Obama snub? He says no

Posted: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:16 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan and Domenico Montanaro
On Obama’s campaign plane, he answered questions about the “snub” moment from the State of the Union and Florida’s relevance, or lack there of, in this nominating process.

He said he was “surprised” about the photo and how his apparent turning away from Clinton was being characterized.

“I was turning away because Claire [McCaskill] asked me a question, as Senator Kennedy was reaching for her [Clinton],” Obama said. “And senator Clinton and I have had very cordial relations on the floor and off the floor; I waved at her as we were coming into the Senate chamber before we walked over. I think there's a lot more tea leaf reading going on here than I think people are suggesting.”

McCaskill was on the plane with Obama to back up his alibi, and she scolded the press for reading something into nothing.

"It was not a snub," she emphatically declared. "It was one of those accidents. Frankly everyone's spoiling for a fight, which is the politics of old, you know this thing isn't the politics of old. Its about new. It's unfortunate that everyone is so anxious for there to be problem on a personal level and I gotta tell yah, its just not there."

She added, "And I hope that um, that you guys help correct the impression that's out there. That somehow there was some kind of attempt on the part of Barack in any way be disrespectful or impolite.

But reporters pressed her, asking if there was a handshake or some kind of greeting between Obama and Clinton. how could he have missed the handshake. McCaskill, referring to when Obama first walked in said, "There was a friendly wave. A friendly moment [between the two candidates.]

"I was amazed when I woke up this morning. I didn't even realize, it was one of those things that all of a sudden is being blown into something it really just wasn't."

On Florida and Clinton saying she would reinstate Florida’s delegates... the Democratic National Committee told First Read months ago that any eventual nominee would likely work with a credentialing committee to seat a non-voting Florida delegation.

“Those decisions would be made after the nomination not before,” Obama said. “The DNC has been clear about its positions. Obviously I care a lot about the people in Michigan and the people in Florida, and I want their votes in the general election and will be actively campaigning for it.”

He added that he thinks today’s voting in Florida “probably is a snapshot. It's a beauty contest. It's similar to a poll, but none of us have campaigned there, so people have no idea what the respective candidates stand for -- no chance to lift the hoods and kick the tires.”

I've been praying that God will shine light on the true character of Barack Obama.  I believe my prayers are being answered....
This whole post is idiotic. How small have our politics become when we are debating this type of thing?  To paraphrase JE, is this going to get our children a better education or health care?

This is just meaningless drivel.
Give me a break! This is news worthy? Obama didn't snub Shrillary.
Making this an 'issue' is kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe, Hillary should have 'cried' about this
That might get her more votes

FOLLOW THE RULES IN FLORIDA !
Everybody agreed to the rules
Now, Billary wants to break the rules
How surprising is that ?

SAY ANYTHING, DO ANYTHING to get Billary elected
*Brings in the cheese tray*

You know, to go with all the WHIIIIIIIIINING on these blogs.

The world does not revolve around Bill and Hillary Clinton folks. Please get over your collective selves. Snub or no snub, nobody cares.
Obama was childish and rude to turn his back on Hillary.  He ALWAYS has to explain away his actions and words.

If Hillary had done the same thing the media would have been all over it saying Hillary is a poor sport. The media treats him with kid gloves and gives Hillary the bare knuckles.

It goes to show you that Obama's message is all BS.  He isnt going to bring ppl together. He complains about ppl picking on him.  He wont even greet his opponent. Actions speak louder than words.

Obama your AD has been running in FL for awhile now and your name is on the ballot. You have had more than a fair chance of getting your "message" across.
Its just not enough to talk we in FL need more substance.
Bottom line he should have shook her hand. Its ridiculous that he did not, no matter who was asking him a question. She came over his way and he should have shook her hand. Then we all would not have to talk about this nonsense.
Chris Matthews is a Drooling Buffoon!

I was the first and biggest fan of the tv show
Hardball, but over the years Chris Matthews has become
more and more of an egomaniac. I don't claim to know
'why' he sides with certain candidates over others,
but I do know that the side he picks is quite clear
and he is utterly unfair in his analysis. For example,
on the Republican side, he was originally for Giuliani
and everyone else was painted in an unrealistically
bad light. Now that Rudy has bombed it is more than
obvious that he is pushing Romney. It has become
unbearably irksome for me to watch his phoniness. I do
try to surf over and catch the David Schuster segments
and I hope that MSNBC will fire Matthews and give the
spot to Schuster.

Chris Matthews is a Drooling Buffoon!
OH PLEEEEZEZE!!!
Why would Obama snub Hilary anyway? He got the Kennedy endorsement.
If Obama had stood there and smiled he would have then been accused of gloating by the whiney Clinton supporters. Luckily Ms. Macaskill saw the awkwardness of the situation and distracted him.

The concern for the Clintons should be for the increasing number of "snubs" by the voters!!
This is not the first time I have seen an unwillingness in Obama to let things go. He behaves like a spoilt child! This just confirms what I have always known - he is not ready for the big league. If he thinks he is going to ride into the White House making MLK and JFK speeches he has another guess coming. The presidency has to be earned. Barack needs to show us what he intends to do in the White House. No more empty speeches. I want to hear serious policy discussions.  This is ridiculous! The way I see it, we have a clear choice - Barack for inspiration or Hillary for capabality. I choose capability. You can choose inspiration but don't cry on my shoulders when you find out that inspiration can't run the country - it never could!
"Obama's explanation makes sense and it's supported by this photograph.

--Callimaco"

"There are two different pictures of this circulating one with Obama from the front view the other from the back----Clearly, he's talking to McCaskill!!!"--lewis, cincinnati ohio"

I am trying to see it but I've looked at both photos mentioned and in the first photo he appears to be "snubbing" Clinton; but in the second mentioned by Callimoca to me looks as if he is looking past McCaskill and McCaskill has both hands together as if clapping and looking over Kennedy's shoulder.  It appears from this photo that he is snubbing Clinton.  I just can't see how this supports his explanation; I would have more respect for him if he had just admitted that he had a momentary lapse in decorum.  Any spin you put on it, the picture is telling us a story.  Sorry but I just don't believe the Obama fairy tale version.
Snub?
Please.
He should have flipped her off.
I would have.

Sounds like everyone is getting tired of the Clinton
and Obama back and forths. Maybe that is why John Edwards says he is taking his campaign all the way to the convention. It's not because he wants to be a king maker-the media has already done that for him.
Today in KS, Obama's event is just starting in a town called El Dorado...near Wichita. Thousands of people there driving in from as far as 3 hours from Kansas City. Small college gymnasium and people waited for hours in tents and a driving snowstorm. The overflow was packed into classrooms but still they had to turn people away. Something is happening out here in the heartlands...something big...wonder if this wave will crest by Feb 5th?
Al, KS (Sent Tuesday, January 29, 2008 1:38 PM)

Many will come to praise the false God; especially the young and easily manipulated.
OBAMA HAS DIVIDED THE PARTY because unlike hilliary running against KERRY OR DEAN she waited and now shes fighting for her politicl life against a jr senator who thinks he runs the democratic party,EGO COMPARING YOURSELF TO JFK EGO,I AM THE GREATEST I am THE SAVIOR or false prophet
I can not believe this is actually a story.  As an Obama supporter I can truthfully say that if the roles were reversed I would have the same reaction. I guess this is a slow news cycle?  Even on stage there are times when their backs are to one another as they greet others.  Is that a story too?  Amazing.
Why do men continually humiliate Hillary??
Hillary supporters need to stop with the "all the boys are picking on me" attitude and grow up.  Forget what Obama, McCaskill and the media say and look at both photos.  Anyone with an ounce of sense can see he was speaking with McCaskill.  Until you look at both photos, just shut it, you sound like a bunch of idiots.  My God, it's a picture and do you really care if he snubs St. Hillary, get over yourselves already.
LETS HOPE FOR THE PEOPLE SIDING WITH OBAMA know he is going to win because payback from the "bitch " is going to be a bitch same for her supporters ask for nothing in return when you lose your constituants lose too.I guess I can vote for another senator againsty barack MACAIN
This is a story? They hate each other. Did anyone hear Hillary's concession speech in Georgia (after she had run from South Carolina like a scalded dog)? Hillary Clinton doesn't have a genuine bone in her body so don't think she thought she was snubbed. Even if she were (which I most definitely would have snubbed her if I were Obama) snubbed, she deserved it.
Why isn't anyone talking about the SAME photograph from a different angle SHOWING Obama AND MCCASKILL engaged in conversation.  I'm sure you all have seen the photo.
JT- I assume you are intelligent enough to know that by campaigning I was referring to in-person, on-the-ground stumping.  Yes, ads are part of a campaign, but campaigning is talking to people, debating, stumping, fundraising, attending town hall meetings, phone banking, etc.  Hillary is doing this in Florida, Barrack is not. They both have national ads there, so that isn't an issue.

I do agree with your second paragraph.  I think the DNC temper tantrum based on states moving up their votes is dumb.  I also think that either all states should be "take all" for delegates, or none should be... in both parties.  It's silly to me that they are playing these games.  It makes for a rather unbalanced primary process.
ROFLMAO!  Did an adult just compare Obama to a skunk because he wasn't facing Hillary Clinton when she spoke with Ted Kennedy?  Maybe he thought they wanted privacy, maybe his arse itched, maybe he didn't feel like smiling and being insincere about how nice it was to see her, maybe they had a mad passionate embrace earlier and the afterglow was all they needed?  Or maybe there are people with way too much time on their hands...me included.
Sasha because her husband does over and over...

How about sticking up for the many women he abused over time. Monica was the only one to save the proof...

If your man doesn't respect you who will?
This issue is dead.... McCaskill has said that she had ask Obama a question. Here's the link to the picture.
http://blogs.trb.com/news/politics/blog/Clinton%20greets%20Kennedy%20with%20Obama%20turned.jpg

Obama and Clinton where seen talking cordially after the SOTU.
What it lacks is sound. McCaskill probably addressed him when asking him a question. And he probably turned around to see who it was, and when he didn't see her, McCaskill tapped him on the shoulder. A snub just wouldn't be consistent with his past behavior with Clinton. This is a media failure pure and simple.
okay, just to appease you hillary supporters, look at ANOTHER photo and try again with your snub argument:
http://markhalperin.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/kennedyclintonsh260.jpg

now, try and find something of importance to discuss.
Doesn't Ted Kennedy = Bill Clinton on Obama's side--and worse?  What a turncoat.  I supported Ted through Chapiquidic and through all the years after have said he's done more for this country than any of the other Kennedys and gets the least respect.  Well, he's finally lost mine.
This another exmple of Obama who is play politics...and he doesn't want to admit for any mistakes...he need to be a grow up man not just good on words.  respect, please...anyway, if he is the nominee for demo, I will vote the republic for sure.
Obama is lying and here is the photo to prove it:  http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/1/29/135035/648  He didn't turn away due to Claire McCaskill prompting him.  Her mouth is closed and she is looking straight at Hillary.  Obama's lack of humility and his immaturity remind me alot of George Bush.
How "highschool" does one have to be in order to misconstrue this situation as some sort of snub?

First of all, there's no evidence of a snub, and second of all, why is Obama getting the blame for this so-called "snub?"  It takes two people to have a conversation between...two people.  Hillary is just as guilty as Obama, which is...not guilty at all.

This wouldn't be news-worthy even IF Obama was snubbing Hillary.  Honestly, I don't care if they like each other, and neither should anyone else, as long as it doesn't affect their jobs.
I as an African-American am appalled of the bias coverage toward Obama. Is it white quilt or MSNBC is setting up Obama for the Republican in November. If the pundits at MSNBC thinks that the Republicans are not going to use race if Obama is the nominee they must be living a fairytale. I am now doing the unthinkable switching to Foxs for balance coverage
It is almost amusing to see how deep the "Opponents of Obama" have to dig to mud-sling. However, the Clinton Pair can be brash on a daily basis with minimal criticism.  I have so much admiration for Barack and his steadfast politeness, vision and drive through all the political muck. He won Iowa, predominately white, he won SC,  predominately black... Let it go, this race is not about race!!!
Barack Obama '08!!!
Holy crap! Really? This qualifies as news? A SNAP shot. A second of time captured on film and the MSM wants to blow it into a virtual punch in the face.
So, First Read, now that you have an explanation from the accused snubber and a witness, do you retract all your earlier reporting that amounted to fanning the flames?
What does Obama have to gain by snubbing Hillary? You Clintonites are ridiculous..Hillary even thinks this is ridiculous. Next subject!
MSNBC, MAKE UP YOUR MINDS!!!!!

David Axelrod, on MSNBC, offers an alternate explanation for that awkward moment on the floor:
"I don't think he snubbed her at all. First of all, they acknowledged each other as they entered the chamber. But I think he knew that Senator Kennedy and Senator Clinton were friends. This was obviously an awkward day from that standpoint, and I don't think he wanted to stand there while Senator Kennedy was greeting Senator Clinton. And I think that was an appropriate sentiment. Unfortunately, the camera caught it in a different way, and so it got interpreted that way. And that's the kind of environment we're in right now. It's a very competitive race, so every little thing is going to be interpreted in that way. But it was really a matter of letting Senator Kennedy have his own conversation, his own greeting with Senator Clinton without him hovering over them."
Obama seems a bit immature with this behavior, which he appears to have elevated to a "personal" level.  It permeates through the campaign, where he barely acknowledged Hillary's victory in New Hampshire (basically added on top sentence to an actual victory speech) and did not even with a single word communicate any congratulatory note after the Nevada caucus, in sharp contrast to the aftermath of South Carolina, where Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton showed a lot of class and offered strong congratulatory statement that took nothing away from Obama's impressive showing in SC.
The difference seems to be a show of CLASS, which would suit Obama at this point more so than hubris or showoff.
And, as I have pointed out many, many times since Obama got into the race, there is absolutely nothing humble about Obama, which to me (and I believe many) is a turnoff.  We have gone through almost 8 years with a guy who has no humble bone in his body, and it is crass and petty in the end.
Not-so-Presidential.
Very immature.
This should certainly cost him the nomination.
Childish behavior like this has no place in government, let alone congress or The White House.
No-I think someone just compared Obama to a false god...jeeeez. We're getting really down in the gutter here. I remember the good ol' days...about 6 months ago...we were debating who could win, if the youth vote would come out, which candidated could defeat the Reps., women voters, etc. Now it's just plane hatred on both sides. I'm all for civility in Government, but how do we gt there after this, if even the voters can't be civil?
The photographer reported that Obama turned and it was his friend who a few seconds later saved him by tapping on his shoulder to engage him, as was was just standing with his back to Hillary.  If he had already waved to her, he certainly could have taken a moment to shake hands or say hello. The facial expression says a lot...a picture is worth a thousand words.  If he did not mean to snub her, than how interesting that the press has once again read more into a situation or comment BEFORE checking out the facts or imply meaning on their own.
In looking at the picture that "proves out" Obama's side of the story, look at the direction of McCaskill's eyes. She's clearly NOT looking at Obama but at Hillary and Ted's handshake.

I think this photo proves Obama's excuse was inauthentic. The unity candidate exposed.

Hillary 08
I am a Clinton supporter and I don't believe it was an intentional snub. On the other hand, based on the fact that he is looking down at the ground, I don't believe the Claire McCaskill excuse. Perhaps they spoke once he turned around, but when I am responding to someone calling my name I usually look up toward their voice, not down. My suggestion is to just leave it alone. The more you try to explain the worse it looks.
Look beyond the slogans,
Your comment about the "young" bowing down before their god is patronizing and offensive.  You might want to look in the mirror.  Just because you're old doesn't mean you're smart.  Your post (and all the rest of those that echo the same garbage) suggests otherwise.

But keep it up.  Young voters (and that includes many of us in our 30s who could run rings around you in any intellectual challenge you choose) are watching and are just as offended by these types of comments as you were by the media "piling on" Hillary in New Hampshire.
Poor Hillary got treated badly. And she treats everyone else to well.
Why even try & refute the obvious to any Cnlinton supporter. Just remember, her Main support group is the Uneducated! They can type, but Can't Read, nothing else to say.

PASS THE KLEENEX!!!!!!!!
I am an Obama supporter who voted for him in Iowa. I request my fellow Obama suppporters not to be hypocrites and try to deny something which is a fact. We should be honest to our conscience and accept a mistake. Any truthful, honest individual knows that it was a snub.

By trying to give 2 excuses like Axelrod did first and then a different one by McCaskill makes it difficult for me to support my heart, my conscience.

So I request all honest Obama supporters to accept it as a mistake and move on.
It's amazing how immature people can be.  Senator Obama said he turned to answer Clair McCaskill and she agreed.  Stop trying to make something out of nothing.  Only narrow-minded people hold on to something like this.  This country would be a better place if people major or the major and not on the minor.  Look in the mirror and tell me there is not something someone can call you on.  Stop hating and appreciate.
I don't know if this was a snub or not but it's nice to see someone point out Obama's apparent negatives. He is not above snubbing Hillary. In fact, he has done it time and time again. He doesn't even look at her when he's addressing her in the debates. He has an unwillingness to let things roll off his back. John Edwards is very different. For a man Barack harbors a grudge for far too long. His speeches are great but I wonder if he is the great unifier he makes himself out to be? Time will tell!
