Oh, the generational gap

Much has been made of the generational gap between the candidates in the race and voters going to the polls tomorrow. But what about reporters covering the election?

As surrogates flood South Carolina and other early primary states, the who's who game sometimes comes down to whether you were wearing bell bottoms or baggy jeans. At Starbucks the other day on Gervais St in downtown Columbia, Mary Wilson made a surprise appearance. I smiled and nodded and shook her hand, while some older latte sippers downright swooned. For those of you who don't know, Mary Wilson was in The Supremes.

Just the other day, Usher stumped for Obama in Orangeburg. He was joined on stage by Kerry Washington and Chris Tucker. A few more veteran reporters asked, " Who's Usher?"

Another asked, "Is this guy big?"

And just today, I received an email from another veteran reporter who was asking about Obama's reception at Orangeburg. When I told him that the crowd was all students and seemed pumped that Usher, Washington and Tucker, he wrote back, "I don't know Usher, Chris Tucker and Jerry Washington. They are musicians? Singers? Politicians?"

Its not often us cub reporters get to school our more senior colleagues, and I was more than happy to oblige.

*** UPDATE *** And for those who don't know... Usher is a three-time Grammy award winning  R-and-B singer. Kerry Washington is an actress who's played supporting roles in movies like Save the Last Dance and Ray. And Chris Tucker is an actor and comedian who's best known for co-starring in the Rush Hour movies.

no surprise about those three supporting obama...
How about covering something substantive, for example the backlash among women over Hillary's misleading characterization of Obama's record on women's issues.

Hillary's late surge with women didn't have to do with her brief display of emotion (a notion that insults women voters anyway) but more to do with their having been intentionally misinformed by the Clinton campaign regarding Obama's record on choice.  This video shows a major Hillary backers reasons for switching to Obama.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVuMYKs8iJs

Imagine if Obama was caught sending out lying mailers suggesting Hillary did not support civil rights for blacks, the way that Hillary sent out lying mailers suggesting Obama does not support women's rights. What would the reaction be? Why does Hillary get away with lying about Obama's record to women. She tried to do the same thing in the debate, when she used a procedural vote by Obama to suggest that he didn't support victims' rights legislation that he had actually sponsored the original version of. Think that over a bit. Hillary lied about the significance of Obama's votes in an attempt to suggest that he was weak on women's rights.
There is a generational gap, but it means nothing.  Everyone is supporting their candidate and it's not racially motivated.
IT'S THE MEDIA...STUPID!
They are the ones keeping the race thing going. People...we are smarter than this.  We can not afford these errors and mischaracter of personas based on race to divide us as a nation.
Time to turn the page on that issue.  We will really be sad to wake up in 2010 and find our country more divided than ever and still not getting anything done.
Wonder why it is the next generation to always be better than the previous, it's suppose to be.  The older pave the way for the next generation, but the older generation seems to always feel that generation knows less about what's going on.
This is not so and I charge all Americans to denounce the things that divide us.

so your basically telling us that every African American musician, actor, and Talk show host America is supporting Obama. wow if every FEMALE in AMERICA did that Hillary would be a shoe in.  but if every WHITE MAle voted then I guess its everyone else??  i feel sorry for african Americans who may really want Clinton but have to deal with being traitors to their ethnic group. And i feel sorry for men who may want clinton and have to deal with all of those other men. Its sooo frustrating!!!!!!
It plays to Obama's appeal. I am 30 years old and agree there is a total disconnect from the younger generation and the older one.

The younger generation wants a total change in Washinton. A complete overhaul.

The older generation just wants a democrat back.

The older generation must jump on board with changing politics as usual or the Democrats will lose the White house again here in 08!
Oh that's who they are.....

The other day I went to our local hip hop radio station to get three free CD's my wife won.  They opened up the storeroom and said to pick out three.  Nothing in there rang a bell, so I picked three that were double CD disks.

When i got home that night, my wife said "you sure know how to pick them, they were great".

I listened to two of them.....
The F word was used a lot of one CD.....
and the other one I hope they are paying Paul Simon for the "Sounds of Silence" lick on one of the songs..

Just like the race today....

Obama is about the future.....
Hillary is about the past......
To Obama Hater -

What are you implying?  Why don't you just say it outright?  I think we know what you meant, don't we?

Nice.
They must be smart, informed, and unbiased if they are supporting Obama....rather than Hillary, who is a flip-flopping, 3 illegal immigrant positions in 5-days, sending IT jobs to India, supporting the Iraq war, lies to the public, bashes Obama for knowing the same guy that she and bill were photographed with, etc, etc. ANY Republican will beat her....there is just way too much ugly dirt.
Obama-hater, I guess I could say I wasn't surprised when Hillary was endorsed by Margaret Thatcher...

Heaven forbid someone uses their -mind- to make a decision, regardless of their skin color or gender.

Bill Clinton's Old Politics

I write this more out of sadness than anger. Bill Clinton’s ill-tempered and ill-founded attacks on Barack Obama are doing no credit to the former President, his legacy, or his wife’s campaign. Nor are they helping the Democratic party. While it may be that all is fair in love, war, and politics, it’s not fair – indeed, it’s demeaning – for a former President to say things that are patently untrue (such as Obama’s anti-war position is a “fairy tale”) or to insinuate that Obama is injecting race into the race when the former President is himself doing it. Meanwhile, the attack ads being run in South Carolina by the Clinton camp which quote Obama as saying Republicans had all the ideas under Reagan, is disingenuous. For years, Bill Clinton and many other leading Democrats have made precisely the same point – that starting in the Reagan administration, Republicans put forth a range of new ideas while the Democrats sat on their hands. Many of these ideas were wrong-headed and dangerous, such as supply-side economics. But for too long Democrats failed counter with new ideas of their own; they wrongly assumed that the old Democratic positions and visions would be enough. Clinton’s 1992 campaign – indeed, the entire “New Democratic” message of the 1990s – was premised on the importance of taking back the initiative from the Republicans and offering Americans a new set of ideas and principles. Now, sadly, we’re witnessing a smear campaign against Obama that employs some of the worst aspects of the old politics.....'

Thank you, Robert Reich

What does the Democratic party stand for ?

NOT EVEN if Obama is VP......
The Clinton filth won't wash away....
Let me candid with baby boomers.  You have fought the same battles for 40 years, most of them for betterment of the country.  Look @ how much progress you have done by the color blindness, the gender equality and the morale decency for their fellow man of younger generations.

You have fought this battles with conviction and honor, but now it is time to move on and reach out.  America needs bipartisanship to get so much done in such a time of need and do you really feel Hillary Clinton can accomplish bipartisanship?  She can not, and truthfully its not her fault, but facts are facts.

America needs to unite and end this war.  America needs to reach across the aisle and find a comprehensive solution for Social Security.  America needs to rise above the squabbling of Washington and demand more from our politicians.  America needs the people to have a voice.  America needs a democracy, not a monarchy by 2 families.  America needs Barack Obama.
I would rather set my house on fire than elect ANOTHER two-faced disgusting liar of a politician.  Hillary Clinton makes me want to vomit.  The games must end.  Politics must change.  This is about America's -future-.  Things need to get done.  Hillary, IF she can even get elected, which after the garbage she's pulling now, will be VERY hard, Hillary will never get ANYTHING done, because she will polarize Washington and call people names and keep up this same garbage against the Republicans.

It REALLY has GOT to end.  I would even consider voting for Romney if the DNC really wants to press me.  I cannot vote for Clinton.  I have a feeling many Obama fans are starting to feel the same way.  In November, there will be Remember-the-Alamo-esque cries of a fallen hero if Obama does not win.
Lynette, NYC
America feels sorry for women who want to vote for somebody other than Hillary but who are told implicitly that "this is our time and we have to stand by our girl."
Lonny....sorry, but experience isn't genetic.  Youth can have hopes and dreams, but until they are old enough to have some experience under their belts, they will never know how to attain those hopes and dreams.  Experience is the one thing that the Obama lacks.  His youthful "life experiences" do not count.  Maybe he just should have waited until the time was right for him......like 8 years from now.
If this is truly a change election...then some things need to change and judging by the amount of coverage of black voter turnout, and who they support, and press covering it like it is 1963...some things never will change.  Go Obama....and Good Luck on Saturday.

In many ways this is not really that much about a "generational" disparity.

It is rather a matter of the "spread sheet," if you will.

Sometimes I "school" my younger colleagues that, while 60s-70s music was indeed commercial and made a lot of people rich, much of it was actually driven by passion and inspiration. (much of it sucked, too)

Too often, today's "hip" culture is cooked up in a corporate office by accountants and bean counters with a final "Do you think they'll buy this?" as the last word.

Much of contemporary popular culture is derivative, uninspiring (to anyone who has experienced something other than virtual reality), and replicates the "bardo of the hungry ghosts" riding in an elevator, listening to to spiked pablum with exciting (ooh... cool!) words that I know (and guess what? So does everybody else. Tres cool, huh?), but would rather not share with you right now.

Why not?

Because they (lyrics? music?) suck and are foisted upon suckers for fun and profit.

As Dilbert says, GAAAH!

By the way, since this is a political blog, I will add that the money dudes behind the "hip" culture?

The dudes who actually own this squat?

Bush Republicans and Clinton whores.

I can name names.

So your assignment today, students, is to "school" yourself on that.

We down m***** f***** ?

Marla the more i hear Obama talk and the more I see him campaign the less he represents what you're pushing. Money talks. We're not here to talk, we're here to win and defeat those who are keeping that system in place. Obama is here to talk- he's admitted it. I wont change your vote, but don't be surprised when I'm right.
It’s the electability, stupid.  Democrats, please pay attention: Hillary cannot win the general and that is the ONLY point worth putting out at this crucial moment of the primaries. Don't get distracted or side-tracked:  put every other piece of info, scrappy fight, comment by surrogates, squabble, newspaper article, blog, story and propaganda-filled speech aside.  Its not about race or gender or policies or change or experience.  You only need to know ONE piece of information to make your decision: no candidate can win a general election that is not supported by half of her own party.  Keep your eye on the 11/08 ball before it’s too late. She is the only thing that will rally the struggling Republican Party. Tell every Democrat and Independent you know: a vote for Hillary is a vote for John McCain, HIS war in Iraq and an economy that will not recover for a very long time.  Why does the DNC not recognize this?  We are running out of time to put an end to the eight, and I now fear 12, years of negative and never-endingly bad mojo and the moment to do something about it is right now.  So stop talking and go out and do something.  One simple first step?  Email The DNC and tell them how you feel about the way The Clintons are leading our party and running their campaign.  http://www.democrats.org/page/s/contactissues .  Pass it on.
Hillary's Connection to Antion Rezko..
See picture

The Clinton connection to Rezko is Hillraiser Myron Cherry. Cherry has Raised over $100,000 for Senator Clinton and her PAC.. Cherry also named in Rezko's indictment is being sued for his business (IPA) International Profit Associates swindling millions odf dollars from small businesses by violating the RICO statute. Even after being informed by numerous media organizations Clinton continued to maintain a relationship with her controversial bundler. In fact Mr. Cherry hosted a fundraiser for presidential candidate Clinton. (Just like Norman Hsu)

Of course there was a comment about the lying Clintons because of the picture with Obama's slum lord.  Well, guys, I have a picture sitting right here of myself with Hillary, but the Senator doesn't know me from Adam's housecat.  Politicians get their picture taken with lots of people.
I am definetly an Obama supporter. I love what he stands for and how he is trying to handle his campaign, but between the Clintons and the News Media you all are making it very difficult to even stand a chance no matter how much he should earn the Presidential Candidacy. Wake up! Isn't it about time to notice that it is 2008!
Marla, what do you think Hillary has been doing in the Senate for the past 6 years?????  Not one Senator has criticized her ability to work in a bipartisan way to get things done and several of the Republican senators, South Carolina's Lindsey Graham among them, have said she is the hardest working senator he knows and is smart and gets more done than anyone in the senate.  As Hillary said yesterday, she is not a show horse, she is a work horse.  America needs Hillary.  When they ask Obama a question in the debates, he does not answer the question, but spouts his answer he wanted to say to whatever they have asked, usually something like "while you were sitting on the Board at Walmart" which Hillary, to her credit, did not even reply to, but the later news stories on TV did and said she tried to bring change and did some to Walmart, but finally resigned because she could not bring enough change to such mindsets.  There are two surviving marchers from ML King's March still alive and they both endorse Hillary (Andrew Young and John Lewis).  What does that tell you??
Obama inspires the young generation (my generation) like no one that I can ever remember.

Hillary and Bill are trying to bring him down by lieing and distorting his record.

If they succeed, and Hillary is the nominee, there is NO WAY my generation will heard together like a bunch of cattle for Hillary after the Clinton's have destroyed our inspirational figure!!!

Just a fact...Obama is the only Democrat that can win in November!
I totally reject the idea that to win we have to stoop to the level of Rove and the RNC as the Clintons are doing. We have an unexpected and exciting alternative in Barack Obama, one which could marginalize the Roves instead of prolonging the fight. Are we really going to continue to subject the kids to more of the interminable culture wars born in the train wreck that was the late 60's? I think we've done about all the damage we can do and it's time to move on and look to the future.

Barack is running a gutsy general election unity campaign in a primary. If we're smart enough to give him the nomination, we open the way to a new working majority that can carry the Democratic Party into the future. That was Obama's point about Reagan, as the Clintons know very well. If we are myopic enough to nominate Hillary and she does manage to squeak out a win, then we're right back to the trench warfare of the late '90s.

Personally, I'm sick to death of the Rove/Clinton style of politics. I say let's go ahead and roll those dice Bill was talking about. We have a number of senators on both sides of the aisle who have been working closely with Barack Obama and clearly don't think he's a risk, since they have publically endorsed his candidacy. Should we really take Honest Bill's word on that? Or is letting him anywhere near the White House the really risky proposition for the Democratic Party?

Reich Was an ineffective sec of labor . He has been bashing the Clinton'for years. A month or two ago he was on meet the press and along with George Wills they bashed Hillary. I do not know the man's problem, may he would like to be sec. of something if Obman was lucky enough to win. Which I doubt. I refer all of you anti Hillary Republicans and Obama Hillary haters to the New York Times endorsement of Hillary Clinton. Its about qualification to be President.
If this is also a question as to who can rally the young people, then it might go to Obama; that is if he can get the younger people off their butts and into the polling stations.  If they can't do that to support Obama, then he is as dead in the water and Ron Paul (his supporters refuse to understand that he needs them to vote).
Reich ran in the last election and lost(cannot remember what he was running for)sour grapes now he hitches his star to Obama in case Obama wins---what will he do if Obama loses?Slink back into the woodwork.
Obama is a liar, a fake, a phoney and a fraud.
Thank you for your time, have a nice day.

"I say let's go ahead and roll those dice...with Barack Obama..."

Jaycee.....NO! Not by the air on my chiny, chin, chin!
I just turned 50 and I'm definately voting for Obama.  I really like his message and vision.  I don't care for all the smear tactics that the Billary campaign has taken as it seems they lack integrity. I'm also a Native American and I know a lot of our people are rooting for Obama.
OH, THAT'S RICH.  "O'BAMA GIRL" IS JUST THE KIND OF PERSON WE NEED IN ELECTING OUR NEXT PRESIDENT. SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT A CAUCUS WAS.  "HE TALKS GOOD" SHE AND HER FRIENDS SAY.  THERE WERE A HECK OF A LOT OF CLINTON BASHERS IN NEW YORK, GUYS, BUT WITH HER TREMENDOUSLY HARD WORK, SHE WON MOST OF THEM OVER AND WON BY A MUCH GREATER MARGIN FOR HER SECOND TERM.  DO YOU THINK NEW YORKERS ARE STUPID, NAIVE? THE REPUBLICAN CLINTON BASHERS HAVE TRIED FOR YEARS TO DO HER IN, BUT HILLARY IS STILL STANDING STRONG.  NOW THEY'VE GOT SOME LESS THAN ASTUTE DEMOCRATS BASHING HER RIGHT ALONG WITH THEM.  YOU'RE PLAYING RIGHT INTO THEIR HANDS, FOLKS AND BEING LED LIKE SHEEP.  THINK FOR YOURSELVES, AND STICK TOGETHER IN THE END OR WE'LL END UP WITH ONE OF THOSE LOSERS ON THE STAGE LAST NIGHT THAT ALL (EXCEPT RON PAUL) STATED THE WAR IN IRAQ WAS "A GOOD IDEA AND WORTH THE PRICE WE'VE PAID".  MY GOD, DO WE REALLY WANT THAT?
I'm sick of hearing about the big, bad Clinton's and their "smear campaign".  The "smearing" has gone both ways, just like in every campaign.  O'bama's hands certainly aren't clean...

EN. OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMED HILLARY SAID NAFTA WAS A 'BOON' TO THE ECONOMY LAST YEAR. At the last debate, Sen. Obama said "And it is absolutely true that NAFTA was a mistake. I know that Hillary on occasion has said -- just last year said this was a boon to the economy." Sen. Obama and his campaign have made the claim repeatedly, even though it is well established that she never said it. [Fact Hub]

THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN FALSELY CLAIMED THAT BILL CLINTON GAVE A PAID SPEECH ABROAD ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11. Actually, he was attending a 9/11 memorial service in New Jersey. [TPM Election Central]

SEN. OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMS HE 'NEVER SAID THAT WE SHOULD TRY TO GO AHEAD AND GET SINGLE PAYER' HEALTH CARE. There is video from a campaign appearance in 2003 that shows him doing just that. [WSJ; Fact Hub]

THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN FALSELY CLAIMED HILLARY HAD A 20 YEAR PLAN TO BECOME PRESIDENT. This is a widely discredited claim from an anti-Hillary book. [TPM Election Central]

SEN. OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMED THAT HE DOESN'T TAKE MONEY FROM SPECIAL INTERESTS. Obama told the Culinary Workers, "The time has come to tell all the fat cats and the special interests in Washington that their money and their influence don't speak louder than our collective voices. They don't own our government. We do, and we're here to take it back. Those special interests they didn't fund my campaign they will not run my White House and they will not drown out the voices of the American people, working people when I'm President of the United States of America." In fact, Sen. Obama has taken hundreds of thousands of dollars from insurance industry, the banking industry, and others. [CNN, 1/12/08; opensecrets.com]

OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMED THAT HILLARY SAID 'TOUGH AND DIRECT DIPLOMACY' WAS 'NAÏVE AND IRRESPONSIBLE.' Actually, Hillary said that she would not pre-commit to personal meetings with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea in the first year of her presidency. She also explicitly promised "a very vigorous diplomatic effort" with all nations, including Iraq. [Union Leader, 10/11/07; CNN/YouTube Debate, 7/23/07]

OBAMA CLAIMS 'NO ONE HAD AN INKLING' THAT REZKO HAD LEGAL AND ETHICAL TROUBLES DURING THE COURSE OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP. Actually, prior to his controversial land deals, prior to land deal, news reports clearly indicated Rezko's troubles, including involvement in kickback scheme. [Fact Hub]

SEN. OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMED THAT HILLARY AND BILL CLINTON SAID HE 'WASN'T OPPOSED TO THE WAR FROM THE START.' Neither Hillary or Bill Clinton has ever said that. They have noted his quotes and record after his speech opposing the war in 2002. [Fact Hub]

SEN. OBAMA CLAIMS HE HAS A 'UNIVERSAL' HEALTH CARE PLAN. Top health care experts agree that his plan leaves 15 million people out. [Fact Hub]

SEN. OBAMA DENIED THAT THE CO-CHAIR OF HIS NEW HAMPSHIRE CAMPAIGN WAS A PHARMACEUTICAL LOBBYIST. His New Hampshire co-chair, Jim Demers, was a pharmaceutical lobbyist. [The Page]

SEN. OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMED THAT HILLARY COULD ORDER THE RELEASE OF ALL HER WHITE HOUSE RECORDS. The process is actually controlled by the National Archives. [Fact Hub]

SEN. OBAMA FALSELY CLAIMED HE HAD NEVER DONE ANY FAVORS FOR REZKO. As a state senator, Barack Obama wrote letters to city and state officials supporting his political patron Tony Rezko's successful bid to get more than $14 million from taxpayers to build apartments for senior citizens. [Chicago Sun Times, 6/13/07]

GET REAL PEOPLE, IT'S POLITICS. AND ALWAYS GOES BOTH WAYS.  EDUCATE YOURSELVES ON THE ISSUES AND WHAT'S IMPORTANT. DON'T WEAR BLINDERS. AND STOP ALL THE WHINING!
Waaah wahh! Hillary didn't really win New Hampshire, Michigan, or Nevada. Let's all go cry in our milk. Please. The fact that these other 'lesser' candidates are still sticking around is almost laughable, if not considerably sad too.
MN mom, I knew she wouldn't let us down! More Hillary stuff!  BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, so fit to be tired!
Whatever you are selling, we are not buying, we have had 7 years of conflict-ridden behavior!
Again, by you shouting at us "in caps" is not winning us over; well let me speak for myself.
Gosh, the media really has you going if you think Hillary is the best thing since sliced bread.
Hahahahahahaha!
Brett-

I have no doubt you will be right, but take this to the bank, Hillary and Bill will destroy the democratic party for generations to come.  The younger generation are really not traditional democrats; they are entrepreneurial, social liberals and economic moderates.

This is a chance for the Democratic party to change for the better, give younger people a voice in politics and acually give the Democrats a chance @ the Whitehouse.

Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton will not win the whitehouse and will motivate the republicans and supress the democratic and independent leaning democrats so much that the math doesn't work.  So while money might win out in the primary, the future of the democratic party will be moving toward the center and more suspectible to republican ideology.

I am willing to bet anyone on here, that majority of Democrats for change will not show up and hold there noses any longer.

Your right, you will not change my vote in the primaries, but unfortunately, like many of my peers, our votes will be heard come November.
