow up question from Tim Russert. Paul then asked McCain a question. Both Huckabee and Giuliani then asked Romney a question. McCain had an opportunity to also answer Giuliani's question since Giuliani made a subtle jab his way. Giuliani and McCain then each received a follow up question from Tim Russert.

McCain: 4:33, during four times
Giuliani 4:22, during three times
Romney 4:17, during three times
Huckabee: 3:32, during three times
Paul: 0:34, during one time

Total time so far:
McCain: 13:00, answering ten questions
Romney: 12:43, answering eight questions
Giuliani: 9:36, answering seven questions
Huckabee: 8:09, answering six questions
Paul: 3:34, answering four questions

Mccain won the debate tonight bug time!
Romney never did anything good for MA! He should not be standing out there and keep using MA governor records! Because it is a joke!
Mccain will win the primary!
As an American I find it appalling the Congressman Paul is being shut out by our 'tabloid' media (formerly mainstream).  He, by far has more on the street support and organic money flowing in than any other GOP candidate.  The Republicans will be soundly defeated in November by the Democrats, and the Americans loose all the way around.
who would have imagined that Paul would get the least amount of time?
oh, well. He did a very good job.
It was somewhat amusing seeing McCain squirm at Paul's question. Almost like he didn't understand the question but talked anyways. Give Paul more air time please.
I would like to learn more about Ron Paul, but he doesn't ever seem to get asked any questions.  His signs are the only ones I ever see in people's yards.
Wow it was so nice of them to ask Ron Paul minutes worth of questions...  What a balanced debate!
OK, I watched the whole debate, with my barf bag. Lets see if I got this straight. This bunch wants to do away with social security, or privatize it, they are against gays, they like guns, they like jesus, they want to balance the budget, even though their party was in control of all branches of government for the last six yearsand ran up the biggest defecit in history, they want to continue the war in Iraq, and they are against the clintons. Yeah, after hearing all this crap, I might vote for them-------NOT
Typical, another media blackout for Ron Paul. 2nd in Nevada, 2nd in LA, more vote than Rudy and almost no time given. What a sham.

NBC should be ashamed for only allowing 4 minutes and 8 seconds to the popular Ron Paul.
Another clear example of how Ron Paul's message will not be allowed equal time through the media. And you wonder why we dominate the internet....
I was wondering why Ron Paul got the least amount of time to speak and the least amount of questions asked? Four question for Ron Paul and ten for McCain.
Let Ron Paul speak!
Fellow Americans please don't let this deliberate bias go unchallenged.  The media is trying to pick your candidate.  Congressman Ron Paul has a sterling record over 20 years in Congress and voting from the very beginning not to go into Iraq. MSNBC is and the rest of the media are completely against him.  This is not fair and it should be an insult to you, the voter.  Stand up to this and refuse to ever watch the station  again!  Oh and don't forget to vote Ron Paul.
They really are scared of Ron Paul's message.

But it's getting out there anyway.
I like how NBC is pointing out its OBVIOUS bias. It seems like you can't get a single fair news organization out there...
you like how McCain said he know about economics but had absolutely no clue how to answer DR.PAUL'S question. and isnt JOE LIEBERMAN an independant?
I think people should turn off the TV and get on the internet to learn about the different politicians. I support Ron Paul because He is the most honest man in the bunch and He has been voting the same way for 10 terms in congress. I like his stance of freedom and He wants to get the FEDS out of our hair. He believes in peace and He still stands by that. He is the most conservative person on that stage. He even knows what is going on in this country as far as the economics. While the other canidates were playing foot ball he was collecting coins and it lead to his life time hobby of studying economics and sound money principles. He is the only one that wants a sound dollar based on silver not working hours. I wonder why Americans have to work harder and harder its because the government keeps printing money out of thin air and that causes every price to go up.
MSNBC has allowed their credibility to be lowered to fox news standards.  I mean to do you really think americans are stupid enough not to notice this obvious bias from a national media station.  You are also aiding the destruction of democracy in this country.  How do all of you sleep at night.
I was wondering why Ron Paul got the least amount of time to speak and the least amount of questions asked? Four question for Ron Paul and ten for McCain.
I boycott FOX for shunning Ron Paul.  Now I boycott MSNBC.  How obvious can you idiots get...leaving him out of the questions and seldom putting the camera on him?
Ron Paul is this country's only hope!
I once believed that the "conspiracy people" were the crazy ones, but watching this blatant media banning of Paul compared to the others make me think they're not so crazy. I thought this country was about freedom and liberty and choice but only if the "powers that be" are OK with it. Shame on MSNBC for such a poor and unfair debate.
How does Giuliani get a lot more questions than Huckabee and Paul when he only gets 2% of the vote?  How does a mainstream news source rationalize giving more time to certain candidates?

It seems the main job of the moderators is to give equal questions and equal time to the candidates.... and MSNBC failed miserably.
When is the Media going to learn to quit taking positions and give equal time to all....Again whats going to decide this race is big money  and the media, the media doesnt have to pay for political endorsement by the amount of time they favor a canadate....  sponsor pay for there time. and they can make or break a canadate...Shame on you

kinda like fox, fair & balanced

Boy did Rudy squirm at the "wet-foot/dry-foot" question! And McCain's shudder to Dr. Paul's question was amusing.  I thought Ron Paul was well spoken and had the best responses in relation to the time given. Please give him more air-time.
MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News have lost all credibility with their efforts to silence Ron Paul.  They have consistently told America who they should vote for and completely ignored their responsibilities of journalistic integrity.  Every candidate should have the same amount of questions and speaking time regardless of how "radical" there ideas are.
Wonderful job! Very informative. Well done by all!!
I'm sure many people who heard the claim that Ron Paul was being blacked out by the media thought it was just sour grapes.  After looking at the debate time of each candidate it appears that it is true, there is no other way that the times would be sooooo different.  How sad that MSNBC doesn't trust us (the citizens) to hear all the candidates so we can make informed decisions.
I am shocked an appalled that they would disrespect a medical doctor and respected congressman who tell the whole truth and nothing but, over and over and over.  Each time I see it it motives me even more.  This is disrespect to the entire thinking country.  Cmon talk of Chuck Norris and Stalone. McCain looking foolish “I, as president, like every other president, rely primarily on my secretary of the Treasury,” he begins apparently unaware that the secretary of the Treasury is also the chairman of the secretive President’s Working Group on Financial Markets. Is this what america wants?  Similar to Hillary vs Obama spectacle.   I guess America wants to toss it's future in the garbage to find out where Paris Hilton passed out last night.  This is a sad state of government, media, and country.  I am saddened and disgusted.
