MoveOn, CA SEIU to endorse Obama

Posted: Friday, February 01, 2008 11:46 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Chuck Todd and Domenico Montanaro
NBC News has learned the MoveOn.org PAC and the California SEIU will endorse Obama.

The 600,000-member union had been behind Edwards and has now moved to Obama -- the second reported union to do so. NBC News reported yesterday afternoon that the 200,000-member Transportation Workers Union was set to switch from Edwards to Obama today as well, now that the former North Carolina Senator has suspended his campaign.

MoveOn Endorsement Throws Progressive Weight
Behind Barack Obama
3.2 Million Members Nationwide Mobilize to Get Out the Progressive Vote for Senator Obama

Group Has Over 1.7 Million Members In Super Tuesday States

In a resounding vote today, MoveOn.org Political Action's members nationwide voted to endorse Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for President. The group, with 3.2 million members nationwide and over 1.7 million members in Super Tuesday states, will immediately begin to mobilize on behalf of Senator Obama. The vote favored Senator Obama to Senator Clinton by 70.4% to 29.6%.

Senator Obama accepted the endorsement stating:

"In just a few years, the members of MoveOn have once again demonstrated that real change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up. From their principled opposition to the Iraq war - a war I also opposed from the start - to their strong support for a number of progressive causes, MoveOn shows what Americans can achieve when we come together in a grassroots movement for change. I thank them for their support and look forward to working with their members in the weeks and months ahead."

Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's Executive Director, issued the following statement on the group's endorsement:

"Our members' endorsement of Senator Obama is a clear call for a new America at this critical moment in history. Seven years of the disastrous policies of the Bush Administration have left the country desperate for change. We need a President who will bring to bear the strong leadership and vision required to end the war in Iraq, provide health care to every American, deal with our climate crisis, and restore America's standing in the world. The enormity of the challenges require someone who knows how to inspire millions to get involved to change the direction of our country, and someone who will be willing to change business as usual in Washington. Senator Barack Obama has proved he can and will be that President.

"With 3.2 million members nationwide and over 1.7 million members in states that vote next Tuesday, we'll be able to immediately jump into action in support of Senator Obama's candidacy. We've learned that the key to achieving change in Washington without compromising core values is having a galvanized electorate to back you up. And Barack Obama has our members 'fired up and ready to go' on that front.

"We congratulate Sens. Clinton, Dodd and Biden, former Senator Edwards, Governor Richardson, Congressman Kucinich and former Senator Gravel on running tremendous campaigns. We thank them for their contributions to the important debate that has gripped our nation and for their ongoing engagement with our members. We're looking forward to working together to bring progressive values to the nation's capitol and to end this disastrous war in Iraq. MoveOn members are committed to putting a Democrat in the White House in 2008 and ushering in a new era of progressive values no matter who wins the nomination."

MoveOn members' comments in the vote reflect the reasons they support Senator Obama:

"Obama's grassroots organizing experience and unifying message combine to show he will work for working people and speak to a broad cross section of the American public. We need this," said Linda Blong of Penngrove, CA.

"There are defining moments in our nation's political history and this is one of them. Barack Obama appeals to the very BEST of the American Spirit," said Estina Baker, Hackensack, NJ

"Barack Obama represents CHANGE in so many levels. He brings HOPE that America can, again, be respected by the rest of the world and that Americans can be proud, again, of our leaders!" Isabelle Mollien, Denver, CO

"Obama has the ability to draw people to him, to energize people who generally don't vote, to create an atmosphere of long-overdue possibility around himself and what he could bring to the office. It is my belief that he can re-establish the lost connection between the American people and their leader, and put our country back on course to be a positive force in the world." Matthew Smith in Columbus, OH

MoveOn's endorsement means a fresh infusion of people-power for Obama in the critical days before Super Tuesday. MoveOn will immediately connect thousands of progressive activists into the Obama GOTV volunteer operation. It will also use the same cutting-edge computer-based phone program that made 7 million GOTV calls for Democrats in 2006 to allow MoveOn members to call other MoveOn members in Feb. 5 states and encourage them to vote for Obama.

Today's endorsement is the first time MoveOn.org has endorsed a candidate for President in the Democratic primary. Over the past year, MoveOn surveyed a rotating sample of 30,000 members each week to determine their membership's preference in the Democratic presidential primary. For months, MoveOn members were divided among many candidates -- as many waited to see who would take bold progressive positions on the issues. As the primary race has gained momentum, the polling showed a consensus forming and, with Senator John Edward's withdrawal from the race, members made their decision in favor of Senator Obama. The vote took place from Thursday, January 31st to Friday, February 1st.

Oh, what a shocker. The extreme far left endorses Obama. So, let me see, the far left and the far right are attacking Hillary. Hmmm... me thinks its payback time. Vote for Hillary and we will get the White House back for the dems for at least 8 yrs. If she picks Obama, he can get 8 more. Now that is an American dream.
So, this makes Hillary a moderate and a moderate should be in the White House. Its gonna be Clinton against McCain and she will win. McCain is way too old-70 and looks 85. She will be our next president.
YAY!

Obama '08
WOW!  This is huge!  Obama 08!!!!!
Yay!
With all this Union support it should really raise expectations for Barry in Cali, thus his crushing defeat will be even sweeter for Clinton backers, not to mention even more depressing for Chuck(les) and Co.
Good Choice!

OBAMA 0/8
This is great. Who wants someone sitting on the board of WalMart while other board members were fighting unions and women? She never said a thing, but made sure she did not mention WalMart in her bio. Now she is running on 35 years of experience, starting when she was 25, so this one is in.

Wow.  I really didn't expect the Move On endorsement, because they required a 66% threshold in order to endorse.  This is impressive, and it's going to help Obama sustain the momentum.
Hillary is gonna be pissed..... Poor Bill
CA independents take note: The CA democratic party allows you to vote in their primary (the GOP does not) but you must REQUEST A DEMOCRATIC BALLOT at your polling place.  If you do not request the dem ballot, you will recieve a generic one with just state and local propositions on it, no presidential primary ballot.
I believe you can see the trend around the country as people are recognizing Barack Obama is the "best bet" to beat a John McCain!
Two polls out today bring comforting news to Clinton who is holding firm in Massachusetts and in New Jersey, entirely on the strength of her MASSIVE lead among women. Check both polls: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/02/in-morning-with-frustratingly-few-polls.html
I am a move on member and I must say, they did a disservice to us members by holding that vote before the debate last night.  I think many people maight have changed their minds after the debate for one candidate to another.  Regardless of who they were supporting.
Dems are going to win..Hillary is our best bet. Obama is too wimpy, too inexperienced.
John McCain is the best thing that can happen to Barack Obama.  Obama can beat McCain, Hillary can't!

How will MoveOn.org endorsement affect the race on Super Tuesday?

.
Move.on & Unions are both organizations run by socialist thugs.
Regardless of who the Democratic candidate is, I will support him or her.  However, as one pundit said, this election will be won only with the support of independents, and too many independents (for whatever irrational reason) HATE Hillary.  McCain will crush Hillary in November; only Obama has a chance.
It's retribution time - OBAMA '08.  It’s time for people of color to take the whip and deal out justice.  You won't be limited to month of February anymore.
==== So, this makes Hillary a moderate ====
Jennifer, Addison, Illinois

Hillary compared to Obama makes her about as much a moderate as Lenin is compared to Stalin.

And nice to see Moveon is back in the picture. Haven't seen their hairy butts since the General Petraeus foul up.

The next election will be about who can protect the country better. Neither Barack or Hillary can compare to any Republican on that front. And the last time a Presidental candidate ran around saying they were going to raise taxes, they won one state.
The real polls worth spending a second on (polls are often wrong) are Zogby Rasmussen and Gallup. And ignore any old (more than 1 week) poll!
Amazing how many people are willing to vote for the corrupt clinton's and their culture of creepy, corrupt cronies.

She is the only candidate that had to cancel two fund raisers in December because the hosts had gotten indicted.

One of her major bundlers has already been sent to jail (3 year term) for fraud.

Another from her Senate campaign has been suing her.

Sigh.
unions endorsed obama in nevada too. we know who won. voting is personal--hillary won more states than obama.  people generally don't like being told what to do, just like here in n.h.  so we'll see..
Hmmm, one of the most divisive organizations in the country endorses the great unifier and that is a blessing?  Karl Rove must be having an orgasm right now.  The Rebublicans will have a field day with this one.
Ann Coulter announced this morning that she will campaign for HILLARY AGAINST MCCAIN,(Not Obama) because she feels Hillary will be the better candidate!!! She has a huge following among conseratives: NOW can you tell me that Hillary
can't win the General Election??? Hillary 2008!
a lot can happen between now and feb. 5. i think it will be a close fight in cali. don't get over blown with the polls. there are factors that aren't being taken in to consideration in those two polls. anyway, you can't rely on polls.
As a former Edwards supporter, I'm gratified that SEIU decided to back Obama. But for those who expect the union's massive ground operation to go to work, I'm afraid there simply isn't time for that kind of mobilization. But SEIU members will largely learn of the endorsement over the weekend and on Monday.
Every time I hear this O'Reilly claptrap about MoveOn being "the extreme far left", I want to punch something.  MoveOn is a netroots organization with 3.2 million members.  When well over one in every hundred Americans belongs to a political organization based on the internet, how can you call it "extreme" anything?  Sheesh, I was a member of MoveOn before I was member of the Democratic Party!
Paul Miller,

Please take note of the number of conservatives on the Republican side that are saying they will sit this one out if McCain is the nominee.  No matter who the Democratic nominee is I think you are overestimating McCain.
Moveon.org.....the left wing liberal group is a natural fit for the elitist Obama, Kerry, Kennedy democrat.

This should be a sign to all democrats and especially moderates that Hillary is our best choice for a general election.  Left wing liberals can not deliver a win in a general election.
Wow this is fantastic. I really thought that MOVEON was a big Clinton supporter. The Democratic party is really beginning to see that Senator Obama is the best candidate for President.  What a beautiful day and time in America.

YES WE CAN W
YES WE WILL
Leave it to Moveon, an organization that wanted to sweep Bill Clinton lying under oath, under the rug. They believed lying under oath had nothing to do with anything. What a bunch of enablers. Hillary enabled right along with them. Hillary and Obama neither one have any real experience running anything before. That's scary! What a choice. They make Mitt Romney look better and better all the time.
Go Mitt!
Congrats Obama.

However, look what the unions did for him in Nevada... NOTHING!

HILALRY 2008!
Great news!!! More power to the people!!
Obama Clinton 08!!
I have been a member of MoveOn  since its early days during the Clinton presidency. I am extremely disappointed that the poll sent to  members gave only two choices, Clinton or Obama.  There was no choice for those of us who wanted "no endorsement." Polls all too often skew results through the choices (or lack of same) they offer. This to me is a prime example of that.
Oh I get it now...when liberals claim change what they really mean is a return to the failed socialist policies of the past...stick with me here...you haven't elected a liberal in 44 years, aint gonna happen in 08 either....kennedy, move on, unions, all of the usual suspects that most of america detest
   THE AMERICAN NURSES ASSOCIATION ENDORSES
   SENATOR HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON (D-NY)

SILVER SPRING, MD -The Clinton Campaign today announced the endorsement of the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANA represents the interests of the nation's 2.9 million registered nurses.
After a sip of kool aid and a joint, Moveon.org will support Obama......
Hillary Clinton is a Bush-winger in center-left clothing. Just check out her endorsement by none other than...Ann Coulter. Yes, Ann Coulter endorsed her over McCain no less, saying she was MORE conservative than him. Plus i would not rush to call Obama super liberal, just look at his issue statements on the economy, many moderate republicans support him Plus, the SEIU in California is not a bunch of lefties. Also Move-On endorsed as a result of internet votes, not a board decision. Clinton promises only what can get her votes for the moment, at heart she is WAY conservative, still the "Goldwater Girl" she once was.

NY state firefighters endorse Clinton

2:27 PM EST, January 31, 2008

ALBANY, N.Y.

New York state's uniformed firefighters are endorsing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

The New York State Professional Fire Fighters Association, which represents 25,000 members statewide, says the Democrat has fought for firefighters during her time in Washington.

Association President Charles Morello says the group considers Clinton their hero.

Among other measures, Clinton co-sponsored a law that provides health monitoring for firefighters and other first responders in the event of terror attacks or natural disasters.
According to politico.com about 10% of MoveOn.org members voted.  That seems very low.
Great move for Obama...

and can we please get past this republican "who can protect us best"...every president will have full resources to protect us...we are not any safer today because of a republican.  remember...9/11 was on a republican watch.
Look what we got with moderate-middle and right.  Bush-Clinton Clinton-Bush Bush-- Scandals and Wars.

Lets try left for a change!

Thanks to all the Move On members and organizers

The Right Urrr Left Choice.
Obama 08
Move on is an extreme liberal group. Not sure this helps Obama.
As a Moveon member would know that the moveon vote was taken by it's members and the support came after the MEMBERS voted on who was the best presidential choice.   This is a reflection of the people and members of moveon and therefore it is not a disservice - sorry if you do not agree but the people spoke.

I love reading all these messages from angry Hillary supporters. HAHAHAAHA. It must be contagious with that campaign...Bill is angry, Hillary is angry...and her supporters are depressed and angry.

Get used to it folks...the President of the United States will be African American...I can hear the hiss of the air of inevitability being let. Finally, we can  put the Clinton's to bed...hopefully with each other this time.

She's crumbling...the next Rasmussen poll is expected to show Obama with the lead...

Al Gore...on deck...Teddy in the trenches....Sweet Caroline on the airwaves...
Hey Paul, if you think "Move On" is going to help Obama with independants and moderate dems, you are nuts.
