MoveOn, CA SEIU to endorse Obama

Posted: Friday, February 01, 2008 11:46 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Chuck Todd and Domenico Montanaro
NBC News has learned the MoveOn.org PAC and the California SEIU will endorse Obama.

The 600,000-member union had been behind Edwards and has now moved to Obama -- the second reported union to do so. NBC News reported yesterday afternoon that the 200,000-member Transportation Workers Union was set to switch from Edwards to Obama today as well, now that the former North Carolina Senator has suspended his campaign.

MoveOn Endorsement Throws Progressive Weight
Behind Barack Obama
3.2 Million Members Nationwide Mobilize to Get Out the Progressive Vote for Senator Obama

Group Has Over 1.7 Million Members In Super Tuesday States

In a resounding vote today, MoveOn.org Political Action's members nationwide voted to endorse Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination for President. The group, with 3.2 million members nationwide and over 1.7 million members in Super Tuesday states, will immediately begin to mobilize on behalf of Senator Obama. The vote favored Senator Obama to Senator Clinton by 70.4% to 29.6%.

Senator Obama accepted the endorsement stating:

"In just a few years, the members of MoveOn have once again demonstrated that real change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up. From their principled opposition to the Iraq war - a war I also opposed from the start - to their strong support for a number of progressive causes, MoveOn shows what Americans can achieve when we come together in a grassroots movement for change. I thank them for their support and look forward to working with their members in the weeks and months ahead."

Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org's Executive Director, issued the following statement on the group's endorsement:

"Our members' endorsement of Senator Obama is a clear call for a new America at this critical moment in history. Seven years of the disastrous policies of the Bush Administration have left the country desperate for change. We need a President who will bring to bear the strong leadership and vision required to end the war in Iraq, provide health care to every American, deal with our climate crisis, and restore America's standing in the world. The enormity of the challenges require someone who knows how to inspire millions to get involved to change the direction of our country, and someone who will be willing to change business as usual in Washington. Senator Barack Obama has proved he can and will be that President.

"With 3.2 million members nationwide and over 1.7 million members in states that vote next Tuesday, we'll be able to immediately jump into action in support of Senator Obama's candidacy. We've learned that the key to achieving change in Washington without compromising core values is having a galvanized electorate to back you up. And Barack Obama has our members 'fired up and ready to go' on that front.

"We congratulate Sens. Clinton, Dodd and Biden, former Senator Edwards, Governor Richardson, Congressman Kucinich and former Senator Gravel on running tremendous campaigns. We thank them for their contributions to the important debate that has gripped our nation and for their ongoing engagement with our members. We're looking forward to working together to bring progressive values to the nation's capitol and to end this disastrous war in Iraq. MoveOn members are committed to putting a Democrat in the White House in 2008 and ushering in a new era of progressive values no matter who wins the nomination."

MoveOn members' comments in the vote reflect the reasons they support Senator Obama:

"Obama's grassroots organizing experience and unifying message combine to show he will work for working people and speak to a broad cross section of the American public. We need this," said Linda Blong of Penngrove, CA.

"There are defining moments in our nation's political history and this is one of them. Barack Obama appeals to the very BEST of the American Spirit," said Estina Baker, Hackensack, NJ

"Barack Obama represents CHANGE in so many levels. He brings HOPE that America can, again, be respected by the rest of the world and that Americans can be proud, again, of our leaders!" Isabelle Mollien, Denver, CO

"Obama has the ability to draw people to him, to energize people who generally don't vote, to create an atmosphere of long-overdue possibility around himself and what he could bring to the office. It is my belief that he can re-establish the lost connection between the American people and their leader, and put our country back on course to be a positive force in the world." Matthew Smith in Columbus, OH

MoveOn's endorsement means a fresh infusion of people-power for Obama in the critical days before Super Tuesday. MoveOn will immediately connect thousands of progressive activists into the Obama GOTV volunteer operation. It will also use the same cutting-edge computer-based phone program that made 7 million GOTV calls for Democrats in 2006 to allow MoveOn members to call other MoveOn members in Feb. 5 states and encourage them to vote for Obama.

Today's endorsement is the first time MoveOn.org has endorsed a candidate for President in the Democratic primary. Over the past year, MoveOn surveyed a rotating sample of 30,000 members each week to determine their membership's preference in the Democratic presidential primary. For months, MoveOn members were divided among many candidates -- as many waited to see who would take bold progressive positions on the issues. As the primary race has gained momentum, the polling showed a consensus forming and, with Senator John Edward's withdrawal from the race, members made their decision in favor of Senator Obama. The vote took place from Thursday, January 31st to Friday, February 1st.

Things seem to be trending the right way, but you get a sense its a race against time, with Clinton trying to run out the clock and Obama hoping he has enough momentum to keep pushing up and over before Tuesday.

Either way, its looking more and more like both come out of Super Duper Tsunami Tuesday with a split field of delegates, and on to follow-on states.

So maybe its a little too early for Clinton to run out the clock - so long as Obama can more or less convincingly be seen as surviving Tuesday's primaries.
In my opinion, MoveOn as an organization should just MoveOn and stop being dissatisfied with everything and everybody.  It is time for national unity, not more bickering, name calling, etc.  And, I wonder if the "polling" that was done was "outdome pre-determined" rather than being impartial.  Why do I question this?  Beause, it came before the last debate, not after it.
SEIU California and MoveOn also endorse Obama!
A grassroots movement is building for Obama. For the first time young people like me are getting really involved in politics and we're going to make the future a better place. No time for senile grandpas like McCain. Watch out old people a Youthquake is coming! Barack the VOTE!
Obama is truly amazing, and this endorsement is one example why.

Not only is he endorsed by liberal democrats like Ted Kennedy and MoveOn.org, he is also endorsed by more red-state governors and senators than Clinton.

More cross-over Republicans and more indepedents have also voted for Obama over Clinton, by a very large margin.

We need a President who can bring us together, liberal, conservative, black, white, men, women, rich, poor… Obama can deliver on a better future for America. We must let go of the past and its failed policies. It's time to move on for a better America

Please be sure to also report important Clinton endorsements if any. Right now, I have Googled and did not find any today. Fair, unbiased reporting is essential to good journalism and building trust from the voters.
I just honestly wish you guys have emphasized the Americans Nurses' Association endorsement of Hillary, even though it is already reported by someone in a comment.
Just because he's endorsed does not mean the union members will vote that way. Look at Nevada.

No surprise there---Move-On wants to move on from the dipstick and the dynasties---Bush the dipstick and the Bush-Clinton dynasties.  Did anyone really think they'd endorse any other way?
Wow! Hooray, for Barack, and the USA.  Now, let's hope the real elections are honest and NOT rigged when Obama succeeds at winning the primary and the general elections, also by a landslide.
 Thanks to MoveOn.
Indeed, both the left and the right are uniting against the prospect of a Hillary Clinton nomination -- but it is the right and left of the Democratic party.

From the right, Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, perhaps the most conservative Democratic senator in Congress.  From the left, Ted Kennedy.

From the right, Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, whose stances regularly tick off progressives.  From the left, increasing numbers of SEIU chapters.

From the right, South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson.  From the left, MoveOn, perhaps the most liberal activist group in America.

The left wants someone honest who won't triangulate in the clutch.  The right wants someone honest and broad-minded who won't decimate red- and purple-state Democrats' down-ballot chances and flip state legislatures and Congress back to the GOP.

Gary Hart, Ned Lamont, Janet Napolitano, George Miller...  This isn't a bunch of wild-eyed party-wrecking extremists; this is serious people who want to strengthen the party and win elections.
Not that I mind, this is not helpful to Obama.  He needs to move more to the right to be appealing the majority of dems and independants.  Too far left is not comfortable for older citizens and Latinos.  And, women are getting fed up with this ganging up to try to destroy Hillary.  We will ban together even more as these endorsements loom.  None of them are helping Obama.
eeeh!"Move On".. as a democrat I can't even stand this group.
Tom Pollard, if your idea of protecting this country is having a long war with no end in sight, enraging people from different places around the world to inflict harm on us both at home and abroad, then you must be mistaken. You just complained about raising taxes, what do you think the current war has been fought on? Taxes won't need to be raised higher than it is right now. only the top 1% will have to experience all that, and why should they, because they can afford it. You heard Hillary saying yesterday that taxes will go back down to what it was before Bush took over. Digest that.
With McCain looking like the Republican nominee, Dems are going to have to elect someone who has the ability to draw independents.

Everyone knew from day one that Hillary had a high floor and low cieling, and her campaign's strategy was based on the 51-49 strategy.  Now with McCain as the Republican front runner, their election strategy simply isn't going to work due to McCains ability to draw independents.  McCain is also going to tear Clinton apart in the debates on the issue of Iraq.

I think what we see from the polls, high profile endorsers, and grassroots movements is a coalescing around Obama because liberal folks realize he is the Democratic candidate who can beat McCain in November.
Hillary lovers that actually take a look at Obama and his plans and his honesty soon join our movement! Take a real look at him and don't believe all the crap. Hillary is still going to court in Los Angeles some time this year over the Peter Paul scandal from her contributions from her New York Senate race and here's Bill front page again with another scandal and more to follow. Only those who don't want to know what they're about will blindly follow! Bush simply continued and expanded a lot of the Clinton policies such as NAFTA and they try to tell us they are for the middle class. The Clinton supporters are mostly ones who gave their money and now owe her a vote. The number of Americans who don't owe them far outnumber that top few percent   and Tuesday will be even more devastating to them than SC was! Go Obama!
Speaking as an interested observer (I'm a bit of a political junkie), I'm fascinated to see how the members here spend so much time bashing the opponents (Hillary supporters bashing Obama, and vice versa).  And people wonder why they get so much negative advertising in the mail and on TV...even those on a bulletin board comparing DEMOCRATS AND DEMOCRATS can't resist beating the crap out of each other
Why the hate for MoveOn. Because they're right most of the time. Please.
All Obama needs now, are Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore to round out the moveon.org endorsement. Wacko far left endorsements..... that ought to really attract necessary swing voters for Obama in the general. as Chris Matthews would say......Ha!
Attention citizens!  Your vote counts and the GOP will lead us beyond Move-on, Barak and silly Hilly.  The dem. party, lead by hillery or Obama, would self destruct; taking all of us down the road to no where.

Platoon sergeant, USArmy
I was a member of MoveOn.org and feel like that slapped me and half of their membership who funded and supported them.  They need to change their membership from 3.2 million to half that amount if they are going to support a Democratic candidate before they get enough delegates to be nominated.  They won't get another dime of support from me.  To support Obama over the war issue, despite his great lack of experience, is like the Republicans choosing a candidate solely over the abortion issue - we will get one more President on training wheels full of promises and lacking the knowledge of how to govern and get the job done.
