Morrison endorses Obama

Posted: Monday, January 28, 2008 10:18 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Author Toni Morrison, who famously labeled Bill Clinton "the first black president," has endorsed Obama. In a letter to the senator, she writes, "In thinking carefully about the strengths of the candidates, I stunned myself when I came to the following conclusion: that in addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates. That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom."

Here's her full endorsement letter:

Dear Senator Obama,
This letter represents a first for me--a public endorsement of a Presidential candidate. I feel driven to let you know why I am writing it. One reason is it may help gather other supporters; another is that this is one of those singular moments that nations ignore at their peril. I will not rehearse the multiple crises facing us, but of one thing I am certain: this opportunity for a national evolution (even revolution) will not come again soon, and I am convinced you are the person to capture it.

May I describe to you my thoughts?

I have admired Senator Clinton for years.  Her knowledge always seemed to me exhaustive; her negotiation of politics expert. However I am more compelled by the quality of mind (as far as I can measure it) of a candidate.  I cared little for her gender as a source of my admiration, and the little I did care was based on the fact that no liberal woman has ever ruled in America.  Only conservative or "new-centrist" ones are allowed into that realm. Nor do I care very much for your race[s]. I would not support you if that was all you had to offer or because it might make me "proud."

In thinking carefully about the strengths of the candidates, I stunned myself when I came to the following conclusion: that in addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates.  That something is a creative imagination which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom. It is too bad if we associate it only with gray hair and old age. Or if we call searing vision naivete. Or if we believe cunning is insight. Or if we settle for finessing cures tailored for each ravaged tree in the forest while ignoring the poisonous landscape that feeds and surrounds it. Wisdom is a gift; you can't train for it, inherit it, learn it in a class, or earn it in the workplace--that access can foster the acquisition of knowledge, but not wisdom.

When, I wondered, was the last time this country was guided by such a leader?  Someone whose moral center was un-embargoed?  Someone with courage instead of mere ambition?  Someone who truly thinks of his country's citizens as "we," not "they"?  Someone who understands what it will take to help America realize the virtues it fancies about itself, what it desperately needs to become in the world?

Our future is ripe, outrageously rich in its possibilities. Yet unleashing the glory of that future will require a difficult labor, and some may be so frightened of its birth they will refuse to abandon their nostalgia for the womb.

There have been a few prescient leaders in our past, but you are the man for this time.

Good luck to you and to us.

Toni Morrison

Wow...I love it!
So now Toni Morrison gets a full article endorsing Obama and the Gov. of PA and the Calfornia farmers endorsements got two lines for Hillary.  Shameless reporting from MSNBC.
Another slap in the face of the Clintons...lol... I wonder how Bill Clinton feels about this endorsement. Billary Clinton is probably going to get mad.

Is Van and Carrie still on this board? Van, what’s up in NY?
Wow . . . that is one powerful letter from one powerful lady!

Obama '08
WOW  - now that SC is behind us  - the supporters come out of the woodwork.  Did she "recall"  her blessing on Bill???
Beautiful....
What a beautiful letter... I hope people take the time to read it in full and maybe begin to understand what Sen. Obama represents to us (his supporters).  I live in Georgia, where being a liberal is far from cool and supporting a biracial man for president is even less cool.  But I proudly support Sen. Obama, even if it does cause "problems" for me in the process.  It's time for our country to move forward instead of backwards and this is the candidate that can and will make that happen.
And not only that, but the guy is super hot!!
Precisely right.  Toni Morrison said exactly what I have felt in my bones for so long.  I do not worry about a Clinton presidency.  But I long for an Obama revolution.

This must be what it felt like to my parents when JFK was around.
I forgot to mention the paper of record in this country, the NY Times also endorsed Clinton and MSNBC did not even mention it last week.  Let's talk bias reporting.  Toni Morrison gets a full page article on her endorsing Obama, but the NY Times doesn't get anything?  Really?  That's interesting.  I'm pretty sure 15% of the people know who Toni Morrison is, but I bet 100% of the people know the NY Times.  That's all I'm saying.
Let's not confuse age and experience with wisdom and good judgment.  None of us have to look very far in our own lives to see that they don't automatically go together.  And just look at the collective experience and 'expertise' of the think tank wonders and politicians on both sides of the aisle that got us into this mess in Iraq.

Nothing wrong with being both young and wise.  It happens.  Maybe not as often as old and stupid like me, but it does come along once in awhile.  Are we smart enough to recognize it when it comes our way?
God Bless America and Toni Morrison!
Another Afro-American endorsing Obama.  Wow, I don't believe that!  Gee with only 4 of 5 Blacks backing someone of their own race that one caught me by surprise.
When is First Read giving their offical endorsement to Obama?
A powerful endorsement. Kudos to Ms. Morrison!
'...keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender...'

integrity, Obama hands down
Authenticity, Obama again

THANK YOU, Toni Morrison

Bill Clinton had 'feet of clay'......
Amen Toni Morrison.

Yes We Can, Obama '08
'...Voters in South Carolina tonight rejected the
politics of the gutter. Obama's big win--by far the
largest of any contest thus far--gives the candidate
an opportunity to get back to his core message of
inclusiveness and unity...'

From the Nation.com:

REPUDIATING THE CLINTONS...

South Carolina was billed
as the "first black primary" by this magazine and many
others. That it was, and Obama won a commanding
advantage among the core of the Democratic Party in
his runaway victory tonight, greatly boosting his
fortunes going into Super Tuesday.

But South Carolina was more than that. It was also a
referendum on the campaign conduct of the Clintons
over the past few weeks, particularly the bizarre
behavior of President Clinton. The Clintons and their
surrogates injected race into the campaign and then
disingenuously pretended otherwise, courting the
African-American vote while also appealing to voters
less charitable instincts, prompting fears that Bill
Clinton in particular was content to tear the
Democratic Party apart as long as his wife was the
beneficiary.

"The electorate seems more polarized now than it was
just a few weeks ago, and the Clintons have seemed
positively gleeful in that atmosphere," New York Times
columnist Bob Herbert wrote today. "It makes one
wonder whether they have any understanding or regard
for the corrosive long-term effects -- on their party
and the nation -- of pitting people bitterly and
unnecessarily against one another."

The Clintons tried to spin a loss here as the
inevitable product of Obama's popularity among
African-Americans. But not too long ago this race in
South Carolina was a deadheat. It's hard to spin a
twenty point loss, especially when the outcome has
broader significance.

Voters in South Carolina tonight rejected the politics
of the gutter. Obama's big win--by far the largest of
any contest thus far--gives the candidate an
opportunity to get back to his core message of
inclusiveness and unity. If he's going to prevail in
the long haul, he will do so by appealing to voters
better instincts. The Clintons, after South Carolina,
must realize they will have to as well...'

Wonderful endorsement but lost in the noise of the last two days is even bigger news:

Karl Rove to Endorse Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

In a surprising move today, Karl Rove announced that he will be throwing his support behind the establishment candidacy of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, the junior Senator from the State of New York.

“While we have historically been members of competing political parties,” Mr. Rove noted, “I have been extremely impressed by how clever Senator Clinton and her husband have been in adopting many of the strategies that I developed and perfected during my career of putting Republicans into office.”

“They used to say the ends justify the means,” continued Mr. Rove.  “I’m turning that on it’s head.  I say, “if someone believes in your means, they probably share at least some of your ends.”  That’s good enough for me.  Besides, she voted for the war in Iraq and also gave us precisely what we wanted in the Iran vote so I think she’ll be a terrific addition to the Grand Old Party after the election.””

Political observers who were contacted noted that while the move was surprising on its face, Senator Clinton has talked widely about her candidacy for change.  “What better way to prove she’s a change agent than to bring the boogie man of the George Bush Administration over to her side,” said Jim Tussert of CN-NBC.  “That’s quite a coup.”

Ok ladies, start shredding Toni Morrison...
Toni will need at least a drive-in sized screen for such a large projection.
Wow.  For anyone who forgot, that woman can really write.

Of course here's what we'll hear from the haters:  it's just more rhetoric...
Gresham (better and more famous author)has endorsed Hillary Clinton.Did anybody know that?Didn't think so
That was beautiful.

OBAMA FOR THE FUTURE!
Race doesn't matter......
Toni Morrison's message is from the heart, and in my opinion, a true comprehension of Sen. Obama's qualities and vision for America.  We need a "real" leader who we can trust, and inspire the World once again to admire the United States as the greatest freedom loving nation on earth.  Sen. Obama is the "inspiration" candidate hands down.  We need him now.
Its official. Bill Clinton is now only just another white president.
I couldn't have summed it up better myself!!
Thanks Toni, you have risen above your previous quote about the first black president, What we have in Obama is the first candidate for president that because of his unique D&A he has something to offer all people and he and his wonderful family are willing to share that great wisdom with all of america.
Has Alexi Giannoulias officially endorsed Obama yet?

Now that would be NEWS!

The Sun Times thinks Giannoulias and Obama are news:

We are going to need this and many more like it. If you feel this way write it down, scream it out,and if you dont do anything let others know that we need a brighter direction to travel.Let others know that Obama not anyone else is going to bring with them that hope for light and that doing the same thing expecting different results is insanity.
I also have admired Hillary Clinton...but not lately.  I would like to tell the entire country full of women out there.....There are a lot of other women in the Democratic Party that would also make great presidents.  Barbara Boxer comes to mind for me.  I am not sold on Hillary Clinton because she is a woman...I am not sold on Hillary Clinton because she comes with Bill...and having watched this insanity with Bill (her new Campaign Manager) all unfold in the Press, I truly believe that he wants it more than she does.
Fantastic. I agree wholehearteddly Ms. Morrison, I agree!
Wow.  Billary, you've been dumped.  Congrats on this fine achievement.
Toni's words were eloquent and profound. Full of imagery and grace. This is more reminiscient of the writing she is so well-known for as opposed to the brash, candid statements she made regarding Bill Clinton in the past as "the first black President."
I heard that Joe Shmoe from idaho has endorsed Obama as well. Who cares right? exactly. Why is this news?? Its not,but five minutes cant go by without a rah rah for Obama..  Its sickening.
Intelligent woman.
Bravo! Toni Morrison. You have written it so brilliantly for us who feel the same way but are unable to express it so vividly. It is time, the urgency of it now; as if the guy upstairs is setting the stage and fitting the puzzles in place for Mr. Obama's victory.
Thank you!
So exquisitely written - many of us are not blessed with such ability, yet I know Ms. Morrison has expressed so very eloquently what so many of us think and feel and hope for.
As a 64 year old white women, "coming of age" mentally, physically, and emotionally in the 60's Toni Morrison's letter to Barack Obama made me cry and want to shout it on the mountain top and all over the land that "YES WE CAN!"
WoW!
Beautifully written and absolutely accurate!
A very beautiful and moving written passage.  I'm in agreement with the author on Sen. Obama, he is fresh, open honest and trully believes in the word "us".  I'm a registered rebublican here in Michigan and in November I will be voting for the only candidate that has our freedoms in his heart...our next president...the honorable Sen. Obama.  Thank you for listening.
Great letter
Is'nt it so ironic that when people talk of Obama, there is a sense of hard scrutiny that led to a confident conclusion. I feel exactly as Toni does. The sad thing is that we do not even have any potential protege coming up soon. I feel this is the greatest test of our democracy. Think about it, how would it feel if we eventually try to get him to run for president again because we made a mistake. I mean he would be demoralized...i would. We would have publicly rejected change. Yes some people want a woman president but Hillary has said she intends to be just another president and i beleive which aslo means that if she fulfils that promise not to be the "female president" then what we have is just the same old thing, same practice and same rethoric. But the flip side is not just alternative but an opportunity which may never come again. We should carefully scrutinize all of the candidates and take in consideration what will be in the best interest of our country right now. I wish us all well.
I'm glad that Morrison is able to see what Obama's candidacy means to America. The younger voters get it, now it seems our elders are beginning to believe in these possibilities.

Obama, just like Clinton is qualified to be the president. But America needs change. IMHO, Obama is the candidate to bring about this transformation and  restore America to greatness.
Well Guys its all over the internet and T.V. right now at this exact moment about Tony Rezco being arrested early this morning for transferring money out of the country while he is indicted on corruption charges.
The Chicago Tribune is reporting this and also a lot of information is in the article about Rezco's ties to Obama - I think this will just about do Obama in.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-rezko-arrested_webjan29,0,2320595.story-
Like I said Tony, Slumlord Inner City Rezco and
Teddy, Chappaquidick, Kennedy, What a pair of powerful endorsements to totally take Obama down.
I can't wait for that to happen.
I have been trying to put into words why I feel Obama is the right person to lead this nation for the next 8 years. That "it" factor - I can't quite explain or understand why I feel so strongly that this is a moment America cannot afford to let slip by. Ms. Morrison in her eloquence has just described what I have been trying to put together in my own mind and in my discussions with fellow Americans. Look at the poignancy, the passion, the emotional tone of these endorsements - Morrisson, Kennedy, etc. Endorsements for Clinton all carry the air of practicality - "she has experience," void of passion. Great leaders aren't ordained by their prior experience, great leaders lead in the present, the now, they lead in the moment. History speaks to that - Lincoln, Kennedy, etc. We need a President who can inspire Americans and indeed the world to come together and propel us forward, with what Ms. Morrison so accurately describes as Sen. Barack Obama's "wisdom." He represents that Presidential possibility that Americans have been dreaming of, someone who can truly bring the country together and repair the broad and deep damage that has been done not only politically and internationally, but domestically. It's time for this country to quickly repair that damage and start playing catch up with the rest of the world. It's going to take all of us to make it happen. And I believe Sen. Obama is the only candidate who fully understands that and he is the only one who can lead us there.
As a foreigner, i am moved by such a cadre of support for Barack Obama. I was very adamant of his chances of the democratic presidential candidate, and even though such influential endorments have emerged, i still harbour doubts of his triumph in this campaign.
However, it would be interesting to see the outcome of this race particularly between senators Clinton, and Obama, and regardless who wins, the history of this event would be written as one of the greatest events to have occurred in this century, and who knows probably beyond.
And its not because your black its something undefinable I Its women coming to their senses and accepting the fact a womens place is behind a man a black man white man whatever just a man .EVEN WOMEN KNOW THIS THATS WHY  mica has such a crush on him and the kennedys they know about hope like mary jo and chapiqudik or jfk sleeping with mob hookers and marylyn monroe,Starting VIETNAM ahh yes I remember it well, maybe the kennedys can steal the election in baracks hometown chicago like the old days 1960
Everday on this site somebody claims they are crying over speeches and letters by Obama and for Obama. How many tears do you shed when everyday there are military men and women being blown up and killed all for the lies of their neocon lying treasonous guy in the oval office? You have put the economy on top of this illegal war---shame on all of you.Just keep shedding your tears for a politician  ----we will remember
