Romney's swan song?

Posted: Wednesday, January 30, 2008 10:16 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd
There were a few moments where it appeared McCain and Romney would really started tangling in tonight's CNN/L.A. Times/Politico debate, but it was just that, a precious few moments.

Romney wasn't happy about the criticism McCain leveled at him about timetables in Iraq. He said it was a dirty trick because it came days before Florida. Well, maybe so, but it should also serve as a comfort to nervous Republicans about McCain's ability to play hardball in the general. McCain may seem like a guy who likes to reach across the aisle but he's not afraid to get dirty. McCain will be a very clever general election candidate; it won't all be kumbaya with Clinton or Obama.

Romney's pushback, btw, that if this was an issue, then why didn't he raise it earlier, wasn't a great debate comeback moment. As I've noted before, Romney just doesn't come across well when he's angry.

Overall, Romney seemed simply ticked off. It was as if he realized the end was near and he didn't know how to stop it. He tried to go after McCain, politely mind you, but didn't trip the newly crowned frontrunner up.

The question Romney must be asking himself is what is his ultimate goal now? Should he do everything he can to stop McCain now or should he figure out how to run, but do so with dignity so he can keep his options open in the future, should McCain fail to win the general. As McCain is about to prove, the GOP regularly nominates the runners-up in previous primaries; Reagan, Bush and Dole to name a few. Romney, though, does need to play the conservative critic of McCain for a certain length of time in order to win the loyalty of the conservatives who aren't happy with McCain now. These folks could serve Romney well in '12 or '16.

McCain, in the role of frontrunner at a debate for the first time in nearly a year (well, actually, since the last time these guys met at the Reagan Library), proved to be more well spoken on domestic issues than he was at the last debate.

Going forward, assuming McCain is the GOP nominee, the Arizona Republican is going to have to get more comfortable talking about domestic issues or he will face much bigger problems in the general.  He was better tonight on the domestic front, but he's still got a ways to go.

BTW, I love this spin from McCain that if his tax cut plan had gotten through in 2001, instead of Bush's, he would be able to propose new tax cuts now. Now there's some optimism!

The most difficult thing for many of us watching these debates for a living is that we're having a hard time finding new things to say just as the candidates are having a hard time saying anything new.

For instance, how many times have I written some version of the following: Mike Huckabee probably stuck out for his humor and seemingly straight talk. Yet again, Huckabee got to play Mr. Nice Guy and it will probably be enough to siphon off conservative vote from Romney in order to deliver McCain a few more delegates than he should be winning if this were a pure 1-on-1.

But McCain may have won this debate before it ever started because the Giuliani endorsement today and the Schwarzenegger endorsement tomorrow appear to be trumping anything that happened tonight.

Once again, the media gets it wrong. As the focus group on both Fox and CNN attest, Romney did great. He may not win but McCain looked small and snarky. If he gets the nomination its Bob Dole all over again. By the way MSNBC, since your all democrats and proud of it, dont pretend to be objective and knowledgeable. You consistently get it wrong when it comes to Republican primaries because you dont like or understand conservatives. This network is a joke.
This article disgusts me.  It shows the typical media bias that suits their own needs and is no where near a true reflection of reality.  Romney is a stong and viable candidate who stands a great chance of winning the nomination.  The media, in a relentless attempt to sway the minds of the general public, continues to write daily obituaries for Mitt Romney's campaign.  Again, this article disgusts me.
Chuck must have seen a different debate than the rest of America. I've searched many of the web comments about the debate and Romney is by far the winner in the debate. I'd say 97% are in agreement with Romney and have definetly decided against McCaim. McCaim was angry and tongue-tied and simply couldn't answer the questions because he doen't have a clue about anything in our economy or anything else.Mitt Romney was and is brilliant, tactful and respectable. McCain simply is not. When we vote for Mitt Romney we are helping our country be successful just like Mitt.
Your bias for McCain is showing. Every blog I had read from the real time forum showed that McCain lost miserably, but keep trying to spin it...People are seeing thru it...Romney clearly was the winner!
Romney won this debate hands down as he has everprevioebate. The  The only thing McCain has is name recognition and the fact that you media wussies have treated him like your kindly --albeit surly -- old grandfather. Though I suspect in the general election you won't be so kind. But thats ok. If the benighted Republicans are intent on nominating their worst candidate, they deserve to lose.
I think the one time rebate will be just a short term fix.  After the rebate is spent families are in the same financial hardship as why were before the check arrived.  If you really want to help the families struggling with the higher cost of everything.  Do something that will give families long term financial relief.  Government has alot of control over 401-k accounts.  Give the American people the opportunity to NOT pay back their current 401-k loan (s) they have.  This would allow families to pay the higher cost of groceries, morgages, gas etc. and the American people may even have some extra money to start re-investing in the stock market/in our country again.  This would at least be a long term fix to help the American families with this recession.
Romney was the most presidential in this debate as well as the others. He answered questions and revealed the depth of his understanding of the issues. McCain seemed like a tired and slightly irked old man. Huckabee was entertaining and I agree with much of what he says, but I agree with almost everything that Romney says, and he says it very well. It pleased me to see Romney mixing it up with McCain; he showed him up several times when all McCain could do was sit quietly and smile.
Honestly, does Huck. have a chance in this any more? After McCain gets the Governator's endorsemen, and with Romney easing up on the TV ads and campaign schedule, is there any chance for Mike to catch the Iron Horse?
I really like Governor Huckabee's connection with what matters to most Americans. He cares about life of unborn, purity and sanctity of marriage for our children's futures, a real and lasting conservative education, and balancing the budget while reducing our taxes, even when faced with 90% democratic representatives like he did in clinton's state. I was very disappointed with all the time cnn kept giving romney over huckabee, despite the known fact that all polls show Governor Huckabee beating mitt romney on the high delegate states like Georgia, Tenn, Alabama, Oklahoma and Missouri, while romney loses the other bigger states (NY, NJ, CA, ...) to Senator Mccain. cnn should have more respect for us national voters on a national debate before the major primary and not try to manipulate voters by taking away the time Governor Huckabee deserved with his high second place current national ranking.
I am very sad . Romney is the only one whom I trust.
McCain is a wrong candidate .Our country needs a
strong leader. We all have children and Romney is
a right person for the future of our country .
Vote for McCain is like vote for Hilary .
Why in the world should I be "comforted" that someone is willing to play hardball at the expense of telling the truth?  Especially one who touts he is committed to using "straigh talk?"  Kumbaya or not, it should be entirely disconcerting that John McCain is so willing to distort the facts and misrepresent someone elses viewpoint at the expense of his own integrity.  Anyone who has gone back and examined not only the "timetables and milestones" quote made by Mitt Romney in April regarding the war in Iraq, but quotes by Romney on other occassions regarding the war in Iraq will find that Romney's position is clearly and in fact time after time consistent in that he supports staying in Iraq until great stability and measurable success is attained and the Iraqi people are on solid footing.  For McCain to use a partial quote and to present it so out of context shows anything but straight talk.  In fact, it's downright scary that he could be so brash in distorting the facts.  Just at a time when I was trying to come to terms with accepting John McCain as a front runner, I find myself seeing more and more McCain's true colors and I don't like what I see.  I hope the media and the American people will consider carefully the ramifications of electing someone who is so casual and seeminly unabashed at distorting the truth at the expense of another.
What does "BTW" stand for?
"He said it was a dirty trick because it came days before Florida. Well, maybe so, but it should also serve as a comfort to nervous Republicans about McCain's ability to play hardball in the general."

He also said, along with every journalist, that it was a LIE. Yeah, that's really the kind of GOP nominee we want. A complete jerk who can lie and twist the truth to weasel away with a win. Straight talk my eye...
Chuck...I don't know what debate you were watching but both CNN and FOX control groups picked Romney as the winner of tonights debate hands down, and that McCain sounded like the angry, arrogant old man he is. He wasn't a tuff candadant in Florida, he was a lier, and a hypocrite who laughingly you and the other media mooches keep calling the "Straight Talk Express". Mark these words Todd....McCain has no chance what so ever of winning in November. He looks and sounds like the old man he is and will be another Bob Dole....Slaughtered. Just imagine for a minute, McCain and Gomer Huckabee, against Obama and/or Hillary....not a pretty picture. Our party won't recover from this poor choice for our candadant any time soon.
I hope you all realize that we really will have Bill Clinton as President again if Hillary is elected. My stomach hurts at the thought of it. Bill will take over her Senate seat - that will give him official capacity and then he will be able to act as the co-President more easily. Vote for Obama - he is substantive (see his website for full disclosure of all policies) - experienced but not establishment - smart and moral. He also knows how to listen to people who do not agree with him. I doubt that you can say that about John McCain.   The debate tonight gave us a tiny taste of what kind of person he is.  Just imagine how he handles people who go up against him when no one is looking.  Not pretty.

"If Hillary Clinton wins the White House, Spitzer would likely appoint a fellow Democrat to take over her Senate seat. So far, speculation about potential successors has focused on New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose father once held the same Senate seat.  But Spitzer could just as easily appoint Bill Clinton, who, under New York law, would fill his wife’s Senate seat through 2010. A special election would then be held, and the winner would serve the final two years of her term, which expires in 2012." Feb 18, 2007 9:57 PM by Bill Sammon, The Examiner
McCain is a mean man, a liar and a liberal. This is one guy who's going to vote for Obama (even though he doesn't say anything, and is also a liberal, I'm just hoping that he'll deal with the 5 generations of handouts to his fellow African Americans, and change them)over McCain. A Mitt supporter who will cross the lines, just to see what this guy who talks about change is all about.I have a feeling change is a code word for higher taxes, more handouts, etc.
what happens to the delegates of the candidates who fall out?
McCain is a joke.  How could he have won this debate?  I remember a question in which he was asked how he could be a leader for the economy.  He did not even TOUCH on the question.  Instead, he answered by saying something to the effect of: "The main problem in radical islam".  Blah blah blah.  That is ALL the man talks about.  I'm sorry, but he is not a "straight talker".  Instead he avoids questions and repeats himself over and over again. Come on John!
Your analysis here is weak and not representative of viewers. Romney came off much better in the Iraq exchange as McCain was caught in a lie. For a self-proclaimed "straight shooter" he shot himself in the foot. It was McCain who looked angry and spiteful throughout the debate. It's going to be tough for the conservative base to get behind him.
I, as well as millions of my fellow citizens, will not vote for Flipper Mitt nor John McPain. Both are a joke and should not even be considered Republicans. We had a true conservative candidate in this race that 90+% of us could have supported and voted for. For the next 4 years my bumper sticker will read: "Don't blame me I voted for Fred" which I will do in a few days. Get ready to say, "President Clinton" once again. Republicans are a sorry lot to call either one of the remaining candidates their nominee. Looks like the only choice the American people will have is a liberal with a D behind their name or a liberal with an R behind it. Really, what's the difference?
Obviously Chuck Todd has no idea what people thought about the debate tonight. All of the message boards are full of comments about how well Romney and Huckabee did and how poorly McCain looked tonight.
There were four, yes four, candidates on that stage.  And yet, only two of them were allowed by the CNN moderators to dominate the air time.  Each candidate should have been allowed to speak with the same relative amount of time.

Huckabee is polling first in many states, and second in many national polls.  This was the man who won Iowa in the first caucus! Why was he not allowed to participate in the same way that Romney and McCain were?
I agree with all those who are saying we need to stop splitting the conservative vote.  PLEASE if you want to see a conservative in the White House, switch to Huckabee!  It's time for the true conservatives to rally around the most conservative candidate left... which is Huckabee.  See for yourself who is more conservative, by their record and on the ISSUES, at the independent site OnTheIssues.org.
UNRELATED COMMENT:

Bill Richardson to endorse Obama on Friday in New Mexico. Slick Willie making emergency visit there today in vain attempt to thwart endorsement. This is all the information I have.

In all seriousness, how can people say that we need to rally around the "conservative" Romney in order to stop McCain?

Romney is a conservative of convenience.  Just three years ago he was rated National RINO #8 by Human Events magazine, for his liberal stances on gay marriage, abortion rights, state-mandated health care, gun rights and more.

Now we're supposed to believe he's a rock-ribbed conservative?

Huckabee is the MOST conservative candidate left standing, and has been consistently so.  In particular on the issues of LIFE which are the foundation of our culture, he is solid to the core.

In spite of the largely-Romney-funded attacks on his character as being a "liberal", more and more conservatives are realizing who their best candidate is.  Again, look at objective sources like OnTheIssues.org which describe Huckabee as a "hard-core conservative" and have him to the RIGHT of Romney.

Think for yourselves... research for yourselves... and come to your own conclusion.  I have decided to ignore the pundits this time around and vote the way my own research and thought have led me... for Mike Huckabee.
One has to wonder why the Arkansas Huckster would deliberately siphon off votes from Romney. John "falsetalk" McCain will be crushed in November. Oh well, 4 years of Hillary before we can have a real republican nominee that we will support is a small price to pay and just may help drive the Republican party back to its roots.
Swan song? This is a once in a lifetime, one of a kind, presidential election. When discussing this election, please use the phrase "free-for-all".
There are a lot of holes in the profile of John McCain that the Democratic nominee, and to some extent Mr. Romney, could rip through them, and provided many people would like to listen and think! In the Republican debate he really looked terrible.  His stance on Iraq is based on a set of fabrications (WMD) and distortions (Qaida). There were no weapons of mass destruction and Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11. Also, the main objectives of the so called "surge" were not met. Would any judicious person doubt that the US can militarily make Iraq quiet? The US has enough weapons and spends more than 500 billion Dollars on its military budget; on the other hand Iraq is a backward third world country with rife illiteracy and poverty, and which has no army to defend itself. So, it is pathetic to brag about success in these circumstances and when such war should have never happened in the first place.  Finally, would the status of prisoner of war make a person a war hero?
I thought McCain looked insane when he was deciding how Mitt felt about laying in the weeds. He is too old.
Am I the only person who saw McCain start to cry when Rudy endorsed him?  If Romney had cried it would have been all over the front page of every paper as a sign of weakness.  For McCain it just means that he is old and frail inside where it counts.  I am scared of MCain.  If he gets the nomination I will not vote.  Two democrats running in the general election will destroy our country.  McCain cannot admit to making a mistake.  He is a war monger.  Go Mitt Go
You know - what isn't mentioned in most analysis is McCain's disdain for businesspeople. He believes profit is evil - why couldn't have Romney remind McCain that without profit (creation)there is no distribution (taxes from profit). Also, McCain stated that he never flip flops. However, in this debate he now claims that he would not even vote for his 2006 immigration bill? Without a doubt McCain sounded and looked like an old mean spirited Washington crony.
This issue on how Romney acted is critical.  it shows how he avoided taking a position on the surge until after he could determine if it would work.  When he was called on it, he said he didn't have to have a firm position at the time, because he was a govenor, and this was a federal issue.  Then he later in the debate actually tries to float out the spin that governors are better qualified to be president because they are "leaders".  In fact, this whole episode shows why McCain would be a beter president:  When the time to support a critical decision came up, he stood up and put his career on the line for the good of the country.  When it paid off, Romney tried to rewrite history and jump on the bandwagon.  As an "outsider" Romney is sure an expert at old style political spin!  The problem is, the position of president demands an ability to make the calls based upon a moral backbone.  If a president has this, like McCain, I feel we are in good hands.
John McCain won because, like him or not, agree with him or not, people trust him.  He admits his mistakes.  And, he is well within the decent, hard-working mainstream of Americans.  Romney wears his ambition on his sleeve.  He wants to be President.  McCain understands how Washington works and wants to lead this country forward by tackling the tough issues we face - social security, health care, national security, and immigration.  Voters can see the difference between someone offering ideas and being to take risks, and someone who has spent the campaign season simply attacking his opponent.  Americans want the battle-tested squadron leader, not the slick consultant.
Help us Mr. Todd!

The reason it's so hard to find new things to talk about is because moderators like Cooper keep asking the same tabloid journalism questions over and over again. To help sharpen their skills here's a list of potential questions Americans would like the answer to:
> How would you do to re-energize the hunt for Osama Bin Laden?
> Do you consider Iran and North Korea "Evil"?
> Besides abortion rights, how would you go about choosing a Supreme Court nominee?
> What would you do to address the continuing monopolies and oligopolies in key coomodities such as steel and Aluminum? Would you offer incentives for American companies to get into these markets to stop the reliance on foreign producers?
> What would you fo about the rising conflict in Kenya?

Please help the American people really understand these candidates instead of them just repeating talking points and the list of supporters! Thank you.
I'm a McCain man and yes he won the back and forths with Romney. But he paid a price. He seemed grouchy, vindictive, even a little haughty. The visual disparity between his size and Romneys was staggering. And he should NEVER talk with a pen in his hand. Visions of Bob Dole.
I found McCain to be extremely offputting in this debate.  He was smug, smirky and wrapped in his cloak of war hero.  For the true economic conservative this man is a disaster.  He will lead straight down the Bush road to bankruptcy.
Chuck,
Did you watch the same debate the rest of the country watched? Did you see a tired old man rather arrogantly agreeing to lead the grand OLD party? Can you imagine a general election debate with Obama or Hillary? We will have an 8 year blackout, like Bob Dole and then see if we can win. This from someone who has voted GOP since Nixon. Not this year with McCain
I find it frustrating that McCain is going to be the Republican nomination.  He's a joke!  He has no energy, all he ever says in response to every question is that he was a foot soldier for the Reagan Revolution and that's about it.  He won't be able to make it a few years if he were elected due to his age and the stress of the job, and then on top of all of that, he's a life long politician, not someone who understands what needs to be done other than keep the surge going in Iraq.  It's just ridiculous.  He can give no specifics of what he wants to do on anything besides Iraq.  He just lobs answers out there like, I'm a foot soldier, I will make it better, I will do good things, etc.  I think he'll be the nominee and this bothers me.  This guy was in Wedding Crashers for goodness sakes.  What kind of Republican President (if it comes to that) would appear in a movie like that!!!
No matter how much he spends Mitt can't fun from his record. He is not honest and he is a conservative only in presidenbtial elections.

This is still a three person race. Conservatives to not have to have McCain. Huckabee is a legitimate conservative and very electable. Romney is not. (Money can't buy you like-ability)

Huckabee:
Is now, always was pro life.
Is now, always was pro second amendment.
Is now, always was pro tenth amendment.
Is now, always was pro family and anti government intervention
Is now, always was pro strict constructionist judges
Is now, always was pro main street and anti regulation and litigation.
Is now, always was pro fence and anti sanctuary cities.
Is now, always lower taxes (FAIR tax frees up working capital, makes us more competitive in a global economy, and abolishes the IRS).
Is now, always was an experienced governor.
Is now, always a very effective communicator.

Think about it. It isn't over until it is over.

Looks like this guy is auditioning to be McCain's press secretary. McCain came across to me as a vindictive, pompous airbag.

Todd, too bad you're under a gag order not to talk about Ron Paul. You and your fellow MSM shills should be ashamed of yourself with the unfairness of your coverage.
Romney should have said that other than McCain's heroic military service, he is a disgrace to the Republican Party.  McCain is not a "good republican," he is moderate at best who opposed the Bush tax cuts twice. McCain is for allowing illegals amnesty.  He helped block President Bush's Federal Judges with the gang of 14. It looks like the republicans are going to choose McCain.  No surprise that the Governor of California endorses McCain either, as Arnold is just as much as a liberal as McCain is.  We needed someone more aggressive than Romney. Romney was a true conservative, but he did not know how to fight for what was right. I will be voting democrat in November. It's the only way I can help save my beloved republican party.  McCain is no conservative, and has no right to claim any allegiance with the great President Regan.
Mr. Todd, I hope you are wrong about Gov Romney.
Choosing between McCain & Hillary will be a disaster.  This will be the first time in 40 years that I will not vote for a presidential candidate.
I cannot in good conscience.  McCain and Hillary are both untrustworthy and vindictive.  Not the traits that you want in a leader.
Gov Romney, now, is our only hope for economic strength and freedom around the world.
I am amazed at how little you so-called experts know what is actually going on in middle-America.  Maybe you should interview someone outside of New York and California.  It is obvious that the News Media is trying to dictate who should win (McCain or Romney).  Guess what, conservatives don't trust Romney.  He is John Kerry light.  Huckabee is the only true conservative, and I hope people don't listen to the media.  If they don't and vote on the issues, Mike Huckabee will do very well on Feb. 5.  He has a better chance of being 2nd in delegates more than Romney.  No way Romney wins in the south.  Bank on it!
God bless John McCain!!!! I hope he wins big next Tuesday........
The reason you are having difficulty "finding new things to say" about the candidates is because these stupid election campaigns go on for too darned long!

All of these clowns started traipsing around my home state of New Hampshire nearly 3 years ago! Then there were the non-stop political ads on TV, and then my telephone rang off the hook for nearly a month prior to the actual primary.  It got to the point where I didn't dare answer the phone for fear of having to tell yet another pollster to take a hike.

We ought to look at the way Canada runs their elections.  There, once Parliament dissolves, the candidates have just a month or so to run for their seats.  Then the election is held, and the party who wins the most seats in the House of Commons gets to run the Government.  Period.

Of course, the REAL reason our elections drag on for so long is because, like everything else in this country, elections have now been taken over by hopelessly corrupt media corporations (like yours) who are making BIG BUCKS (to the tune of Trillions (with at "T") dollars out of it all.

Only when elections stop being "big business" will you and your compatriots have something "new" to talk about on the campaign trail.
I must have viewed a different debate than Mr. Todd.  McCain is the mainstream media darling, of course.  McCain has a Mexican official serving in his campaign and, yet, he insists that we believe that he will secure the border.  U.S. citizens do not want the Kennedy-McCain-Bush Amnesty Plan for illegals!!  Mitt Romney's demeanor clearly out-classed McCain last night.
Thank you Obama supporters for electing John McCain the next president. You are also I suspect the ones who elected George Bush in 2000 by falling for the baloney that Bush and Gore were the same and therefore justifying your vote for Nadar.  Where are you Michael Moore, Phil Donahue, Susan Sarandon, and Mr. Sarandon now?

Again I call upon ALL Clinton supporters to pledge to vote Republican in the fall if Saint Barack is the nominee of our party.  Believe me the Obama lovers are thinking the same thing if Hillary is the nominee.

Hillary DESERVED (YES DESERVED) the nomination as long as Al Gore wasn't running.  And don't tell me that no one deserves it, you have to earn it, yeah sure.

But now the media has fallen in love with this 2-bit nobody Obama and created the atmosphere whereby even if Hillary were to win the nomination it would be worthless.

Since you can bet your last nickel that the Repugs will win in the fall anyway, I say pledge now to vote against Saint Barack.

I am trying to get Clinton supporters to pledge a vote against Obama.  Please email only if you concur to:

I for one am getting a little tired of I led a squadron or whatever he led in the Navy being the answer to everything.  He actually used that when asked a question about the economy, what the hell does that have to do with the enconomy.  In the military all the people below you are required to follow your orders, and that may serve well for the Commander in Chief, but guess what, congress doesn't have to obey your every command, nor do the American people.
Chuck Todd,

Your take it pathetic.  You are SO BIASED!  McCain was the one who looked bad last night.

But you, the media have made your decision on who will be president.

John Edwards/Rudy Guiliani/etc are NOT Kingmakers.  The MEDIA is!
