Will the Right boost Romney?

Posted: Friday, February 01, 2008 1:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Erin McPike
Whether it will make any difference remains to be seen, but as FOX News starts questioning McCain's conservative creds with more heat, Romney is starting to pick up some steam from the Right.

Today he picks up the backing of Rep. Lynn Westmoreland from Georgia, which could be a boon to him in that state on Feb. 5. He also scored former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum's backing today. Although Santorum lost by a whopping 18 points to Democrat Bob Casey in his 2006 race, he was not too long ago considered a standard bearer of the conservative wing of the party. His name was also tossed around as a presidential prospect.

Conservative talking heads Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham have also broadcast that they, too, will be voting for Mitt Romney. And as two of the most well-known conservative commentators, that may provide something of a boost.

You poor conservative souls.  John McCain is the right man for the time and you might as well get used to it.  He can beat Obama or Hillary in the general election and Romney cannot.  To say that you will not vote for him is your emotions talking and not letting you think logically.  I don't vote... Obama or Hillary is president.  Because he does not toe the conservative dogma is what is appealing about his run for president.   Its about time a politician says I am going to do what is right for all Americans and not for the few.
"That really depends on which state you're talking about.  The fact is that Huckabee is in a better position than Romney to actually defeat McCain in states like Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Arkansas, and others."

Oh yes, PLEASE Republicans, elect Huckabee as your nominee. Mr. Fair Tax (yes, I'm sure lots of people want to pay 23 percent sales tax on necessities like food and clothing). Mr. "Wives should graciously submit to their husbands". The Religious Right can all come out and vote... and then watch the Democrats take back the White House.
Per Fox News: "Republican Mike Huckabee's record on women's rights is coming under increased scrutiny, including his endorsement of the Southern Baptist Convention's stance that women should 'submit graciously' to their husbands"
From NPR.org (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17209388)
"FactCheck.org analyzed the plan and concluded that the poor probably would do better thanks to the subsidy. But it also found that many middle-class taxpayers would end up paying more than they do now — and that the very rich would pay much less than they do now."
This battle is not between the conservatives and McCain.  Social conservatives do not have a series problem with McCain.  Fiscal conservatives (deficit hawks) actually like McCain.    The rank and file republicans don't really have a problem with McCain. It is a battle between the Neo-cons and McCain.

Mathematically, Romney does not have a shot at winning the nomination.  The Neo cons need to decide.  Is their anomosity toward McCain that strong, that they are willing to risk a conservative supreme court?  There will probably be 1 if not 2 justices that will leave the supreme court in the next four years.  McCain will move the court right will Obama and or Clinton will appoint liberal justices.

If the Neo cons want to stick it to McCain and ruin our opportunity for a conservative court, then we truely need to determine if they represent our interests.  If they are willing to sacrifice for the greater good, then they need to tone down the rhetoric against McCain.
How can anyone think the Huck can beat McCain. He is too busy kissing the rear end of the senator. It really got me when this "minister" decided to stand next to his partner and crime and support him in his lies about the Romney "timeline" BS ..isnt there something you were taught Minister Huckabee, something that goes "thou shalt not bear false witness???
Romney a conservative? Go to youtube and look at his speeches before and after he decided to run for president. He will show you in his own words what a flip flop poll driven farce he is. If it wasn't for the tens of millions of his own money spent on attack ads he wouldn't even be in the race.
McCain is better but not great by any measure.
If Huckabee does not do well on super Tuesday, then the Republics are done until 2012.
Kathryn:
I like your points. And I understand your desire to uphold God's will.
Let me throw this back at you:
If there are any moral voters who judge candidates on the basis of their religious beliefs, I consider that religious discrimination. If you do not want a Muslim as our president out of fear, that is understandable. But a Christian is a Christian and any sect member of Christianity is Christian. Voting against a candidate on the basis of which sect he belongs to or what religious practices within Christianity he espouses, constitutes craziness on the part of moral voters.
God does call for us to be compassionate of all human beings. Jesus preached compassion and love -- and that compassion and love includes ALL human beings no matter what their perspectives.
To uphold God is to uphold compassion and love for all human beings. Otherwise, God is discriminating, uncaring, and unloving, which is not wht  we Christians want to hear.
Opposing Republicans and Democrats solely on the basis of their moral perspectives demosntrates poisonous conservatism (Bush called it compassionate conservatism). Democrats and Republicans should see each other as one people cocnerned for the well-being of all Americans from all walks of life.
How utterly hypocritical.  Those rabid pro lifers, especially Santorium, endorsing a man who openly flip flopped on the issue, and very recently, was openly pro choice.  The republicans are such losers.
Do you people who claim that Mike Huckabee is not a true conservative even know his stance on the issues that concern us as americans. I don't mean that he was at one time a pastor, or that he is against gay marriage/abortion. I mean, do you know his position on President Bush's decisions on the war and what he plans to do to get us free from both the struggles we are facing in Iraq and from the stronghold we are fighting from the countries that control the oil/gas we use? Do you know his plan for controlling our borders and being responsible for tracking the people who come in to this country even legally and do us harm once they are here and overstay their legal time? Do you know how the Fair Tax would boost the economy on many levels, creating a stronger America and thus a more progressive people?

Educate yourself and know that the TRUE conservative who realizes the need for change and the need for a new direction lead by a government that recognizes FREEDOM rather than SOCIALISM is MIKE HUCKABEE!

We are a government by the people, for the people. We are the government. It is time that we realize that our vote counts, that we cannot sit back and play the blame game - as the only way to change and to forge a new path is to get up and take the heavy, difficult steps ourselves in the new direction.

We cannot elect someone to the White House because we like what they want to do for us. We have to realize that we all have a role. Our sick and needy would not have to rely on the government, making it easier to survive on government assistance than on hard work like our parents did, if we would all realize that we are all responsible for each other. 'What you do unto the least of these, you do unto me' - JESUS. That is what our 'by the people, for the people' is meant to accomplish. By making a government mandate for everything we take away our freedom, and we take away our individual responsibility - we make the efforts of those of us who work hard to make ends meet in vain by creating a system where it is easier to hold our hands out to the government than it is to work 40 hours a week to feed our families.

That is what the republican party is based upon; that is what Mike Huckabee stands for.
I ALREADY VOTED FOR MITT ROMNEY!
THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB.
Ahead of Super Tuesday, many of us have "early-voted" in favor of Romney!

Go Mitt! Go!
Make sure and pay your taxes....  There are 21 million illegals who depend on it.

That should be McCain's slogan!
Asher, I agree with your assesment.  I was putting all conservative in one basket and that was not my intent.  It seems to me that McCain is lining up support in all the right places - New York, Florida, California and now Texas.  This is going to be big come the general election.
So many people stand up and praise Martin Luther King every year in January, and quote his famous "I have a dream" speech. It's astonishing to see the level of religious bigotry that has shown up on this site when it comes to examining Mitt Romney. Since when does "He's a Mormon, so therefore I won't vote for him..." not a bigotted statement. MLK said he desired a day when we judge a man by "the content of his character" instead of the color of his skin, and he could have just as easily input "the type of his religion" in its place. Mitt Romney's relgion espouses the high moral and ethical beliefs and principles that are taught in the Bible, and this man LIVES them. Mitt wasn't the one who keeps letting slip durogatory comments about Huckabee's religious beliefs to reporters in an effort to smear him, but Huckabee has done that to Mitt. If there is anyone left in the Republican list of candidates that can be considered the strongest conservative, Mitt is that person.
If crazy Rick supports Mitt, that is reason enough to dump him.
I JUST HOPE THAT MITT WONT QUIT , IF THE HUCKSTER WILL DROP OUT, THOSE OF US WHO LIKE MITT COULD REALLY TAKE IT AWAY FROM MCCAIN.  IN MY HEART I KNOW THAT MCCAIN IS A LIBERAL IN SHEEPS CLOTHING AND THAT ROMNEY IS OUR ONLY CHANCE. I LOVE IT WHEN HE SAYS THAT YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD BE MARRIED BEFORE THEY HAVE CHILDREN..WE NEED THIS KIND OF LEADER AND HIS GREAT FAMILY TO BE IN INSPIRATION AND HELP SAVE OUR CULTURE.IM GLAD THAT SO MANY OTHERS AGREE. GO MITT.
Kathryn in Bham & "vote for Romney is a vote for Mormons"-
I stopped caring to know more about Huck when he showed himself to be a complete ignorant hypocrite.
See Kathy, I am one of these "Mormon" that Huck followers are so afraid of. I grew up being taught that Mormons were the bad bad bad non-Christians.

That is just a huge lie.

How can one claim to be a Christian and then go about bearing false witness and  loving your neighbor, unless they are Mormon.
Huck throws out slanderous bits about Romney's faith, then claims he really does not know anything about his religion.
The fact is Huck knows quite a bit. Enough to come to SLC and be the key note speaker at a Anti-Mormon convention just a few years ago.
As a teen, my "Christian" youth group went to hand out anti-Mormon literature at a Mormon Temple. I still remember the conflicting feelings in my heart and the pit of my stomach.
For 22 years I have now been one of these feared Mormon. I don't wear a cross to show that I am Christian, but I study His teachings and strive daily to be all he would have me be. I strive daily to teach my 5 children to walk in His light. My only hope is that one day He will see fit to call me His. He is my savior and I don't know one Mormon who does not feel the same way.
Where there is hate and intolerance, there will never be peace.
In my opinion it is a very sad day if you are voting for Huck merely to be a vote against another man's faith.
If Romney or any other candidate has their own money to spend, who cares?  I'd rather they be spending their own money than accepting campaign contributions with strings attached. I care more about their position on issues and judgment.  Seems the other candidates are envious--if they can win on their own substance what difference does it make how much Romney spends?

It was clear in the last debate that McCain is trying so hard to bash Romney that he has to twist things totally out of context...not very presidential to me.  He gets so impatient & tense when anybody challenges him, I'm surprised he didn't break his jaw, it was so clenched. McCain's & Huckabee's attempts to tag team against Romney in previous debates was obvious & they can only bring up the same invalid comments over & over. Not an impressive tactic for presidential candidates to me, and it seemed somewhat schoolboyish when they smiled with glee when they thought they had a "gotcha". McCain can't control his impatience & intolerance, as shown by his smirks & snide little condescending laughs after he's verbally thrown out another slam toward Romney, not the best Presidential demeanor.

McCain gives excuses to justify his contradictory voting record to his "so called" positions, to me that's deception which I don't trust.  I don't trust that McCain will follow through on immigration, develop economic changes to encourage corporations to keep their business in the US, promote alternatives to foreign oil dependance, health care options, etc.  I not only want a president that will protect our nation militarily, but can also see the big picture and knows how to get it done. Romney's the one I see can do that. I'd rather a candidate who is honest enough to admit they have changed their position on something like Romney has.

If the Republican candidate winds up being McCain, I'll strongly consider voting for the democratic nominee...I don't see much difference. Hang in there Romney, you've got a lot of support!!
