From MSNBC's David Shuster
More than 500,000 votes were cast today in this Democratic primary...

That is higher than the 450,000 who voted last Saturday in the GOP South Carolina primary.  And the turnout today is up by 75% compared to the Democratic primary turnout in 2004...  That primary turnout was 290,000.

WOW! Could South Carolina vote Democratic this time? Talk about making some HISTORY!

Obama '08
YES!!!!!!

O BA MA!!! O BA MA!!!
The incredible, historic turn-out here and in other states should be the secondary headline (under "Obama Wins"), from the AP and on MSNBC's reprint of the AP's article. Americans' participation is *the* story of this primary election.

Instead, the AP/MSNBC secondary headline is: "half of electorate was black." That is, they tell us Obama wins, but as if to imply it was less than a full victory, they sub-headline it with something to the effect of "lots of black voters."

Shame on you. Shame!

Should half of the half-wits writing the news have forgotten, Obama is not only "black." His father is "black" -- from Kenya, remember -- and his mother is "white" -- from Kansas, if you couldn't remember that compelling story line -- that is, his father is "black" and his mother "white" if you *must* use the language of racial division at all. You might call Obama half-white, or you might call him half-black, or you just might do your not-so-small part to move this country forward: you might not call Obama "black" or "white." Can you imagine someone not being one race?

He was not the first black Editor of the Harvard Law Review, he is not the first viable black candidate for President. Can you imagine him as something more than black or white, as perhaps a brilliant and compelling leader, regardless of whether you agree with him or whether he wins, in the primary or the general election? Can you imagine him as a respected Senator and a great American, again regardless of you party affiliation?

If Obama, while running for the Democratic nomination, can stand up and say something to the effect of "Republicans have some good ideas..." if he is capable, even in the most partisan of times, capable of rising above partisanship, then surely we are capable of seeing him as more than simply "the black candidate." Surely we are capable of seeing the people and the voters of South Carolina as more than simply "half black."

I understand race and ethnicity mean a great deal to a great many people, but I simply cannot accept that we must label our candidates, or each other, black or white or any race whatever. Whatever you say or write and whatever Obama himself says, I cannot and will not see Obama as "the first viable black candidate." If he is elected, I will not refer to him as "the first black President."

If he wins it all, I will call him "my President." Sometimes I will call him "our President." In any event it is unlikely I will cringe as I do when referring to George W. Bush as such, and for that, I could not turn my calendars to November '08 and January '09 soon enough.

You heard Obama tonight; to paraphrase: this election is not about young versus old, or black versus white ... this election is about the past versus the future. Don't let the Clintons, the Republicans, or anyone tell you otherwise. Let this and every election be about the issues, positions, and qualifications; let this be about the candidates as leaders of our country -- not leaders of their parties -- and let this and every election be about our great future together.
Kudos to Barack Obama.  His victory over a former president (and his PUPPET) who carried the state in his previous runs is refreshing!  I only regret John Edwards did not beat Billary as well.  I am concerened by the number of people that want to give Clinton any more time in the White House.  I can testify that Bill did not do well by African-Americans and women during his 8 years.  I have no reason to believe he would be any better if we gave him another try through his surrogate.  Listen to Bill and there is NO doubt this is HIS campaign.  Bill is calling in his political debts right and left.  I think it is fair to point out that Hillary(Bill) is not what this country needs at this time.  There is no vision; no passion; no substance.  I hope Democratic Party moves forward.  'Back To The Future' is a movie not right for presidential politics.

My great-grandmother was known to say "Sometimes the unknown birds in the bushes realy are better than the one in your hand and you have to be willing to believe and take the chance."  I know Bill would say this is another 'fairy tale', but I'm here to tell him there's a lot of wisdom in those words.

I hope those voting Tsunami Tuesday swell up and wash the Clintons away.  This country needs vision and passion and unity.  Not divisiveness and race-baiting and stained blue desses from a dirty old man.

Barack Obama and John Edwards have character and deserve the support.  They talk of a future for all.  Bill(Hillary) talk about a return to a glorious past when they taught us the definition of 'is' and the futility of 'Stand By Your Man'.  I think this country is beyond the Clintons.
Yeah if African Americans turn out like they did here.  But when super tuesday comes and white voters get their voice (after seeing these results) Obama will not hold up.  He does not have any experience - just a brother on the pulpit. He on a ticket with Hillary as her VP would be a welcome democratic ticket. Then he could gain some experience and run again.
Nope, Nashville-fan, they won't vote Democratic no matter what the "pundits" or polls show

Obama's campaign has been about Rep and Indep becoming Dem for a day to vote for him.

They will go home to roost in the GE.

But give BO credit for appealing to Cousin Pookie and Uncle Jethro and turning out HIS BASE.
Nashville,

"Talk about making some HISTORY!"

You bet...to quote Obama..."They saaaaaaaaaaaaid.
They saaaaaaaaaaid.  They saaaaaid that this time would never come.   But on this January night, at this defining moment in history...."

Why does Barack drop into that FAKE southern drawl.  Trying to channel Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. perhaps and doing a very poor job of it I might add.

Dr. King was the real thing.  It was about helping us NOT all about him or having a giant ego like Barack.

But give BO credit for appealing to Cousin Pookie and Uncle Jethro and turning out HIS BASE.

Most would say, Aunt Sara & Uncle Mike came out in Iowa & voted for Barack. I would say he appeals to all of them. Go Figure, Clinton get's her support from less educated & it show's in thier post.

Barack Obama for President!!!!!!!
don't worry about the morons Rick. we know that we as a people are united and no amount of ignorance can stop us. White,Black,Asian,Latino, republican democrat doesn't matter the sleeping masses have been awakened and we will not sleep again.

some people see change coming down the street other's don't realize change has come until it's in their house cooking them dinner.
Independants are voting Democratic. The Republicans should be scared.
I see an obvious pattern between candidates and supporters. Bicker!!!  I hope to never hear another person critize the Democrats for that bicker.  If we all agree on the issues and their obvious logic then we should argue their exicution.  As My father has always said, "I can agree with anything but a republican."
but what was the racial make up of that half mill..was it the 50% black turnout that "you people" predicted.. I was predicting only a 40% of the total turn out will be presons of colour (a decline from recent years)
*Hugs Charmine from AL and Samuel*

Rough night, huh? :)

Obama '08
More people voted for Obama in the Dem primary than for McCain and Huckabee combined in the Republican primary. That doesn't mean S. Carolina is about to turn blue but it sure says a lot about which party's voters are more energized and who is doing the energizing.  GObama!
Well , Hang in the America. It won't be long now! The clinton's last week and this week finished cutting their throat! The Clinton's onlygot 24% of the white vote! and the next stop of will dwindle even more,

Mrs. Washington self serving paper hanger took a real ass whipping and even her spouse was reamed out by T,Kennedy! Who told him in no small words to STFU!

The Clinton's are all washed up, they can pack it up and go back to their white  trailer trash camp. Some how the two skunks got tripped up by their spinning crew and let the race card get out of control. You see  no begot can keep their mouth shut for ever! and the Clinton's are true bigots in skunk skins!
Brian, I really cried when i read your comments. you are absolutely right. You hit the nail on the head.....keep it up...
I read a book by Shelby Steele "A Bound Man", that was what convinced me to support Obama.  I discovered in that process that what a good leader is, is someone who allows others to reach deeper into ourselves than even we thought possible in order to achieve things we thought impossible.  I believe that great leaders are there, not to do things for us but to inspire us to get things done, when and where we think such things are out of reach.  That is where JFK and Obama are alike.  I have no doubt of Hillary's competence and I love Edwards' passion, but the country will follow Obama's lead to places we thought we'd never get.  Also remember that the Presidency of the United States is not a one man endeavor.  The President heads the Executive and must lead a cabinet and work with Congress to move the nation torwards his vision of America.  Which of the candidates' visions do you want for this country? Caroline's answer seems to be Obama's.
PS Can you imagine the inaugural and the State of the Union addresses?
you know whut's so crazy? the votes for obama smashed the ENTIRE '04 290,000 mark alone!!!!!

Because of the high turnout, the GOP will be in overdrive to subvert minority voters.
one Question please, can a white man now vote for a white man and not feel they are either a racist or a mysoginist?
This is a valid qustion, I am not being diengenuous.
The simple truth is that Barack Obama has brought more enthusiasm to the old folks home that represents the democratic party of yesteryear than could have ever been imagined or hoped for by the democratic party faithful in the ranks, but is viewed with growing unease by those "chip holders" in the great game of Washington insidership.
For those of you trying to spin Obama as a black candidate that cannot win among whites I refer you to Iowa, rural New Hampshire, Elko County and the rest of rural Nevada and of course to all but 5 counties in South Carolina where Obama polled 60%.  Especially in rural white counties.
Obama is the real deal. The Clinton's are as real as a  single wide trailer.  And are just as sturdy.
The Clinton's will keep on keepin' on because it is their nature.
They know, given their instincts that the end draws near.
Time to see if they can go out with more class than they have shown these past few weeks as Davos Bill (to coin a phrase used by the Financial Times of London) has morphed into Shoney's Bill.
The Clinton's and much of the old line democratic party establishment is so... Yesterday.
Obama is the future.
Indeed.
OBAMA SHOWED THAT CLINTON MACHINE HOW TO POLITIC
McClatchy/MSNBC poll just before election which said Obama's getting only 10% white votes is a total fake to play down expectations game for obama. Now MSNBC go on saying he got more than expected. Please, 76% whites voted against Obama.
I guess msnbc is so happy, they are so for obama, especially the joe morning show.I don't know what the big deal is,SC is mostly black they expected this to happen. What I don't understand it's mostly black but the state goes republican,go figure that one out.
Doesn't have experience? Are you people serious????? I am from Illinois , where Hillary was born ad raised but has little support, and I know better. Obama has 12 YEARS in elected office and Hillary has only 8. So it is a LIE that she has more political experience. Or maybe wd should let the husband of a brain surgeon perform brain surgery based on his "experience".

What a joke!! How about the fact that Hillary and camp accuse Obama of being close to a shady real estate developer? HAVE THEY FORGOTTEN WHITEWATER ?????  All the Clinton associates and friends and business PARTNERS who were indicted, convicted, imprisoned, pled the  5th and fled the country due to their participation in one scandal or another??
Whitewater =19 criminal charges and 8 convictions
Other Clinton scandals= 55 criminal charges 32 convictions
total=64 criminal charges and 40 convictions in Clinoton scandals
Who is she accusing of being corrupt or dishonest?

Give me a break !!
For those who say Obama only won , by 150,000 votes no less, because he is Black is forgetting that his mother is White. They are also ignoring the fact that he won Iowa ,97% White, only lost by 3 and 4% in Nevad and New Hampshire is 98% White and that he got a quarter of the White vote in the SOUTH in a 3way race.

Why not forget what race he is or isn't and focus on the one race that really matters, the race for the nomination?
