Obama snub? He says no

Posted: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:16 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan and Domenico Montanaro
On Obama’s campaign plane, he answered questions about the “snub” moment from the State of the Union and Florida’s relevance, or lack there of, in this nominating process.

He said he was “surprised” about the photo and how his apparent turning away from Clinton was being characterized.

“I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton],” Obama said. “And senator Clinton and I have had very cordial relations on the floor and off the floor; I waved at her as we were coming into the Senate chamber before we walked over. I think there's a lot more tea leaf reading going on here than I think people are suggesting.”

McCaskill was on the plane with Obama to back up his alibi, and she scolded the press for reading something into nothing.

"It was not a snub," she emphatically declared. "It was one of those accidents. Frankly everyone's spoiling for a fight, which is the politics of old, you know this thing isn't the politics of old. Its about new. It's unfortunate that everyone is so anxious for there to be problem on a personal level and I gotta tell yah, its just not there."

She added, "And I hope that um, that you guys help correct the impression that's out there. That somehow there was some kind of attempt on the part of Barack in any way be disrespectful or impolite.

But reporters pressed her, asking if there was a handshake or some kind of greeting between Obama and Clinton. how could he have missed the handshake. McCaskill, referring to when Obama first walked in said, "There was a friendly wave. A friendly moment [between the two candidates.]

"I was amazed when I woke up this morning. I didn't even realize, it was one of those things that all of a sudden is being blown into something it really just wasn't."

On Florida and Clinton saying she would reinstate Florida’s delegates... the Democratic National Committee told First Read months ago that any eventual nominee would likely work with a credentialing committee to seat a non-voting Florida delegation.

“Those decisions would be made after the nomination not before,” Obama said. “The DNC has been clear about its positions. Obviously I care a lot about the people in Michigan and the people in Florida, and I want their votes in the general election and will be actively campaigning for it.”

He added that he thinks today’s voting in Florida “probably is a snapshot. It's a beauty contest. It's similar to a poll, but none of us have campaigned there, so people have no idea what the respective candidates stand for -- no chance to lift the hoods and kick the tires.”

according to obama, the people of FLA cannot go on websites, read articles, or watch TV so they have no clue as to what any of the candidates stand for. Is this because he knows his best way of getting votes is to go out in public and give one of adjective laden speeched about dreams and visions. Shouldnt the facts on his own website and written be substantial enough without the bravado of his one speeches?

Also as for the "snub"  some smart reporter better get over to Claire McCAskill and ask her to give the alibi. I can see media spin when its spun. But then again, what else can he say.
Two snapshots that are damaging to the Obama candidacy. Too late in issuing an explanation while you and your camp had the thought that media wouldn't dare call you out on last night's snub.

TICK, TOCK...Super Tuesday....
Why didn't you call Senator Obama on his statement that "None of us has campaigned there".  Let me see, who has ads running on TV there?  Couldn't be someone named Obama could it?

"Obiviously I care a lot about the people in Michigan and Florida and want their votes in the general election".  I guess he only listens to the DNC and doesn't care about the people of Michigan and Florida in the primary.  So much for changing the establishment, follow the DNC policy no matter what it does to the voters of Florida and Michigan.
Of course it wasn't a snub.  Obama always tries his hardest to be cordial to Clinton every time they meet. I personally think the media should issue an apology, because this story can have very real world implications.  The media jumped to conclusions, and in turn, made Obama look rash and impolite.  It couldn't be further from the truth.

Anyone curious about Clinton's etiquette should look up what happened when Obama started talking about how he might run for President in the Senate...
I'm undecided about who & which party I’m voting for, but found this great article called "Black Voters and a Twist of Bias" on the BlogZine SAVAGE POLITICS.

WOW- all I have to say!
Here is an excerpt: “Last Saturday’s South Carolina Democratic Primary produced the widely expected result of a Barack Obama victory. From the beginning of the week, it was the ethnic composition of the State in question which was amply discussed by both the Media and it’s multiple pundits. It was here and through other sources that we discovered that 55% percent of Democratic voters in South Carolina were African American. An interesting number when you consider the “coincidence” that Obama actually won the election by exactly the same margin: 55%. Of course, many in Clinton’s campaign have used this demographic reality to spin their defeat, vociferating that they had always expected to loose from the start. It should be noted that it has been this exact attitude which they have ridiculed Obama’s camp for, insinuating that they had proved to be “sore losers” by not admitting their own failures in stating their case to the American People. As we all know, in modern politics, no campaign is free of idiotic childishness, sadly resurfacing the reality that our current political existence is dominated by whining imbeciles of the lowest ilk. Nevertheless, the Clinton Campaign’s affirmation (victory based on a unified ethnic constituency) is valid, especially when we consider the data.
The Primary’s exit polling, presented by all major networks, were utilized by analysts to determine how was Obama’s, Edwards’, and Clinton’s support spread throughout different social markers. Their results indicated that 80% of the Black vote, and only 20% of the White vote, went towards Barack Obama. Regarding most White voters in the State, you could easily identify their split between John Edwards and Hillary Clinton. The significance of this racial division is crucial in understanding the fate of Barack Obama’s campaign, and the Democratic Party, if they chose to face the General Election with him at the helm.…” Find the rest of the article at http://savagepolitics.com/?p=59
Again with the foot in mouth......give me a break! He has the maturity of a 2 year old who had his toy taken away.  Yup, that's the kind of "unity" I want to lead our country.

Let the kids stay out and play while the grown-ups get the country back on track!

HILLARY '08

It's obvious what Hillary is trying to do with the delegate situation in Florida. She agreed to the DNC stance in not allowing Florida delegates to vote at the convention.

Now that she lost South Carolina by wide margin, she wants to now make it seem as though she's championing the Democratic voters of Florida. She's so transparent that it's laughable.
The suggestion that Obama snubbed Hillary last night is almost as dumb as the suggestion that Romney received a "whispered cheat" in the debate on Saturday.  both situations are media and bloggers looking for a fight to boost their candidate.  Both suggestions are dumb and have been proven wrong.

Come on people.  If you can't find real issues to talk about, at least don't make up stupid, baseless lies.  A little maturity would go a long way in the campaign this year.
Another hit job from Hillary Clinton's campaign; what has become of the press corp.? Well, in the era of Britney Spear any thing can happen. I am not surprise such irrelevant issue is being discussed by the member of the press corp.

Thank God I don't have to waste my money subscribing to this tabloid news. If I were Obama, i won't answer that question. Before he knows it, the women will be crying fowl.
I guess Obama and Clinton should have looked and smiled at one another for the entire address, just to avoid any still shots that suggested any tension, lol.
If that wasn't a snub last night, then I have never seen one!  How convenient that one of your supporters is there to lie for you.

Turn to answer the question of a governor from Missouri when your chief rival and a U.S. Senator is there to greet you, and Senator Kennedy, how presidential is that?
If it had been Hillary no one would have said a word about this photo.
I would like to know which candidate the photographer supports and what sort of spin he put on this photo to exaggerate its importance.
Since he had it broadcast to very news station within moments of the SotU, I think it's fairly obvious what his goal was and every last one of you have bought into it.  This is the silliest "reporting" in this campaign yet.  Why does MSNBC, CNN, FOX give legs to this junk???  Oh, that's right, they can't find anything constructive to report.  Be ashamed.
Who cares?  Turn your computers and televisions off for an hour you nerds.
Obama's explanation makes sense and it's supported by this photograph.

Everyone knows McCaskill tapped Obama's shoulder after he turned his back to avoid eye contact with Hillary.

What a bunch of liars and spin masters. Same old politics!

Only blind supporters can't see thru this.
JT- his ad in Florida is a national ad.  It is not targeted to Floridians.  It's only there because, surprise, Florida is part of the nation.  He has not campaigned there.  Hillary voluntarily signed the same pledge that Obama and Edwards signed.  It's not a matter about not caring.  It's a matter of staying true to your word.  Hillary going against her own word shows a lack of integrity.
This was another major failure by the media.  The first was when they accused Hillary of crying when that wasn't the case.  And now they accused Obama of snubbing Hillary when that isn't the case.

Why don't we talk about the issues that matter to the American people instead of nonsense like this?
Uh, JT...it's HIS JOB to listen to the DNC.  As it is Hillary's but she obviously flies above the rules, in her mind and in her supporters' minds.
Thank god for the Republicans.
How about the fact that name recognition is going to be a big part?  What about the fact that no campaign has any offices in Florida or had and in Michigan so it can't get out its message.  Anyway why didn't Clinton bring up anything about Michigan BEFORE its election.  The answer is simple.  One: Nevada's caucus was just 5 days behind Michigan and the Clinton team couldn't afford to alienate Nevada's early status
Everyone knows McCaskill tapped Obama's shoulder after he turned his back to avoid eye contact with Hillary.

What a bunch of liars and spin masters. Same old politics!

All of us should have been smart enough to see the media hype of that photo for exactly what it was... HYPE.  I am NOT an Obama supporter, but I am also NOT buying into the ridiculous notion that he would turn his back on Hillary Clinton in a deliberate effort to snub her.  He is a decent man and a fine candidate, and all this brouhaha over that photo was nothing more than the media trying to create a story where none existed.  I think it proves that it's up to US, as VOTERS, to think for ourselves, draw conclusions for ourselves, and VOTE for ourselves, without letting the media tell us what we know isn't so.  Again, I'm a Hillary supporter, but still I won't buy into this garbage about Obama slighting her on the floor of the House Chamber last night.  Nonsense.
Today in KS, Obama's event is just starting in a town called El Dorado...near Wichita. Thousands of people there driving in from as far as 3 hours from Kansas City. Small college gymnasium and people waited for hours in tents and a driving snowstorm. The overflow was packed into classrooms but still they had to turn people away. Something is happening out here in the heartlands...something big...wonder if this wave will crest by Feb 5th?
What about the picture of them plotting against hilliary giving her that dirty look oh he was just looking at some lint on her jacket come on BE HONEST you snubbed her be a man an admit it.CLAIR MACASKILL knows that a man can do it better than a woman she just was able to come to terms JEALOUS maybe.
There are two different pictures of this circulating one with Obama from the front view the other from the back----Clearly, he's talking to McCaskill!!!

Clinton supporters....you need to ask yourself---do you really dislike Obama. If so, why?  TRying to be objective you could argue that the Clintons have done some things for you to dislike them, but what has Obmam done?
Kira UTah,
What if before IA,sensing that she was loosing and Hillary decided to bypass early state and go national on the feb 5th state and started airing ad on cable nationwide, what would you have said???? I am waiting to see how you are going to spin this one.
WHO YOU GONNA BELIve OBAMA AND MACASKILL or YOUR lying EYES dont believe what you see let OBAMA and his team tell you what to believe like BUSH.
All he had to do was tell Claire McCaskill, just a moment, (seeing that he was setting beside her all night), and then just address Hillary. Remember, "they will say anything to get elected".  Not my words.
There is NO story here and it would nice if the Hillary supporters and bored journalists would stop trying to create one.
Yo Hillary haters--including Chuck-els, Chris Matthews and Josephine. Obama is a one-speech-deep media sensation. There's no "there" there. If you take away the teleprompter, he's toast. What will happen to this cardboard cutout when you turn on him/it--and you will at some point.

Let's put someone in the White House who can BE a leader, not just talk about it.

Hillary all the way!

I would hate to have support the Demo ticket, corruption, scandal, lies, back stabbing! No wonder they Washington self serving paper hangers. We the people are being side stepped for their dysfunctional failures.

The congress is rated lower than the President, such a shameful state of being.

Sen. Barack Obama on his even temper

photo with Barack facing Claire McCaskell

http://markhalperin.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/kennedyclintonsh260.jpg

Ungracious again!  Look at his face and read the AP account.  Claire [McCaskill]tapped him on the shoulder after he turned away.  She recognized what he had just done.

A picture is worth a thousand words.  Caption:Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., greets Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., back to camera, as fellow hopeful, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. turns away before President Bush's the State of the Union address.
The suprising thing about this campaign is the amount of bickering among supporters between Obama and Clinton, but this photo story is rediculous and I'm sure that Clinton supporters can be grown up and realize that this isn't the academy awards and there isn't celebrity drama backstage. It's a campaign and a state of the union address, not a "who's snubbing who?" on the red carpet. In the words of Mrs. Clinton, let's all take a deep breath. Hopefully, when we exhale, the Clintons (plural) will disappear into history and we can stop the petty politics.
If people can't see that Obama was intentionally snubbing Hillary last night then they must be blind.  Last night Hillary took the high road, she could have easily snubbed Teddy and Obama, but no she chose to be the bigger person and seek out Teddy and do the right thing by being polite and cordial.  What did MSNBC's president, Obama do, he turned his back on her, snubbed her and had the look of a pissed off child who was just told he couldn't have another piece of candy.  Come on people, wake up, if something smells like a skunk, looks like a skunk, and acts like a skunk, then it is probably a skunk.  It is just too bad that MSNBC, the Barack Obama Television Network, can't see it, or more likely doesn't want to.
Wow, thanks Callimco for posting that other angle.  It's funny how a different view of the same situation entirely backs up Obama's story 100%.  Will the media have the respect and decency to run THIS picture for the rest of the day?

Kira, Utah

Advertising is campaigning, it is disengenious to say otherwise.  Maybe the television stations should have issued a warning, "caution this advertisement may be considered campaigning, do not watch if you honor the DNC pledge".

As for Florida being part of the nation, believe it or not I got past the 8th grade and even recognize Utah as part of the nation.  I just wish the DNC would recognize that all states should be able to hold their primaries when they want, and not try to control the process so that they can crown the one they want to be the nominee.

[[It was not a snub," she emphatically declared. "It was one of those accidents. Frankly everyone's spoiling for a fight]...]]

Especially the news media. They fixate on made-up crap like this  to avoid reporting anything of real importance. I don't know why some newspapers get referred to as the "tabloid press." It's ALL tabloid press in the U.S. these days.
I don't know of any rules that prevented her from going national.  And she also has national ads running now.  I saw the first two aired in Utah the same day (one from Obama and one from Clinton). What does that matter?  Her ads are showing in the same locales as his, so her calling him on it is just stupid when she is also in Florida actively campaigning.

Your "what if" strategy is exactly what Giuliani did.  Every other candidate was too smart to do that.  However, February 5 is next week, so it's smart for Obama (and Clinton) and everyone else to be running national ads now (before Florida is done)- especially those who have less name recognition.  No spin necessary- just some intelligence and foresight.

By the way "loosing" is the opposite of "tightening".  I assume you meant "losing".
A grrrr to Obama's statement regarding Florida voters.  Here in Florida, we get regular news, cable news C-Span.  We absolutely know what the respective candidates stand for.  How insulting!!
Obama can make nice-nice with George Bush by shaking his hand after, but not Hillary Clinton? What a baby. He is a pathetic whiner.
Are we 8th graders or adults?

The "snub" story is by far the dumbest story yet.
I saw on an earlier post the notion that "a picture tells a thousand words." Therefore, don't try to tell us it wasn't a snub, because we could see Obama looking another direction.

And don't try to tell us Clinton isn't in bed with Rezko because we could see her plain as day in the picture, standing next to him and smiling.
So Obama, Axelrod, and McCaskill all say that Obama did not snub Hillary.  Do you expect them to say anything else?  The media and voters will have to decide what this snub looked like to them.  It is also obvious if you look at the video that Claire tapped Obama AFTER he turned his shoulder to Hillary not before.  Obama could have also reached out to Hillary even if he had been talking to Claire but he did not.  And here is another question: If Hillary had done this to Obama would the media and blogs be treating her with kids gloves over this?  NO.  And if her high level endorsers had stated she had not snubbed Obama would they have been believed? No.
The media its the media that is fooling the people and the people are falling for it. They raised two really insignificant states: Iowa and S.C. Iowa is a causcus (not going to explain it to you) S.C. blacks would naturally vote for a black (even if it was a black corpse). The real test will be super Tuesday. As for Obama his candidacy has been sealed; Ted (what ever happened to that girl in the car), Obama' trip to Lybia with Louis Farrakan to visit Omar, and the endorsement by Holly-gay-wood actors; those are truly good qualifications for a presidential candidate.
“I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton],” Obama said. “

OBAMA CAMPAIGN: NO SNUB INTENDED

On “Morning Joe,” Obama chief strato-man Axelrod said The Snub wasn’t a snub, but simply a matter of Obama dealing with the “awkwardness” of the day and wanting to give Kennedy and Clinton a private moment."

Stay tuned, next excuse Barry blames his staff...

How many excuses equal a lie?

Typical Clintonian Spin, something that has no relevance to the primaries, the issues of the country, or what either candidate stands for, is being targeted as a snub by Hillary and here Orwellian following. The politics of the past is over. Even if Hillary wins the nomination, she has lost a portion of her democratic base that will not return and vote for her in the general election.
The media needs to get a life along with the "Billary" supporters. The so called "snub" (which it was not) is a complete non-issue. If anybody was being phony in that situation it was "Billary". You know that she has got to be "seething" with respect to Ted Kennedy, since she sought and did not get his endorsement. I'am sure she calculated that shaking Ted's hand and smiling would make her seem "gracious under fire".
