Kennedy praises Obama on immigration

Posted: Friday, February 01, 2008 3:56 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
MONTEREY PARK, CA -- Sen. Ted Kennedy spoke Spanish. It wasn't pretty, but it got the message across.

"Un voto por Obama es un voto para la gente!" the senior Massachusetts senator told a crowd on the campus of East Los Angeles College.

Kennedy spoke of Obama as a transformational leader, and made a direct appeal to Hispanic voters by highlighting his work on labor and immigration issues in the Senate. He also attempted to bridge the Hispanic and African American divide by linking the debate over immigration reform with the fight for civil rights.

"There are those [voices] in the floor of the United States Senate that were similar to the voices that I heard in the 1960s -- the voices of discrimination and bigotry and prejudice," Kennedy said. Obama, he added, has stood with him throughout the effort. "If you watched him last night, you saw a man of empathy, you saw a man of heart, you saw a man of soul, and I can give you this assurance, that Barack and I are going to stand on the floor of the United States Senate until we get a comprehensive bill."

Kennedy never mentioned Hillary Clinton, saying only at one point that the candidates "are not greatly different" on the issues. "But there is a very vital and important difference," he said. "And that is the kind of spirit and the kind of enthusiasm that Barack Obama has been able to bring to this campaign."

He noted the divisions in the Senate over not just immigration but a host of issues. "We need a leader that is going to be able to lead and break down the barriers and get things done for the American people!"

How has he stood with Kennedy on anything, he has been in the Senate for two years and been out campaigning most of that time.
Chuck(les) and Co.;

What if the candidate who is guaranteed to lose the two most delegate-rich states on 2/5 WASN'T named Barry?

You'd probably have to write something about that.

I will have mourning armbands for sale for one dollar on Monday (for early adapters) and for 5 dollars on Tuesday, so get 'em early, so you can wear them on Tuesday night's funerals, er, election results.

I am especially waiting for Chuck(les) himself to express his shock and surprise at the outcome. When that happens and I have been much more prescient than you, can I have your JOB?

HA HA!
I can't believe anyone in that audience was stupid enough to believe anything that jerk said!  The guy was kicked out of Harvard for cheating!  He left his mistress to die in a frozen river - he got a way with it!  He is only a senator because he is a Kennedy. If he thinks he has any influence he is in for a rude awakening.  He is a legend only in his own mind.
Kennedy said, "...and I can give you this assurance, that Barack and I are going to stand on the floor of the United States Senate until we get a comprehensive bill."

Is this his concession that he and Barack will both be Senators fighting on the floor of the Senate for Hillary's comprehensive immigration reform legislation when she is President in 2009???

Bravo, Teddy!  Kennedy and Obama for US Senate!!!!
I think We (Hispanics) are going to make big decision on America's next President. Go Obama. You can count with us.
Anybody who has any working relationship with real life-and with working for a living-has seen how cheap immigrant labor has wiped out black blue-collar progress.  I guess that doesn't include billionaires like Kennedy.
"Vote for the people" Which people? I should think that liberal fantasy that ethnic groups aren't simply out for themselves has worn thin by now.
Finally-can anyone mention another issue (other than massive immigration) where saying "Well, it worked 150 years ago,  so it will work now"is taken seriously?  "Well, calvary charges worked in warfare 150 years ago, so they will work now".
Obama is OK but Hillary knows exactly what she is going to do.
Ted spoke Spanish?  Hmm...

JFK spoke German once...it wasn't very pretty, either.

"Ich bin ein Berliner!" - "I am a jelly doughnut!"
as we say in NYC

Como se llama Obama, no se puede
Look out Hillary!  This man has championed Hispanics and Latinos throughout his political career, and they know it.

Bill and Hillary are chomping at the bit to start the smear and bashing again.. they won't be able to control themselves for long.

The only advantage Hillary may possibly have in California...and it is slim... is the thousands that voted early before Obama's important endorsements.

She is losing her lead in California.. and it will continue to decline in the few days left before the Feb 5th caucus.

Goodbye Bill & Hillary

Obama '08!
Anyone want to talk about Obama's stance on licenses for illegal immigrants and how more than 70% of the population is opposed to it?  He will lose the general on this issue alone.
Obama surrounding himself with the old guard Democrats, Kennedy, Leahy, Daschle, Kerry, sure makes it appear to me that Obama isn't about moving into the future, no matter what he says.  Looks more to me like Kennedy, et al. are the puppet master and Obama is dancing to their tune.  If you don't think Obama will owe all these old white men something when this is all over with, you are sadly mistaken.

And equating himself with John Kennedy is so ridiculous as to be laughable.  Most of the people supporting Obama weren't even alive when John Kennedy was in office.  So Ted and Caroline romantacize John Kennedy's memory and Obama uses that in his tv ads.  That's as bad as Rudy's 9/11 video footage.
Once again, Kennedy presents the suggestion that the American People who do not want to support the terrible cost of amnesty are racist and bigots.  He is, in fact, as divisive a Senator as there is. If he cannot be specific in his charges, he needs to  apologize and his behavior modified by action in the Senate. Soon.  Lets get the ugly name calling off our plates before we go into the election.  Kennedy needs to present facts or get off the air.
the obama haters are out in force today. most of you are proof of the need for this country to be united and healed, no matter who brings that unity and healing. good luck to your candidates and mat god deliver from the poisonus hate that dwells inside of you. god bless america.
Illegal Aliens and Immigration is NOT the same thing. Immigrant is a legal status granted by a sovereign country.  We have to many folks who do not know and are ignorant or outright deceivers, confusing illegal alien workers calling them illegal immigrants with immigrants. Criminals did NOT build America; Citizens and LEGAL immigrants built it. 80% of the American people want an end to anarchy! This is NOT a Democrat, Republican, Independent issue. It's an American Issue.

Illegal aliens are criminals, those who hire them are criminals and those who aid-and-abet them are criminals.

Illegal aliens in America have NO rights.  We are required by law to arrest and prosecute, deport them. (Title 8 U.S. Code) To report illegal aliens call the DHS National Hotline 1 866 DHS 2ICE. (1-866-347-2523)

No, matter your political party affiliation, and setting aside your thoughts on issues.  We all need to remember what it is to be an American Citizen.  We need to make sure our elected representatives obey their Oath of Office and keep their Oath of Allegiance. See http://tinyurl.com/2znnvl Know whom you are voting for.
Kennedy thinks he talks for the whole country. He is no jack kennedy now that was a man.Kennedy is a woman hater,he is a killer that got away scott free in letting that young lady way younger than he drown when he went off that bridge while he was driving drunk. He is not a man.Kennedy is for Obama because he does not like Hillary.Hillary has had more education in her little finger than Obama has in his head.Obama worked 5 months as a lawyer for a slum lord. That is how he got the million dollar home he lives in.We have two wars going on and i am voting for Hillary.I saw Obamas home and it has a big fence around it with a vacant lot aside the house. It is believed the lot belongs to the Slum Lord.If he works for a slum lord and Gets a million dollar house and becomes President, he will work for any one who will give him things. He will work for who ever will line his pockets like the President we have now.
Please tell me how we managed to get in a position where we have a muslim running for President of our country.  He will put us into an even bigger mess with Iraq.  It really upsets me that he won't even put his hand over his heart for the pledge of allegiance. I suppose the first thing he would do is take GOD out of everything..GOD HELP US ALL!!!
Mary- stop drinking your Right Wing red Kool-aid. Repeat after me...Fox is Faux News. Lies and Swiftboating is how Republicans steal elections.

I know...Oxycontin Rush is a god. So is Billo. Keep on drinking, with you its pointless,.
Illegal immigration has lost the Democrats the election.   As far as I am concerned it is now which Republican will I vote for.  It won't be McCain.  Guess I will stay home.

You guys are hellbent on giving away our jobs and our country.  GO for it.  Canada looks better all of the time.

MARY - Obama is NOT a Muslim. This is a hate e mail scam you are falling for. He is a Christian and was sworn in with his hand on his family bible.

This was covered specifically on CNN and several other networks and was disproved at least a couple of weeks ago.

Lots of online sources also address this hate campaign.
