The State of the Union

So did Obama snub Clinton? The Chicago Tribune seems to think so. "Sen. Barack Obama refused to make himself available to greet Sen. Hillary Clinton before the speech. When members of the Senate entered the chamber, Obama came in before Clinton. He went out of his way to greet as many House members as possible and walked halfway across the chamber to greet members of the Supreme Court, the president's cabinet, the military joint chiefs. That made what happened next even more striking. Obama returned to stand by his seat next to Sen. Edward Kennedy who endorsed Obama today in a widely watched event that reverberated across the political world.”

More: “As Clinton approached, Kennedy made sure to make eye contact and indicated he wanted to shake her hand. Clinton leaned towards Kennedy over a row of seats and Kennedy leaned in towards her. They shook hands. Obama stood icily staring at Clinton during this, then turned his back and stepped a few feet away. Kennedy may've wanted to make peace with Clinton but Obama clearly wanted no part of that.”

For her part, Clinton sidestepped a question from NBC’s Brian Williams about whether Kennedy’s endorsement had to do with his disapproval of the Clinton campaign’s tone and conduct. Williams asked, “Does anything about this incident prompt you to change the message of your campaign or how it’s conveyed?” Her response, per NBC’s Sarah Demarest: “Well, I think the message of my campaign is very clear. It is about the high stakes in this election. It is about why is ready to be president on Day One to tackle the tough problems that will await our next president, especially after the eight years of President Bush’s time in office. And it is about who is best prepared to really bring the country together around solutions around solving problems. You know, that’s what I’ve done for 35 years. That’s what I’m offering in this campaign.”

Interestingly, Clinton apparently cancelled her later interviews on CNN, FOX News, and MSNBC.

As for Bush’s final State of the Union address, the Washington Post says, “Gone were the grand dreams of remaking Social Security, immigration law or the tax code. In their place were modest initiatives, such as hiring preferences for military spouses. The economic package targeted tax breaks to low- and middle-class workers. And the foreign policy stressed Middle East peacemaking and diplomacy with rogue nations.”

“President Bush took office with so much derision for the outgoing president that critics defined his attitude toward governing as ABC -- "anything but Clinton." He would not play ‘small ball,’ he declared, nor would he coddle North Korea or waste time mediating between the Israelis and Arabs. But as he delivered his final State of the Union address last night, Bush increasingly appeared to be adopting some of his predecessor's approach.”

The Globe’s Peter Canellos’ analysis: “In calling last night for a bipartisan compromise on securing Medicare and Social Security, an international pact to reduce greenhouse gases, and greater action to diminish national dependence on foreign oil, Bush sought to exercise precisely the kind of results-oriented, nonideological leadership he promised in his 2000 presidential campaign.”

The Los Angeles Times: “The most upbeat, soaring section of Bush's speech, ironically, was his description of progress in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq -- accomplishments whose durability remain in question, and for which few Americans seem to grant the president much credit.”

The New York Times says Bush “devoted relatively little of his 53 minute speech to the economy, the issue that is the top concern of voters during this election year. He spent far more time talking about the issue that has been his own primary concern, Iraq. Mr. Bush made the case that his troop buildup had “achieved results few of us could have imagined just one year ago,” and reminded Americans that in coming months, 20,000 troops will have come home. Yet he avoided any timetable for further withdrawal and, if anything, seemed to be preparing the country for a far longer-term stay in Iraq, warning that a precipitous withdrawal could lead to a backslide in security.

Did anybody notice that Bush's agenda sounds a lot like Obama's?
Wow, you guys are complete hacks. You're telling me that their wasn't ONE of your own reporters there who could tell you how the Clinton/Obama handshake went down? Instead, you rely on the Chicago Tribune, while you are one of the largest news sources. How about you portray both sides of what happened, Mark Halperin can do it; Axelrod even put out a statement that directly contradicts the Tribune's story, which you have co-opted. Pathetic.
the WORST president EVER!!!!!!!

TO THE MORON WHO WROTE THE ABOVE STATEMENT; (That would be YOU Domenico Montanaro)
Hillary's answer is about as direct and succinct as you can get. She stated very clearly what her campaign is all about. You need to go back to "yellow journalism school" and learn how to spin a story better than that. You are an idiot and a liar,...and you are openly cheering, lying and spinning for Obama. We can all see it.

On Morning Joe, David Axelrod told them it was the way the pic was taken.  Obama was not snubbing.  He turned away to let HRC and Kennedy have a few words without being in the way.  The picture makes it look a certain way that was not the real case.
BUSH WARNED THE DEMS TO RENEW THE EVAESDROPPING BILL WHICH EXPIRES ON THE FIRST, IT HAS SAVED US FROM SEVERAL ATTACKS.  THE DEMS WANT US ATTACKED FOR POLITICAL REASONS, EVERYONE SHOULD BE PUT IN PRISON FOR TREASON, I HATE THEM, RIDICULING OUR ARMY, PROTECTING AL QUEDA.

IF YOU ARE A DEMOCRAT YOU CAN KISS MY YOU KNOW WHAT YOU COWARDS
thank God we only have  a year left of this FOOL to ruin America and the world but we shall overcome even his stupidity.

Who cares, wouldn't you snub Clinton who insinuated you were a drug dealing muslim who can only get elected by black people.

Clinton has no class, I'm not buying this one.
Here we go again. Hillary is running to be president VICTIAM!
bush will go down in history in the same company as hitler, saddam and all the other psuedo leaders who caused so much destruction.
Is there really any surprise that Obama would turn away? Who among us could take the falsehoods the clintons have thrown at Obama and not be offended if that had been us instead?

These people are human beings in the end afterall. I just hope that the triple whammy of South Carolina, Caroline Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy moderates the Clinton approach.

John Edwards has gone after Obama, but he's done it in a tasteful and classy way. The Clintons haven't gone after Obama in any way but smearing and lying.

We deserve better. We all deserve better.
BUSH APROVAL RATING 36 PER CENT    CONGRESS   22 PER CENT   DID YOU SEE THE DEMS SNUB OUR MILITARY.  THEY ARE THE SORRIEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD, WANTING US TO LOSE THE WAR, AND FOR US TO BE ATTACKED.
I sat down to watch the State of the Union (Ok, I was watching Two and a Half Men and the speech came on before I realized it.) I was so disgusted by the cheers for Bush, all the kisses and warm welcomes from Nancy Pelosi, I got up and turned it off before he opened his big lying mouth! What part of 18% approval rating for Congress and 32% for Bush do these people not get? My government sucks.
More indication that Obama is not the man of "change."  He acted like a petty petulant child, and proves again his is simply not Presidential material.
Would Senator Obamas snub of Senator Clinton be an indicator of how he would deal with our allies across the globe that don't agree that he is the next coming?

As a side note, if Senator Kennedy successfully jams Obama down the throat of the Democratic party, then I think he can rest assured that his endorsement will have the same effect in the general election that it did for Senator Kerry.  I know I will certainly be a crossover vote for either an Independent or the Republican candidate before I vote for a stuffed shirt offering nothing more than platitudes.
Obama has played the race card to his great advantage and manipulated the clintons into a corner. He knowingly went back to regan for the last "fresh idea's" president, knowing it would push Bill over the wall. He then wraps himself in the image of JFK and then snubs Hillary's offer of a handshake last night. To paraphrase - I knew JFK and Obama is so far from him. Obama is a young, rash, angry intellectual with no idea of how to move us to the middle as a nation. He just keeps repeating one nation - hope - one nation - hope... At some point there needs to be some action verbs in those sentences. And speaking that aloud - I flashed back to Teddy Kennedy's disaster runs for the presidency - when political observers also kept encouraging Ted to use some action verbs. Ted Kennedy was and is the ultra liberal who - if allowed - would give away all money to anyone who popped up in the US. Obama is now a page from Ted's dreamsof one nation? That would come at the expense of the middle class. I am the middle class and I can not afford Obama's dreams either.
From The New York Times ...

The relationship began to change, according to several Democrats who are friendly to both senators, when Mr. Obama began musing aloud about a presidential bid. The day he opened his exploratory committee, several Senate observers said, he extended his hand and said hello on the Senate floor. She breezed by him, offering a cool stare.

One week later, following the State of the Union address, the two senators found themselves doing a back-to-back interview on CNN. Mr. Obama went first, with Mrs. Clinton pacing a few feet away. Finally, an aide escorted her completely around the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building, avoiding walking directly by Mr. Obama.

Where is the HOPE?

"Obama stood icily staring at Clinton during this, then turned his back and stepped a few feet away. Kennedy may've wanted to make peace with Clinton but Obama clearly wanted no part of that.

As president, Obama has said he would meet with the U.S.'s enemies without precondition. But making nice with Clinton apparently is another mattter after the increasingly angry fight the two have waged, with charges and countercharges, for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The sense in the press gallery was that Obama didn't cover himself in glory. Someone even used the word "childish." (Not this writer.) Judging by how much conversation there was about this brush off in the press gallery, Americans will be hearing a lot more about this tomorrow and in coming days."
Bush sucks
He snubbed Hilliary because like all men he is a PETTY BULLY who has thin skin.LOOK at him working out plans with that old walrus of the democratic party the piture looked like some rennisance painting with Obama and Kennedy eyes working hilliary over ,the last time kennedy help the dems the lost a sitting president.
George W Bush should be being investigated for violations of the the U.S. Constitution. He is a disgrace.
Did the Clinton campagin worry about the perception that teddy Killed MARY JOE AT CHAPAQUDIK and the last person looking for change is that dinosour, lets see KENNEDY SCARBORRO MATTHEWS TUCKER HANNITY BILL O JOHN KERRY  GREAT LINE UP cant wait for ANN COULTURE to endorse him
old george probably drew that speech up at a card game...all it is- is bits and pieces removed from previous speeches...what kind of example has been set for our youth when you can be president for 2 terms and do absolutely nothing good for the country, collect a paycheck, and secure countless millions into your bank accounts through government contracts and oil price gouging.... boy, the american public are the real dopes....and you people are going to prove it all over again in November!!!
do us a favor and if you don't want to give us either edwards or clinton then stay the hell home and don't vote all together!!!

I think the Press is trying to make this into something it was not. Why not focus on something that's really happening like Hillary trying to pretend all 3 Democrats ran in Florida today and she won.

To me this looks like a desperate move to try to gain Momentum and glory where there is none. Now that is real story as it speaks to the character of the Clinton's.
The only ones who are insinuating are his camp followers I state quite clearly OBAMA DID DRUGS COCAINE WAS THE CHOICE he wrote the book not I dont try to be COOL and say you did drugs when yoou were young that only ENCOURAGES that behavior OH LOOK HE MADE IT I CAN EXPERIMENT AND MAKE IT TOO. COKE ISNNT WEED IT DESTOYED NEIGHBORHOODS FAMILIES EVERYTHING IT TOUCHES dont say I did it to OBAMA HE PROUDLY ANNOUNCED IT IN HIS BOOK .
Kenn get a life...you are as bad as the Clinton bashers..are you a paid poster.
Great speech by a great man. President Bush is a man of principles. He did hwat was right, not what was popular. History will show him to be one of the very best Presidents ever.
May I offer some perspective. Please rise above the some of the more petty, gossipy, twitty viewpoints expressed here. The stakes are too high to get sucked down like this. There's a Supreme Court seat at stake during the next Presidency. I for one want to see the U.S. Constitution to prevail. The new FISA Bill being pushed right now would be disastrous to our freedoms. Not just telecoms, ANY contractor for the Gov would be immune to prosecution. (Blackwater?) Quit squabbling folks. You should be calling your senators urging them NOT to pass it. Its ANOTHER Bush LIE. Another 4 years of a Republican administration & we're all screwed. I personally prefer Obama. But if Hillary gets the nomination I'll hold my nose & vote for her. Its still INFINATELY beter than what 4 more years of another Republican will do to our ONCE great Democracy.
To all the fans of the TV show "24", insert President Palmer handshake joke here. (lol)

P.S. Here is a different angle of the alleged snub . . . looks like Senator Obama is engaged with someone else.

Unbelievable people still think this POS has done the right thing.  I guess people think that torture is the right thing as well.
JT HOLT: Lying repeatedly to the citizens of the U.S. & the world, violating the U.S. Constitution....these are traits of GREATNESS? more like traits of a sociopath in my book.
Can anyone follow-up with the Sen. Clinton NO-SHOW on CNN, MSNBC and FIXED-NEWS post-SoU?  I saw her with Brian Williams and then poof she was gone.  Anderson Cooper told his audience that she willingly declined to be interviewed.  Huh?
To J Merle Stanley:

Sen. Clinton's answer was to a question that wasn't asked. The question was, has this prompted to you CHANGE your campaign. She responded by talking about WHAT the message of her campaign was. That wasn't the question. But you certainly are adept at that Orwellian doublethink: "Hillary Clinton double-plus good; Barack Obama double-plus ungood."

I admit, my Newspeak is not nearly as good as yours surely must be.

(If you didn't get the reference, Google "Newspeak". Or read "1984".)

Clintons are getting what they earned ... scorn

Bush should have hired a loaf of bread to write his speech.  BTW Dubya, you may want to google 1973 oil embargo.
Obama was doing the polite thing. He was allowing Clinton to have a moment with Ted Kennedy, without being in her face saying - yes your long time family friend endorsed me instead of you and took away your husband's Kennedy legacy and passed the torch to me, because I am actually going to change America and not just triangulate. The picture looks as if Obama is slighting Clinton. He is just being polite.

It would be the same if John Edwards came up to shake John Kerry's hand the day after Kerry endorsed Obama. Edwards and Obama are always friendly, but because of the personal relationship between Kerry and Edwards, Obama would want to give Kerry and Edwards a moment, without the awkwardness of Obama being in Edwards face.

When Obama becomes President, he will unite the country and work with all members of Congress, including Hillary Clinton. He will even work with Bill (of Billary) because Bill Clinton is still a valuable asset in renewing America's image abroad.

Obama shook Bush's hand but Clinton didn't shake Bush's hand, so is Obama avoiding Clinton or is Clinton avoiding everyone?  Clinton was supposed to do the rounds of news shows after the State of the Union, but except for one with Brian Williams, she cancelled the rest. Obama did several, and gave a strong response, basically speaking for the Democratic party.  See here:
http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/sotu
In SC Obama took 80% (I voted for him)of the black vote and I was an Obama supporter especially after Ted Kennedy endorsed him, but after all of the news media coverage (specifically MSNBC, Chris, Meka, Joe, and sad to say Tim Russert as I thought to be one of the most neutral figures on TV)and overwhelming loped sided coverage about how Obama is going to unite the country, I'm putting my support in Hillary's hat because she does indeed have the most experience and I think she can lead from day one.  I heard a very brief mention of the other Kennedy's and Mya Angelou's endorsements and it was simply unfair.  I didn't hear one thing about Obama who(Unity disclaimer) basically snubbed Hillary during the State of the Union speech after she walked over to both Obama and Kennedy to shake their hands.  He actually turned his back to avoid acknowledging her. I'm sorry but I think he's fooled us all and maybe even a sheep in wolves clothing.  Maybe he'll be ready in another 8 years...but not now, that one action alone on last Monday night told me that he is not mature enough to be our President of this Great United States.  It pains me to quote "Fair and Balanced" but I have to use it, everyone knows how you all feel, just keep it fair and balanced.

DEMOCRATS WHO HAD AFFAIRS IN OFFIC CLINTON FDR JFK AND YOUR POINT BEING ,sex makes for good presidents
All of this hoopla about one candidate snubbing the other..this is nothing new people..unfortunately. And mud slinging is not a foreign concept in political campaigns.

I watched the president's speech and while I may not agree with all of his ideas and concepts, I felt it was important to listen to what he had to say.

Maybe it wasn't new or innovative, but it was worth the hour it took..of course it could have been less without the standing ovations..by only half of the attendees for the most part.

If people don't like the elected officials or the candidates then do something constructive. Volunteer to work on a campaign for someone you believe in. Be willing to speak out about what needs to change and do something about it.

I have not decided who I will vote for, but one thing is for sure, I don't think this country is ready for a female president or one who follows the muslim faith..someone too old to begin a 4 year stint in the White House, a former mayor, or whoever.

But if I don't vote..I don't deserve to complain.
Name calling, snubbing of someone, finger pointing..wow, sounds a lot like kindergarten. Oh wait, these "children" are running to become president. Scary thought, isn't it?

J. Merle Stanley, perhaps you should learn what answering a question directly means.  Clinton avoided answering directly and spouted more talking points.  How is that succinct?

As for the Obama "snub", a lot of you folks need to get a life.  Media included.  First, though I've said it before, it bears repeating: too many people have fought and died gaining us the right to vote, and the Tribune's spinning of the moment and comments like "Obama didn't look presidential" (hell, did Bush?  Ever?) just prove to me that we don't live in a serious country, a place where people truly value the votes they cast.  Second, it's no secret these two don't like each other - why be inauthentic about it?  It's not like she offered her hand and he refused to shake it.  Really, why is everyone determined to be so dramatic about this?

Grow up, people.  Base your vote on who's going to lead the country in the best way, not who didn't shake whose hands.  Come on.
Another thing - these comments are actually moderated?  Then how does something like this ("DEMOCRATS WHO HAD AFFAIRS IN OFFIC CLINTON FDR JFK AND YOUR POINT BEING ,sex makes for good presidents") make it through?
It seems that the Tribune is using a photograph out of context to distort what really happened.   Remember folks, newspapers exist to sell newspapers, and nothing sells papers like a controversy ... even if that controversy has to be artificially ginned up!  MSNBC isn't doing any of their own reporting on this, but is simply re-saying what the Trib said.  Come on folks, dig a little deeper.

My ears were bleeding after the first five minutes of the speech. This man is not only successful at destroying whole economies, he is very adept at destroying the English language as well.

History will show that GW Bush is and was the most bumbling, clueless idiot to ever occupy the White House. Oh, by the way, his choice to go to war was so easy, that they had an Iraq invasion plan already mapped out, before 911. What was popular at the time was to invade Iraq. It was popular because his administration lied about the situation to get the support needed.
It was not popular at the time to be against an invasion. And there is only one viable candidate that was against an invasion since the beginning...... hint..... it wasn't Billary.
Obama spin masters are out spinning about the classless Obama snub.
Did you read about the lasting effects of Lead in our environment?  How, before the de-leadification laws of the 70's (Serious Dem control of Congress then), all the lead allowed in gasoline and paint stays in our systems till we die and cause speech problems (in addition to just plain brain ability problems).

Do I need to say anyting more.  As time goes on, will all GOPew's disappear?
I can't believe the comment from the person that said he was an Obama supporter (especially after the Kennedy endorsement) but decided to switch to Hillary because 'the unfair media coverage on Obama's behalf'.

Geez. If you're that easily manipulated, I would hope that you find it impossible to make your way to the poles to vote for anyone... You should endorse the person that  shares your policy views and vision for the country...regardless of how weighted the media coverage is.

PLUS: Did you not see the alternative picture of that same moment showing Barak Obama talking to someone at the very moment that Hillary extended her hand to TED KENNEDY (Not BARAK OBAMA).

Your comment shows a lack of maturity as a voting citizen.
