Whom will Bill Richardson endorse?

Posted: Friday, February 01, 2008 11:56 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Andrea Mitchell and Lauren Appelbaum
With Obama in New Mexico today, there's been speculation that Richardson might endorse Obama. Yet as it turns out, Richardson happnes to be in DC today doing state business, lobbying for an Air Force cyberspace command contract at the Pentagon.

He is NOT expected to endorse today, and his folks are denying the "rumors" that he would be endorsing Obama.

He returns to New Mexico on a 3:30pm flight this afternoon.

And note that Bill Clinton is working him over hard.

At a press conference in New Mexico today, Obama was asked about a possible Richardson endorsement, and Obama said there were no plans of him receiving one from the New Mexico governor. Yet Obama added that he'd love to be pleasantly surprised. *** CORRECTION *** Obama's presser was in LA; he head to New Mexico later today....

Juan, That might be true in LA but, here in Minnesota there are alot of young Latino' that are voting for Clinton. In Carl Bernstein's book he says that, Hillary and Blii did not agree with NAFTA so maybe you should think twice.
Perhaps you didn't catch this one several weeks ago.  Latino high profile leaders in California who formerly backed Richardson now endorse Obama.  Hillary will have a hard time with latino and hispanics in California.  Not to mention the wedge she put between the latinos and the AA's in the debate.  Here is the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3vDxvnxuqU
Clinton had better not push Richardson too hard---that was how he lost Kennedy.  Ah for the days when Bill was the Peace and Prosperity president, instead of the endorsements bully!
"Of course, according to First Read, if Obama gets Richardson's nod, then it's because he's the best. But if Hillary gets it, then it's because Bill Clinton twisted his arm. For Christ's sake, you don't even TRY to hide you Obama bias anymore.
"

I could not agree with you more.

The bias has been apart to any discerning reader for a long time.  But evidentally, the general public is starting to rtealize this too.  In conversations with colleagues at work and my friends, who are not very political, they all mentioned lately that the media is acting like they want Obma and attack and discount everything the Clinton's say.

Too bad "fair and balanced" media is now everywhere!
I'm a whispering Republican Obamaniac from northern New Jersey.  PLEASE PLEASE help Obama become your party's nominee - you'd make it endgame on Tuesday.
Governor Richardson has to choose between loyalty and the feeling of "owing" the Clintons and knowing who is better through their behavior during the debates. Of course he will favor Obama if his concern is for unity and integrity. Hillary's Nevada ads showed her target audience is "white females". If Richardson does not see the covert bigotry in Clinton's attitudes, I feel sorry for him. "We are all one people" and "we are more alike than different" versus "black/brown" in speeches? The comment above shows it rather clearly "his people".
Richardson is not a leader, he's a follower.  He will see which way the wind blows among hius contituents and endorse then.
You guys are crazy. Why is the endorsement so important given Richardson's poor political performance? Well, let him endorse whoever he wants to, whether it be Obama or Clinton OR McCain.
Bill Clinton and Bill Richardson are personal friends and have worked together for years.  Bill R. is at the height of his value right now.  He's waiting for a VP or Cabinet position offer.  Somehow, I can't see him in Obama's administration. He's one of the people from the past.
Don't you wonder about the political suicide of bowing to pressure from Bill?
Did you guys cover a (potentially) more important endorsement today?  MoveOn endorsed Obama today by having its members choose.  The vote was 70.5% Obama, 29.5% Clinton.  Over 1.6 million Democratic voters had a say in this decision, so I'd say it's a pretty big deal.
As a vocal Hispanic leader, Bill Richardson should endorse Barack Obama in order to send a precedent that a perceived wedge politics between Black and Latino will not be tolerated. This endorsement will only solidify Barack's message of unifying our already divisive country.
Are all of Hillary supporters accusing the media of bias when they don't read favorable press?

I guess the voters have an anti-Hillary bias too.
It's unfortunate that Latino's are pigeon-holed into chosing someone simply because of name recognition and party affiliation. I believe ALL americans are fed up with business as usual in Washington. Especially politicians who only focus on certain minorities only when it's election time. I wonder why we as Latino's are told that we wouldn't vote for Obama because he is black and YET have no problem voting for Hillary who's husband is often touted as the 'first black President'. IT DOESN'T make sense!

Hillary for all claims to 'experience' forgets, it was Bill Clinton who was elected NOT her she has NO right to include that in her resume. Those years in the white house were HIS administration and while there were good things that took place, there were other things such WhiteWater and Bubba's brother and yes even "MONICA" to name a few which served to divide and EMBARASS our country. For all her experience and intuition why did she not know fully what was going on? She was the 1st Lady and in most marriages wive's are generally VERY intuitive about things said and not said. It's time to avoid another defacto Dynasty (Bush's is a miserable FAILURE) get someone that whether he or she stands or falls can be a CLEAR change for the 21st Century and doesn't have the obvious baggage that would envitably follow the Clintons.

This is the century where WE WILL have a woman president or vice-president, just NOT this woman. As Latino's let's make choices which WE as individuals feel are in the best interest of the COUNTRY.

Barak has more in common with Latino's, African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans and other modern-day immigrants than ANY of the previous presidents which have occupied the office in last 232 years! His presence alone will change the foreign policy dynamic 180 degrees. Shocking as this may be I believe our country needs a person who can clearly convey abroad that our country is a country built upon shoulders of immigrants and rich in diversity. Many Clinton supporters try to bully folks reasoning that having 1st female president is paramount and conveniently forgetting the serious flaws in the Clinton history. The world is the way it is in spite of male and female leadership - If her supporters are serious about about turning things around, would she and them support Barak Obama? Would she take a position within his administration and contribue to a historic moment in history? or is the need for a footnote in American history as the Clinton Dynasty and 1st Woman president more important than turning the page?

My last point is this, watching the debates hasn't anyone notice SHE NEVER answers critical questions CLEARLY, CONCISELY or DIRECTLY? We hate the contempt George W. communicates, she is has some striking similarities - will a Clinton III Administration be? 'We don't need to answer that because WE know best what's good for you' because I am a woman and my husband was President for 2 terms and you are only a voter every 4 years.
Bionic Woman,Az..Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy have been long time friends..and Ted Kennedy supported Bill during his impeachment....Friendship has absolutely nothing to do with who they will endorse and mean nothing in politics.

Chris,
I live in Canada.
My brother and sisters(Soldiers)are fighting in the most the dangerous zone in Afganistan too and are dying more and more. This is not going over ever well in our country right now. There is serious talk,we may pull even pull out. Now we look at another political situation that in your land that is confusing. The world get's George Bush, disater, and now the posibility of a on the job training,President of the United Sates at this time of strife in the world. Are you serious.Extensive experience and knowledge required.Wake Up! Mrs Clinton can leadthe United States out of this mess.
Look at your Economy. Look at your health sysyem.
These are serious warning signs of trouble.
Peopleshould realize, this is not a popularity contest. It is real life.Think very serious and let's  hope that we don't make another blunderand mistake like what happen in the last two elections.
Juan and Mitchell, the opinion of Latinos differ from where they originate. Not all of us are illegal border crossers. Even though I sympathize with the conditions that have illegals migrating to the US from Central and South America, many of us believe it should be done the right way. I personally don't like the illegals giving my people a bad rap. If we are to be a proud race, then we should do what is right for ourselves and our community. Because Hillary was being tough on the Immigration issue, it's not like she is like the Republicans who wish to round up all the illegal immigrants and deport them. Our leaders have to do what is right for our nation first.
Richardson won't endorse.  He's campaigning for Secretary of State (and deserves it), and will keep good relations with both candidates by remaining neutral.
Why is Bill Clinton working over Richardson.  Isn't Hillary who is running and being able to make promisses.  OR is it Bill who is running for President.  Another article and truth that Hillary can not and will not be able to control Hillary and that it is Bill's experience that she is running on.
I cannot believe MSNBC bias in this election. I will tell you ,you are not doing yourselves any good. The cable is starting to look like pimps. I always liked MSNBC over Fox because of your neutral stand on polotics.     You people have crossed the line for me.I am afraid you have lost me.
I always enjoy how Hillary supporters seem to be so upset with everyone that she's not already been handed the keys to the Whitehouse.  Sorry gang, she has to compete against an ethical, inspiring, more experienced candidate. I know it hurts you, but try to play nice.
This is in response to the Minnesota writer, the only hispanics are illegials working in the meatpacking plants. Very few legals living here.Get your stats right Mel
It is really getting pathetic that Obama can tell the black preachers in Georgia that he is one of them when he was on a conference call, but if Hillary speaks the truth about immigration it becomes a wedge.

As an African-American female I am insulted that the white candidate cannot say anything that is not construes as racist, but the African-American can say anything. This seems like affirmative action to me. If Obama gets the nomination he is going to be creamed by the Republicans because they don't believe in affirmative action.

Obama said today that if he wins he'll get Hillary's voters but if she wins she may not get his. Talk about  wedges and divisiveness. Are Obama's supporters so childish that if their candidate loses they'll just take their marbles and go home? Sounds petty to me.

The press (MSNBC MORE THAN ANYONE!) continues to push Obama. They will be disappointed when Governor Richardson endorses Senator Clinton on SATURDAY in New Mexico as Hillary is now heading that way for some reason (confirmed) and has yet to put the event on her website. Also all those polls showing Obama momentum before New Hampshire were dead wrong. Expect a lot of long faces Tuesday night. Will Andrea Mitchell Greenspan burst into tears? Will Morning Joe walk off the set? Will Chris and Keith explode when Hillary cleans house winning 18 states Tuesday night?
BionicWoman, Tucson, AZ ""Bill Clinton and Bill Richardson are personal friends and have worked together for years.""

"Friends" is a little loose of term.

The Kennedy's are friends with the Clintons. Look where that got them.

John Kerry is friends with the Clinton's. Look where that got them.

Even Al Gore is leaning towards Obama.

And it's not too good of an idea to get too friendly with the Clintons. You could end up in jail, or worse.

Independents and moderate Republicans flocking to Obama? What??? It is true. I even have Republican friends (one is conservative) who are supporting Obama and stronly oppose Hillary.
It is clear to me that you guys don't want First Read to be reporting in accordance with what is happening. And the media has long known Hillary to be a divisive person.
Florida's voting DOES NOT matter not to First Read but the state Democratic Party which screwed the election. With the DNC not paying much attention to Florida, so does First Read. And I don't think this is a tilting toward Obama.
It would be good for either candidate that has a chance (Clinton or Obama).  It is unlikely that Gravel would get anywhere even with an endorsement from anyone.

I don't think that Richardson is really thinking about which candidate to endorse.  I don't know that his endorsement would really bring a whole lot in for either one.  It might be better for Obama than Clinton given the claim that Blacks and Latinos don't get along; I just think that is false.
Mel--

NAFTA was one of Bill Clinton's "signature" achievements-- and he touted it thorughout his administration --
as a matter of fact if you remember - or are old enough - the reason Ross Perot got into the presidential race was because he thought NAFTA was a huge mistake for the country

Turns out Ross Perot was right --

Hillary was a major proponet of NAFTA -- the Clintons are only distancing themselves from this now that it has been bad for the country and cost so many jobs

Feel free to research this--

You can still support Hillary - but "there is only one set of facts" (DP Monyihan)
I believe that Richardson will vote for the candidate that will bring change to our country. I am an Obama supporter, I like Hilary Clinton and I dont have any ill words to say about her. But I believe Obama has a heart of gold and will make the difference that America so desperatly needs. We need very much to be one nation of all races, sex and creed to be united. To go back to one nation under God. I believe Obama can do this.
Governor Richardson,
I am very dissappointed in you for NOT supporting Hillary - sure Obama means change HOWEVER he also means inexperience and with the way the economy is now
GOD help us if anyone wins EXCEPT HILLARY !!  You have the chance to help Hillary with the LATINO VOTE
& YOU HAVEN'T, SHAME ON YOU.  If Obama is the nominee
I am seriously considering voting Repulbican & that makes me sick to think about it.  I USE TO BE Richardson supporter - You have lost my vote
