McCain calls Romney a flip-flopper

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- McCain held a roundtable on national security this morning with several of his biggest supporters and surrogates. Held at Atlantic Marine, which builds both commercial and naval vessels, the event included two senators, a former CIA director, a FBI-agent-turned-southern-governor, a past head of the VA Administration and a former POW who was held in Hanoi with McCain.

For almost an hour, the panel took turns describing the threats of terrorism in general and 'radical Islamic extremism' in particular, with an emphasis on why McCain's experience makes him the best candidate to handle the challenges that lie ahead. Although not exactly an unbiased panel, the clear point was to take another step towards shifting the debate in Florida -- home to roughly 2 million veterans -- back towards defense and military preparedness

But McCain couldn't get away from what has become a heated back-and-forth with Mitt Romney over the economy and the candidates' respective conservative records. Speaking to reporters after the roundtable, McCain responded to Romney's attacks from earlier this morning that likened the senator to a liberal Democrat.

"One thing I think we should really give Governor Romney credit for -- he is consistent," McCain said. "He has consistently taken both sides of any major issue. He has consistently flip-flopped on every issue…

"As the liberal governor of the state of Massachusetts, he raised taxes by 730 million dollars, the state is now stuck with a quarter billion dollar debt over government-mandated health system. When he was governor, they had the third or fourth worst economy of any state in America, and the manufacturing jobs left this country at 7%. They left Massachusetts at 14%…As the head of his investment company, he presided over companies that immediately laid off thousands of workers."

McCain also defended his environmental reform legislation, co-sponsored by Joe Lieberman, which Romney alleged would cost the average family of four $1,000 per year on oil and natural gas.

"If he thinks that the American economy will suffer by us cleaning up the environment, by us reducing pollution, by us embracing green technologies, including nuclear power, then we just have a profound difference of opinion," McCain said, pointing out that his legislation would encourage the proliferation of green technology. "People want consistency, people want you not to take two positions- at least- on every issue."

Romney being a flip-flopper means he's wrong half the time. McCain, not being a flip-flopper, means he is wrong all of the time.
Sorry McCain, but you have no wiggle room to accuse someone else of flip-flopping.  You were against tax breaks before you were for them.  You were against campaign finance reform before you were for it.  You were against cap and trade before you were for it.  Make up your mind!!!

Oh, and you've been passing bills that directly affect the economy and yet come out and say that you have little idea how it works???  No thanks!
It's nice to see that the repukes are finally attacking each other...
McCain, you even flip-flop on which party you belong too.  Choose one and go with it!  But don't try to pass yourself off as a Conservative in this race when we all know how you've voted.
Mitt Romney is a phony panderer. He is someone who thinks he can buy the republican nomination with his wealth. He governored as a liberal Governor in Massachusetts, where he once said he wanted to be to the left of Ted Kennedy. All of the sudden, he is a conservative? I would rather vote for someone who I dont agree with, but is honest and stands up for what he believes.

ROFL! Good one!
McCain says "People want consistency. . ."  With McCain America  get Washington establishment "consistency."  Poor judgment "consistency."  Undermining Republican conservative judge appointment "consistency."  Lack of Economic understanding "consistency."  Compromise on core Republican issues "consistency."  With McCain America get a "consistency” between the democratic and republican choice.  John McKennedy, constant in our Washington problems.
Like Obama, McCain gets a free ride from the press.  I wonder who the press will shill for if it's Obama vs. McCain?  I have heard some crazy things come out of McCain's mouth and the media just ignores it.  I will say he probably is right about Romney, but I haven't seen a negative article on McCain for 4 months.  I see one daily against Romney.  MSNBC is just carrying the water for Obama and McCain and anyone who says anything against them are either racist or they discriminating against age.
He is dead right, though, about his environmental policy.  Romney may want to rape the earth to keep gas prices at $3/gallon, but that kind of policy will only keep us headed towards a major energy crisis.
How about McCain having a former mexican government official on his payroll sheck out  http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YmI4OGJhMjE2Y2ZkYzU5ODNiNGQ3ZTE1MjJiY2EwZTg=&w=MA==
McCain has flipped on tax cuts, amnesty, his first wife and he also stated we must have benchmarks for the Iraqi government but now want to be in Iraqi for 100 years.
Jared- exactly.  McCain is just as much or more of a flip flopper than Romney. Plus, Romney admits openly the changes he's made and his reasons for it.  McCain denies, denies, denies.  He only ever admitted his change on immigration because he got hounded for the disaster that his previous stance was.

He lied to Tim Russert on the debate last week about his weakness on the economy- what he's said is documented, so the lie was obvious. (BTW, he also lied about his standing with Republicans in the polls- with whom he LOST in both NH and SC).

How many times have we heard him say that he is the straight talk express and that he thinks negative campaigning is wrong-- and now he's lying and twisting the truth and being the most negative and dirty campaigner of them all!!

BTW- Romney didn't raise ANY taxes in Mass.  He raised fees that hadn't been changed in a decade.  Fees are something people only have to pay once in awhile (like the cost to renew your driver's license- once every 10 years or so, big deal!).  Taxes are daily.  Come on people. learn the difference.

McCain is desperate as he sees his lead shrink.  He may still win the nomination, but a lot of republicans and even independents will think twice before supporting someone with such a short fuse.

Personally, if he's the nominee I'll vote for a democrat (one that actually say's he's a democrat).

I do not understand why anyone would support any of them.  My thing is the war, we weren't supposed to be there in the first place, so they say we need to cut back on spending, but they want to continue to spend 9 billion a month in Iraq. Countless troops are being killed each day and people are supporting this?
McCain is a warmonger, although, very patriotic, got it, what part of no more Iraq war don't he get?  If he and they are so patriotic, why don't he and the repuke party pick up gear to go fight in Iraq, because we have had enough.
I'll remember them the next time I run over a pot hole in the street, because we don't have money to fix it, or pay our teachers, buy supplies for our children to learn, have programs to support the youth in this country, because there are no funds due to the IRAQ war.  If people are running to the democratic party in numbers, maybe the repukes would wake up, they can't, because they are sleep walking.
Whatever!  What a joke!

McCain has been wanting the White House for soooo long!  He is desperate! Did you watch Meet the Press?  It was obvious the man was so inconsistent  on many issues!!!
WHERE IS THE MEDIA COVERAGE AND OUTRAGE FOR ALL THE NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING THAT Mc"CANE" IS DOING?  JUST A MONTH AGO HE SAID HE WOULD NEVER RESORT TO ATTACK ADS...NOW BECAUSE ROMNEY IS CLIMBING IN THE POLLS HE TELLS BOLD FACED LIES TO THE MEDIS EGARDING ROMNEY SUPPORTING AN EARLY WITHDRAWL FROM IRAQ?  ONCE AGAIN Mc"CANE" IS DOING ALL HE CAN TO DISRUPT AND REMOVE TRUE CONSERVATIVES FROM THIS RACE.  Mc"CANE" IS NOT REPUBLICAN!!! HE IS A MODERATE DEMOCRAT POSING IN THIS PARTY BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE COULD NOT BEET CLINTO OR OBAMA ON THE DEMORATIC TICKET.

BE VERY AFRAID OF Mc"CANE"
John McCain, you are showing the American people your true colors. I lost all respect for you. I liked you better before you ran for President. I'm sorry you don't represent the Republican Party's values. You are a man that I can't trust.
Kudos to L Lynwood of Az. and to all of those who believe McCain is the real flip-flopper.  I respect and appreciate him as a real hero and a patriotic American.  I don't like the name-calling, whiny attitude he has toward someone who is giving him a run for his money.  And he SHOULD apologize to Gov Romney for the "cranky" (wouldn't expect anything less) comments...
Peripheral noise.
The future is speaking right now at American University.
HAHA.
John McCain is the only chance the Repugs have to retain the White House. And this only IF Billary wins the Dem primary.
George Allen & Condi!!!!
There was one Willard Romney when he ran for senator here, another when he ran for governor, now yet another one running for president.  He supports one position, no wait, now he doesn't.  Will the real Willard "Mitt" Romney please stand up?  But which one it is, you'll never know!  We certainly don't know in Mass. and he purportedly governed here.
"For almost an hour, the panel took turns describing the threats of terrorism in general and 'radical Islamic extremism' in particular, with an emphasis on why McCain's experience makes him the best candidate to handle the challenges that lie ahead."

Any bets on when we'll see an ad similar to the "Daisy" ad against Goldwater?
I heard something troubling this morning. A woman called rush and said she knew people were voting for Mac because the national polls are saying he is the one who can beat Hillary!
Can anyone know at this point who will win the kentucky derby in May? Can anyone know who will be the world series champ in Oct.???Please people...there is a long way to go..DONT BE SHORT-SIGHTED!!! Dont let the media tell you the future!!
This guy will not and can not beat either democrat..they will shred him!!
He is old, cranky, a war monger...just a few of the terms they will use....
If you wont vote Romney(the right choice) at least dont vote McCain't.!!!
Only one comment:nice try JOHNNY RED!
I find it sickening that MSNBC along with the rest of the media gives McCain all the time in the world to distort, attack, lie, and spew his venom while Romney is not given equal time!! This is unacceptable journalism!!
Mitt Romney can not be trusted.  He will say anything and pay anything to win.  Just look at the debate, Romney cheated.  Do you want someone dishonest and deceptive as our president?  Don't believe me?  Look at these 3 videos of the Florida debate and tell me Romney did not cheat.  There is no denying it.

WE NEED HUCK=============A CHANGE FOR OUR PARTY LIKE OBAMA IS FOR THE DEMS   FAIR TAX MAN  I HATE THE IRS
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2008/01/27/as_bain_slashed_jobs_romney_stayed_to_side/

Follow that link to read all about how Mitt has a history of "turning companies around" The reality is that he flips them. Buy them cheap fire the workers cook the books and sell them off. Bain is a pump and dump company. Vote for him and kiss your job goodbye.
THE ARMY CAN HANDLE THE TERROSISTS=====HUCKABEE CAN HANDLE THE ECONOMY   I WANT THE FAIR TAX==I WANT DRUG DEALERS, PROSTITUES, CRIMINALS PAY TAXES
I'm tired of hearing McCain is good on the war.  This is garbage and we all know it.  70% of americans want out of the war in Iraq.  That doesn't mean 70% want to pack up and go, but it does mean they want to see end in sight.  Mitt gave a speach about a year ago in which he states he is for Private Time Tables and goals).  Mccain choose to say he supports Time tables and compared him to Hillary.  Bottom Line - We America wants A leader that demands goals including time tables.  We don't want our enemies to know what we plan or are capable of doing (waterboarding...) McCain is an easy target - He'd keep us in a war for 100 years if it was up to him, no goals, no time tables, and no plan for success - just with hopes that death toles gradually decline.  McCain is a Democrat on nearly every issue except for the WAR - I would gladly vote for Hillary or Barak over McCain not so straight talk
New Rasmussen poll has Romney up 15% over McCain nationaly with conservatives.  The more people get to know Romney, the better he does.
Florida Vote Romney!
I don't understand why people think it is a bad thing that Mitt Romney has so much money?  Personally, I think Mitt Romney would do a great job running the country.  Mitt understands how to run a business and has an extensive knowledge of economics.  I really believe he would do wonders for our economy.  If Mitt is elected president he will be able to trim the fat and get the economy rolling again.
Look Guys,I'm leaning towards McCain because,He's the Only guy I think can win the war in Iraq,I'm sick of the government fighting back & forth{The Right & The Left}He's worked with both sides.Maybe Just Maybe the Government will work together for a change. As Far as immagration,Has anyone really inked out a relistic plan? This is a guy who I really think can bring America together.Go McCain!!!
I will not vote in this election if McCain is the nominee. I will sit it out and I have NEVER donew that.
Keep pushing for that 3rd bush term johhny boy...this nation, well the 2/3 with brains thinks a 3rd bush term is the last thing we need.
Come on people, McCain has turned his attack dogs on Mitt Romney, Romney only responds negatively when he is attacked. On the military front McCain is a favorable candidate, on economics iis is hands down Romney. Romney according to the Datmar Poll leads McCain 36% to 27%. We need to stop letting big media bias elect our president. I do respect the media, however when did we give media the right to elect our President?
Well, you got mitt the flip floppin phony, and you got gasbag mccain, the war and fearmongering old fool who really doesn't know much about anything outside of Washington pandering politics. Great choices. Then you have Ron Paul-the only honest person running.
Uh, wasn't "Willard" the name of that guy who had loyal rats (Ben, etc) doing his dirty work in those horrible '70 movies? I see that "Willard" has his share of "Bens" on this site. I would not vote for any of these Repulican rodants if I got one of their targeted tax breaks!
Mccain is making a huge mistake by going negative. It rarely works. It's what has hurt the DEMS when they went ballistic there for a bit. Alot of voters decided to NOT vote.
It also helped Huckabee. Even though he was the real instigator behind it. It is like when we were kids playing ball and get hacked by the opponent. You get the foul for retaliation because the ref didn't see the first one.

Happens in politics too. gotta know when to do a cheap shot and when to layoff. huckabee apologized for his sleazy remark and look what it did for him in IOWA.
Mccain should take some lessons.

AS far as flip flopping...all politicians do it. That is called change.
You want CHANGE?
As long as it is for the right cause. YES!

Romney certainly changes and with purpose in mind. it is what you have to do if you want to bring change to washington.
MCCAIN has proven he is a DEM not a GOP

Never cared for his type of politics.

George Allen & Condi!!!!

*****************************************************

You have got to be kidding me. Are you guys that desperate? Well.....yes...... after all you guys did seriously consider running Fred Thompson, Rudy Giuliani, Mike Hillbilly and now Romney for president. A party of stooges.
I am a Desert Storm Veteran and I like John McCain but, I think he is not the best person to tackle the most important issue in our country right now and that is the economy. I'm sorry John....
McCancer is about an hour away from another bout of skin cancer, if not age related death. I can't believe how the press went after Romney for "going negative" in Iowa, though he only highlighted policy differences, yet they let McCancer LIE. People, Romney might seem stiff, but, and I mean this, he's honest. He's running for a federal position this time, not state, and his views should be different. It's one thing to allow that the majority of Mass. residents want all kinds of abortion options. It's another to try to force them down the throats of the people of every state. McCancer is trying to terrify Republicans into thinking that Romney wouldn't be able to protect us. Let's see, McCancer got to be a pilot despite graduating at the bottom of his class (because his daddy was a big whig). Oh, and he's the one that got shot down and beat for years. Yep, sounds like he knows how to run an effective military. Oh, and I think that the man on the street knows that punishing the US economy under the guise of being Green is just another way to say "GO CHINA". Florida, please, vote for Romney!
I can see it now...Just the names have been changed...
Bob Dole=McCain the stale old military guy..its his turn, he earned it, war hero... blah blah
Clinton=obama slick good looking charming..new!!!
Guess who wins???
People wake up!
Say NO to McCAIN'T NOW!!!
Are all the Rush listeners so uneducated that they need Rush’s endorsement of a candidate before they can show support?  Mitt Romney is good at running a business.  Possibly, I would hope that we do not run the U.S Government as a business.  That would leave out 99% of the population.  Anyone running to be President of the United States just to be President should not be nominated.  That is who Mitt Romney is.  I like how he refers to Michigan as his second home.  I do not think he has been back here since he left 30 years ago besides this campaign.  I think he referred to New Hampshire as his second home also.  He’ll need some time to figure it out.  Maybe Rush can tell him where his second home really is.

I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN, THE DEMOCRATS ARE A DISEASE OF THE SKIN, BUT A TRAITOR IS A DIESEASE OF THE HEART.
MCCAIN, YOU BETRAYED THE REPUBILICAN PARTY.  WE TRUSTED YOU.  NEVER AGAIN!

VOTE MITT ROMNEY
Kyra, so fees are not taxes?  Oh ok.

So you Brother Mitt fans, I guess:

He wasn't for abortion-it was pre-birth eradication

Not for gay rights-it was same gender relationship equality

Call it what you will, looks like a duck, quacks like a duck...oh and is it Mormon or LDS?
john mccain is a dangerous man...he is a mean spirited man who appears willing to destroy all of america to protect his and george bush's perceptions of reality...by the way repukes, still no wmds, you are still lying about the war and you are going to be routed this fall
Gee, I live in MASS and Romney was a great Governor!  He cut waste, fraud in entitlements, brought in jobs and technologies...I could go on!
McCain is negative, lies and and "forgets" his stance on the economy, Iraq time table, illegals.
McCain is a war hero, not a President.
What is the difference between flip flopping and "hearing the people" when the don't like what you have done?  I think that McCain did that when it came to immigration after a period of time.  Romney just did it at different times.
