Hillary declares victory

Posted: Tuesday, January 29, 2008 9:59 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
DAVIE, FL -- Hillary Clinton landed about half an hour after the polls closed in the delegate-free zone of Florida tonight, and in a six-minute speech declared her win here a "tremendous victory."

With 73% of the precincts reporting, Clinton leads Obama 50%-33%, with Edwards in third with 15%.

Tonight in South Florida, she challenged the rules of the game -- the delegate game, that is. Despite the fact the Democratic National Committee punished Florida (along with Michigan) for moving its primary up by stripping the state of all of its delegates, the Clinton camp has been arguing for days that the people of Florida must be heard. The New York senator made the same argument here.

"Thank you, Florida Democrats. You know, I could not come here to ask in person for your votes," Clinton told a noisy audience that filled a ballroom here and at times shrieked with excitement. "But I am here to thank you for your votes today. This has been a record turnout because Floridians wanted their voices to be heard on the great issues that affect our country and the world. I am thrilled to have had this vote of confidence that you have given me today, and I promise you I will do everything I can to make sure not only are Florida's Democratic delegates seated, but Florida is in the winning column for the Democrats in 2008."

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D) echoed this sentiments earlier in the evening. "Someone said that our vote doesn't count. Our votes counted in 2000; our votes counted in 2004. They counted yesterday, today, and they will count in November when we elect Hillary Clinton President of the United States."

Not so fast, say rivals. The Obama camp was already pushing back earlier today, with supporter John Kerry headlining a conference call to tell reporters that because Florida was not offering any delegates, "It should not become a spin race. It should not become a fabricated race."

The Clinton camp had scheduled an afternoon conference call to discuss seating the Florida and Michigan delegates, but postponed it until further notice.

Even so, the speakers at Clinton's brief rally tonight were on message, talking about the importance of Florida as a swing state and about how many people came out to vote in the primary.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson used the opportunity to announce his endorsement of Clinton. "So goes Florida, so goes the nation," Nelson said to wild cheers and applause. "The pundits who say that Florida doesn't count cannot ignore 2.5 million Florida Democrats that have voted today and given an overwhelming victory to Sen. Clinton. It is my privilege as a part of the Nelson family that have been personal friends of the Clintons for two decades. Our children know each other. It's my pleasure at the first opportunity that I had because of the pledge to come forth and say I endorse Hillary Clinton."

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz also said Florida will count. "Listen, America. Listen to the voice of Florida, because we have spoken loud and we have spoken clear for the next president of the United States of America, Hillary Clinton."

Clinton promised her supporters she will go on from tonight to win on Super Tuesday. "Stay with us because starting tomorrow we're going to sweep through the states across our country on to February 5th!," she said. "And, we will together, not only take back the White House, but take back our country!"

But the question as Clinton heads to Little Rock, AR tonight is how big of a deal Clinton's rivals will make over what some see as an attempt to change the rules of the game after it has begun.

AFSCME - McEntee Calls on Democrats to Seat Florida Delegates

http://www.afscme.org/press/17528.cfm
What is most important here is that almost 260,000 Florida voters chose Clinton over Obama.  She even got more votes than John McCain and considering the fact that the primary doesn't count, that says something.  John Kerrey is a loser.  If he won Florida, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in today!
Just when you thought the Clintons couldn't be bigger scumbags...
It's a load of crap for Hillary to even THINK about wanting the rules changed now that it helps her. She did the same thing in Michigan not taking her name off the ballot. She did the same thing with the lawsuit filed basically on her behalf by the teacher's union in Nevada. She can't handle not getting things her way. Don't we already have a President who acts like a spoiled little child when he doesn't get his way? Do we really want another?

Michigan and Florida didn't want to play by the rules clearly established by the DNC. They got punished. Hillary needs to not be pissed at the DNC. She needs to be pissed at these two states. The other candidates and the DNC need to be pissed at her for the tactics she's been using of late to try and change the rules of the game so late. It's unbecoming of a potential President.
The woman is certifiably nuts. She won unopposed. It's kind of like a kid that wins a medal in the Special Olympics. Everybody feels good, but it doesn't mean anything.
There is something seriously wrong with the DNC to have allowed this to happen. Who thought it would be a good idea to disenfranchise 2 whole states! They should have done what the Republicans did and just cut the delegate count in half. Then all the candidates would have campaigned and the results would not be tainted. They will deserve it if Clinton loses to McCain in November.
The final comment captures the sentiment perfectly:  Sen. Clinton is trying to change the rules of the game mid-stream.  Unfortunately, Sen. Clinton's team continues to make moves that present her as a disingenuous candidate.  These types of moves do not appeal to me as a voter, and make me more and more disenchanted with Sen. Clinton's campaign.
The simple fact is that hillary won and they lost.  this is different from michigan because all three were on the ballot.  This is a touching subject and i would advise Obama not to continue to say that florida did not count, because in that statement he is disenfranchising floridians.  That is wrong to do.  Now they will claim that hillary tried to change the rules, but it was obama that got a ad buy that aired in florida.  His supporters say well you can not get national ad buys with out airing in florida.  To that i say that he then should have waited to get the adbuy.  He was the first to break the pledge, and now that He recieved a strong rebuke from florida he will now say that they do not count.  Well perhaps all he need to do to know that they do count is talk to President Gore about 2000
Gulianna's sole claim to fame was giving NY police license to kill by which means crime in NY was cut down to reasonable size and talking on and on and on about 9/11.
I'm watching Hillary Clinton's self proclaimed victory speech in Florida and I have to tell you the women sounds a bit looney and looks altogether desperate.  This doean't bode well for someone who wants to be president.  Has the hugh South Carolina primary loss she sustained made her loose complete sanity.  Think hard about what she is doing here.  I don't know if I can vote for her anymore.  She has always had the reputation that she will say and do anything to win and this sad desperate display tonight is really unsettling.
Clinton was the only candidate to step foot in South Carolina and yet Obama won South Carolina by a significantly wider margin. I think it tells you something when half of the Democrats in a closed primary won't vote for Clinton even though she was the only one there.
It's called following the party rules Lisa.
No one should be naive about this whole issue of seating the FL delegates at the convention. The Democratic Party is not going to insult the state of FL 2 months before the most important election in a generation!  They'll seat the delegates, as well as the ones from Michigan, because the Democrats cannot toss away the electoral votes from either of those states in November.

In addition, no one can ignore the very fact that so many Democrats came out to vote in this primary, delegates or no delegates!!!  Their votes MATTER, and all three top Democratic candidates were ON THE BALLOT today.  Floridians are not on Mars... they know these candidates as well as anyone else in the country... the read... they watch TV... they didn't go off and vote without knowing who Obama and Edwards were.  They voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton, and they did it for a reason: they want her to be the next President.

Watch the returns a week from tonight.  Hillary is going to win most of the states that vote next week.  The only way Obama will be able to stop her from being the nominee is very clear now: he will have to cut a backroom deal with John Edwards to get his delegates to switch over to him.

Oh, I forgot... Obama is not THAT kind of politician.  He wouldn't do such a thing as make a backroom deal to win.

Nope.  Not Barack.

Nope.
This is crazy.  Many people will stay at home in November if Billary wins because the rules are changed mid-stream.  Florida doesn't count.  It doesn't matter.  A win in Florida, a state where Barack did not compete and Billary broke the spirit of the pledge not to campaign, does not break compare to a thumping in South Carolina
Of course she does... it's easy to claim victory when you go back on a pledge that was decided long before.  It's the only way she can take a state.  Cheating.  Oh wait!.. That is the Clinton credo!

Her next plan of attack..is to try and get the delegates to count..

Before you Hillary supporters try saying that Obama campaigned there first with 'national ads'.. Even Hillary isn't spinning that one anymore. National ads are just that...National..you can't pick and choose which states to advertise in.

And before you Floridians start saying that you have a right for your vote to count... they do...just not the delegates...So sorry... your state should have stayed with the Feb 5th super tuesday caucus.

Hillary seems to think she is above the DNC decisions.  What color is the sky in her world??

The woman is certifiably nuts. She won unopposed. It's kind of like a kid that wins a medal in the Special Olympics. Everybody feels good, but it doesn't mean anything.

It does appear that Hillary rides the short bus.
What Clinton is not saying is that she agreed to the Michigan and Florida rules.  why is she now saying she wants all votes to count.  She agreed to the rules and now she is desperate so she wants to change them mid game.  Also isn't this the candidate that wanted to take votes away from voters in Nevada when she thought she was at a disadvantage.  How transparent the Clintons are.  Hasn't American been fooled enough.
is the lady that desperate?
No body asked the people that vote in Florida or Michigan if they agreed with the rule.  Since when do political parties punish voters for wanting their voices to be heard.

Say what you want but the people are overwhelmingly in favor of allowing Florida and Michigan their rightful places at the table.  This issue will be negociated and settled and to think otherwise is absurd.

Bill Bennett a talking head on CNN tonight call the Democratic Race in Florida an "AMBUSH"!
Please send Emails to info@heritage.org  so they and Bill learn what an AMBUSH is.
WTF!!!!! I can't believe the unabashed power play - this is truly disgusting.... more divisiveness, more unscrupulousness - ALL FEB. 5TH STATES PLEASE REJECT THE CLINTON CAMPAIGN!!!!!!!! - at least get it here to Ohio where we will get the victory for Obama!!
Char Gallager... are YOU nuts???  Hillary did NOT run unopposed in FL.  Obama and Edwards were on the ballot.  Indeed, Obama's national cable TV ads aired in FL, and no one else had TV ads in the state.  So one could argue that the only one who "campaigned" in the state was Obama, because he was the only one who had TV ads running there.  But of course you Obama fanatics think that doesn't count.  It only counts that Hillary slammed him in the vote today, and you don't like it.  Well, get used to it.  You're gonna be in for a big shocker one week from now, too.
Just when you think the Clintoons can't come up with anything more ghastly, they do this. SNL couldn't write better material.
MSNBC, please report and not editorialize. Your blatant hatred of Hilary Clinton is disgusting.  All of the democratic candidates held fundraisers in Florida.  Your article that states "Still, Clinton winked at that pledge, holding two closed fundraisers in recent days and scheduling a rally with supporters after the polls closed in Florida,"  makes it sound like she was breaking the rules and all of the other candidates followed the rules.  The rules specifically stated that the candidates could hold fundraisers.  You have made your reporting so slanted towards Obama, that I do not think I can view your website any longer.  I used to love your articles, but you need to rename your website Wewilldoeverythinginourpower,evenmakeupthenews,soObamawillbepresident.com instead of msnbc.com.
Sorry guys--even if this is just a beauty contest, Clinton has almost 300,000 more votes.  That means 300,000 more people prefer her to Obama.  How can than not mean anything?  Even Donna Brazile who was just on CNN says it is a big moral boost for Clinton.  The way you people talk it seems as if you think she was pulling the lever in the voting booth.  I can assure you if she had won only by a little bit, the Obama people would be spinning this.  Florida has demographics much closer to the BIG states on Super Tuesday.  February 5th is just around the corner!  GO HILLARY!
What's the matter Hillary, starving for a little attention?
It's clear that the white voter support of Hillary in FL will NOT be questioned like the African-American support of Obama in SC.
Hillary should read the polls - the people who made up their minds in the past month voted for Obama.  When people pay attention to the race, they choose Obama.  On to Super Tuesday.

HRC can take some consolation that a lot of CA voters have already voted absentee and that she won those voters 53-30.
hey come on. everybody knew that this primary season was getting crazy. somebody had to say enuf is enuf. be the grown ups if you will. how many Dems stayed home because the vote didn't translate into delegates? it's totally unrepresentative and undemocratic to "count it now"
Just heard something interesting on the news. Clinton won big in the early voting, but tonight's vote was actually much closer than polling.

Not that it matters. For anyone who wants to look at this objectively, Clinton started off with something that could be called an organization in Florida through previous contacts. Obama didn't have this. Campaigning is more than rallies - we didn't get to see a head-to-head competition of organizational abilities, in which Obama has thus far been able to cut significantly in some states and even overcome in others huge initial leads for Clinton.

There was an unofficial shadow group - Florida for Hillary. It wasn't affiliated with the Clinton campaign officially, but it clearly was operating where I don't believe Obama had any such group.

And still there's indications that Clinton's campaign was involved in Florida - most notably from reports that they were scoping out rally sites in Miami, though never pulled the trigger on that one. But then all the references to the state by Clinton and her surrogates over the past week.

And clearly someone provided all the signs and stuff for the non-campaign victory party.
"It's kind of like a kid that wins a medal in the Special Olympics. Everybody feels good, but it doesn't mean anything."

Except to the kid that won......

Everyone was on the ballot....people voted for their choice.  And while the majority may have voted for a person that is not your choice, there is no denying the fact that Clinton won.  Forget the delegates and the spin....she won.
I am very P'd off about your coverage of your coverage of Hillary Clinton.  I worked for Joan Finney (the First Deomcratic Gov) as her Legislative Rep) You guys are forgetting Al Gore.  She will be the one that takes the nation forwoar.  Save the earth but save America first.  Please call me for details.Rick Loveall, Wichita, KS. 316/409-7500.
She'll steal an election anyway she can. This disgusting sense of dynastic entitlement that drives her campaign is what keeps politics mired in cynicism. The Clintons don't fight fair and they never have, Obama comparable to Jesse Jackson? God help us if this woman gets the nomination. Especially considering the field of Republicans running...
Forget all the loons Hillary, you'll get those delegates! Take it to court if you have to. You deserve everyone of those delegates at the convention. Just because Obama was to stupid not to campaign in Flordia doesn't mean you couldn't campaign there. Way to trick Obama by showing up at the last minute. The guy is a little dense and slow off the mark, if you know what I mean, and I know you do. And Bill is not a racist! And even if he is, so what, you are our Royality!!

Hillary '08
She is so pathetic, truly she has no shame.

I got a fundraising call from the DNC this evening .  I told them I'd give the maximum if Barack Obama is the nominee.  It's true, I will. But if it's Hillary, not one dime.
Anybody who thinks those delegates are not going to be seated is out of his ever loving mind. As I said before, the DEMOCRATIC party is not going to write off Florida and Michigan in a close election. and despite of the huge advantage the democrats had earlier because they did not have to defend Bush, they are rapidly losing it with their stupid arguements. McCain is now the presumptive republican nominee and his reputation alone will make this a close one again. The democrats simply can not afford to write off those two states.
The candidates agreed to abide by the rules and limits laid out by the DNC. They ALL pledged to this. However, in typical Clinton fashion, Hillary decided that she didn't like the rules any more because they didn't suit her purposes now. So, she just ignored them and then pretends that everyone else is wrong by abiding to them. This is so purely Clintonesque that I am sure even us non-politicos in rural America see it for what it is. She made an agreement and then lied about it and changed it after the fact. Now that might be a recommendation to some for presidential "experience" but for me, I have had it with this sort of thing. If you give your word on something, abide by it. If she can't abide by her word on this, what makes anyone out there think she is telling the truth in her campaign promises? Selective lying and rules adherence is what we don't need any more of....Dang, who is she using for campaign advice now? Alberto Gonzales???? Sad part is, she would use him or anybody else if she thought she could win. I like to win also, but if it means dropping to even lower standards for presidential conduct than we have now, I will not only accept defeat, but welcome it. If we Dems can't do any better than Hillary, good luck to McCain.
Clinton did run oppposed...She ran opposed obama and edwards. Check cnn!!
I guess you do these things if you are desperate for attention.
The woman is certifiably nuts. She won unopposed. It's kind of like a kid that wins a medal in the Special Olympics. Everybody feels good, but it doesn't mean anything.

Hillary Clinton Floridians, do not realize when they are being used? If she was not leading in the polls, do you really believe that she would be down there fighting to make sure that your voices get heard? Hillary Clinton is so phony. She is down there pretending that she really cares about Floridians and its disgusting. The sad part is that you fools actually believe her. No wonder you guys allow the Republicans to win your state every year. You guys don't pay attention and are easily duped. How many of you fools voted for George Bush or did not vote at all the last two elections?
Howard Dean is The Man behind the DNC. Billary opperative Terry McCaulif, was booted Out as Chairman. Against the wishes of the Party, in 2006, Dean went with the Now forgotten 50 State strategy. Democrat's retook Both houses of Congress. You can Bet The Farm, he see's all this Red State Support for Barack. All 3 branches of Government Owned by the DEMOCRAT"S. Howard Dean is Not gonna let That pass-by.

Howard Dean, Ted Kennedy, Then President Clinton. That's the Food Chain. Don't Forget It !!!!!!!

Barack Obama for President!!!
OMG, how is Senator Obama going to explain this

http://link.brightcove.com/services/link/bcpid353515028/bctid1396506113

This is unbelievable.  I am in tears
Clinton has ZERO Integrity , this Florida thing will hurt her just like her scum bag acts in SC did.

She is George Bush in a pant suit , opens her mouth and another Lie comes out.
I totally agree that the media is behaving with total bias against Hillary Clinton. I'm not one of conspiracy theories, but it has been so painfully obvious the last 2 weeks.

While there are no 'delegates' in Florida, it is wrong to disenfranchise over 2.5 million voters (more than all the prior states). Pundits (and some Clinton haters) are acting as though the voices of 'the people' don't matter. That's wrong and undermines democracy.

Obama's campaign has been less than 'gracious' these last few days, and it is not very attractive for someone running on a platform of 'hope', 'civility' and a 'new politic'.

Obama was the ONLY candidate to run ads in the state (as he did here in Michigan) with his sly deal with CNN (we can only run them nationally).

Finally, these 210 delegates mostly likely WILL be seated at the Dem Convention in Denver, so they "do" matter.
Hillary and Bill are two of the biggest drama queens the world has ever known. They are like two spoiled eight year olds at a birthday party that aren't getting enough attention. Now they have to make a scene over nothing to get people to pay attention to them. Pathetic.
Clinton spin machine starts in three, two, oops, already started.

No one lost Senator Clinton, Senator Obama and Senator Edwards are all tied in Flordia Delegates

0 for Hillary 0 Barack and 0 for Edwards
Ben, all of the candidates campaigned in South Carolina. John Edwards is from there and Obama practically moved in.
I won't watch MSNBC anymore because of all the "Hillary-hating Pundits" on the network. The only show I will watch is Dan Abrams, who treats ALL the candidates fairly.
